Sure a cute story about embracing our differences because deep down, we are all the same. This book would be perfect to read to a group of children or a class. Students will be able to see that it is okay to be different than your friends, we all have something special about us. And the illustrations are beautifully done. They are very colorful. I would love to have this book for my classroom.
Thank you NetGalley for the arc ebook
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. An excellent picture book about how penguins are alike and different and it's okay.
This book is adorable. The illustrations are beautiful and vibrant. My daughter and I loved learning a little bit about all the different penguins. This is such a good story to teach kids it's okay to be different, and that not everyone is the same and that is perfectly okay. Everyone can like what they like and you should just be yourself.
Definitely recommend.
I loved the message in this book but I feel if this book is meant for children, it wasnt particularly well done. I read it to my daughter to see how it went over with her (she is 9) and it went over her head some and she wasnt excited about it. But the main idea was great... The execution just wasnt.
The last page hit me hard and made me become a humble human being again.
You will know when you read the book with the kids. I love how the author expresses exactly how it feels to be different and how it is not uncommon at all!
I love the writing. I love the art. I love the presentation.
Just get this book.
Yes, March 2024 it is! Believe me, this one is a winner!
Thank you, NorthSouth Books Inc., for the advance reading copy.
I love penguins so much! The premise of this book was very cute and had a great message. Unfortunately, I felt sometimes I lost the connection with the penguin friends because there was no smooth transition. I also felt the font was a little off putting from the cute art.
While members of a penguin colony may look identical from a distance, the truth is, each one is different. Yet ultimately, they are all penguins. And not a single one of them is better than the other, whatever their differences.
When a new penguin moves across the area to join this colony, he is afraid that he may not be accepted, because of his colouring. But here, each penguin is cherished for what makes them special - namely, that they are individuals.
So one may be neurodivergent and perceive the world differently, while another is smarter than the rest.
One may be an artistic introvert, while another is always ready to reach out and listen, and offer compassion.
One may struggle with inexplicable sadness, while another is happy despite his challenges.
But in the end, a penguin is a penguin.
This is a beautifully illustrated story about kindness, acceptance and individuality. It offers important lessons for young children, without ever crossing into preachiness. Highly recommended.
Thanks to NorthSouth Books Inc., NetGalley, and Marcus Pfister for the lovely opportunity to review the unique children’s book A Penguin Like Me. Through many examples of sweet penguins children are taught that it is okay to be different and that in fact our differences add to the whole making the world more beautiful and special. I loved each of the beautiful illustrations and thought tos was a awesome way to show kids how special they really are in their unique ways.
This new book by the author of the classic “Rainbow Fish” series uses a colony of penguins to teach a gentle lesson about embracing one’s differences. “Every penguin is different. But each one is a penguin.”
He begins by stating “From a distance we all look the same-simply a large group of penguins. But every one of us is different.” AS the story introduces various members of the colony, we meet a wide array of characters. Some penguins are different looking, very smart, gay, quiet and artistic or hiding behind a clown act. Some are obviously differently abled like the penguin with very short wings, another has hidden differences like the one with synesthesia. This story stresses that all these different penguins have something to contribute to the community. We are each special in our own way.
Pfister’s artwork is always enchanting. It tells the story in beautiful calming watercolors. Rather than a quaint story, this is more a gentle lesson on acceptance in the guise of a story. But don’t let that keep you from getting the book. Children will love this picture book! This story has a lot more text than many picture books and the target reader is much older than “Rainbow Fish”. I recommend this book for elementary school children and all penguin lovers.
Thank you to NetGalley and NorthSouth Books for providing me with an advance reader copy of this book to review.
A wonderful picture that supports individuality. The book explains how you can be yourself and still fit in society in a way that young readers can understand. 100% buying this when released for my niece and nephew. It is such an excellent resource to explain that everyone is different and that should be celebrated!
This super cute children’s book dives in on how everyone is different from looks to personalities. It teaches us that everyone is unique but everyone is still human. Human is human or as the story, penguins are penguins but what makes us different is alright in the world. Basic teachings of being kind and accepting.
My three children loved this story and the super cute illustrations.
As a mother, I loved the positive reinforcement of being able to fit in even though each one of us is different. The author truly instilled this throughout the whole story.
I received this book as an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. All opinions are mine and my children’s solely. Thank you Netgalley, the author, the illustrator and publisher for letting us experience this story first.
Very cute illustrations and an enjoyable story. This is a good read-a-loud options for kids under 8!
In this book A Penguin Like Me, Marcus Pfister takes the reader through a penguin community. "From a distance we all look the same-simply a large group of penguins. But ever one of us is different." Pfister then goes to describe multiple penguins in the community, some who like to draw, some who want to fly, some who like to talk and others who prefer to be quiet. Readers will learn about acceptance and belonging as they meet new members of this penguin community.
I really enjoyed this children's book which shows how everyone is different, and our differences are ok and should be celebrated within our community. I found the story engaging, and a good variety of differences, from sexual orientation, to differences in appearance, to disabilities was shown. I hope that this book will show kids that we should accept everyone no matter our differences.
The illustrations were nice, and the style used was really nice to show the ice and environment of Antarctica.
The moment I saw Marcus Pfister’s name I knew this book would be special and it sure is. His Rainbow Fish series is a major hit in the children’s picture book world. I hope A Penguin Like Me will see wide popularity, too. Using a cute penguin colony, we learn how individuals each have their own talent to add to their community. Readers may see themselves or friends they know reflected in the unique contribution of each individual in this penguin colony.
A Penguin Like Me is a beautiful little story about acceptance. In this colorful and brilliantly illustrated book, we are introduced to all kinds of penguins. From a distance, they all look alike, but once you get to know them individually, you realize that each one is unique in its own way. Sometimes the difference is something you can see, and sometimes it is internal. Just like people.
People are all different and unique, too. Sometimes you can see the differences looking at someone, and sometimes you can't - it's on the inside. We should get to know each other and we will realize that, even with our differences, we are all human.
Beautiful story of inclusion for young children. Important both as representation for those who feel different in some way, and also for those who don't, so they can learn that getting to know people and accepting and celebrating their differences is a wonderful thing!
Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review this advanced review copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest review on the book!
My daughter loves penguins and loved seeing the different penguins in this book! The lesson is a really good one for children. I like how it was written!
A cute story about accepting each other the way we are. I don't generally read a whole lot of children's fiction but I love The Rainbow Fish, so I had to check out this new book by the same author.
A Penguin Like Me is about a diverse colony of penguins. There's a smart penguin and an artistic penguin and a gay penguin and a penguin who wants to fly and even a penguin with synesthesia, along with lots of other unique penguins. And even though each penguin is different, they all belong together in the same colony.
The illustrations are adorable and the colors are soothing. The text, while nothing particularly lyrical, is engaging. The story itself is full of diversity and acceptance and inclusion. Each and every penguin in this book is special and accepted by the colony, not in spite of but because of their differences.
There's a decent amount of text in this picture book and it uses some bigger (but not particularly difficult) words. Because of this, I'd say it's geared toward the older end of picture book readers, probably early elementary school aged?
I'll definitely be buying a copy of this book for my niece when it comes out in March of 2024. It's super cute and perfect for any young penguin lover.
Many thanks to NetGalley and NorthSouth Books for providing me with an advance copy of this book to review.
