A very interesting topic and a decently entertaining story. However, I found the writing style to be just okay and the book itself got a bit repetitive eventually. Still, it's worth checking out, because the subject matter is pretty fun and original.
The real life story of a man who was deeply unhappy having to do something to justify his existence and how he decided to spend his life “doing nothing”.
I was originally interested in this book due to the subject matter. We live in a world that constantly makes us prove the necessity of our existence. This is wrong and I was interested to read the opinion of someone who thought the same. I struggled with this book, however.
It was hard for me to keep my patience with the book because I found it repetitive. While each part began with a different request, the rest was the same for me. The author discussed the constraints society has put on him and others, which led to his desire to do nothing. This discussion did not change over the course of the book, just the settings and people involved.
I also found it increasingly difficult to relate to the author as the book progressed. I understand why he was fed up with having to prove his existence was worthwhile and I could not relate to his long term do nothing “job”. That’s just me, however, and it’s not a life I would find fulfilling.
An interesting book overall, though.
This is an interesting premise for a book. This idea of “payment for being” propelled this business idea of being rented out for simply being there. Although this idea for the book is intriguing, the voice of the author is strained and makes the book quite difficult to read. It is missing a feeling of flow in the narrative.
