I truly enjoyed this book. The story was different from a lot of the fantasy I have read. It's set in more modern times in Chicago. The main character is a witch and a police detective for a supernatural police force. She ends up investigating a case about missing persons and it leads her to a secret vampire city. She has a hatred for vampires due to an incident that occurred in her childhood. She soon finds herself forced to team up with a powerful vampire who ends up making her question everything she knows. The romance in this book is slow burn and it is worth it. This storyline keeps you captivated and you won't want to put it down!
This was a quick read and a decent debut novel. It definitely reminded me in parts of Crescent City by Sarah J Maas but I liked the characters more, especially Theo.
I noticed some typos and inconsistencies, and the plot was honestly kind of simple/predictable. Some of the modern-day language was distracting and odd (for example, "vibes" and other phrases). The dialogue was unnatural at many points. I would have liked to see more resolving of her PTSD and other traumas, but it happened rather gradually. I'm unsure whether this is a series or not, because it seems like the end is open for continuation.
A good debut novel, and I hope the author continues in this genre.
I love books that are about supernatural detectives, and this one seemed like it would fit the bill. Oh, boy, did it do that in spades, and it doesn’t even really have anything to do with detecting. This was such a very wild ride with witches, vampires, and humans all in the center of an underground town that is a little at war with itself. I became so engrossed in this, time just went by so fast, and I was left feeling very satisfied by the end. There is great character development, wonderful characters, and so much more in this book. It really wasn’t what I was expecting, but it was so much more. I will definitely be looking for more by this author in the future. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
Like Salt And Ash is a brilliantly written enemies-to-lovers trope set in the supernatural world of Witches and Vampires…. among others.
We have a sassy witch with extraordinary powers who absolutely despises vampires. And a smooth, tall dark and handsome vampire who is trying to do the right thing.
They must find a way to work together to overcome the bad guys.
Fantastic world-building with a brilliant plotline. The characters are well-balanced overall and will have you rooting for them as the story unfolds.
Oh, and It's hot and steamy.
A fantastic addition to any supernatural or romance lovers.
I just reviewed Like Salt And Ash by Hazel Marie. #LikeSaltAndAsh #NetGalley
Witches, and Vamps, and Magick, Oh my!
Like Salt And Ash is a ride of a read, from the very first line. Main character, Ember, is exactly what I want in a heroine: stubborn, smart, and sexy with a healthy splash of trauma. Theo is every vamp loving reader's favorite: a secret cinnamon roll of an underlord with a penchant for sweet nicknames for his reluctant new house guest.
They come together, forming a wary alliance, and work to solve the mystery of Ember's ex's disappearance, which leads them to an underground (literally) human donor trafficking ring.
While the story lends to the dark and spooky, I loved every bit of the sweet and slow romance that buds between the two leads. With fresh takes on classic vampire mythology, Hazel Marie brings the perfect spooky season read for anyone who's craving that nostalgic vibe we all miss from Twilight's hayday.
