I enjoy the dark and twisted but maybe this one should come with a disclaimer? There is no gentle start to The Rose Reaper, you are thrown into the murderers macabre and twisted world and you hit the ground running.
I really enjoyed the authors writing style and found that any free moment I had I turned page after page, a train could have been going past and I'd have not noticed.
I'm not sure I have come across a plot similar to this in a while and having the different perspectives gave the storyline an edge. In the end my guess of the murderer was correct but it didn't make my reading journey any less enjoyable and I thought the chase was fantastic.
Seeing things from the murderers point of view gave a different insight and made the read more enjoyable.
I look forward to more from this author.
The Rose Reaper by J. Hunter is the second book in the Ryan Strickland Series.
For best reading experience I recommend to read the books in order. The previous book is The Lost Victim.
Kate survived a serial killer years ago. When new bodies show up she has to revisit her memories. She gets help from Ryan, a criminal psychologist.
TRR is a book that grabs you with both hands and doesn't let go anymore.
A psyh. thriller of its finest.
This is the second in the Ryan Strickland series and the first one that I have read of this series. This book has multiple points of view from Kate, Ryan and the killer which makes the characters that much more believable. I loved the psychological twists, the suspense and the thrill ride that I went on as I read this book. Definitely a page turner and couldn’t put it down until I finished it. Kate is a surviving victim of The Rose Reaper, who was killed when she escaped. Four years later a copycat killer starts to drop off Roses to Kate each time he kills, telling her that he will be coming for her. When the police can’t find anyway to stops this killer Kate calls Ryan Strickland the criminal psychologist that helped her four years ago to deal her experience. As Ryan starts to talk to Kate, she is remembering bits and pieces of information that she didn’t remember when the police first talked to her. Will she remember something that will help Ryan and the police find this serial killer. Will she become his 7th victim. You will need to read and find out what happens. Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for providing an advanced reader’s copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
4.5 stars
The Rose Reaper is a short (in my opinion) novel about Kate Doyle, a surviving victim of a serial killer, when a copycat killer arises and begins teasing her by leaving roses outside her door, representing a new victim taken. Kate has to go through the tough task of recalling her traumatic experience at the hands of the original killer in order to help solve the case; through the help of criminal psychologist, Ryan Strickland.
This book felt a lot like reading a Criminal Minds episode. There's always been something so fascinating to me about the psychological aspects of criminals and the lasting mental/emotional trauma they leave on their victims. It was very enjoyable for me to read a thriller that focused more on that than just finding out who did it. People are so complex, even the worst killers we can think of. The only thing I'd say that took me out of it was the glimpses into Ryan's personal life. I think if I had read the first installment I might care more but for me, it took away from what I had signed up to read.
Thank you, NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the copy of The Rose Reaper by Jennifer Hunter. Well, this isn’t what I was expecting! Parts of this are from the killer’s POV in the form of a journal, and it is so graphic it was uncomfortable to read. There are rave reviews though, so maybe I’m too sensitive? The story was good and the ending was a surprise, but I didn’t love it. If you’re looking for a fast read and can put up with some graphic scenes, you might love this one. It was a bit much for me. 2.5 stars rounded up to 3.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. Thank you, NetGalley for this ARC.
This book is the 2nd in a series and although I enjoyed the book, I would have liked reading the first book first. I love psychological thrillers. Not only because I love the tension, but as a former behavioural analyst and psychotherapist I like to dive into the brains of criminals, especially serial offenders. What I liked about this book is that you dive into Kate her brains. Kate is the surviving victim of a serial killer but when a copycat drops bodies, Kate has to dig into her memories to unravel any clues that might lead to this new “serial killer”, with the help of criminal psychologist Ryan. The suspense, tension and mystery was making me turn the pages. I liked the characters, especially Ryan as it was easy for me to connect with him on a professional interest. Jennifer her writing style grabbed me and gosh, I enjoyed unraveling the clues and finding the killer. I will definitely read the first book as I'm intrigued what happened before. I suggest reading the first book before this one, but recommend this series to everyone who likes psychological thrillers.
I really like this series about criminal psychologist Ryan Strickland. The first book was more about his family and this one more about the serial killer. Kate was the only one that got away from the Rose Reaper and now a copycat is after her. Will Ryan and Kate stop the killer before he gets to Kate?
A breath stealing, heart pounding mystery thriller that will have you guessing until the end.
When Kate begins to be tormented by the man she knows to be dead she tries to tell someone but no one believes her. That is until they find out she was absolutely correct. When she calls Ryan to come and help her from losing her mind he comes immediately.
Will Ryan and Kate be able to help stop this killer or will the police ignore them?
Read this excellent book that evokes such a response. I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
