Really inventive illustrations accompany the story of a girl and dog who are looking for companionship and find each other. They initially try to build friends out of plants, sticks, or snow, but each time fails. This book is truly something special and made my Top 12 Children’s Reads of 2023!
This is a sweet beautiful story. As a dog lover, I can't wait to read this to my kids. Joy needed Jump and Jump needed Joy; and the sentiment is portrayed so beautifully in this story. I really liked the simple illustrations throughout and the way they changed when joy was found. The best way to describe this simple picture book: It left a smile on my face.
For as long as she could remember, Joy has wanted a dog. For as long as he could remember Jump (a dog) has wanted a human. Season after season of creating a friend, Joy and Hump eventually discover each other. Beautiful illustrations convey the longing and hopefulness of both Joy and Jump.
All the while Joy searched for THE dog meant for her, there was a dog named Jump looking for a kid of his own. This sweet, touching story is a treat for dog lovers of all ages. (And, I love how the world bursts into color when they find each other.)
Jump for Joy was adorable. It’s one of those picture books where the artwork really plays a role in telling the story and setting the mood. Much of the book was inky, in black and white stippling and hatching, with our main characters in color that looked painted, like gouache. It really helped the reader feel the loneliness and longing as the little girl and the dog searched for each other. The colors practically burst out of the pages when they finally met, and gave a huge emotional payout. It was beautiful.
I was given an advanced copy for review purposes and it was truly a joy to read.
This is a very cute story, though I do feel like it's a story that has been told many times before, in many different ways. I'm not sure that this is a terribly different retelling, but the illustrations really set it apart, as does the illustrator's use of color. I would still recommend it and will likely get it for my library because I think kids will enjoy it.
Thanks to Netgalley and Astra for the ARC of this!
What an adorable story of a kid and a dog who were meant for each other! My kids enjoyed this a lot. The illustrations were extremely cute.
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read the ARC for this delightful book. This is a wonderful story about finding your four-legged or two-legged friend. The illustrations beautifully portray the character's imagination and the use of full color illustrations are the end highlight the joy their both feel.
A cute story about a little girl who has always wanted a dog. It’s all she can think about. The illustrations are very well done. I highly recommend this book.

Sweet story of a human that wants a dog and a dog that wants their human. They try different ways to fill their need for each other. Eventually, their paths cross and Jump and Joy are united.
This was cute.
Joy has always loved dogs and jump has always loved kids. And when they meet, sparks fly.

Thank you Netgalley and Astra publishing for the ARC in exchange of an honest review.
Joy has always wanted a dog and Jump has always wanted an owner/friend. In this delightful picture book, the author takes us through a journey of discovery which culminates with Joy and Jump finding each other. Each page shows the reader either Joy or Jump finding/making a friend - but it's never quite right. The illustrations by Hadley Hopper are wonderfully detailed and they perfectly match the search for a companion.
It's a lovely book and its a recommendable read.
This is a cute book told from the perspective of a girl and a dog who are both seeking each other. I think this would be such a cute gift to let a child know they're getting a dog. The illustrations are adorable and engaging and add so much to the story, especially with the use of color.
I received an electronic ARC from Astra Young Readers through NetGalley.
Readers meet a girl named Joy and a dog named Jump. Both yearn to for a friend. A dog for Joy; a kid for Jump. Readers see them create their own friends out of various natural materials but they fall apart and don't last. Gray Ruelle moves us through the seasons until Spring arrives again. While looking at the plants that grew from their sculptures, they see each other. A friendship is formed and both get their wish. The simple illustrations capture the loneliness and yearning as well as the creative ways they make their own friends.
This book feels so wholesome!!!! For the kids who have always wanted a pet dog, this is for you! Yes, parents and teachers, get this book for them.
I find the book quite interesting as how it describes the characters and their emotions perfectly. The first half is all about how Joy, a little girl, who has always wanted a dog and Jump, a little dog, who has always wanted to be with a kid.
The second half gets so colourful and their journey is so beautiful. Just get this book for the kids. It’s beautiful.
Thank you, Astra Young Readers, for the advance reading copy.
What a wonderful book! Joy has always wanted a dog. So she made fake dogs. Jump has always wanted a kid. So Jump made fake kids. Neither of those worked out until one day Joy and Jump found each other by accident. Such a heartwarming ending.
A cute read! This book is perfect for kids that love dogs. A cute read of a little girl hoping to one day find the dog of her dreams. Cute cute cute!
Beautiful artwork, a sweet story, AND it involves dogs?! There’s nothing better! This story has such wonderful illustrations; the mixed media really brought depth into the storytelling. I would purchase this purely for the illustrations, but the fact that the story is also endearing is such a bonus. 🩷
A gentle story of waiting, wishing, hoping... and of dreams coming true! Beautiful!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher.
