Her Husband's Mistake is a twisty family thriller.
I love Daniel Hurst work and his latest doesn't disappoint. It's not quite as fast paced as some of his previous work but there are moments of surprise, mostly towards the end of the book.
Jack and Lorna are dreading taking their young adult children to New York for a family vacation. The kids have foggy memories of the brief time the family lived in New York many years ago. They never understood why their parents suddenly uprooted their home there to move back to England. Jack and Lorna had no choice. They were running away from a terrible secret they thought to be long buried. But secrets have a way of catching up with you, especially when you revisit the city where the terrible thing happened. Will Jack and Lorna be able to save their family this time?
Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me an audio version of this title in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is one of those audiobooks that you just have to keep listening to; I found myself hoping for a traffic jam just so I could keep listening so invested I was in this book.
The narrators did a brilliant job of bringing the characters to life and the story was gripping with some great twists and turns. The characters are well developed and although I didn't particularly like the main characters of Jack and Lorna, it didn't really matter too much. The pace is steady and overall I was entertained.
Recommended to those who enjoy a pretty good thriller which makes you wonder how far you would go to get revenge and thanks to the author, Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for enabling me to listen to and share my thoughts of Her Husband's Mistake.
No lie, the husband made a huge mistake. And now they are all paying for it. Daniel has done it again. A nail biter that leaves you hanging on and then gives you that twist at the end. This one was a little sad. I enjoyed the plot and the story. I always look forward to the twist at the end. McFaddenesk. Can't wait for the next one.
Lorna & Jack left from NYC 15yrs after a devastating event – but now that their daughter Maddy and Jack are turning 21 & 18 respectively they are forced to return back to NYC as their birthday present.
Lorna is not too happy about this but makes peace with this idea as it’s just a 4 days trip. Everything seems to be going well, until the kids go missing the same day and in 2 different places.
As the investigation begins, old secrets are forced to come out.
This book was a 3 star read for me – it was neither meh nor super yay as the story felt like a bit too much and unbelievable – while the suspect says they were keeping tabs via social media it felt unbelievable because you really can’t trust everything that is out there on social media right?
Nonetheless, thank you to netgalley, Bookouture Audio and Daniel Hurst for approving the audiobook ARC. The narrators did a great job in this one!
Jack and Lorna moved to New York due to work reasons from UK. They have a young family and fled back to the UK after Jack done a bad thing in NY. 15yrs later, their children want a holiday to NY for their big birthdays, even though Jack and Lorna don't want to go there due to past. Children go missing
Short and sweet audio. I didn't enjoy this audio much but did manage to read it. I just didn't find it gripping at all and was tempted to abandon it.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookoutre audio
The characters are well-developed though not necessarily likeable. None of them are whom they appear to be. If you are looking for a thriller with a complex but believable plot surrounded by lots of action, this book is for you. This provocative, somewhat dark and twisted story grabs you from the first page and keeps you guessing until the very end where the author inserts a deliciously wicked twist.
I couldn’t put it down.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio who provided me with a copy of this book. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Another thoroughly enjoyable novel by Daniel Hurst! I feel like they’re firmly on track now (I know I know who am I etc etc) but after reading the last title I said I wished he trusted the reader a little bit more, that done over explaining was unnecessary therefore adding the kudos that I felt growth this time around.
A fairly short but gripping fast paced domestic thriller, both wholly believable and relatable. The characters felt authentic. The story was well structured and executed and it worked beautifully as an audiobook.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookature Audio for the opportunity to listen to this audio book in return for an honest review!
I really enjoyed this book. It was a fast paced fun ride. A week away in New York turns into a frightening nightmare. This is my first by this author and I will check out the rest of his books!
Thank you to netgalley for an arc of this book in exchange for a honest review.
The king of twists, author Daniel Hurst, is back following The Doctor's Widow with a twisty standalone psychological thriller, HER HUSBAND'S MISTAKE —this time taking readers outside of England to NYC on vacation with their family to the scene of the crime.
This is not their first trip to the Big Apple. Jack did a horrific thing years ago, and they swore they would never return. Someone is waiting for them with REVENGE on their mind in this suspenseful race against time. Who will make it out alive?
Lorna and Jack are an English couple who 15 years ago lived in New York with Jack's job. However, one night, a tragedy occurred that would change the trajectory of their lives. A husband's bad mistake will now cost the family. You can't hide forever.
At the time, Jack finally confessed to Lorna (implicating her), and they decided to return to England rather than confessing or going to the authorities. Thus far, they have managed to keep this under the radar.
However, it is the children's upcoming birthday, and Maddie and Alex want to go to NYC to see the sites. They cannot say no to their children. Jack and Lorna think returning to the crime scene is a bad mistake. However, they cannot tell the children about the past, so they agree.
They did not consider social media and the kids posting that would leave them open for REVENGE and a deadly game of cat-and-mouse.
Jack made a terrible mistake years ago, and they soon realize they are making a second mistake by going back.
They arrive in New York. Maddie is going to a baseball game with her dad and Alex to the theater with his mom when they both turn up missing.
The kids have no idea that their parents dreaded this trip and what has occurred in the past. Frantic, the parents contact the authorities, but soon, the couple put two and two together, realizing this is about the past and payback. How did they know? Now, they are kidnapped, and it is not money they want. The entire family is in danger.
Their past has caught up with them.
The worst request is what Lorna has to do to free her children. Will she do it? If she does, can she believe the kidnapper will return her children safely? This scene will make you hold your breath.
HER HUSBAND'S MISTAKE is a fun, short, and entertaining thriller that will keep you on edge in this spine-chilling domestic suspense to see how this will turn out. The scary part is that this is a realistic situation and could happen in real life.
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Tamsin Kennard and Nathaniel Priestley, who were fantastic and delivered an engaging performance.
Thanks to Hachette UK - Bookouture for a gifted ALC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest opinion.

My Rating: 4.5 Stars (Audiobook)
Pub Date: Sept 30, 2023
Sept 2023 Must-Read Books
I listened to the audio of this book and whilst it was ok, I think the blurb gave the whole story away so I didn't find that there were any unexpected twists or turns as the book progressed. I don't know if this is just me, but I also found it really hard to connect with the book or the characters properly as there was minimal character development - I didn't find myself feeling sorry for the children, anxious for the parents or angry for any of them at any point and this is purely down to the lack of development of the characters.
For the last maybe 30% of the book I was bored and it felt like the story dragged on for a long time. There weren't enough twists, turns or shocks to keep me engaged for the full book and I think it may have been more engaging if it had been a bit shorter.
Overall it's a good plot, but the delivery didn't quite hit the mark for me and I don't think its a particularly fast-paced thriller but I do love nitty-gritty thrillers with lots of mystery and questions more so this book may be more suited to you if you like thrillers with clearer plots from the very beginning!
Thanks to Netgalley and the Publisher for the arc!
Thank you to Net gallery for the chance to listen to the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
Having recently listened to Til Death do us part (another of Daniels books), I was excited to be accepted to listen to this one.
The book is written from the point of view of the four main characters and the narrators Tamsin Kennard and Nathaniel Priestly are fantastic with their narration.
I couldn’t put this book down and it kept me guessing because (and this is why I gave it 4 stars not 5!) I didn’t read the synopsis! I requested this book on the basis I loved the other book I read, I then read reviews that said the synopsis gave too much away so I purposely didn’t look. Reading it afterwards I tend to agree.
And for that reason, I’m not going to share all of it like I usually do!
Synopsis….(Anna’s shorter version!)
This should be the trip of a lifetime – a week in New York with my family. As we stroll along the Hudson River, drinking coffee in the sunshine, anyone would think we’re the perfect family. But the truth is far more complicated.
I’ve been on edge the whole time because fifteen years ago when we were living in this city my husband Jack did something that ripped our lives apart. I swore I would never come back here, but Jack insisted.
One afternoon, in the blur of a crowd, I lose sight of my son. I can’t find him anywhere. Frantic, I call my husband. But what he tells me next shakes me to the core…
Lorna and Jack are headed back to New York City at their children's request for their birthdays. They never wanted or expected to go back there.
While there enjoying the sites, both children go missing from separate spots. The parents are terrified that what happened all those years ago has come back to haunt them.
I listened to the audio version and enjoyed it except for the constant references of New York City being read as
N Y C . I found that to be a little irritating.
The main characters were well written and believable. It was easy to discern which one was speaking. A few twists and turns along the way increased my enjoyment of the story. I have read other books by the author that I liked more, but still enjoyed this one.
Thanks to netgalley and Bookouture Audio for the arc.
Something about Daniels books that keep me entertained! The audio was great I love the narration especially at 1.7x speed.
Lorna & Jack have kept a secret of something they did in NY years ago but now years later they go back to NY & are forced deal with the consequences.
I enjoyed the book but not as much as other ones I’ve read by him.
The very last chapter was a good twist!
Thriller & action packed.
3.5⭐
Genre ~ thriller
Setting ~ NYC
Publication date ~ September 30, 2023
Page Count ~ 217 (31 chapters p+e)
Audio length ~ 5 hours 35 minutes
Narrator ~ Nathaniel Priestley, Tamsin Kennard
POV ~ multiple 1st
Featuring ~ old secrets, revenge
Lorna & Jack have been keeping a secret for 15 years. A secret that will come back to bite them when they visit NYC again with their older kids, Maddie & Alex.
Not a new plot, but fast paced and action packed, which is what I come to expect from this author. An enjoyable afternoon listen. Loved the surprise ending.
Narration notes:
They both did fine, but I could have went for them to alter their voices a smidgen when they were speaking for Maddie & Alex. Tamsin did a nice job doing an American accent.
I am not sure I loved the story all that much to be honest, but I did really enjoy the audio narration of this book. I loved that the book was set in NYC, being a NY native myself. I thought the premise was very good, I just felt that the plot had some holes and you really had to suspend disbelief in many cases. I would say it was a solid 3 star read. It was fast paced and something you could definitely entertain yourself listening to while working on crafts or doing your chores.
Her Husband’s Mistake by Daniel Hurst* was, unfortunately, not for me. I found the writing to be very stilted, elementary and overly descriptive to the point that I wondered whether he was trying to hit a word count (for real, there were multiple sentences that were like “We discussed the plane food that was served to stave off our appetites during the flight”. My dude, you just described the function of food?!).
In brief, a woman and her husband return to New York with their young adult kids for the trip of a lifetime. What the kids don’t know is that, 15 years prior, they left the city under a cloud as their dad did something unthinkable. Now, the people he harmed are out for revenge. I won’t even go into how ludicrous the plot is, how awful the characters are and how the pacing favoured quick reveals rather than suspenseful build-ups.
I upgraded it from 1-star to 2-stars because I think the narrators did a good job with the material they had but the way New York was clearly referred to as NYC throughout the entire text started to give me the ick when I heard “En Y Cee” for the 200th time in a row.
This thriller was not, in fact, thrilling.

Her Husband's Mistake
Daniel Hurst
🌟🌟🌟🌟
This is the third book that I've read by Hurst now and they've all been great!
We meet the family as they prepare for a big holiday to New York. The children are 18 & 21 this year and it's a special treat.
However, the parents are clearly disturbed and worried about returning to NY - but we don't know why.
The apprehension doesn't diminish once they arrive, but they all make plans for a trip to the theatre and a baseball game - when the children go missing, we start to hear about what happened 15years ago!
I loved that we are told quite early on that something had happened in New York 15years ago, but it's a long while before we actually find out what this is.
The story is told through multiple pov's which helps us to understand the story bit by bit, but we are also able to get a feel for the worries and emotions of each character.
It was easy to connect with our 4 main characters who were relatable and believable - the excitement of the children visiting the famous NYC then their fear when taken - and the parents worries about the past catching up on them and then total chaos as they try and find their children.
This was quite a short book and therefore a super quick read - the tension evident from start to finish making me race through it.
The plot seemed fairly cut and dry but there were a couple of surprises and the epilogue was brilliant - totally hadn't expected that!!
I'm wondering from that, whether there might be a sequel to this one? 🤞
💕Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for my ARC copy - this is my honest review 💕
I chose Her Husband's Mistake as the accompaniment to my Sunday cleaning routine and, I have to say, it certainly made the time go faster and the work feel less like the chore it was! I listened straight through and really enjoyed it. There were admittedly a few moments that required a slightly larger suspension of disbelief than the norm in order to keep up the pace of the book, but not enough to spoil the entertainment.
Daniel Hurst knows how to deliver a quick entertaining thriller with surprising twists! 🍎
Something happened in New York City 15 years ago and Lorna and Jack vow never to return. When Maddie (21) and Alex (18) make the NYC holiday their birthday wish, Lorna crumbles.
Wow, this one kept me guessing. The author kept me in the dark until he decided to give it away which then I became conflicted about who to root for!
The family holiday becomes a worst nightmare and someone is doomed to make very tough decisions.
When you're looking for a fun popcorn thriller that you can finish in one or two sittings, Hurst's thrillers are an excellent choice. I enjoyed this audiobook with great narration by Tamsin Kennard and Nathaniel Priestley. Hurst knows how to end an exciting thriller and makes me crave for more!
Being a Daniel Hurst fan, his novels are my must-read. I didn't read the blurb which many reviewers have said was full of spoilers. Rest assured, it's been updated without giving much away.
Thank you Bookouture Audio for the ALC.
Maddie and Alex want to visit New York, the place they spent the first years of their lives growing up in. But, both Lorna and Jack are reluctant as they have a secret and which could destroy everything.
Soon the family are in New York but very quickly things go wrong, Marrie and Alex are missing but what will Jack and Lorna have to do to get them back?
Told through the point of view of the four main characters' this novel kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what happens next.
I loved every character in this as they all had an important part to play.
Hurst has given another fast-paced unputdownable read. One of my go-to authors.
