There's no question that Daniel Hurst has quickly become one of my new favorite authors. His books are just fun! They will keep you guessing until the very end, and Her Husband's Mistake is no exception.

This book follows Jack and Lorna and their two kids as they jet set from the UK to a fabulous New York vacation. The catch? The family used to live in the Big Apple and left behind a dark secret that they have never wanted to encounter again. But despite their dark past, Jack and Lorna feel they should grant their kids' wish of a trip back to NYC. Will their past catch up with them? Most likely!

This book features the amazingly crafty twists and turns that I've come to love from Daniel Hurst. He has a real flare for coming up with twists that don't feel too over the top and have a great natural pace. I was dying to find out what had happened in the past and was certainly shocked when I found out!

Thanks to the publisher for granting me an early edition of the audiobook. It was super fun and I can't wait for Hurst's next release!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for gifting me an audio ARC of the latest thriller by Daniel Hurst and wonderfully narrated by Tamsin Kennard and Nathaniel Priestley - 3.5 stars rounded up!

Jack and Lorna used to live in NYC with their two children, Maddie and Alex, but moved to London. They swore they would never return, but Maddie begged them to go there to celebrate her birthday. But the trip was far from a celebration.

I'm a fan of Daniel Hurst and I really enjoyed the audiobook narration of this one. It's a short book though, so go into it with as little info as possible so as not to ruin any surprises. Neither of the parents are very likable characters but I felt bad for their children. Told from multiple POV, this was a quick, tense thriller.

I enjoyed reading the book. It was short, fast paced and had its twists. I believe it is not an easy job to achieve those in such a short read. Though being half length of a usual novel, this book manages to convey the mystery and thrill of a past mistake, which affects the current days.
There was no time to build characters, but again, the author manages to tell (though not show enough) of the main protagonists.
The mystery was so-so, pushing you to read the story till the end.
The action itself is poor and some of the happenings unbelievable, maybe only because they were not described in enough detail. I will retain from giving spoilers, but once read, you will definitely know what I mean.

Jack and Lorna are preparing to take their children back to New York, where they lived 15 years ago, for their upcoming birthdays. The couple are worried that their past might return to haunt them if they go back and it doesn't take long before their worst fears are realised and their children are kidnapped.

The Husband's Mistake is a fast paced, gripping thriller which had me right from the start. I thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook version of this book, with both male and female narrators; I find that this always helps me to get to 'know' characters quicker.

I have read a few of Daniel Hurst's books recently and have very much enjoyed them all; a new favourite author maybe?

My thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for sending me this ARC in return for an honest review.

Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review. This was a quick audio book and the narrators were good as well. What would you do if your husband confessed that he made a huge mistake? Would you stand by him or turn him in? Well Lorna decided to stand by her husband Jack and they took their small children and left New York to move back to England to escape that horrible mistake once and for all. Fast forward to today and their son is turning 18 and their daughter is turning 21 and the one birthday gift they both want is to go to New York City. What your children don't know is that Lorna and Jack have always said they could NEVER return to that City ever again. How can they deny their children this one birthday wish and still keep the secret that could alter their lives forever. Once the family arrives in NYC Lorna can't even enjoy the trip as she is on edge the entire time knowing that they should never have returned to the place that they so desperately left years ago. Then while she is at a performance with her son, he does not return from the restroom and she can't find him anywhere but when she calls Jack to tell him she is absolutely horrified to find out that Jack can't find their daughter either...Enjoy!!!

Jack & Lorna always try to give their kids the world... but when the kids want to go to New York for their birthdays, Jack & Lorna aren't so sure. The idea of returning to the city they lived in as newlyweds should be nostalgic..... but it's also returning to the scene of a crime. Ultimately deciding enough time has passed, the family sets off from England to the United States, only to have their dream vacation turn into a nightmare.

I'm a big fan of this author but this was hands down my favorite so far! While I think the blurb gave away too much away and made it pretty predictable, it still managed to be extremely fast paced. I absolutely couldn't put it down. It was a one day read for me and I can't imagine anyone starting it and not having to finish. Parts of this story put the characters that positions that as a wife and a mom made my stomach turn, but it never got so over the top that I stopped reading.

Highly recommended for anyone who loves a good page turner!

Welcome to New York City!

There was a perfectly good reason Jack and Lorna left New York, swearing to never return. But how could they say no to their 2 kids who want nothing more than to visit The Big Apple?

Those two should have listened to their instincts!

Daniel Hurst is the King of the popcorn thrillers.🍿 So you know you’ll be treated to some wicked twists! And of course he didn’t disappoint with this latest. But, perhaps it was just a bit too OTT for me.

If you ‘re looking for a lite, entertaining thriller to lose yourself in over the weekend then make sure to pick this one up!

I listened to the audio and enjoyed the dual narration provided by Tamsin Kennard, Nathaniel Priestley.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio.

So Daniel Hurst is one of my go to authors and I can just about listen/read any book written by him - does this mean that they are all brilliant. No, but they work and they are great release and I can escape whilst trying to work out what has happened and why. So I will always give it a read.

This one has an intriguing concept, yes you do have to go with the plot devices but they work and there is a sufficient level of intrigue to keep you completely engaged.
The narration really worked and I enjoyed it

I was given an advance copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.

This book is one of the best by Daniel Hurst.
It has short chapters which I love, multiple POV and a crazy story line!
This book had twists and turns that you are never able to guess.
Towards the end I found myself sitting there wondering what the heck just happened as I did not see it coming!
I don't usually like audio books but I really enjoyed listening to this one and loved their British accents.
I highly recommend any Daniel Hurst book for a good read, he hasn't written a bad one yet!

Her Husband’s Mistake by Daniel Hurst is a dark psychological thriller that asks the question: could you choose between your children and your spouse?

When a couple from the UK discovers their children have gone missing soon after their return to NYC, it becomes obvious these are not isolated events. The double abduction is the result of the terrible accident that caused the couple to run from NYC 15 years ago.

Justice wasn’t served when the couple fled and now a mysterious caller has called with a price; a life for a life.

Daniel Hurst always delivers a fast paced, engaging thriller with twists and turns after you thought the twists and turns had been revealed. I will always dive into his stories with excitement!

Thank you NetGalley, Daniel Hurst, and Bookouture Audio for the opportunity to listen to the amazing audiobook ahead of the proposed release on September 30th in exchange for honest feedback.

This was an interesting and juicy mess!

Lorna and Jack were transplants living in NYC during the financial crisis. They had two children and were having a good time until something really bad happened. They mention this repeatedly without telling you details so you know it's super bad and it seems like the bad thing is something they did and escaped punishment.

After the bad thing, they moved back home to Europe, swearing off New York for life but their kids want to go back as a birthday gift and see where they spent their early years. Instead of just saying no like I would, they get cajoled into it and of course the bad thing comes for them and wants vengeance, even after all this time.

I've read a few books lately of foreign authors writing about NYC trying not to sound touristy and failing and this was no different. A lot of the culture points and bureaucratic politics didn't quite add up. I'd always prefer for people to just write about where they live and know. This happens within the US as well, for instance when an author from another region tries to write a Southern book. It wasn't ruined by this, I just thought I'd weigh in on that tidbit.

It's told in quad narration but mostly by the two parents. We hear from the kids occasionally. I think there were too many narrators but if we had to do that, I would have liked to have heard more from the son.

All in all, it was a really good quick read on a Friday night! I really like Daniel Hurst. I think his writing is evolving beautifully. This isn't a favorite but it kept me guessing and I felt it was quite original.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review.

A British family visits NYC and the kids go missing. Thus is uncovered a terrible secret the parents are hiding. This was such a fun read, especially on audio. The narration gave it more flavor. The premise is good but the pacing is great! I got through it in one day because I just HAD to know what the big secret was and if everyone made it out ok. I look forward to reading more by this author.

I love Daniel Hurst books, they are always solid reads for me. That being said, this was prob my least fav of his. I prefer his books with more twists and a faster pace. This one was slow and I didn’t like a single character.

It did keep my interest and I was able to finish it within a day. It’s not a long book. The narrators are good.

I was just waiting for more as far as what the “mistake” was. Don’t get me wrong, the mistake was awful but it wasn’t like a mind blowing thing like I have come to expect from Daniel Hurst’s books. It wasn’t anything sinister, it was just a tragic mistake…nothing sinister involved.

Overall I’m glad I read it, no regrets with his books. They are easy reads but some I just like better than others. I still recommend checking it out to decide for yourself. I remain psyched about whatever he comes out with next.

This is my second novel I have gotten a chance to experience by this author and he has yet to disappoint!

This novel follows a couple from England who are taking their children on vacation to NYC as their birthday gifts. This isn’t their first trip there - 15 years earlier they called NYC home but abruptly left during the financial crisis in2008 (but for a seemingly much darker reason). They have asked their children not to post on social media and have been dreading their return to the States in fear of what could happen when they get there. When their 18 year old and 21 year children go missing.. the dark secrets start to come out.

What I love most about thrillers is not knowing what is going to happen next and the struggles the characters go through to make the right decisions. It grabbed me from the very beginning and I couldn’t stop until the very end. The internal turmoil of the mother and the selfishness of her husband until the very end kept me guessing and on the edge of my seat.

The only negative is that from the very beginning they hint at this awful mistake that occurred 15 years ago and it was annoying me that they wouldn’t hurry up and tell me what it was. Some readers may enjoy that though.

4 stars and I look forward to more by this author! Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC to review.

Her Husband's Mistake by Daniel Hurst
Narrated by Tamsin Kennard, Nathaniel Priestley

I received an advance review copy for free thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Blurb

A week in New York with my family should be the trip of a lifetime--yet I’ve been on edge the whole time because fifteen years ago, when we were living in this city, my husband did something that ripped our lives apart. I swore I would never come back, but he insisted. As we stroll along the Hudson River, drinking coffee in the sunshine, anyone would think we’re the perfect family. But the truth is far more complicated.

My Opinion

There is something about a Daniel Hurst book that just draws me in from the beginning and keeps me coming back for every new book that I see. This is a short book but there is an awful lot going on.

If you are planning on reading this book then I would recommend staying away from the full blurb for this book as it give away a lot of the plot. This is a great, quick paced thriller. Another gripping thriller from Daniel Hurst.

I listened to this one in two days, that does not happen often. So this kept me well intrigued. The story feels like it goes super-fast though, like I just got into it and here's the plot. But do you really know the plot? Is what you think true? Probably not. The narrators did a good job. I listened at 2x the speed with no problems at all understanding and following along. I will definitely be checking out more of this author's books, this was my first and won't be my last. #HerHusbandsMistake #NetGalley

Book Title: Her Husband’s Mistake
Author: Daniel Hurst
Narrators: Tamsin Kennard and Nathaniel Priestley
Publisher: Bookouture Audio
Genre: Domestic Thriller
Pub Date: September 30, 2023
My Rating: 3.4 stars~

Jack and Lorna Thompson are from the UK but lived in New York for Jack work in 2002 but moved back to England in 2008. The children Maddie and Alex were very young and believe they missed out a lot by not staying in New York. Now that they have birthdays coming up – Maddie will be twenty-one and Alex eighteen; they want to go to ‘the big Apple’ for a vacation. However, as the title indicates something happened in New York and Jack and Lorna swore they would never go back.
They don’t want to disappoint their children so the family heads to New York. While there in two separate events Lorna and Alex attending a Broadway play and Jack and Maddie are attending a Yankee’s baseball game. Both the children are kidnapped.
Lorna gets a call telling her she can have her children back if she kills her husband for what he did all those years ago. Lorna is torn what is the right thing to do she loves Jack as she loves both her children.
I like Maggie and Alex and certain didn’t want anything bad to happen to them. Cannot say I liked Jack and Lorna.in fact, found them unlikeable as well as clueless many times.

This is my thirteenth Daniel Hurst's story.. I became a big fan back when I read "The Couple in the Cabin".. Although this story doesn’t have the typically ‘Hurst’ twists and turns - I couldn’t predict the ending.
From what is said in the epilogue it looks like there is going to be a sequel.
I believe this is going a novel that will certainly add to any book club discussion ~
What would you do if you were Lorna?

Audiobook narrators Tamsin Kennard and Nathaniel Priestley do a great job in their performance of these characters!

Want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for this early audiobook.
Publishing Release Date scheduled for September 30, 2023
