I now run, don't walk, when I see that Daniel Hurst has a new book or audio out. Holy cow, he is such a fantastic writer and this one is excellent. Excellent narration in the audio and the ending made my mouth drop wide open. I was not expecting that ending! It was fast paced and I loved all the characters in the audio. Highly recommend this one! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release. To be published September 30, 2023.
I listened to the audio version of this book, while I liked the plot and location, the children irritated me. They acted like spoiled brats and got everything they wanted. The parents used to live in NYC and the children wanted to go back for their 18th and 21st birthdays. The parents knew it was a mistake, but did it regardless. It’s a fast paced thriller and would recommend it.
The narrators read the story well, apart from the bad American accent. They told the story well and enjoyed listening to both.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for a copy.
ARC audiobook provided in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed the dual narration on this book! It made it very clear and easy to remember who was speaking and really brought the characters to life! The story is about a seemingly normal family in England who plan a trip to New York to celebrate their children’s birthdays but have been dreading it because of something that happened when they lived there in the past. The story half my attention the entire time and I can honestly say I didn’t see the ending coming at all. If you’re into psychological thrillers and mysteries, try this book out!
This was... not great. It's a perfectly fine thriller and the narrators did a good job but too much of it grated on me to find it fully enjoyable.
1. If I had to hear "NYC" said like that one more time I might have screamed.
2. This is set in a modern day setting and I'm supposed to believe and 18 year old and a 21 year old would bond of their mutual attraction to David Beckham?! I asked my 18 year old brother which male celebrities his generation found attractive and him and his friends listed a whole bunch and when asked about David Beckham the response was "he's only attractive to mums".
3. Every character was awful, annoying, occasionally downright immoral and I could not route for them at all. I didn't want anyone to win.
Thanks to #NetGalley and #BookoutureAudio for the ARC #HerHusbandsMistake by #DanielHurst. This book is absolutely amazing like all of Daniels books! I couldn’t put it down and already sad I am finished with it. Along with an ending I couldn’t imagine, it was full of secrets, murder and choices that had to be made. Brilliant!!!!
I really do think this book could be good, and I will look at purchasing it as a paperback or digital copy to read. However, as an audio book, I just couldn't finish it unfortunately. The narrator's just didn't give it the edge and tension it needed to keep you hooked, which is unfortunate, as it had potential.
A trip of a lifetime gone wrong! You'll be asking yourself what would I do to protect my family. This book was fast-paced, kept me up all night, and did not disappoint. The narrators were fantastic in the audiobook version and really brought the story to life!
Thank you, Daniel Hurst, Bookouture, and NetGalley for the audio version ARC for an honest review.

“A week in New York with my family should be the trip of a lifetime--yet I’ve been on edge the whole time because fifteen years ago, when we were living in this city, my husband did something that ripped our lives apart. I swore I would never come back, but he insisted. As we stroll along the Hudson River, drinking coffee in the sunshine, anyone would think we’re the perfect family. But the truth is far more complicated.”
I always love a good thriller by Daniel Hurst and listening to this one as an audiobook was so fun! I really enjoyed both of the narrators and how they made the story come to life. The audio was a really quick listen and I found myself constantly wanting to pick it back up throughout the day. I enjoyed the drama and twists and it was an entertaining listen.
Thank you to @netgalley @bookoture and @danielhurstbooks for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook which comes out September 30th! All opinions are honest and my own.
I liked the full cast of narrators. Their performances are the only reason I made it as far as I did.

Nothing and I truly mean NOTHING happens for the first 1/3 of the book. I quickly grew tired of the circular carrot-stick approach. Every few paragraphs the parents referenced the "very bad thing" they did in NYC 15 years ago and their anxiety/fear about going back to NYC with their two adult children. Literally every page is each character saying "we're going to NYC!" and then the parents in their mind being "worried about what we did" with endless vagueness.
I quit around 18% and went to bed. This morning I thought I'd give it to 25% and still no park of the plot had advanced at all. I started to wonder if the entire book was these 4 people traveling to NYC.
They finally get there and at 32% something actually happens. Both of their kids (18 and 21) are kidnapped. The 21yo daughter from a Yankees game the 18yo son from a Broadway show. The father was getting a snack at the Yankees game and the son went to the mens toilets at the show with the mother. Both parents are hysterical and the wife wants to tell the police about the "very bad thing" but the husband won't let her.
At 57% it is finally (finally!) revealed what they did and it is extremely anticlimatic. If you're going to spend more than half of a book to tell me AND remind me they did something bad every other paragraph it can't be a [see below for the spoiler].
What's worse is the kidnapper is written in a cartoonish manner and it is totally unbelievable. She's also a billionaire, of course. If you want to know more, see below but it is a very mild spoiler.
The only think I liked was the low key and probably unintentional point made about the perils of social media and how you endanger yourself. Example: The 18yo son wants to be an actor so he often posts about acting and his dreams on social media. He also posted he was going on a trip to NYC and seeing a broadway show with his mom. This allowed the kidnapper to approach him pretending to be a talent scout (as this show sometimes pulls guests on stage) and asked him to come with her to meet someone and so he went along and only realized too late it was a rouse. The kidnapper literally used info from social media against him.
I tried my best to push on but gave up at 68%
Thanks NetGalley for the ARC of this audiobook. I thought this book was a fun fast thriller. It definitely caught my attention from the start. The ending was amazing and had a great twists.
Laurnor and Jack have done something in their past. They used to live in New York, but whatever they did made them run back to the Uk to raise their children
15 yrs later, their children Alex 18 and Maddie 21 want to revisit New York. They feel like their lives would have been better if they grew up in the states
Laurnor and Jack do not want to return to New York but book the family holiday anyway so that their children will not question the reasons they do not want to return
The family has arrived and the holiday is going great. That is until Alex and Maddie have been taken a d is being held capture.
What did Jack and Laurnor do 15 years ago?
Will their children be saved or suffer for what their parents have done?
Her Husband's Mistake - Daniel Hurst
It should have been the dream trip to New York City, celebrating big birthdays (18th and 21st) for their children.
Lorna and Jack are parents to Maddy and Alex, who spent their childhood years in NYC. The Family haven't been back since, something happened in the past with still fills Lorna with dread.
It's fairly fast, I was quickly sucked in to Lorna's unspecified fears, and the details get filled in. It's a unique premise, at least one that I've not read before.
There were moments of brilliance and some real tension, not a classic but a good, fast entertaining read.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture Audio
Dive into this fast-paced, gripping novel by Daniel Hurst but DO NOT READ THE BOOK’S BLURB. This is a novel that you need to read without knowing too much about the plot. This tense, dark story keeps you on the edge of your seat. You quickly realize that a UK husband and wife have a secret so dark that you cannot wait to find out what the husband did 15 years ago, that causes them both to be afraid of being caught. It is so regrettable, that this couple does not even want to step foot in New York City ever again.
I admit there are a few far-fetched details, and the author does not spend too much time developing each character, but if you enjoy a quickly moving, no time to waste plot, strap into your seat, sit back, and enjoy.
I listened to this book on audiobook. It is easy to follow because each chapter is from a different character’s perspective and each character has a different voice.
I highly recommend this book and will read more by this author. Thank you, Bookouture Audio and NetGalley, for the advanced reader copy. #HerHusbandsMistake #NetGalley
Another great book by Daniel Hurst! This was shorter than his usual books but it was a page turner that I couldn’t put down. The end is shocking and leads me to believe a second book must be coming.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC opportunity!
I will start by saying I’ve read one of Daniel’s books before and I really enjoyed it. This one was a miss for me, but I believe others would like it who are new to his work, and I definitely will read more of his work in the future.
What stood out to me was that most of the plot was given away in the description- which took away from the element of surprise. It’s a good premise but I didn’t find myself shocked.
I personally didn’t connect with the narrators of the audio book, however I’m sure they would entertain many. This is just my particular taste.
I listend to the audiobook version of this book, and was very satisfied with the narrators. They did an excellent job and that made the whole experience more pleasant. I do have to agree with another review I’ve read; that the blurb gives too much away. I felt like after reading it, I almost knew everything that would happen. Other than that, it was a fast-paced read as always, but it wasn’t very memorable or stood out in any way. Just an average thriller that gave me some hours of enjoyment, but not a book I would read again.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the arc in exchange for my honest opinion!
Another great read by Daniel Hurst! In his true writting style Her Husband's Mistake keeps you guessing from page to page. Any fan of Daniel Hurst will devour this addition to his collection. While they never wanted to return to New York due to a prior mishap, causing the family to flee New York and move back to the UK. Years later with their children requesting to head back to New York on a family trip, the family is placed in danger as their previous mistakes are brought back to light.
Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
The thing i love about Daniel hurst is the action is fact paced and revealing. Sadly in this case the blurb gives away virtually the entire plot which left me feeling flat before I started.
This is narrated perfectly. Told from the pov of the main chatacters The action is fast paced. Due to the blurb the only real twist for me was the epilogue . I found this an enjoyable listen with good solid characters . The problem was I knew too much from the burb before i started so there was no anticipation or excitement.. I was left feeling there maybe more to duscover in a later outing.
Sadly thus is only a 4 star listen due to the burb. I would suggest this was rewritten if possible as less is more. The narrators did a fantastic job and i loved all the action and chatacters it just didnt push the button as the burb told me virtually the entire plot. The story itself was a fab idea. I always look forward to the next daniel hurst.
Thank you netgallery publisher author and narrators for this arc. My criticism is purely the burb and how it impacted the story.
First time reading this authors books and might have found a new go to author for to the point, twisty thrillers. There was no fluff which made it an easy read, no complicated second guessing while reading. The lack of fluff made it easy to not care too deeply about the characters. This would be a good short story to read after a heavy novel, transition book.

I um liked that this was short. I wasn't feeling the make narrator but that isn't his issues - it is me. I just do not like listening to men but I knew that when I requested it. I wanted to hear the story!
What would you do if you had to kill your husband to save your children?
That's the issue here. I absolutely know what I would do and my husband knows it too. Hopefully, it keeps him from doing crimes.
It was alight. This was my first Daniel Hurst novel.
