This is an quick, easy, fast paced listen that I listened to throughout the day. Unfortunately the blurb gives far too much away and it felt like I already had the gist of the storyline that left no room for some surprises along the way. Like I said it was an easy listen and I did enjoy it but it was a little predictable for me and not really anything out of the ordinary when it comes to storylines. The different narrators worked really well and they added to the listen. When it came to the characters I can’t say I really felt like I liked or disliked them or if I even really got to know them. I’ve liked other reads by this author but unfortunately this one fell a little short for me.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to listen to and review #HerHusbandsMistake
This is my first book by Daniel Hurst, but it will definitely not be my last! Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC audiobook.
I'm usually not an audiobook person,
but Hurst has a gift of writing for his readers. His prose is easy to listen to and you immediately get swept up into the story. This book in particular had twists early in the story, and an atmosphere of doom hanging over the main characters from the beginning that kept me listening to the very last page.
While some of the plot elements may seem outlandish, I feel that the overall continuity of the storyline really holds the reader's attention.
I definitely recommend this book. If you haven't read Daniel Hurst in the past, you definitely will now.
This was my first Daniel Hurst book. It was okay. Glad it was not too long or it would have been to overdone.
This should be the trip of a lifetime – a week in New York with my family. As we stroll along the Hudson River, drinking coffee in the sunshine, anyone would think we’re the perfect family. But the truth is far more complicated.
I’ve been on edge the whole time because fifteen years ago when we were living in this city my husband Jack did something that ripped our lives apart. I swore I would never come back here, but Jack insisted.
One afternoon, in the blur of a crowd, I lose sight of my son. I can’t find him anywhere. Frantic, I call my husband. But what he tells me next shakes me to the core…
My daughter’s gone missing too.
I end the conversation, my whole body shaking with fear. As I’m desperately searching for my children, the phone rings – it’s an anonymous number.
The hard voice at the other end gives me an ultimatum: kill my husband or my children will die.
The clock is ticking. Can I save my family in time?
Her Husband’s Mistake centres around Jack and Lorna who fled New York with their young children in 2008 after Jake made a huge mistake. In 2023 Maddy and Alex convince their parents to take them back to New York for their birthdays. It soon becomes clear someone in New York has been waiting 15 years for revenge.
I enjoyed the narration and loved that the voices for each of the four characters were very distinct. The narration flowed nicely and moved at a good pace. The plot moved extremely quickly and I found myself being sucked into the story. I liked the cliff hanger at the end.
However I found a lot of the twists very predictable and the characters were way too gullible. A lot of their choices seemed highly illogical based off of their inner dialogue and it became quite frustrating to listen to.
Overall this was a fast paced, action packed thriller however I found it to be quite predictable and not very original.
Rounded up from 3.5
Jack is back in New York 15 years after leaving it with his wife, Lorna, and 2 kids, Maddie and Alex, who are now 18 and 21. Back then, he did something that changed their lives. Now, both of their kids are missing. Now his wife has to kill him to get their children back.
This is a psychological thriller told in multiple POVs (mom, dad, daughter and son). There was way too much foreshadowing in the first few chapters for my taste, and the premise is over the top and veeeeery far-fetched. Jack and Lorna are both super selfish people, and I wouldn't call what Jack did a mistake. Basically, ask yourself: How far will a mother go to protect her family? and you will probably find the answer in here. Did I love it? No. Was it entertaining? Yes. The narrators did a great job in the audio book.
I received an advance review copy of this book for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I do like a dual or multiple narration. It always sits more comfortably with me.
This story is a real rollercoaster that keeps you on your toes right to the surprising ending.
It’s one of those books that has you yelling at the protagonists not to be so trusting and shaking your head at their gullibility. Definitely worth a read
First things first - don't read the blurb!!! It gives nearly everything away!
Go in blind and this is brilliant! Daniel Hurst always throws in a great twist at the end and this book is no exception.
Tension builds as we hear from Lorna, Jack, Alex and Maddie as they head to NYC, where they used to live. We know they left fifteen years ago, in a rush, but we don't know why. Daniel Hurst masterfully drip feeds snippets of the past, via Lorna and Jack, who are both terrified to return to New York and they are right to be, as the couple are asked to make a massive sacrifice, for the sake of their children.
How far will a parent go, in order to keep their children safe? How hard does a loving couple need to pushed to make them turn against each other? A great and well developed cast of characters, brilliantly narrated by Tamsin Kennard and Nathaniel Priestley. I loved the fast pace of this book and listened to it in one sitting - I was gripped!
4 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Daniel Hurst and Bookouture for an ARC in return for an honest review.
Listened to the audio of this book in one sitting and that was due to the narrators who did a brilliant job. Daniels books are easy to get through as the plot is juicy, the chapters are short and it’s not a complex read.
Unlikeable characters, drama filled and fast paced!
2.5 stars
Usually I enjoy Daniel Hurst's books but I really had to struggle with that one! Maybe it was a bit too much?
What I really enjoyed was the pacing of the story about a family with plenty of action going on during their vaccation in the States!
The narration by Tamsin Kennard, Nathaniel Priestley matched the plot perfectly!!!
Thank you #NetGalley #Bookouture Audio for this audiobook
I do love Daniel Hurst and his style of writing! Always quick, easy, entertaining reads! This was no different! The suspense kept going through the story as it progressed, revealing more behind the original “dread” of the trip back to New York. The ending definitely left more to be desired, but it wasn’t disappointing, just felt like a hurried ending after the reveal. I still loved the book and thoroughly enjoyed it!
Her Husband’s Mistake was a pretty good story. I really felt for the mom/wife in this book who had her husband alter her life’s path. The narrator was good.
This was an easy read, about a comfortable family of 4 and a holiday to New York. I was interested in the story right from the start, and wanted to know why they shouldn't go back to New York.
Lots of predictable turns but an event in the end that was unexpected.
The audiobook narration was OK but I didn't care for Lorna's dramatic delivery. Bit OTT. Overall I found it an OK read, 4 stars.
Do I read every Daniel Hurst I can get my hands on? Yes. Absolutely.
Do I love them all? Nope.
Will I continue to read every Hurst book? Yup.
My first criticism is probably to the publishers. Is that who decides the blurb used to entice readers??? Cause this blurb gave away so much of the plot, the surprises were few.
A UK family who previously lived in New York until the husband did a very bad thing and they fled the country with their children. Fast forward to the tykes turning 18 and 21 and asking for a trip to NY. Then the kids go missing. And for more spoilers, just read the description at the book’s Goodreads page.
I didn’t like the characters. I didn’t appreciate the premise knowing what I knew going in. And the traditional Hurst ending is formulaic at this point.
Formulaic has become the norm, unfortunately, for the many authors who write short books quickly.
The narration for the audio was on point and kept me listening.
“The sins of the father are to be laid upon the children.” ― William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice
I am sure that is what the children in the this book feel as well as the wife. The father did something years ago and covered it up. His wife knew about it but never turned him in. Well all these years later someone's come back to make things right. This book starts with the family going to NYC to celebrate their kids birthday's despite the parents not wanting to go back. Once they arrive all sorts of weird things start happening and then both kids disappear despite being on outings separately with one of the parents. Where did they go? Are they together? Did they know the people they were seen walking out with?
We find out what the father did or didn't do and go on one heck of a race against time and it's laid out how he will be paying for what he did all those years ago. Yikes! As it all unfolds you will be surprised.
Very quick read by one of my fav authors! Although I guessed some of the twists, I still found the story interesting enough to listen to! The narration was good! I’ll always read what this author writes!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Fast-paced, gripping and intriguing thriller!
A terrible mistake torn the family apart…
Jack, his wife Lorna and their kids Maddie and Alex were used to live to NYC for some time. They left NYC years ago in a rush because of a terrible mistake made by Jack. Now they were back to the UK and Maddie wanted to spend her birthday in NYC.
Maddie confused why her mother Lorna did not allow her to post anything about her NYC trip on her social media. She for sure ignored her and now they were in danger…
I enjoyed Daniel’s writing style and his story plot. Always surprising and never dragging. I was hooked at the beginning of the story. It’s an enjoyable 5 hours audiobook! I could not see the ending coming like this. Great twist!
What would you do to protect your spouse or better yet your whole family… especially your children?
This is a fast paced thriller set when a family leaves the UK for a holiday celebration in New York for their children’s birthdays. Seems to be like the perfect getaway but New York holds secrets and dangers that mom and dad would never want their kids to be aware of.
But what could happen on a quick trip from their haunting life in New York from 15 years earlier?
This audiobook kept me engaged and listening every chance that I had. The narration fit the accents to the characters perfectly, though at times the man’s voice gave me the ick when he was being dramatic.
I never expected the outcome nor could I have ever predicted what was going to be the end.
If you like audiobooks and fast paced thrillers, this is one for you especially with the unpredictable ending.
Thank you Daniel Hurst for a truly shocking story. I can not wait to see if this one will continue.
Also, thanks to netgalley, the publisher, the narrators and everyone who made this audiobook happen. I received this audio version of this book in exchange for my honest review. Preorder today! Releasing on 9/30/23!
A U.K. couple's children go missing in NYC in one afternoon at different venues.
Is this a coincidence or a targeted abduction?
Exactly how far would a father go to save the lives of his children?
Would he agree to sacrifice his own life for a mistake made 15 years ago?
Although I enjoyed the book's compelling premise, pacing, and twisty epilogue, overall, the book lacked the sizzle of Daniel Hurst's earlier revenge thrillers.
I listened to the audiobook read by Tamsin Kennard and Nathaniel Priestley.
Full-cast audiobooks are always appreciated and both narrators did a superb job with the narration.
Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I am a huge Daniel Hurst fan and will always be looking forward to listening to his future releases.
I have read a few books by Daniel Hurst and I love his short thrillers with twists and turns around every corner. Her Husband's Mistake was a great thriller but it lacked the twist I have become so used to from Daniel Hurst.
Jack and Lorna used to live in New York but something happened that made them leave and go back home to London. Years later their adult children want a trip to New York for their birthday and Jack and Lorna reluctantly take them. Both kids get taken as Jack and Lorna's past mistakes in New York catch up to them. Lorna is given a choice, she must kill her husband to save her children.
My biggest problem with this book was just that I was expecting more. The book delivers on exactly that premise. Too much was given away and there were not enough unknowns as we got deeper into the story. For example, the summary tells you the kids will be taken, but I don’t think that happened until after the halfway point.
As with all of Hurst's books, this one is extremely well written. This may not be my favorite by the author but it's still a quick and fun thriller.
British couple, Lorna and Jack, are taking their kids on a vacation to New York City. However, having previously lived in NYC many years ago, they had left behind a horrible secret, and were fearful of returning.
On the first day of vacation, the two kids, Mandy and Alex, disappear, and both Jack and Lorna know exactly who is responsible. How will they rescue their children , without revealing their secret of 15 years ago?
This was a good book, and I enjoyed the detailed descriptions of NYC, a city I know well!
Although quite far fetched, the story progressed smoothly, with a big twisty ending!
This was an audio book, and the narrators were good, except for their attempts at a NY accent!!
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for the ARC edition, in return for my honest review.
