As a mixed race person, this novel hit so many points on the head of things i expereneice and I am so grateful for this rep. Over all, thought it was a strong story with nuance and complex issues weaved throughout
"Something Like Right" by H. D. Hunter is a raw and honest exploration of youth, resilience, and first love. I really enjoyed the unique format of this book as it is structured like a study guide into the main character’s life, making it an engaging and fresh read. The romance felt real, and I admired the protagonist’s ability to pull himself together in tough situations.
The diverse representation and the way the story tackles life's struggles without sensationalizing them really stood out. That said, while the book's voice was soothing and immersive, I struggled to connect with the writing and characters as much as I'd hoped. This story was full of emotional depth and the unique style of it made it a different and easy read.
I really enjoyed this story! A beautiful coming of age story about Zay who always has good intentions, but sometimes those good intentions put him in complicated situations. I really loved seeing Zay grow to learn more about himself, befriend people that he wouldn’t expect, and even experience his first love as a kid. Even with his first love with Feven, he learns that sometimes even that may not go our way. Going into an environment that he was enthusiastic about really allowed him to become a flourishing young man and figure out what he wants to do in life. I loved that he was able to also come to an understanding with his parents in the end. It seemed like they were young and naive, especially his mom. Even though what she did in the past was absolutely wrong, I’m happy her and Keith could reconcile. I think no matter what they did Zay would have been able to come to terms with the dynamics and understand them. Overall I really enjoyed this book!
This was such a beautiful story of family, first love and second chances. The characters were flawed, but the growth they all experienced was written so well, Zay especially. I absolutely loved seeing him navigate his complicated feelings towards his parents and also towards Feven. I really enjoyed seeing his relationships with his Aunt Melissa and Smith grow and they had some incredibly powerful moments together. This book was so easy to fall into and you can’t help but root for Zay and his family to find their way back to each other. I really loved the themes of understanding, forgiveness and redemption in this story. I highly recommend this one if you’re looking for a good second chance story.

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group for an advanced reader’s copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is not a typical read for me but I fell in love with it. I loved all the characters and how the romance while sweet was super realistic. I also loved how the mc pulled himself together in a tough situation. The representation of different races ans ethnicities was wonderful as well. A must read.
This is a raw look at life when things just won't go your way. The story is gripping and sometimes hard to read as all the characters struggle through circumstances - sometimes not of their making. The resiliency and hope that the characters inspire is very moving and makes for a great read.
The author didn't shy away from ugliness but also didn't make things upsetting just to get a reaction from the reader. It was honest and thought provoking. The writers voice was so soothing to read it was a hard book to put down.
Enjoy!
"Something Like Right" by H. D. Hunter is a compelling exploration of youth and first love, captured with remarkable depth and authenticity. The characters are solid and relatable, with the story uniquely told from a male perspective, which adds a refreshing dimension. It beautifully portrays the common yet profound journey of a good kid who loses his way but finds his path again. The narrative is rich with the emotions of crushes, love, and the rollercoaster of feelings that accompany adolescence. This book is a heartfelt testament to the trials and triumphs of growing up.
I feel like I keep searching through so many anticipated releases, waiting for something that will break the reading slump. Unfortunately, this one just wasn't the one to do it. I just felt bored.
I tried to start this one several times, and the third time I managed to read about 30%. But I didn't connect to the writing and Xavier (Zav) as much as I wanted to and instead of plodding along and giving a low rating, I decided to not finish the story. I'm sorry, and I hope other readers will enjoy Something Like Right more than I did.
