I’ve just found my September favourite, maybe even my fall favourite! Dare I say my years favourite?! It’s the epic horror cosmic fantasy I didn’t know I needed.

First of all, I haven’t had a book hangover like this for ages. The last book that had me in this kind of frenzy was American Gods by Neil Gaiman. This book is living rent free in my head right now and I’m having difficulty moving on! It’s also book 1 of a series and all I can think about is how this story will go on.

The characters are primo! I mean ridiculously cool. Our mc Julie Crews is a total badass and the baddies are literally out of this world. This cosmic world is hypnotic and I seriously didn’t want this book to end.

The narrator slayed this. How she pulled off all of these outrageous characters is bonkers to me.

Gawd, I love this book!

Well this wasn't bad. It was a little heavy on the urban fantasy side, which I am not really the target audience for. I guess I should have read the synopsis...duh. But I saw Cassandra Khaw and Richard Kadrey and panic requested. Turns out, I enjoyed it more than I thought. It was fast and entertaining with plenty of comic relief and the appropriate amounts of blood. There was perhaps too much going on at times but it evened out in the end.

The blood and guts starts right off the bat and carries through this entertaining demon hunter adventure. Love the dynamic of the jerk ex and the potential new love. The Jessica Jones comparison is spot on. Just a fantasticly fun and horrifying story!

This is easily my favorite Cassandra Khaw book (it’s my first by Richard Kadrey.) Bonus- Natalie is also one of my favorite narrators. I’m looking forward to the next Carrion City book

Overall I thought this book was a good time and it's one I'm going to pick up again but read it physically. There was just so much going on that I don't think this one is great in audiobook format only. A tandem read would be perfect;

This book definitely is gross but can I say in a fun and sometimes hilarious way, the dialogue is great and there is a lot of humor in it. The first 15% I was captured but then it started to fall apart and got really hard for me to follow,

I absolutely love Natalie Naudus as a narrator there is just something about her narrating that I find soothing and captivating. I don't think my issues with this audiobook is really a reflection on her delivery.

I struggled a lot this book understanding what and which character we were following, I would all the sudden realize we weren't with Julie's character anymore. I also don't think I could explain what this book is about.

Again I do plan on picking this one up physically and giving it another try. Because I did really love Julie's character and her dialogue. I think it had great potential for an interesting series.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for this advanced audiobook my review is voluntarily my own.

Once I reread the physical copy I'll decide then if I'll post to my bookstagram page The.Floofs.Booknook.

What a fun and wildly unique book! This was a surprisingly gory but cute story. The plot was a little all over the place but I think it really worked for this. It reminded me very much of Lovecraft. And with so much going on there was so much intrigue to keep me utterly invested. The characters were all so interesting and very well developed. I loved the writing style of this one. The detailed imagery really helped me picture the gory and grotesque aspects of the world, especially the creatures. I think the authors did a wonderful job with one and I can't wait to read the sequel.

Thank you to Macmillan Audio and Netgalley for this alc in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for the chance to listen to an early version of this book in exchange for an honest review. The Dead Take The A Train by Cassandra Khaw and Richard Kadrey will be released on October 3rd, 2023.

If someone were to ask me to explain the plot of this book, I wouldn't know what to say. Not in a bad way - I was entertained throughout the audiobook - but in a way that I don't think my words will fully capture everything going on in this book. I'm still trying to wrap my head around it if I'm being honest.

It's part sci-fi, part horror, part humor, part romance. It's graphic and gory but will also have you laughing out loud at times. Julie is a great main character and the narrator did an excellent job of portraying her. The rating for this book was hard for me to decide on because the book isn't bad. It's well-written and entertaining with a unique plot. But I just don't think it was for me. I'm giving it a 3.5 rounded down because I can't justify a 4 star review.

Who knew the deadened underworld would be just like the hustle and bustle of corporate NYC on a deadline?? Because when it comes to career success, Julie Crews ain't hitting her marks and puts all her eggs in the "phone a friend" basket or in this case, a guardian angel basket, and finds herself in deeper shit than she ever imagined, releasing a vengeful demonic being hell-bent on ending the world as we know it... Sound like something you're into???

With the combined powers of Richard Kadrey and Cassandra Khaw, readers get a mashup of sapphic horror and otherworldly fantasy-crime hunting that will leave you both frazzled and horny.

I am so thankful to both lovely authors, Macmillan Audio, Netgalley, and Tor Nightfire for granting me physical, digital, and audio access to this steam-punk twisty thrill before it hits shelves on October 3, 2023.
