Paige Toon is cementing herself as the go-to for tearjerking, heartbreaking-yet-heartwarming romances!
Seven Summers follows Liv and Finn who meet one summer and quickly fall for each other. A family tragedy strikes and while Liv has to stay in Cornwall, Finn's life is in the US. He makes her a promise to visit her in the summer and if they are both single, they would see where it went. On the 7th summer, Tom enters the picture and throws a little monkey wrench in their summer romance. Who will Liv choose? Is it time to let Finn go? Or will their long enduring romance overcome?
Beautiful story of young love that blossoms through years, tragedy and distance. Many thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
What if you could only get a few days or weeks every summer with the one you love? Would it be enough? That’s the question in Paige Toon’s “Seven Summers”. A book that tugs at the heartstrings, it’s a charming story about love amongst personal and physical obstacles.
First, the good parts of this story. It was easy to cheer for Liv and Finn. Both are genuinely good characters and their attraction is both cute and palpable in the early parts of this book. I wanted these two to get together, and wanted them to get back together each summer, eventually to find a way to make it work. Their issues were legitimate and so it was easy to see their relationship go either way (thus making me want read further to find out what happens). Tom is also really likable, so when he enters the picture, it was hard as a reader to decide what ending I wanted. Those are some of the best stories, because at the end of the day, romance wins out.
There were a few places where this book fell short for me. I thought Tom was an important character in moving Liv’s story along, but Toon did him dirty with the ending she gave him. When it comes to who ends up with whom, Toon wanted to have her cake and eat it too, and those endings don’t usually sit right with me. Also along those lines, I think the ending is rushed and a little sloppy, especially when it comes to Tom. There were easily other parts of the book that could have been scaled back to give the end more justice.
Speaking of, there are summers that are drawn out too much for no reason. The opportunity for character development is put to the side in favor of playing up the pain and trauma aspects of the story, and it became lackluster. At the same time, the sweetness that initially drew Finn and Liv together wasn’t highlighted so somewhere in the middle, I even questioned why they were still so enchanted with each other.
At the end of the day, I read this book in one day because I wanted to see how Liv’s life ended up, and that is a successful story in my book. While there are parts I wish were more developed, there was more I liked about this book than I disliked. Anyone who likes angst ridden, emotional romances, this book would be a good one for you. 3.5 stars/5.

Liv and Finn meet one summer in the UK and have an amazing summer romance, knowing that Finn must return to the US after a few weeks. Tragedy strikes, deeply bonding the two. Liv must stay in the UK for family reasons, and Finn must return to the US for his music career. Can they make it work long-term while only seeing each other a few weeks a year when Finn comes to visit?
In the seventh summer, Liv meets Tom, a mysterious visitor. The two hit it off. How can Liv choose between Finn and Tom? Maybe it’s time for Liv to leave Finn behind and move on? After all, it seems that’s what Finn has done.
The epilogue….. has a lot of punch to it. In a way, the book felt like a prologue and the epilogue felt like the book? I swooned. I teared up. I weeped. I smiled. The rollercoaster that my heart felt…. I am still recovering ❤️🩹
The emotional impact I feel compels me to say 5 ⭐️! What a painful but beautiful story.
I am a sucker for a beach story! Paige Toon delivers this story with its compelling characters and vivid scenery and transports the reader into the lives of each character.
Is it possible to feel like my hear has taken a beating while warm and fuzzy at the same time? Because that’s how I’m feeling right now. This book was an absolute roller coaster of emotions. It shattered my expectations beyond words.
Though there was a love triangle aspect in this book which I am not usually a big fan of, I found my self completely invested.
This book revolves around Liv, Finn and Tom. Six summers of falling in love and one summer that changes everything. Let me tell you, I never expected to have my heart so invested in two MMCs but I did. I feel in love with Finn and I thought I knew what to expect and then in came Tom. I was absolutely head-over-heels for them both.
My only gripe is how rushed the epilogue felt, other than that, this is a beautiful story with really high-high and very low-lows, showing sides of characters rarely seen. I cried and absolutely loved this.
I am so happy I was chosen by Netgalley to read this. I originally requested it bc the cover was pretty and Ive read one of Paige Toon‘s previous books and enjoyed it! It could very well be my fav book of 2024! I will be rereading it because I can't leave behind Liv, Finn, and Tom 💕
I was immediately hooked by the relationship building between Finn and Liv. They were so sweet together yet there was so much heartache happening between the two of them. We see them progress through seven summers together and apart and while they are feeling so many emotions… you as the reader start to as well. I was sad and maybe and a little upset with Finn. You want them to be together. Then in walks this beautiful stranger, Tom. And while Liv in the book has to decide which direction her heart should take... you find yourself having a hard time deciding between Finn and Tom as well.
This was my first Paige Toon book. I literally cried when it was finished after I stayed up for hours reading it last night. I was sucked right in and I absolutely loved this book. It was so well written. I felt every feeling. I’m off to read more Paige Toon books!!
This book was ok for me. I feel like it was really slow and it took me a long time to get into the book. I felt like the book drug on. The main character was going back and forth between two love interests and I just felt it was hard to get through. I wasn't motivated to read it, I just wanted her to pick someone and be done.
This book gave me all of the feels. I sobbed and smiled. My heart may honestly never recover from this
Wow...I'm not quite sure what else to say about this book. It's a very well written, somewhat star-crossed lovers story that will hit you with ALL the feels. The story deals with loss so if that's not something you want to read about then you should avoid this book. But if you want to read about the journey through grief and growing through that then this is a good book for you. Overall, a 4.5 or 4.75 stars for me but I'm VERY stingy on what I give 5 stars to. I can't wait to read her other books on my TBR!
This story is incredibly beautiful. As I sit here with tears trailing down my cheeks, I am in awe of Paige Toon’s stunning writing of this absolutely beautiful story.
I read this story with my heart in my throat, my body thrumming with anticipation, and the need to know how this was going to play out. My heart broke and was patched back together… more than once.
This story is filled with emotions. The characters are real and relatable, and you feel as if you are with Liv along her journey. Such incredible story telling felt from deep within. You feel everything and so much. It’s heartbreaking and breathtaking. It’s seven summers of a roller coaster of emotions. It’s a journey of grief and loss, finding oneself, and everlasting love. How lucky to find such beautiful love twice. It’s a story that will stay with you long after you read it. Simply breathtaking.
This book emotionally gutted me and then made me whole again. I hardly ever cry over a book but this one brought me to tears.
The story has a lot of grief and Paige did an amazing job bringing out the empathy in me without the book feeling like a tragedy. I totally went on a journey between Finn and Tom, ultimately rooting for Liv experiencing happiness in her own life before accepting either of them.
The ending shook me and I’m still processing how I feel about it. It isn’t often a romance novel sticks in my head like this which goes to show how much I loved this one.
This book broke my heart, repaired it, then shattered it, then patched it back together. I love the “multiple summers” style, it’s one of my favorites, and these characters will stay with me for a long time.
This one was a pretty wild ride, with an every range of emotion. I couldn't put it down and ended up binging it in a day.
OMG this book is giving SWEAR ON THIS LIFE (by Renee Carlino) meets EVERY SUMMER AFTER (by Carley Fortune). This was so good! It’s one heck of a roller-coaster ride of emotions. This was just brilliant! Especially the last 20% of the book. If you find yourself at a standstill in some chapters, just push through. The ending is very much worth it!!!!!
This book was not for me, I thought it was going to be a story about how shared trauma can bond you together, but sometimes those relationships aren't healthy and you need to move on. But that's not what we get. And the epilogue of this book was devastating for no reason.
Liv and Finn meet, have sex, and then Liv suffers a family tragedy. Seriously. One right after the other. This books pace almost gave me whiplash. We then follow Liv and Fin over 7 years of summer and how they carve space together to deal with their mutual grief. Finn is a musician that grew up with Liv, but now lives in LA. Honestly the first summer we get the most character development for both of them, but everything is pretty much stalled over the next 7 YEARS.
I felt like there was no character development at all except for Liv. But even with Liv we rarely see her improve her relationships with anyone. She grows throughout the story and accomplishes goals, but by the end of the book she's still a bland character. I did like her relationship with her older brother Michael who has down syndrome. I thought that depiction was well done and respectful.
Everything the author sets up is completely undone by her epilogue. This could have been a beautiful story, but just fell flat for me.
Thanks to NetGalley and G. P Putnam's Sons for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I really enjoyed this book its such a cute summer read.
This is the second Paige Toon ARC I’ve received & the second I’ve spent crying my eyes out. I love the lead up to the let down, which is always a much appreciated gut punch. If I’m ever in need of a book to help me cry, she is the author I turn to. Stunning writing, the master at provoking emotions, just incredible. I miss this story already.
Thank you, GP Putnam's Sons and NetGalley, for the advanced copy of Seven Summers.
Paige Toon always delivers a book that will pull at your heartstrings. Seven Summers is no different. Toon always develops relatable characters. Part of the charm of the characters is that they are real with personal issues and life experiences that have shaped them into people that you know or have known. Along with the character development, Toon has created a setting that is easily imagined while reading. Just like her other novels, it was very easy to immerse myself into the world of Liv, Finn, and Tom.
Six summers to fall in love. One summer to change everything.
One night at a bar, Liv met Finn while he was performing as the frontman of a local cover band. Finn was only filling in for the regular lead singer while he was in Cornwall visiting family. You see, he usually resides in LA where he is an aspiring rocker. During that Summer, Liv's world is rocked with devastation. Finn stays a little longer to help her through, but their Summer fling must come to an end when he must go back to LA. He leaves with a promise of returning next summer and a semi-commitment that if they're both single next summer they will spend the time together. How long can they truly sustain this quasi relationship before someone's heart gets broken?
Thank you @netgalley and @putnambooks for the eARC of Seven Summers by @paigetoonauthor in exchange for an honest review!
📖📖 Book Review 📖📖 It’s funny how time can move yet seem to stand still at the same time. Olivia met Finn by the seaside six years ago, she’s an artist and he’s a musician and immediately the sparks fly! However, Seven Summers is not a quick and easy love story by any means, it is a heartfelt journey through the triumphs and turmoil of youth. When tragedy strikes Olivia’s life that first summer, her life is changed in an instant. Paige Toon creates an absolutely remarkable account of Olivia’s transition from a carefree spirit to a full blown adult with responsibilities. The writing is so beautiful and captivating, forming a unique and indescribable connection with the characters. While Finn returns home every summer, the connection and care remains steadfast but their lives inevitably grow in their own direction as they get older. And on the seventh summer, Olivia meets Tom and her whole world is turned upside down again. Seven Summers is one of those special coming of age novels that will surely leave a lasting imprint on your heart.
