Another Paige Toon winner! Paige really knows how to tug at your heartstrings.
If you’re looking for a light and easy summer read, this isn’t it. But if you’re looking for an engaging, raw, and emotional story that really digs into the human need for love and connection, pick this book up.
I loved the timeline structure here and had no problem staying engaged. My only qualm was that it was a bit of a slow burn and I felt some of it could have been edited down (mostly details and such) to keep the narrative moving a bit more in the first half, but the second half really did me in and made me so, so emotional.
I love Paige Toon’s books and can’t wait to see what she writes next!
This book just blew me away! It’s a heartbreaking yet beautiful story with very special characters that will stay with you forever! Liv and Michael, Finn and Tom – characters who are dealing with real life dilemmas, pain and grief. It’s a reminder to live life to the fullest, love large and know there is always a rainbow at the end of the darkest of storms.
Liv and Finn meet six summers ago when Liv is living a carefree life with a whole life of opportunities ahead of her. A devastating turn of events forms a bond between the two, however with their lives on separate continents, its untenable at most. Regardless, Finn promises to return every year and if the are still single, they will spend that time together. But each time Finn leaves, Liv’s heart is broken again. When a newcomer comes to town, is it time for Liv to move on?
While this wasn’t a typical light read, it makes for the perfect summer beach read! You will feel all the emotions with this love story. Yes, there are tears and heart dropping moments, but there is also laughter and warmth and joy! I highly recommend!
4.25 stars. Paige Toon is the queen of stomping on your heart, making your heart sing, wrecking it all over again, and then squeezing your heart with love.
I have to admit I don’t particularly like being emotionally turned out and upside down by a novel. But knowing that you will close the book and everything will be ok, makes me a massive Paige Toon fan.
I went into Seven Summers not knowing anything about the plot, but I knew it would be a perfect book to kick off summer reading and that in the author’s expert hands, I would be assured a great story.
I would recommend this approach! It was an experience to move through the twists and turns in this story, unaware. I love the setting in Cornwall, UK, and the characters were interesting and fleshed out well. The main character is Liv, a twenty-something woman who has an older brother, Michael, and parents who are doctors. The story moves back and forth between then and now timelines, with the past summer timelines changing from year to year which kept a great pace.
There is a thorough epilogue also, so if you like satisfying closure to an emotional contemporary romance, you will be pleased. There is art and music peppered into this book which is fun, along with a playlist at the end from the author.
I liked having the e-arc in my hands to keep track of the timelines and know exactly where we were in the story.
Thank you to Penguin Group Putnam and Netgalley for the e-arc in exchange for my honest opinion.
A love story that will tug on your heart strings! It is both heartwarming and devastating all at once. With multiple timelines and likable but flawed characters, you'll be reading this one rooting for them and their HEA. Seven Summers will take you on one hell of an emotional rollercoaster that will leave me thinking about these characters and this story for a while.
Seven Summers is an emotional rollercoaster ride that gives you all the feels! Let me start off by saying, if you are looking for an easy, funny, rom com, this is not it. This has a lot of depth and harder situations woven into it. The storyline followed Finn and Liv back and forth through the current summer and past summers unraveling their complicated relationship. They are both very likable characters, and I was cheering for them to get a happy ever after from the beginning to the end. I loved the epilogue so much; it was a bit shorter than I would have liked but it left me with a smile on my face! This is the first book I've read by Paige Toon, and I will be keeping her on my radar from here on out.
Thank you, Net Galley, and Penguin Group Putnam for a copy in return for my honest review.
This is my new ✨fav✨ book of the year🩷
It wasn’t a light, fluffy read, and it was perfect in every single way. I don’t even want to give it a star rating because it was so much more than that. It’s a MUST read.
It was an emotional journey. I stayed up until 3 am reading it and then finished it the next day. When it was over, I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t want to pick up another book ever again. It could not have ended more perfectly. If you are someone that skips the epilogue… do not skip it. It’s long, and it’s worth it.
There’s romance (fade to black), grief/loss, flawed and loveable characters, love for music, disability representation, and so much more.
My heart was broken over and over. You will feel every single emotion while reading this book, and I cannot recommend it enough. It would be a great book club pick. Let’s hype up this book!!
BRB, reading every book that Paige Toon ever wrote. New auto-buy author for me!

Thank you to NetGalley and G.P. Putnam’s Sons for an advanced reader copy. All opinions are my own.
This novel is an emotional roller coaster that will leave you breathless. It is a tale of love, grief, and healing.
Many thanks to PENGUIN GROUP Putnam and to Netgalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
This book was a roller coaster of emotions for me. It reminded me alot of Same Time Next Year, but with a twist. Finn and Liv's romance was definitely filled with angst and settled into a routine of longing for one another that got a bit tiresome after awhile, but boy when Tom came into the picture, the story definitely took a strong emotional turn. This story ripped my heart out, and there were some tear filled parts that really brought this book together for me. This is a new author for me, and I ended up loving this book. When an author can put the reader through an array of emotions, that's a successful book in my eyes. Although the ending was emotional, it was perfect. Definitely worth the read.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC copy of this book.
Goodness this book was DEVASTATING. Just tear my heart out 😭 I cried so hard, especially towards the end. This was a really good read though and I loved that it spanned over so many years so that you could see the growth of the characters.
The narrator, Natalie Simpson, I think played a large role in the emotions I felt. Really sealed in that anguish. If you’ve ever seen Love, Rosie and loved that there were these two who were clearly meant for each other and it was just the wrong time for years—- they dated other people, etc— then you’ll like this one. I think our main couple both had some growing up and moving on to do before they were good for each other. But their love never wavered and that’s kind of beautiful. It also showed that there’s different kinds of love. The one who got away…the first love… the forever love…the pure love. Excuse me while I go cry and watch something happy now.
Thank you NetGalley and also PRH Audio!
Wow, this one absolutely wrecked me! I spent the entire epilogue sobbing and loved how meaningful the title proved to be. I’m a huge fan of jumping timelines but it is easy to mess up, happy to report that Toon nailed it. I was hesitant knowing there was a bit of a love triangle, since it’s not my favorite, but Toon nailed this as well! Absolutely recommend to fans of books about grief, friends to lovers, love triangles, and right person wrong time. Read this book!!
I loved this book. I was pulled in at the very first chapter to this absolutely heart-wrenchingly beautiful story. Reading it was an absolute emotional rollercoaster, and it was so hard to put down! Going to be recommending this book a lot this summer!
There is just some bring about Paige Toon’s writing that sucks me in. She makes me care for her characters so much. They have great depth and seem to go through journeys that read just like real life experiences. I knew early on this was gonna hurt, I just wasn’t sure how. And hurt me she did. I felt conflicting feelings reading this one. I kept changing my mind on what I wanted to happen. The journey she takes us on felt so real and filled with so much love and heartbreak. I really liked the idea of spreading the story across the summers, it felt familiar but I liked what Toon did with it. This story was beautiful and well written and makes me realize I need to read more of her books!
Thank you NetGalley and to the publisher for the gifted earc
Only Love Can Hurt Like This ★★★★☆
Seven Summers by Paige Toon is a contemporary romance novel that will definitely pull at the heartstrings over and over again. The story in Seven Summers is just as the title suggests one that takes place over years of time going back to the summers the characters spent with one another.
Just after school Liv had her life planned out that she would spend that summer earning money so she could then leave Cornwall and follow her life’s dream of becoming a sculptor. Liv met Finn that summer and the two were immediately drawn to one another but destined to take different paths with Finn heading to L.A. to become a musician.
Tragedy hits Liv before she can follow her dreams and from that moment she knows her life needs to be in Cornwall with her family. Finn is still set to leave so the two make a pact that each year Finn will visit and if they are both still single they will spend their summer together but if either moves on in between then it will be over between them.
Seven Summers is the first book I’ve read by author Paige Toon and I will admit I almost passed this one by and that would have been a terrible choice. Thankfully something stood out about this one and I went ahead and picked it up and boy what a emotional rollercoaster ride it was until the very end. I enjoyed not only the main characters but those around them and as the years went by I couldn’t read fast enough to know how it would all come around in the end. Definitely one I’d recommend checking out and another author to come back to someday for me.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
“I think about the road stretched out before me…and I realize something. Love is not enough.”
3.5 stars rounded up! This is a very emotional and super sweet story of healing after loss, how complicated love can be, and what it means to truly follow your heart.
The narrator did a fantastic job of capturing both the love and the angst within these characters. She also has a beautiful accent that is so soothing to listen to!
Although not a light summer romance, this book would be a fabulous beachy read that will grip you and, possibly, have you shedding real tears.
Thanks for the free #audiobook @PRHAudio #PRHAudioPartner and to Netgalley, Putnam Books, and the author for the ARC.
This is not a rom com. I always feel like i have to get that out of the way when reviewing one of Paige Toon's books
Six summers ago, Liv and Finn meet while she's working at a bar on the Cornish coastline and he was a fill-in singer for the band. Tragedy occurs and they are bound together thought it. But Finn's life is in LA and Liv's is in Cornwall. But they agree that every summer that he returns home, if they are single..they will be together. Just for the summer.
So for six summers the cycle continues, - Finn returning home, the two rekindling their relationship , and Finn inevitably breaking Liv's heart when he decides to leave again. I hated that Liv basically put her life on hold every year, hoping that one year Finn will decide to stay. She denies every guy that comes along until Tom .
This book was a rollercoaster with every single chapter. And when it went the way I thought I wanted, I couldn't help thinking in my head..but what if. I will say the many many MANY epilogues...while I can see how they were necessary and they bought the whole story full circle...
I wish it could have been done another way? But I was of course devastated but on the other hand like..how else could it have ended?
Im so sorry for the vagueness, but If i say anything it gives away the story.
My rating for this is a firm 3.75 rounded up to 4 for Goodreads.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own,
Liv and Finn met while working at a Cornish bar. Despite living in different places (Finn in LA and Liv in Cornwall), they promised to reunite every summer if they were both single. However, this summer, Liv meets Tom, a mysterious newcomer, and they start falling for each other. For the first time, Liv envisions a life without the heartbreak of Finn's annual departure. As she learns about Tom's past, she faces an impossible choice. The story unfolds with Liv navigating her emotions, grief, and ultimately finding a new path to happiness. This heartfelt tale of love, loss, and new beginnings is a beautifully written emotional journey.
4.75⭐️ rounded up. This book kinda surprised me with how much I enjoyed it! It was a lot heavier of a hitter than I expected on the emotional front. I didn't very much like Finn and was rooting for Tom all the way (me not rooting for the rock star?? Who am I?) I think this woulda been a 5⭐️ but I found the time jumping a little disjointed.
I really enjoyed the novel, Seven Summers by Paige Toon. The character development of Liv, Finn, and Tom was exceptional. This story really tugged at my heartstrings, loving and hating the situations the characters find themselves in and the development of the relationships with each other over the course of many years. I also appreciated the multiple transitions from current time to the past. I think it helped to tell the story and made the reader pause as if looking back at a point in time. Overall, I really liked this book a lot.
Wow, wow, wow!
This book exceeded all my expectations and more. It’s a stunning love story that completely tore me apart. I was immersed in the grief and love that flowed from every page. this was an emotional rollercoaster and It’s hard to put into words just how deeply this book affected me. I feel both heartbroken and fulfilled at the same time.
Once I started reading, I couldn’t stop. I love when a book tears your heart out, stomps on it, and then carefully puts it back together again. The dual timeline, the pacing, the characters, the setting, the writing—everything was just so beautifully done.
This was my first book by this author, but it definitely won’t be my last. I plan on reading every single one of her books now.
Besties, I’m begging you—please read this book! ❤️🩹😭

To have my heart broken so many years in a row would have devastated me. If the circumstances that Liv found herself in was not as it was, the constant push and pull between her and Finn would have been more devastating. She lost her parents that first year Finn left, so Liv was in a constant state of mourning every year thereafter. They were in limbo connected by that loss. They both experienced loss, which made them grow up a little faster. And then Liv meets Tom the 7th summer. She loves them both but for different reasons. Not any less or more. They both get the closure they need and the happily ever after they deserve. But all those epilogues.... after a while I got the pattern, but it felt a little rushed. Nonetheless, the story is a true love story that was realistic and relatable. I look forward to more from the author.
I received an advance copy of this book at my request and voluntarily left this review.
