I'd like to thank the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.
Unfamiliar Vol. 2 by Haley Newsome takes readers back to the whimsical world of Planchette, the witch who’s still figuring out the whole "witchcraft" thing. If you're here for high-stakes drama, look elsewhere—this is more about supernatural shenanigans and quirky misadventures. Newsome’s art is as charming as ever, with vibrant, playful illustrations that make even the spookiest ghost feel like a fun sleepover guest.
The story? It’s as cozy as curling up with a cup of tea... brewed by a witch who may or may not know what she’s doing. The plot meanders like Planchette herself, but the adorable characters and their budding friendships keep you hooked. Sure, it doesn’t exactly ramp up the tension, but who needs that when you’ve got magical hijinks, a dash of mystery, and a cat with a questionable attitude?
If you loved the first volume, you'll enjoy this second helping of feel-good, low-stakes witchery. I'd give it a solid 7/10 for its irresistible charm and character-driven fun.
This was so cute.
I love the art style and the color palatte.
The characters are very loveable and just want to find a place to fit in.
Every time I close a volume of this GN series, I want to have the next one in my hands ASAP.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for granting me free access to the advanced digital copy of this book.
This was a fun graphic novel to read. There was more of a mystery element in this book with some new characters introduced to complicate the adventures. I liked the art a lot and it was a fast moving plot. I’m looking forward to reading more in this series!
Thank you to Netgalley Edelweiss and Andrew McMeel Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this graphic novel. I continue to find this story adorable and sweet with some mystery thrown in for good measure. I think this time though, it felt a bit choppy when it came to plot. Because of these points, I have to give this a 4 out of 5 stars.
I want to thank NetGalley, Publishers Andrews McMeel Publishing, and the author Haley Newsome for providing this e-ARC. Witch, I will be giving my honest and sincere review.
Has usual the illustrations are amazing, and the plot of this volume is really good.
We follow 4 main characters Planchette, Pinyon, Babs and Sun. Each is very different but unique.
They go on adventures to help friends. Sun has had a curse for years that mysteriously disappears after helping Babs with her modelling career, this is going to make them closer due to the king of fairies, not knowing his place ^^.
Panchete has a new ghost visit and with her friends decides to grant the ghost a wish so she can go in peace.
there's more to the plot I'm being very vague to not spoil the fun.
this was usually a very fun time, reading the story of these 4 friends.
I recommend vividly buying this, I have the first volume and I will acquire the second soon hopefully.
I love this series and cannot wait for Vol. 3! Unfamiliar Vol. 2 takes us on another thrilling journey into the supernatural world, and it does not disappoint. This installment continues to build upon the foundation laid in the first volume, delving deeper into the lives and motivations of our beloved characters. Unfamiliar Vol. 2 remains a captivating read. The world-building continues to be a strong point, and the author's ability to draw readers into the supernatural realm is commendable. The character-driven narrative keeps us invested in the story, and we can't help but eagerly anticipate the next installment.
This book wasn't for me. The illustrations, the dynamics, and the relationships aren't things I am interested in exploring.
I first got Unfamiliar from Netgalley last year and absolutely LOVED that book! Unfamiliar Vol 2 follows suit as we continue on the adventures of Planchette and her fellow witchy friends, as well as making new ones. I loved the art in this series as much as I did in Volume 1 and the added Fae characters were fun! The only thing I disliked is that I felt the ending wrapped up too perfectly and easily. I would love to read more from this author/creator!
Bubbly gothic characters! This is the second volume, and it’s just as cute and precious as the first one. I loved everything about it ☺️❤️ There are adorable friendships and a blossoming romance amongst the different characters, and the artwork was wonderful to look at.
I got this on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review!
I really enjoyed this volume, and honestly this is the kind of story where it feels really slow in Vol 1 but once you get to know the characters and the friend-group is more established you absolutely LOVE them! ❤️ Loved the story in this volume a LOT and loved seeing the dynamic between the different characters (especially Sun and Babs!
Also: fuck the Faerie King SO much
This was a cutesy graphic novel that continued the story. I enjoyed how the storyline has characters that are filled with so much love and that express their love to others. The artwork is adorable as well.
While Planchette and her friends are on a mission to help a ghost bride complete her unfinished business and move on, they make some interesting discoveries. The curse on Sun has finally been broken, but now Babs can’t eat a single thing because food goes bad the second she touches it. Now they have a new curse to get to the bottom of, but the nature of this curse is highly suspicious. Meanwhile, a longtime mystery is about to come to a head and it’s somehow connected with Planchette and friends in the most unexpected way. Poor Planchette and her friends just wanted to help a ghost bride move on and help Sun get rid of her curse, but it seems that things are multiplying in the strangest ways!
I absolutely loved the first volume of this series, so I was extremely excited to start volume two and see where the story takes us next. This time around, we follow Planchette and her friends as they work to help a ghost bride finally finish the unsettled business that left her haunting the living world. However, that’s not their only adventure because there’s new developments on the curse front and they have to figure out how to deal with the Faerie King. Not only that, there’s also finally a break in a long-standing murder mystery and they’re all about to get sucked in. We really pick up exactly where we left off in volume one, so we hit the ground running. Hard!
Like the first volume, this was an absolute delight to read. I love how rich and layered each of the characters are. I also love how the darker storylines are balanced well with lighter storylines so that the overall tone isn’t too dark or sad. This time around, we spend more time with Sun and Babs, learning more about Sun’s homelife and how difficult her family is. I really feel for Sun and how even her own mother treats her! I also love how the ghost bride’s plot is resolved while still furthering the plot.
All in all, this is such a fun and quick read. The artwork is stunning and really aids in how the story is told. I was a bit surprised by the big twist and I love how the artwork really aided in driving that twist home. I’m excited to see how the story continues from here, so I’ll be back again when the third volume eventually drops.
I loved coming back to this world! I love the characters, friendships, and blooming romance. It's a good time to see them try to get out of the situations they end up in, and how they end up in those situations in the first place.
The illustrations are perfect; cute and creepy. I cant wait to read more!
Thank you to NetGalley for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Both Unfamiliar vol 1 and Unfamiliar vol 2 were a lot of fun. There are a bunch of unique characters with their own fun interactions. The story, although short, was a lot of fun to read and I was almost sad when it was all over and done.
4/5 stars, a cute little follow-up sequel
Thank you to Andrews McMeel Publishing for the arc through netgalley in exchange for an honest review!
The first little graphic novel in this series of titles called 'Unfamiliar' was very cute and so when I saw this available on this netgalley I wanted to definitely check it out. This book was short and sweet, just like the first one, but I really enjoyed how there was now a focus on two of the side characters from the first book. It allowed me to like them even more than I did in the first one.
Beyond that, this was a nice story of accepting yourself for how you are, but also letting other people love you for the way you are. This was a really sweet message to read and see in this little graphic novel, and I really think it was an important message as well. I do look forward to seeing if there are other books in this fun little series.
[TW: death and murder, trickery, death of a loved one, chronic illness]
Uh. This was a bit of a miss for me. I just didn't like it as much as the first one. I love the illustrations - the style and the colors were spot on. But the story itself was a bit lacking. Just nothing special about it. Nothing we haven't read a thousand times. Maybe I'm being a bit too harsh, but it's how I felt about it. I couldn't connect with anyone or anything, and so the read wasn't all that engaging to me. Sorry.
Winston, always the voice of reason, always stealing my heart with is tiny cuteness.
I loved this second volume of Unfamiliar. The story picked up right where the first volume left off. In this volume we follow more personal struggle and growth story, but mainly focusing on Sun and Babs this time. I loved to see the little unexpected twist ending I was not expecting too!
I highly enjoyed this read and will be keeping my eye out for future works from this artist.
Thanks NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for an ARC of this volume.
Perfect.
The author is good at it ..I am too excited to give a detailed review.
This book is awesome!!
Thanks to Netgalley for giving me an advanced reader copy.
