I loved the first book in this series so I was excited but also a bit nervous to read this, the second book. I should not have been so nervous because while it was not quite as good as the first book, this one held its own just fine. I loved that, through the telling of the story in the present, we learned a bit about these characters’ pasts and a bit more about who they are. The storyline is classic but with its own little flair. Basically, I can’t wait to see more from Haley Newsome in the future.
I would like to thank the publisher, author, and Netgalley for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.
I adored the first graphic novel in this series and found it to be the perfect mix of whimsical and spooky. I found this second installment to be the same and enjoyed the continuation of the story. I cannot wait for the next in the series. This series is perfect for everyone, even non spooky fans since this is so cute and light!
Continuing the story from Unfamiliar, we follow the mystery of Lucy's death and Planchette, Sun, Babs and Pinyon's involvement in the mystery's resolution. At the same time, they fight curses, inner demons and other obstacles that are thrown their way. Colorful, entertaining and captivating, this is a great and fun read.
Another super fun and spookily whimsical volume of Unfamiliar. This series is just so adorable, entertaining and just pure fluff that is a joy to read. It was also the perfect cutesy spooky read for my non horror friends who still want to enjoy the October vibes! Cant wait to see what this band of witches gets up to in the next volume!

I received an eARC for my honest opinion.
I really enjoyed Vol.1 of this book and Vol.2 is just as cute, cozy, and witchy as the first book. This book has some old adventures like trying to figure out who killed Lucy, but you will see some new adventures, a Faerie King who wants Babs and does whatever he can to make sure that she is his. You will Pinyon and Planchette working together to get rid of a bride ghost in her house. You will see Sun there still trying to get rid of her curse and then to help Babs with the King. Also, you will get to see a new romance in this Vol. I won’t say who because you need to read these 2 Vol. to find out.
I thought the pace of the GN was done well and the author had the readers engaged throughout the book. I loved that we got to see a little of what will happen in Vol. 3, and I can’t wait for that one to come out.
I loved the art so much on each page, it really helped to bring the characters to life for me. It's so cute, cozy, and witchy. This was the best time of year to read this book.
I want to thank NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the opportunity to review this book.
Just as charming and fun as volume 1! The art style for this little witchy tale is so unique and colorful and I really love it. The characters are all so different and fun and I feel the story balances well between them all. The plot was continued smoothly from book one and where it wrapped up felt like it may have been an ending but I do hope we get a third volume!
I enjoyed the second installment of this series! I love the illustrations, and I really loved the message in this as well. Unfamiliar has been popular in my library so I purchased this book when it was released!
This was a cute continuation of the first graphic novel. Fans will love returning to the story to see what happens next.
This was such a good second volume! We picked up right where we left off in volume one. We get to see some more of the evil Faerie King and the girls get to throw a wedding for a ghost bride that is haunting Planchette's house. I loved how much we got to see of Sun and Bab's relationship, they are so cute! I can't wait to read more and see where the story goes.
This was a fun graphic novel to read for fall! There was more a mystery element in this book with some new characters introduced to complicate the adventures. I liked the art a lot and it was a fast moving plot. I’m looking forward to reading more in this series!
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
Thank you to Netgalley, Andrews McMeel Publishing, and Haley Newsome for an advanced copy of this book! All opinions are my own. Available as of October 17, 2023.
In Unfamiliar 2, we spend time with Planchette's friends, Sun and Babs, whom she met in Volume One. They face curses, an annoying Faerie King, family issues, and new feelings. In the background, Planchette works with Pinyon to help another ghost find peace.
The story was very fast-paced in this installment. We were given a lot of information that wasn’t expanded upon. Instead, it seemed to be setting up for future events. This as well as the jumping between storylines made it feel like there was too much being juggled at once. The drawing style and color palette were certainly highlights of this book. We also got to learn more about their world and other characters, which was fun. Seeing the characters grow over the span of the two books has made for an interesting read.
Thank you to NetGalley, Andrews McMeel publishing, and Ms. Newsome for the opportunity to read an Arc of this title. An honest review was requested but not required.
Unfamiliar 2 was every bit as visually appealing and charming as book 1, with absolutely adorable art (definitely the cutest Death I’ve ever seen). The plot was a bit chaotic with a lot of different things happening. As sweet as Sun and Babs’ blossoming romance was, I really liked Planchette’s house ghosts storyline from book 1 and wish that had been given as much attention. I’d say 5 stars for the art and 3 stars for the story. Overall though a cute, charming, sweet graphic novel with a very unique style.
I think Unfamiliar is one of the graphic novels that has the most beautiful art currently, mainly due to the choice of use of colors, but unfortunately the story doesn't really click with me. A shame, because I really like the idea. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an arc in exchange for an honest review!
Unfamiliar is one of my favorite series ever! The second volume was amazing, with so many twists and turns. The girls had to deal with a tricky fairy prince and help a ghost bride have the wedding she planned before dying. Sun grew a lot as a character. And I was so happy to see the romance I was rooting for finally happen. The art was gorgeous, with beautiful colors and details. I can't wait for the next volume!
I came across it by chance and when I noticed it was the second book of the series, I was thrilled! The art is so cuuute! And the story is really sweet - it teaches us to love someone based on wasn't inside, and not based on their looks. If you like reading comics, I would strongly recommend this one! Rating: 4/5 stars.
This was so cute! A nice witchy read for October. The art style is so cute and all of the characters were so sweet and quirky in their own way. I would love to read more from this crew of witches.
A big thanks to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
This art style is just *chef's kiss*
Unfamiliar 2 by Haley Newsome is the sequel graphic novel of Unfamilair. Which is about, young kitchen witch Planchette who gets an incredible deal on a new house in a magical town. Turns out, there's a reason: it's haunted! After unsuccessfully attempting to get these unwanted ghosts to leave, she realizes the only thing to do is to help them with their problems. Along the way, she befriends a shy siren who hates being popular, a girl battling a curse, and a magically-challenged witch from a powerful coven.
I just love Newsome's art style, as it is both cutsey and gruesome. Also I'm just overjoyed at getting more stories about Planchette. I was seriously missing her and all of her friends. Now I'm just sad that there won't be a third volume.
Recommended: yep!
For a continuation of lightly spooky stories, for friendship as a focus, for a bit of heartbreak if you can stand it
Thoughts:
I'm so excited I didn't have to wait too long for this second volume after stumbling upon the first recently! This continuation was very sweet and expanded a bit on the character backgrounds of the main crew whom we hadn't seen as much of.
The toughest theme for me in this volume was of dreams feeling like they were coming true and then being snatched away all over. It was tough to see the characters come so close only to lose out again. They save each other and stand by to lift each other up, though, and I am always a big fan of those kinds of stories. Still, be ready to be hurt a lil bit in this volume if you're tender-hearted like me.
There's also a wrap-up to one of the bigger plot points and surprises that I was excited to see conclude. It was done well and I somehow didn't see it coming?? Then felt like a dolt for not seeing it coming? But I don't mind because it was a fun experience nonetheless.
The art style remains the same as the first, though I feel like I had an easier time parsing out some of the more complex visual panels. This might just be due to having learned the cadence, in a way, from Volume One, but for whatever reason it was easier to follow along right as I jumped back in.
Thanks to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for a free advanced copy. This is my honest review.
I absolutely adored the first book, but unfortunately, I didn’t like this second volume as much. The illustrations are still beautiful and gorgeous. I still loved the art style and color palette used. It definitely gave me spooky, ghostly, witchy vibes, which I loved. I really enjoyed the friendships between all the witches.
However, I felt like the pacing was off for this novel. It felt rushed, and it hopped around a bit much too quickly. It was hard to keep track of all the plotlines. The transitions between the plots barely existed, so it felt disjointed and confusing. It felt like too much was crammed into a short novel so that this duology could feel complete. I did appreciate how everything came together for a satisfying conclusion, but the execution needed a bit more work. It felt a bit chaotic at times, and there was a lot going on. There is also a budding queer romance that I wish stayed on the friendship path and didn’t veer off in that direction, but it is what it is.
After reading the first book, which set the foundation for the four main characters, I feel like a better approach to this series would’ve been for each character to have gotten her own novel. That way we would’ve gotten a chance to go more in-depth with each girl, gotten more backstory, and seen more character development. Then a final installment could’ve brought everyone back together and tied up any loose ends. But it’s still a cute, sweet graphic novel with some good life lessons.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. These are my own thoughts and opinions.
This sequel was okay. I liked the same spooky vibes that the first one gave, but I don't remember the illustrations being a bit off. Like unfinished or something was different with them. Maybe it was the digital ARC I got. Anyway, I know kids will love it and check it out just like they do the first one.
