Unfamiliar 2 follows Planchette and her friends as they continue to help the ghosts haunting Planchette's residence. This story focuses more on Sun and Babs, delving more into Sun's curse and her feelings for Babs.
While I continue to have an appreciation for the unique art style in this graphic novel series, it did feel very disjointed at times and featured some themes that I don't like in my books.
From an unbiased perspective, I think most readers who enjoy quirky, witchy graphic novels will love this one.
Thank you NetGalley, Andrews McMeel Publishing and Haley Newsome for the ARC copy of Unfamiliar Vol 2.
I read volume 1 last year and feel in love the the world and character. Such a heartwarming story of friendship between these adorable girls.
In volume 2, their relationships deepen as the girls learn to develop their witch powers and start believing in themselves. They are working at finding the murderer of all the lost ghosts living in Planchette's house and even go up against a fairy king. I loved the development in the "love story" between Bab's and Sun, they are both so young and shy in their feelings for each other.
As always the art is perfection. I love the color pallet and there are such adorable little touches in the illustrations throughout the book.
I can not wait to see how the adventure continues.
In the first Volume, we met our four witchy friends and their familiars: Planchette and Winston the rabbit, Pinyon and Ari the pigeon, Babs and Marlow the cat, and Sun and Petra the lizard.
In this Volume, Planchette’s home is still very much haunted. One of our witches attracts the attention of the Faerie King and becomes possessed (temporarily). There’s also a wedding to plan. For a ghost.
There’s friend protection frittata, a floating lake and a visit to a profoundly evil forest.
We meet a doctor who would do anything for love and Death, who is a lot cuter than I expected.
The story didn’t always flow quite as well for me as the first Volume did but I absolutely loved the time spent focusing on Sun, who has an opportunity for her curse to be removed.
I really like the artwork and the colour palette. My favourite illustrations tend to be those that announce new chapters. Chapter Seven was the standout for me in this Volume.
I’d recommend reading the first Volume before diving into this one. I’m keen to continue reading this series.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the opportunity to read this graphic novel.
Another fun adventure for the Unfamiliars. Slightly darker than the first one, but still a fun Halloween read.
Friendship, romance, curses, ghosts, and a wedding!
Very cute. Very wholesome.
I enjoyed this a bit more than the first one and would read more stories set in this world.
If you're looking for a short, cozy graphic novel with witches, ghosts and found families, consider giving this series a go.
this was a really cute graphic novel! i actually haven't heard of this or its webtoon version until recently, when my little sister started raving to me about it. she loved it so much that i was overcome with curiosity and when i saw the second volume on netgalley, i took the opportunity to read both volumes at once. i had a good time overall — this volume was definitely better than the first, i liked the plot better here and love how it spotlighted babs and sun who were actually my favorites in vol. 1! i would have liked a lot more plot or character focus at times but i'm not too picky about it as this is a webtoon. would recommend to anyone who needs a light fall read.
This novel has the cutest illustrations and a cozy storyline, just like the first volume! I love the magic and witchy element to it as well as the layered friendships and relationships explored. It was nice to learn more about Sun’s character and see her relationship with Babs grow. However, the world itself felt rather disjointed and the dialogue didn’t really help to create a clear world and storyline. I think this graphic novel aimed to cover too many different elements and character storylines in a short amount of pages. It would’ve been nice to see the ghost bride’s story being explored in more depth in a seperate novel. Despite this, I loved the cute cozy aesthetic and beautiful illustrations. I’d be keen to read the next volume!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing and ARC in return for an honest review.
I feel like I enjoyed the first volume a little more than this one. It felt like everything went a little too fast in this one. It was still really cute and I enjoyed getting to read more about the characters. Thank you so much to Netgalley and the Publisher for a copy of the arc in return for an honest review.
An adorable continuation to the first in the series.
Definitely recommend reading the first novel before divong into this one.
Very cute art style.
Plot was captivating as well.
This was the perfect read to kick off October, delightfully whimsical and creepy at the same time, I loved seeing the new adventures that the girls embarked on, Sun’s journey to self-acceptance, Babs getting more and more confident and finding her true family, Planchette and Pinyon continuing on their quest to help the ghosts.
This is a cute and cozy story, the drawings are both adorable and eerie, making this a universe where strangeness is the norm and I was there for it.
I was wholly invested in the friendships, the romance and the mystery, so much so that I was disappointed to find out at the end that it was indeed the end of their adventures.
A delightful graphic novel that will draw you in.
Join the cast of witches as they try to solve an old murder, and lift a curse.
Drawn in a style that will have you looking like the heart-eye emoji, the story is engaging and magical. The characters are fantastical and easy to root for, bringing you along for their ride of self-discovery.
Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the opportunity to read this book for free and provide my honest opinion.
I loved this book. It was so cute and wholesome, just like the first one, and yet it still dealt with some pretty serious issues, like learning to accept yourself and, you know, murder. I hope that there is another one in the future because I've grown fond of these characters.
After reading Volume 1 of Unfamiliar, I knew I had to get my hands on Volume 2 for this spooky season! This graphic novel was super cute and the art style is still one of my favorites that I’ve seen in a graphic novel! The first one is still my favorite, but I loved this one as well! If you’re looking for graphic novels to read during October, these are a must!
Thank you to Netgalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!
Unfamiliar 2 is just as cute and fun as the first. I love this group of friends and the love they have for each other. If you love quick, cozy stories about witches this series is for you.
Unfamiliar Vol. 2 waste no time in dropping you right back into the cute, comforting world that readers grew to know in volume 1. It’s easy to dive back into this diverse, eccentric fun world.
The art grew on me this volume. It’s just so perfectly fitting for the world that the author created. It helps bring the eccentric, fun, comforting feel to the world by really backing up what the characters are doing and saying. I think that it adds it’s share of humor to things that to had me smiling and enjoying it.
I fully enjoyed this, but this volume does have a lot going on. It will jump from one point to another which at times left me feeling like plot points were rushed, the ending one in particular felt rushed.
All in all, I had a good time. This is a short, quick read. It has the same fun, whimsical nature that the first volume has. If you’ve enjoyed the first volume, pick this one up and continue the story!
I would like to thank NetGalley, Andrew McMeel Publishing, and the author for an advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
“I can’t just leave you here. You don’t have to deal with this by yourself. I want to help.”

Planchette is a kitchen witch who moves with her familiar, Winston, to a new house. The house is perfect, except for the many ghosts haunting the house. Lonely, Planchette befriends another witch to help her in ridding her home if the ghosts by helping them find peace. The two witches also become friends with a hard working girl with a curse and a siren who just wants to be left alone. In volume 2, the friends help a ghost bride finally have her wedding, take on a faerie king, and help to solve a centuries old mystery.
These books are so cute and perfect for spooky season if you want something light and not very spooky. I read these for witch week and really enjoyed seeing the friendships, and possibly romance, form. The art is unique and fun. I wanted more backstory for the main characters and the story felt a little rushed but I will definitely read more. I hope a third volume is in the works!
This was a great quick read, that I will definitely come back too just to look at the awesome art.
The writing featured an interesting story filled with funny and cute moments, but the art blew me away. The character design is unique and consistent and the color scheme is to die for. Loved it!
This is the second in the series Unfamiliar, based on a popular web comic by Newsome. Readers follow a group of characters, all magical in their own way, in a slice of life story which centers a queer romance. I found the art style to be refreshingly unique, and it reminded me of nineties/naughties cartoons in the best way. I loved the variance in character design and found each cell to have a great amount of detail. The characters are accentuated with small features that are endearing and fun, like egg yolk shaped eyes for the kitchen witch.
It often felt like each cell could have been made into a whole page of dialogue and it would have felt more immersive. I think that the dialogue could have used another pass, but I was still engaged enough to keep me invested in the story. I didn't follow the web comic, so I wonder if this is due to condensing the original longer story. Regardless, the art is gorgeous and the story was very cute.
As I found the first book really enjoyable, I jumped at the chance to read the sequel. Each one of the characters are precious in their own way, and they all deserve the world. While I loved the characters, I didn’t find this one as enjoyable as the first one. The major issue for me was the pacing. The story was really interesting, but felt like it didn’t get the space to fully develop properly and thus felt a bit rushed.
Such a cute sequel! I love seeing the friendships evolve and the teamwork between them. I hope there's more to come in this adorable series!
