I was SO excited when I saw that Unfamiliar was getting a second volume!

Unfamiliar is an adorable graphic novel that follows a kitchen witch named Planchette and her friends Pinyon, Sun, and Babs. In this installment, the friends deal with (more) ghosts, curses, and also a mischievous Faerie King.

This is such a cute, cozy, and funny series! The art style is stunning, it is probably one of the most visually pleasing graphic novels I've read. The colors, setting, and characters are all so bright and charming. I love every character and reading about how they work together to figure out the fantastical situations they find themselves in.

If you haven't read Unfamiliar yet, I would highly recommend it! If you read the first volume already, volume two is just as good as volume one.

I'm looking forward to future volumes of this story, or anything else Haley Newsome creates.

Title: Unfamiliar Vol.2
Authors: Haley Newsome
Rating: 4/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Release Date: 17 October 2023

This book was just so adorable. It is the perfect mix of spooky witchy goodness and cute wholesome fun. There is so much fun packed into this volume as well that at each new narrative turn, I was hooked. I like how we started where we left off with volume 1 helping out some ghosts, and how that carried through the whole book. But I also liked how we did some other things that then later came back to throw some red herrings and plot twists around. We got a lot of character development in here which was awesome to see.
I will say there may have been a bit too much happening and things may have felt a bit rushed. Like a lot happened that really probably needed more build-up and explorations because as it stands several things there towards the end were very here is the thing for 2 pages but sike it's actually this other thing that will also last 2 pages.
But I still really enjoyed it. It is a perfect read for thoes looking for autumn vibes without the heavy spooks. Just the lighthearted kind that come from a world of witches, ghosts, and the fae.

I received a free copy of Unfamiliar 2 from Netgalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing in exchange for an honest review.
This second volume of Unfamiliar is easier to follow than the first. Our protagonists meet the Fairy King, throw a wedding for a ghost, and work on breaking that curse!
It’s a very fun story with cute characters and adorable artwork that suits the witchy adventures of Planchette and her friends quite well.

This was so cute, a quirky comfort read I thoroughly enjoyed. The character development was excellent and emotiinally charged. With sprinkles of humor and paranormal conundrums, the story was a fun read. It wrapped up a bit too quickly and cleanly but overall, i was mostly sad it was over amd hope to see more from these four unlikely friends.

Five full stars! This time of year, I'm pretty sure most of us are looking for cozy Fall reads and this graphic novel not only fits that demographic, it's a wonderful continuation of Unfamiliar 1. I think the one thing you will take away from reading this book is sometimes the villain who doesn't hide his bad ways isn't always the bad guy you are looking for. It's the people who hide their villainous ways that are most dangerous. At least the villain doesn't hide the fact that he's a bad guy.

Loved this so much and I hope there will be more books in the future!

I really enjoyed Unfamiliar Volume 1, and Volume 2 continues in the same cute, cozy vein.

The strength in this story continues to be the friendships and romances between our main cast, and this volume is strong as it focuses on Sun's curse and her growing relationship with Babs. I enjoyed seeing Sun's journey unfold, though the meandering into the fairy realm felt a little disjointed.

There's also the ongoing mystery/side quest of figuring out why so many ghosts are haunting Planchette's home. The story helping one ghost was super cute, though the reveal of where the ghosts were coming from felt a bit too rushed.

At times it did feel like this volume was juggling a bit too much; the jumps from storyline to storyline made things feel a little too chaotic. It could have been a bit more streamlined.

The art continues to be super cute and stylized, I really enjoy it.

Thanks to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the opportunity to read this! Unfamiliar, Volume 2 will be released on October 17th.

This story really had it all - humor, sweet moments, mystery, action! I haven't read the first book in the series, but I caught up pretty quickly with what was going on. The illustrations/graphics took a little getting used to but once I did I saw how they really added to the story and brought it to life. I loved the sense of humor of the author, especially with Planchette - my favorite line in the entire book was "Then use a Ouija board, you psycho!" I loved the friendships between all the characters. The mini mysteries embedded within the story were really interesting - both the fairie king curse and the dead brides. I don't know the whole backstory on Sun's curse but I felt so bad for her when she had to choose between having it return and saving her friend (not that it was really much of a decision for her, but still). If the rest of the series is as good as this was I am very much looking forward to reading more from it!

The perfect combination of sweet and spooky!

I didn’t read the first volume but I am going to because I loved this one. But honestly, I needed some time to get into the story and get used to the very strange illustrations. Beautiful and detailed but strange.

So much happens and there’s so much to see and the amount of originality made me so excited! I wish I could share some of the incredible things I saw and read but I guess it’s for you to discover!

There’s friendship, love, mysteries, lots of magic and mayhem, unexpected twists, topics like acceptance are well handled and there’s just so much to see, you won’t be bored for a second!

Thank you NetGalley for providing me with this copy in exchange for my honest review.

This was another cute story & loved seeing progression from volume 1 along with new characters. I didn’t love how conveniently this wrapped up at the end which is why I only rated this or 4 instead of 5 stars. But I’ll still happily read more volumes because I do love the art and characters!

I love this series. It so much fun and I absolutely love the illustrations. Every page has so much detail and so much to look at. The characters and the ghosts are great and the little twist that was in this volume was definitely not what i was expecting. I can't wait for volume three and to see where this story goes!

Planchette and her witchy friends are back trying to help their town and solve magical hijinks. Volume two has them helping a ghost bride, battling a blackmailing Faerie King, exploring a possible new romance, and taking a camping trip to a very evil forest.

I was so excited to revisit the world of Unfamiliar with volume two! I loved the first volume so much and had such a good time with it, my review copy is still proudly on my graphic novel shelf. This one is super low stakes, full of Newsome's colorful and adorable art, and perfectly cozy/spooky for the Halloween season. I'm a sucker for a good found family/friendship focused story and Unfamiliar delivers every single time.

Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel for providing me with a copy for an honest review!

A graphic novel full of witches and fairies and curses—and the most adorable personification of Death I’ve ever seen. I wish the plot didn’t rely so heavily on coincidence, but the art—which walls the line between cute and grotesque—propelled me to the end.

I've been on a real journey lately with brightly colored Graphic Novels with spooky themes or super cute low stakes fantasy. This is sort of a cross over between the two and the art is so unbelievably adorable!

I loved the story and the relationship building continuation between the first half and this as the last half. The banter, the friendship, the love--it was all there!

When we finally meet Death, that was my absolute favorite. At the time of finishing, that episode had not been release on Tapas, so now I must wait to talk about it--but the wait will be worth it.

I really hope this series continues!

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

I remember first reading some of the story on tapas, back in the day, and when I saw this being published as a book, I got curious as to how the story proceeded. So I made a request and got to read an ARC - thank you, Netgalley for the opportunity!

The story interlaces quite a few themes, from the curses and self depreciation to the crimes and infatuation of a fairy king. At the core, the second volume reads like a love story with a little bit of mystery. We get to witness the queer teen love of a pair of witches, as well as the well established love of a doctor and an artist. The mystery comes from the random ghosts infesting the kitchen witch’s house.

Overall, the story is interesting, donning an unique artstyle, however, the plot was rushed and I feel like there was a pretty good opportunity for a deeper exploration of the world. This is a quick read though and a fun experience for the lovers of the spooks.

I just love this little graphic novel series so much!

This is perfect for fall reading, its cozy and cute and also a little eerie, as well as hilarious and charming. The themes of friendship and love are so heartwarming, as is the sapphic love story between Babs and Sun. The murder mystery is the perfect mixture of intriguing and funny, and it actually took me quite by surprise where things went in this volume. The presence of the ghosts in Planchette's house is also so adorable and hilarious, as are her antics as a kitchen witch who is trying to be helpful in higher stakes situations outside of her kitchen.

I think this is an absolute must read for fans of witches and fall reading, and anyone who adores a beautiful and quirky art style. I was so happy to see this appear on NetGalley just before October as I loved reading volume one at this time last year!

Thank you so much to Andrews McMeel Publishing, Haley Newsome & NetGalley for the eArc of this beautiful graphic novel! I can't wait to recommend it to everyone this autumn!

Thank you to the publisher for the arc!

After requesting the first volume on a whim, I knew I had to grab the second one and I’m so glad I did. This was a fantastic continuation!

This second volume of the webcomic Unfamiliar finds little witch Planchette and her friends Pinyon, Sun, and Babs on another set of adventures. Babs and Sun must deal with a blackmailing Faerie King who wants Babs to become his wife -- and who will entice Sun with the removal of her curse to make her do his bidding. Meanwhile, Planchette and Pinyon encounter a ghost bride who wants desperately to have her lost wedding so she can rest in peace.

As before, the comic leans into the themes of supportive friendship as well as of loving yourself and healing your body image. The characters all have distinct personalities but somehow fit together in deeply supportive ways, and while they might be hesitant with some of their witchy powers, they want to use their skills for good. Heartwarming. 4 stars.

Thank you, Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley, for providing an eARC of this book. Opinions expressed here are solely my own.

Such an adorable read that I absolutely loved! As soon as I received this book, I immediately read the first in the Unfamiliar Series and blew through Volume 2 the next day. It was a sweet read that made me laugh, gave me all sorts of feels, and was so visually pleasing. Young Adult/Teen graphic novels are where it’s at and people are missing out on this amazing genre. Definitely recommend this one!
