Review of One Wrong Word
Hank Phillipi Ryan has done it again.
‘One Wrong Word’ is a masterfully crafted Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride of suspicion, intrigue and deceit. Your brain won’t be tempted to wander off while reading this book as it
demands your attention while it twists and turns its way through two life changing weeks. I was absolutely sure I had figured out who did it and how but my smug smile would fade more than once as another twist proved me wrong.
Hank had my mind spinning and racing to keep up till the end.
The characters and plot keep you reading straight through to the end. I didn’t want to put it down.
As a longtime Bostonian I loved being able to picture the locations in my mind. Hank is very descriptive.
This book would make a great thriller/whodunnit movie and should be filmed in Boston.
I highly recommend this book.
Thank you to the author and NetGalley for the opportunity to read it in advance.
FIrst time reading a book by this author. It was fast paced and the plot was strong. There were a few instances where I lost my attention, but that didn't take away from my final thoughts on this book. I am excited to read future novels by this gifted author!
I absolutely LOVED One Wrong Word. I was intrigued from the very beginning and by the end of the first chapter I knew this book was going to be SO GOOD. Hank's characters drew me in - some I really liked and some I really disliked. Everytime I thought I had things figured out, another plot twist popped up to keep me engrossed through the entire book and I kept vacillating back and forth on who the "good guys" were. I spent more than one night up WAY too late because I had to read "just one more chapter", which invariably turned into more. If you enjoy suspense you MUST read One Wrong Word!
Another twisting, turning, who’s-double-crossing-whom story by Hank Phillippi Ryan. Great dialogue — and yes, I read the acknowledgements — to know she probably drove her copyeditor and proofreader a little batty.
And good use of the word “one” and “once” and other similar phrases to always tie back to the title.
Just when I think Hank can’t possibly top her last story, she does.
Thanks for a great read!
This is a gripping, gut clenching story. Arden has been hired to do public relations for a man who has just been found not guilty, and for that of his wife. Neither is telling her the entire truth. The wife is concerned not only for him, but for herself and their two children. And then she drops strange morsels of information - hints?
Arden has been fired from her public relations job for something she didn't do. She's contending with that, her former boss, the losing trial DA, and her client's own lawyer. The reader knows, feels in their very being that something is wrong - really out of whack. But what? And who can Arden trust?
The reader is buffeted from all sides, and is forced to work really hard to figure out what is true, what isn't, who is going to benefit, who is trying to hurt others. Marvelous story that will keep the reader guessing and reading more and more quickly until the end.
My heartfelt thanks to @thrillerbookloverspromotions @hankpryan & @forgereads for having me on this tour!
This is being released on Feb 6, 2024! Pre-order it now! You won’t regret it.
Wow, what a mind bender this was. Speaking of complicated plots, but it was everything I expected and more. This was my first novel by @hankpryan and I don’t know why I’ve never read this author before!
When I start a thriller, the detective in me starts looking for clues and signs that point to who the culprit might be. But I've never been so confused about who was telling the truth as with this story. The author took me on a wild goose chase until I no longer knew who to believe.
Arden Ward has just been fired from the Boston PR office where she works, but before she leaves, her boss Warren wants her to take on one last client.
Her client, Cordelia Bannister, is at a loss with the curveball life has thrown her. Her husband Ned has been acquitted in his trial for drunk driving that resulted in a man's death. But reporters still won't leave them alone, and now Cordelia believes her husband may not be innocent after all.
You can't help but root for Arden as she tries to help the couple get back on their feet. But the more she gets involved in the story, the more it doesn't make sense. Take Cordelia, for example, why does she seem afraid of her husband? And what exactly is Ned hiding?
At 60% in I was as confused as Arden appeared, and by the time I reached 85% on my kindle I had changed my mind 4 times about who the culprit was!
Believe it or not, this is my first book by this author and I just couldn't put it down until I knew what the heck was going on!
Another superb suspenseful thriller by Hank Phillippi Ryan. Keeps you guessing as you keep changing your suspects right up until the end. Don't miss this one!
Crisis management specialist Arden Ward is dealing with her own crisis--falsely accused of having an affair with a wealthy client, her boss has given her two weeks. But before she goes, as a favor to him, she has to take on high-profile client Cordelia Bannister. Cordelia is still being scorned by the other mommies even after her husband, Ned, was acquitted of murder after running over a skateboarder in his company's parking garage.
As Arden is just getting started on the assignment, Ned's attorney is improbably also the victim of a hit and run, and the vehicle involved looks suspiciously like Ned's. With Cordelia out of town on a girls' getaway, and the Bannister children with their grandmother in Vermont, Arden and Ned begin navigating this latest crisis. But when Ned's daughter calls, crying, Arden finds herself on a picture-perfect Vermont weekend. Perfect except for the fact she might be in the company of a killer.
Full of plot twists, this novel is vintage Hank Phillippi Ryan. Perfectly in control on the surface, Arden has her own self-doubts, while also doubting whether she can trust her clients. Or her assistant. And her boss is definitely no-go. #OneWrongWord #NetGalley
Hank writes another fabulous story where the characters intertwine an pit other characters against each other. After acquittal Warren and his wife Cordelia hire Arden to fix their image. Power, greed & money continue never fail to make a juicy story., and Hank wrote that story. A rollercoaster ride to the very end.
Thank you @forgebooks @netgalley for a copy of this book. I have enjoyed books from the author and this premise sounded interesting. Unfortunately this was a miss for me and I should have DNF it. Once Arden was given an ultimatum about her job, she should have said F this place and sue them for wrongful termination.
There is a lot of misdirection in the story between Ned and Cordelia. I had a hard time understanding why Arden was so dedicated to helping them with repairing their image when she was so upset with her job situation. I was annoyed with all the characters other than Pip who sounded like a cute kid.
This is undoubtedly Hank's best book yet. I went back and forth thinking I knew who the bad guy was over and over again, only to change my mind on the next page. Appealing characters and a terrific plot. I'd like to see this become the first in a new series. It's that good.
I'm always excited for a new book by Hank Phillipi Ryan and this one lived up to my expectations! It was a very fast read with many twists and turns.
This book is full of very unlikable, love to hate, characters and secrets and lies. It is hard to know who is telling the truth. The only character I truly liked was Arden, who is tasjed with trying to help Ned recover his reputation from a murder acquittal.
I really loved the title for this one and how choosing right/wrong words played a major role in this book.
Thank you to Tor Publishing, the author and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review.
This suspense thriller left me breathless with anticipation as I raced from one surprising scene to another, always with a new revelation that just about blew my mind and kept changing what I thought I had figured out. I don’t know about you but I love it when a book keeps me engaged with twists that keep me guessing. This is a twisty mystery about who killed pedestrian Tennant in a parking garage belonging to wealthy Ned Bannister. Ned’s reputation is damaged regardless of how the trial turns out, so Arden Ward, a public relations expert, is hired to help the Bannisters face the press and teach them what to say in public. The plot is breathtakingly complex and the characters are multi-dimensional and realistically portrayed. This is a completely engrossing story of what happens when one prosecutor and a PR agent are determined to follow the clues to the truth, even if it means encountering unexpected danger. The details are revealed in a painstakingly methodical way that kept me guessing during the addictive mind bending story. I loved everything about this book, especially the red herrings and the sharp writing. The story was rich with authentic details and with an original and intriguing plot. The clever plot twists were remarkable and head spinning, written in the author’s signature brilliant style. Captivating and well-crafted fiction that compelled me to keep turning the pages from beginning to end!

The first book I’ve read by this author and I really enjoyed it! A bit of a slow start, and halfway through I thought I had figured it out, but more twists and turns unfolded and everything got wrapped up in a way I hadn’t seen coming. Will definitely be checking out more of her books! Thanks to Netgalley for the free e-arc in exchange for a review.
I love Hank Phillippi Ryan's standalone books & this new one does nor disappoint!!!!!!! The twists and turns in it will have your head spinning as you try to figure it out
When we first meet Arden Ward, she is a crisis management expert who has been falsely accused of having an affair with a client and is subsequently fired. However, before she leaves her job, her boss gives her one last client – Ned and Cordelia Bannister.
Ned is a real estate executive in Boston and for the last year, has been on trail for the fatal hit-and-run accident in his building’s parking garage. After he is found not guilty by the jury, he and Cordelia think their lives will go back to normal quickly. However, that is not the case. Cordelia is getting threatening text messages and she’s not sure where they are coming from. She also questions whether Ned is really innocent of the crime. When there is a second accident, and it looks like Ned may be to blame for this one too, Arden begins to wonder if Cordelia may be right.
This was a twisty read with lots of red herrings thrown in to keep you guessing.
The first definite must read of 2024! Hank Ryan Phillipe has done it again. Well written - can't put down thriller from cover to cover.
OH MY GOODNESS! What a thrilling way to start the year! "One Wrong Word" had me on the edge of my seat and I have more than one word to describe Hank Phillippi Ryan's newest adventure. This is a fantastic, exciting, must-read that has twists and turns throughout. I went back-and-forth wondering who did what but was very happy with the outcome!
In addition to an amazing cast of characters and a very satisfying ending, I see potential for more to come with Arden. She's in an unlikely friendship that would be wonderful to explore and there's also a couple of potential love interests that would be fun to see where they go. So please Hank Phillippi Ryan, let this be the first of many times that we're treated to these special people!
It's been my pleasure to read an advanced copy of "One Wrong Word"! Thank you Hank Phillippi Ryan, NetGalley and Forge Books for the opportunity. I'm giving "One Wrong Word" five stars because I didn't want it to end and I want more! Preorder now so you can start reading on February 6th!
Arden’s life is in PR, specializing in crisis management. But what do you do when it’s your life in crisis? One client’s lie and her career is over - with one chance to redeem herself. Cordelia’s life is hostage to public opinion regarding her husband’s car accident. Arden needs to redeem Cordelia’s image to reclaim her own career. Prosecutor Monelle wants justice. But what is truth - and does that have any bearing on the intersection of their lives?
From the opening in a courtroom waiting room to the surprising conclusion, this rollercoaster of a story never lets up. Narration from multiple points of view adds to the tension of whose perspective can be trusted. Twists and turns in this timely take on public perception, cancel culture and the power to spin opinions kept me turning pages. Hank Phillipi Ryan is a must-read author for me, and this book reinforces that status. Highly recommended.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an ARC. All opinions expressed are my own.
One Wrong Word is another Hank Phillippi Ryan suspense that will keep you guessing until the end . The twists and turns leave you confused on which way it is going to end .
Arden is forced to leave her job that she loves when she is accused of impropriety with a client and finds herself in the middle of a nightmare with the last client her boss gives her. While trying to clear her client’s image up after he is ruled not guilty of a crime , she gets entangled in the mess of his and his wife’s lives.
Ms. Ryan thrills yet again with this book.
Thanks NetGalley and publisher for a copy for my opinion.
