This is the second book in the Jordan Manning series. I read the first As The Wicked Watch with a bookclub and enjoyed my reading and the author chat a lot, so I was quite obviously eager to read this second installment.
But I do think that this book can be read as a standalone.
This was a good mystery and I still love Jordan and the reporter as a sleuth angle but admittedly, I enjoyed the first much more. This was an entertaining read which I didn't love nor hate.
Jordan's desk at the TV station in Chicago receives a call from Shelly Biltmore with news that her sister Marla is missing. Is this a story? Could this be a new big story ? Or is Marla just taking a couple of days off ? This part was my favorite part of the story and it shows Tamron Hall knows exactly what she is talking about in terms of how stories are selected and made.
Marla was in the middle of many life changes including a custody battle and she had just moved back home.
But when Jordan comes to town to investigate Marla's disappearance she discovers there are quite a few layers to this story.
I read this book as a buddy read with
@andrea.c.lowry.reads and it is always so fun for mysteries and thrillers. I love reading with someone who reads at the same time because we can discuss the ending !
I received an eARC in exchange for my honest review.
Thanks to @Netgalley and @williammorrowbooks.
Another bingeable and quick read about Chicago's up and coming investigative journalist, Jordan Manning. More and more people are trying to contact Jordan for help with their cases. When Jordan hears about the missing mother from Indiana who no one is looking for but her sister, she knows she has her new case. But with her star on the rise, is it really the time to chase faint leads out of state or should she sit in the anchor chair? And Jordan continues to make questionable decisions about her love life, this time dumbing herself down to make a man feel more important. Jordan! You are too good for that!!
A great series where we get to watch a professional and extraordinary yet relatable woman figure out her life choices, wrestle with ethical dilemmas, enjoy some fun nights out, and make terrible romantic decisions while solving a mystery with compassion and wisdom.
I'm a bit late getting this review written, sorry.
Ms Hall's newest book offers readers a new twist on an all too common situation in America - fighting couples splitting up, the effect on the children and one of the spouses disappearing. What makes this book unique is the actual "who carries the plot forward" - instead of it being driven by law enforcement officers, a private investigator, or a similar character, the vehicle in this case is a TV news reporter. So, did Mom run or did something sinister happen to her?
Not my favorite book/genre but it was pretty good. Because I am not a fan of tv/tv news, I probably was less interested in the book than someone who is. That being said, the book should probably rate 4-stars, not the 3-stars I've given it.
4.5/5
Even though we are only just done with book 2, I am a huge fan of the Jordan Manning series. Tamron Hall does such a great job with these books and Jordan's character and I loved Watch Where They Hide even more than As the Wicked Watch, so no sophomore slump here. In this installment, Jordan gets involved in the disappearance of a missing mother, and it is a story that will surely pull at your heartstrings. Hall does not shy away from raw subject matters, and she writes about abuse in a very emotional and real way. I think this is why I love the FMC so much, and besides her smarts, she is just an all-around seeker of the truth, which I can't help but love.
Susan Dalian is back as the narrator for the audiobook, and I am SO glad they haven't switched to someone else. She is my favorite person to be the voice of Jordan and she really lets the emotion of all of the characters shine through in her narration. Watch Where They Hide ended up being a twisty little read that left me gasping. Triggers will abound for some readers, so I would be sure to check them out on StoryGraph before reading. Even though this is a series book I think it is just fine as a standalone, which is a lot coming from someone who MUST read series books in order all of the time with no exceptions. This is a thought-provoking and heavier read with a light dose of humor that I would recommend to fans of suspense, drama, the author herself, and intense crime fiction.
Continue to love the depiction of reporting and newscasting. It's obvious that Tamron brings her real world experience into each story, and it's fascinating to read those insider details. I wanted a little more carry over from the first book related to the world building and Jordan's relationships with friends, family and colleagues. I feel invested in Jordan as a character and am excited to watch her story grow in future books.
This was a slog. It felt like there wasn’t enough to make a whole book out of so a lot of filler scenes were added. A lot of Jordan on the phone with women crying. I think her first book was better. I did not expect the conclusion of the case and that saved it from the 2 star dungeon.
I thought the second Jordan Manning book was good, but not better than the book 1. Investigative Reporter Jordan Manning is investigating the missing mother at the urgent request of her sister who believes her brother-in-law has harmed her. Jordan is having a mid life crisis as her best friend is getting married to the love of her life and Jordan is consumed with the past and possible regret of letting the one guy she cannot get our of her head out of her mind. Jordan isn't convinced that the made a mistake, does she want the career or family or both. Does she want to be a reporter or anchor so much has her distracted while investigating within a tri-state area of Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky. I thought it started out really good and then kind of fizzled out to an ending.
Jordan is an investigative reporter seeking out the cause of a missing person - a mother that was last seen dropping off her child at school. The mother recently separated had moved back to her hometown seeking escape. When the local pd couldn’t track her down her sister reached out to Jordan at the tv station. What follows is a mystery that sends Jordan to a seek out the missing young mother. Thanks to NetGalley for the read.
Tamron Hall. A true queen and entrepreneur in the realm of entertainment.
I was very lucky to have received the ARC of this book. I must admit that I did not read her first book but, luckily, that did not deter from the ability to enjoy this book and Jordan Manning's character.
It's hard not to imagine Jordan to be similar to Tamron, considering their backgrounds. Jordan Manning is an investigative reporter who tends to lean too far into leads and risk her own safety. In this book, she is met by a woman who is seeking answers on her sister's disappearance. Jordan follows the leads and unearths a hidden conspiracy.
Overall, the book is a good read. It is a little slow moving in the beginning but the ending makes up for it.
Watch Where They Hide is a fantastic reintroduction to Jordan Manning and this book was really enjoyable. I loved how passionate the main character is and how relentless she is throughout the story. The story is tightly plotted and all plot threads are resolved in the end which I appreciated as a reader. I hope there will be more books in the series. Thank you to NetGalley and William Morrow for the e-arc.
This is part two of the Jordan Manning series. I read the first book and enjoyed it, it is not necessary to read it in order to understand Watch Where They Hide.
Jordan has progressed in her career and now has her own news segment, Justice Jordan, at Channel 8. This is how she gets involved in Marla Hancock’s missing persons case. Marla’s sister seems to be the only one concerned that foul play is involved and desperately tries to contact Jordan.
The book starts out slow and didn’t get interesting until the last few chapters. I wish the twist would have happened sooner in the book and kept the momentum going until the end,
The few tidbits thrown in about Jordan’s personal life seemed out of place. I almost wish her friend’s wedding, her ex & new love interest would have been left out. It’s like Hall added it to make Jordan seem relatable but it wasn’t fleshed out and made her more unlikable.
Thank you Netgalley & the publisher for this ARC. This is my honest review.
I love the Jordan Manning series and I hope there will be many more books to come. I love Jordan’s investigative instinct and she never gives up until she solves the case. This story grabbed me from the very beginning and I had to know what happened. I definitely look forward to more from this series!
Tamron Hall is back with the newest book about reporter Jordan Manning. I liked the mystery case about a missing woman. Jordan takes some unconventional methods to get the story out.
While this book kept my attention, it seemed a little disconnected. The main storyline line about Marla was good. The other parts about the man in the courthouse and Lin& Nate seemed like fillers.
I also didn't like the ending. There was so much build-up about this case, and it just seemed rushed at the end. I'll still read anything Tamron writes, but this wasn't my favorite.
In exchange for my honest review I received an ARC from NetGalley and William Morrow. Watch Where They Hide is the second book in the Jordan Manning series. Where the Wicked Watch the first book was definitely Tamron Hall's better work. Watch Where They Hide had me waiting for the hook the entire book. It was just subpar. Jordan is an investigative reporter who is trying to locate a missing woman. I was very disappointed that this book wasn't what I was expecting because I've been waiting to read it since I read the first book.
I wanted to love this book because I love Tamron Hall and I enjoyed the first book. However, Book2 of the Jordan Manning series is rather dull to be quite honest. I totally understand that all thrillers aren’t created equal, and authors don’t have to subscribe to a myriad of unnecessary plot twists & turns throughout a story for shock value. Though that style of storytelling usually keeps readers engaged at the very least. I found it extremely difficult to care about anything that was happening in this book! Even though the book is well written, and the author is very intentional with her writing. There was no connection to any of the characters for me. (Besides feeling empathetic for the children)
Additionally, the Jordan character feeds into the stereotype that extremely successful Black Women are often lonely and unwed. Like it’s either a prominent career or family, but “they” can’t have both!(sigh) Even though we see her invite Nate to attend the event at the end of the book, it felt like it was more out a of desperation, versus an authentic interest. Everything about her and Nate felt forced. Lastly, I do think the author is amazing and I truly appreciate her writing style, I just hoped for a little more action and relatability with the characters. Unfortunately this 2nd book in the Jordan Manning series fell short. However, I’d definitely recommend this book to any reader interested in a good ole “whodunnit” story!! Let me know what you think in the comments!!
Thanks to #netgalley and the publisher for my approval
Thank you to Net Galley for this ARC. Oh my this book was so good. I enjoyed the first book and couldnt wait for this release. This book is a great mystery that follows Jordan Manning who is looking for a missing mother and seeking to uncover the truth. My goodness this was perfect!
They say to write what you know/love, which rings true with the Jordan Manning novels. You can feel Tamron Hall’s passion in her writing. The amount of depth and detail she puts into Jordan’s character, as well as the culture and behind the scenes intricacies of television news is palpable. While those are aspects I highly admire, the detail can sometimes take away from the thrill of the story. In the book summary, it mentions being “an edge-of-your-seat thriller”, and personally while the story was good, I never felt it was unputdownable.
Although this is the second novel in the series, it can be read as a standalone. 3.5 ⭐️ rounded down
Thank you to NetGalley & William Morrow for the opportunity to read this digital ARC. All opinions are my own.
Investigative reporter Jordan Manning isn’t just your ordinary reporter. She has added to her investigating and reporting skills by helping those in need. Requests from her audience, desperate for her help, never went unanswered. When Marla Hancock, the victim of an abusive husband, went missing, leaving her children behind, her sister Shelly contacted Jordan for help in trying to locate her after she was unable to get the full support of the local police department.
Jordan was successful in solving murders using her skills as a reporter, and her followers knew they could contact her for help. After Marla’s sister Shelly contacted her for help in finding Marla, Jordan moved full steam ahead, risking her job by taking time off to find Marla. She soon had no idea what she had gotten herself into. She found herself buried in lies and scandals. Someone in Marla’s family knew the truth, but even though her continued investigation put her life in danger, Jordan refused to stop until she found out the truth.
An explosive, fast-moving story that will be difficult to put down.
I loved her first Jordan Manning book and this one is equally as good. Good story and well developed characters. Intriguing through the final page.
I truly wanted this to suck me and and spit me out but I was so bored I had to stop. I really didn’t care how it was going to end.
