I loved the narration! I always appreciate a good narrator, one that helps you envision the book as you’re listening to it. There are some narrators who make me love the audiobook more than the physical. This narrator is in that camp. This was a great story, but I’m impressed most with the narration.
Really loved the audio version of this, though warning - there are lots of travels through time & several characters involved, so be prepared to really pay attention so you don't miss anything!
"Leave the Lights On" was definitely not what I was expected, and I loved every minute of it! The West Virginia scene setter was also a pleasant surprise. Lots of twists & turns, mysterious characters and multiple story arcs all came together for one thrilling conclusion. Whether you grab the hardback or listen in to the audio version, this read from Liv Andersson is definitely a perfect choices for the spooky nights of October!
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Leave the Lights On by Liv Andersson, an audiobook narrated by Mia Barron was like a mystery suspense novel. There were some parts where I was confused about what was going on. Then slowly, piece by piece story started to make sense. There was some good manipulation and I didn't expect the main twist which is always a good thing :)
In general, I enjoyed this story and will explore other books by this author.
Beatrice and Josh have been married for 10 years but Beatrice knows that Josh has another woman and a kid but she decides to carry on with "the perfect marriage" picture. In general, Beatrice doesn't want to attract attention as she has secrets that she wants to keep safe. But things start to get complicated as there’s an explosion at the local elementary school playground, and a two-year-old boy is abducted. Really soon Beatrice will realize that she is the only one who can solve this case.
Thank you, NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for this fantastic book!
Thank you to Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read Leave the Lights on by Liv Andersson.
Liv Andersson is a superb writer! This book was very well written. The narrator, Mia Barron, did a wonderful job.
After reading the description, I was very eager to read it. However, it was not what I expected. From the description, I expected the storyline to focus more on Beatrice, her husband, and his other family. It focuses more on Beatrice and her past. There was a lot of different things happening in the book. I found some of it to be unnecessary. I found my mind wandering, because of the lack of interest, and I found it necessary to go back and replay some parts.
I believe the storyline had a lot of potential. But, it did not deliver.
A good story but with a little humph missing to warrant 5 stars. Still, enjoyed listening to the audiobook version and would recommend it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for letting me review this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
I found this story to be utterly gripping! I stayed up way too late trying to finish this book and I have brain fog today because of it. But it was worth it. I was very invested in the story, the characters, and how this would all come together. The ending was a shocker and I'm still chewing on it all. I enjoyed the tension, the good pacing, the red herrings, and the arc of Beatrice's/Emma's growth and stunting in equal measure. Perhaps most satisfying was Luke's ending.
This book was really different from anything I have read recently and I was very captivated throughout the entirety. We are reading present time where some children start to go missing in a nice town and the past of the lead character that also had some twists and turns. Ultimately we see how the past and present come together at the end and it’s not what I expected. I didn’t know what was going to happen until the very end and I love books when I can’t predict an ending. The writing was detailed and there was some really cool history about the location that was also nice to read. I am giving this book 4 stars because I really liked it but still had some questions at the end.
Beatrice knows that her husband Josh has another life. When a young boy is abducted from their local school, Josh tries to hide his connection, not realizing that Beatrice already knows that he is Josh's son. This book sounded so good. It started off really well too but around halfway, it started going off script and into so many different directions that I struggled to keep up. Will keep a lookout for more by this author though as I did enjoy her writing style.
This author can write like no other! 4.5 stars.
I immediately requested this book as soon as I saw it was coming out because I loved the author's last book, Little Red House.
Emma is a young social worker who was kidnapped and brainwashed by a family who convinces her the government is after them. She manages to escape and reclaim her life, but it always on the run because they always seem to find her. Nearly 20 years later, she is settled down, married, and living her life under a different name, but once again the family finds her.
This book is extremely well written. The only complaint I can think of is that I wanted more. Since there are two timelines, we see a bit about Emma's past life and her current one. It felt too fast to me that Emma became complacent with her kidnappers. I was fascinated by that storyline and wanted an entire book on just that piece of the story, ending with Emma's escape.
I did not see the plot twist coming, but looking back, the book gave just enough tidbits of detail that it made sense. On the topic of wanting more, I would have liked to see the ending parsed out a little more with more detail on what happened.
Overall, this is a fantastic read!
Thank you to Netgalley and Dreamscape Media for this audiobook in exchange for my honest review.
This book had a lot more potential that was unrealized than it did actual storyline. With a past involving kidnapping and insane conspiracy theorists and a present with renovating an old insane asylum, things could have gone far deeper. Somehow what could have been a deeply psychological thriller somehow remained surface-level.
It was interesting enough to keep listening and enjoy some twists and turns, but it could have pushed harder!
Too 'tin foil hat' for me. I read for entertainment and in today's culture, reading about crazy government conspiracy believers is not enjoying. I simply need to wander onto social media to read that stuff.
I'd have much rather the book delve more into Ross Island, which was a former asylum. Far more interesting to me.
Mia Barron narrates the audiobook. I am not familiar with her work, and I can't say it was memorable. Maybe I was too distracted by the plot to notice.
I received an audio copy in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this audiobook. The narrator did a great job bringing the story to life and keeping my attention throughout the whole book. This is my first read from Andersson and I will definitely be reading more from her. I thought she did a great job creating a suspenseful multidimensional plot without making it too over the top. I really enjoyed hearing the story through Beatrice’s POV and like that there were past and present storylines happening within the story. Everyone in this town had secrets of their own and it helped to keep me guessing on who was behind the torment to Beatrice. Although as the ending neared I was able to figure out who this person was the ending took a turn I was not expecting and left me wanting more!
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC of Leave The Lights On. I REALLY enjoyed this book. I was held in suspense about who was behind all the strange things happening until the very end and ultimately that is what you want from a psychological thriller.
This book is about Beatrice and her husband who live in a beautiful house, with great jobs running and owning a huge company in Maine. Both are holding onto some large secrets that are unable to be hidden for much longer. How will they cope when everything starts to come crashing down?
I gave this book a 4/5 as I really did enjoy the story and the plot but at times wanted to skip whole paragraphs as they felt like they were waffling on. However, in other sections of the book, for example some of the conversations between Beatrice and her husband I thought ‘surely there’s more to say than this’ and felt like some points were completely glazed over, this gave me the feeling that sections were rushed. If the interactions between other characters felt more real life this would have been a 5 for sure.
I enjoyed reading this book, if you want an easy to read psychological thriller, where you don’t have to think too much, this one is for you.
I have mixed feelings about this book. It was a good listen however I was frustrated with the characters. The beginning was kinda slow but the story does pick up but then it abruptly ends.
Thank you Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for a copy of this audiobook.
This book has me a little confused on how to feel. I had a hard time getting into. The whole storyline from the past didn’t make sense. There was not enough evidence for me to believe Gabe was charming, charismatic, manipulative enough to flip Emma and get her to believe that whole story. I was approved for the audio and ebook copy of this and after having a hard time getting into the ebook, I tried listening and it was a lot more enjoyable. While a lot of the plot was wildly absurd it was still a fun story to listen to that I wanted to keep listening for the mystery to be solved
This was an epic mystery thriller!
Oh my god! I mean i knew it was going to be when i read the synopsis but i couldn’t have expected all of this.
Like the levels the author went, the reveals, turns and twists, the mind of mastermind woman, the family drama..
all of it was just chef’s kiss. I am pretty sure i stared at the wall for 20 min at least while i was listening to it.
It is a totally unexpected unique thriller that will leave an impact on the people who’ll love it.
5/5
What if you found out your husband has another family? Then you found out that his two year old son from that other family is now missing? Now you are one of the prime suspects.
In this suspenseful thriller set in Cape Morgan, Maine, Beatrice Wicker is faced with this dilemma. It is difficult for her to confront her cheating husband when she has a troubled past and secrets of her own.
This novel was smartly written and revealed the protagonist’s tragic past and why her past began invading her new charmed life. This story had lots of shocking moments and plot twists, although I found the main character to be naive and I felt she was making incredibly stupid decisions.
This was the perfect book to read on audio. The story does switch from past to present but was very easy to follow. The narrator was an excellent voice actor.
Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the Advanced Readers Copy. #LeavetheLightsOn #NetGalley
First and foremost, a large thank you to NetGalley, Liv Andersson, and Dreamscape Media for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.
In the world of thrillers, those of a psychological nature tend to be my favourite. Keeping the reader on the edge of their seat while they delve deeper into the story is a sure way to provide a great deal fo excitement for the attentive reader. Liv Andersson does just that with this piece, as she formulates a strong story on the surface but adds the impact of a secondary, and darker, tale with connections to the primary plot. When a small child goes missing, Beatrice Wicker takes notice. This child has a horrible way of reminding Beatrice of the issues within her marriage. While the hunt for the child and their kidnapper continues, Beatrice remembers an event from her past that she hopes to keep secret. However, that secret could all be revealed too soon and the reason for the kidnapping may not be what everyone is thinking. Andersson does well to keep the reader engaged throughout with a great ending.
Life in Cape Morgan, Maine is as peaceful as it could be, which Beatrice Wicker has enjoyed since arriving. Living in a massive home on the coast with her husband, Josh, there is noting that Beatrice could want more. As Beatrice begins making plans to turn an abandoned asylum into a captivating art retreat, she is happy to see things coming to fruition. Nothing can derail her, even that Josh will occasionally sneak off to see his other family, something that no one knows about and Beatrice chooses to ignore.
While he thinks himself sly and able to muffle it all, Josh is completely unaware that Beatrice knows about his indiscretion and hopes to keep it that way. Beatrice is also harbouring a deep secret from her past, which has had her running from many of the small towns in which she lives. Should it all come out, the utopian life she’s become accustomed to could come crashing down.
After an explosion leads to the disappearance of a young boy, the community is in a panic. Beatrice knows that this is Josh’s son, but remains calm in hopes that he will admit the truth and be able to panic or grieve. Yet, Josh remains stoic and does not tip his hand, which only angers Beatrice more. While they watch others in the community comb the area, Josh and Beatrice are stuck in this circular waiting game, each unsure what they other knows.
The hunt to find little Oliver is exacerbated when a clue turns up one day outside the family home. As Beatrice tries to brush it off, she is left to wonder if her own secret is about to come out, which could ruin things and force her to admit that she is not as pristine as she lets on. A struggle to find the boy, trap the kidnapper, and yet keep the truth from spilling out is all part of this thrilling psychological book that keeps the reader flipping pages well into the night.
Liv Andersson makes a glaring impact on the genre with this piece, sure to shake loose many of the cobwebs for the passive reader. The story is well-constructed, strengthened by a strong narrative core. As it moves at a brisk and yet reasonable pace, there are characters who develop and find their own footing throughout. The story uses some of these central characters to drive things along, though it is the essence of the secrets that both Beatrice and Josh keep that provides the greatest impetus. Plot development is strong and finds itself merging with every passing moment, keeping the reader on their toes as things take a turn for the worse. How will Beatrice face the truth of her past? Will Josh be able to play the role of protective father that he wants? Who is eyeing the children of the community as part of their larger game? All these answers can be found within the pages of this book, though Liv Andersson does not allow the reader to meander through this story.
Kudos, Madam Andersson, for a great and impactful read. I will have to look into some of your other work.
Leave The Lights On tells two different stories. Firstly we meet Beatrice, who is married to Josh and is spending her time converting an abandoned asylum into an artist's retreat. Then we meet Emma, a social worker who ends up being kidnapped and forced into bombing the senate.
The story flits between these two different timelines and, before long, we work out how the two are connected. I always enjoy books that work in this way as I like trying to figure out how the timelines connect and piecing it all together.
This book has it all: kidnapping, bombs, espionage, relationship issues. The premise of the book was really interesting and I enjoyed seeing how it all unfolder.
My thanks to NetGalley and the Publishers for sending me this ARC in return for an honest review.

I’m not sure where to start. The story was quite a mixed up. 😫
Started when Beatrice was like a social worker looking after for a boy name josh. When she was too attached on him, the dad abducted her . As he was some kind of working in a government. Then she got Stockholm syndrome at some point. Living with this man, his wife and the kid. When she escapes, she hide her identity but she has a past herself.
She then got married to a wealthy man who’s kid got kidnapped, and another person got kidnapped too.
It’s all a echaos😆 but then it’s just a little surprise at the end who actually did this that’s why I stayed for even though my head is all around .
Anyway, good ending. Just the mixup of the story was all out of place.
