A cute book for the beginning reader. KG girl and I had fun reading about catching a unicorn and little brother liked the fun pictures.
I like this one better than Pup and Dragon: How to Catch a Dinosaur. Reminds me of the How to Catch book series by Adam Wallace, but with Pup and Dragon as the main characters. I like the message that the day was spent with a best friend and that friends help each other. I think kids will enjoy it.
Pup and Dragon are an unlikely team and hilarity ensues when they spot a unicorn flying over the zoo and aim to help the kids catch it! But who, really, is helping whom?
Kids will definitely gravitate towards this book due to the bright colors and illustration styles! Those that have enjoyed the previous Pup and Dragon books will like this one as well. I do, however, feel like the story lines are getting to be a bit repetitive. I would encourage any future Pup and Dragon books to branch out a little bit.
This was a cute graphic novel. It is typical of the series. That’s neither good nor bad. It’s a quick jump for graphic novel leaders with adorable illustration and a friendship between the dog and a dragon that makes for a grand time.
The book of two best friend trouble makers having so much fun at the zoo chasing a unicorn.
I thought it was a cute read. I love how the trap would be set up and they would think it's so easy to catch him but he always missed the trap.
I really enjoy these how to catch books.
This was a pretty fun book to read. The school kids are taking a trip to the zoo, and while there Pup and Dragon hope to catch the elusive Unicorn. Not only do they end up ruining some traps the kids set up, but it seems the animals in the zoo are helping this creature not get caught. Yet as this adventure comes to an end these friends are okay with how things turned out. Fans of the previous Pup and Dragon books will want to pick this one up.
Kids love graphic novels. This one has fewer words than middle grade graphic novels which makes it a great transition book for kids. The story was cute and will keep the interest of most students.
My 6 year old really enjoyed this title. She enjoyed the story line as well as the illustrations. Thank you so much for the opportunity to read and review in exchange for an honest review.
Loved by both my younger girls and now they are asking for more!! My library readers just cannot get enough of graphic novels so I always try anything new that I can. This one will definitely find it's way to my school library shelves.........
I was provided a free advanced copy of this from @netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
Pup and Dragon are on another adventure this time to try to catch a unicorn at the zoo! Along the way they attempt different ways to catch the unicorn with varying degrees of success, while meeting lots of new friends throughout the zoo!
The fun colors and pictures definitely help keep the kids attention. The message of messing up and trying again was a good one for kids to understand that not all our ideas turn out the way we expect! I didn't appreciate some of the dialogue, some of it seemed a bit snarky and a bit on that edge between ok and not what I'd want my daughter to repeat. Nothing went over the line, but it felt a bit too close for me, for a kids book. 🤷🏻♀️
It is set to be published tomorrow (7 May).
Pup and Dragon: How to Catch a Unicorn by Alice Walstead is another fantastic story that my kids adored.
They are actually starting to read themselves and really enjoyed reading this one.
The pages were colorful and kept my daughter’s attention throughout.
Adorable and entertaining. The pictures in this book are bright and colorful! The story is wonderful and the pictures fit perfectly.
Thank You NetGalley and Sourcebooks Wonderland for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was an all around super cute book for young readers. my kids really enjoyed it! The illustrations are also super cute.
Thank you netgalley.
It was cute enough for a kids book. I liked the drawings. The story was a little lacking but it was cute in the end. Nice moral to the story at the end.
I received an electronic ARC from SOURCEBOOKS Kids through NetGalley.
Elementary readers love this series. They will appreciate the continued adventures of Pup and Dragon as they chase a unicorn through the zoo. Readers get to see the overall picture of everything happening through the artwork while the dialogue focuses on Pup and Dragon's interactions and plans to help the kids catch the unicorn. In the end, Dragon learns an important lesson about friendship and sees how the zoo animals helped their friend escape each trap. He and Pup set off for home and look forward to their next adventure.
A light humorous read with important messages underneath. The artwork is bright and cheerful; it can be studied again and again for details about the story.
Thank you NetGallery and the publisher for the ARC. I read this to my kids, they laughed, asked questions and all round enjoyed this book. They thought the Zebra part was the funniest 😂 I recommend this book to parents who have younger kids both will enjoy reading this together.

I’ve never read any of the Pup and Dragon series prior to this. The cover was what got me intrigued and then reading the synopsis furthering that intrigue. Let me tell you something; even as an almost 30 year old adult, I loved this book. Even my husband who helped me read it to our daughter was laughing out loud to the shenanigans that Pup and Dragon got into.
This book makes me want to read all of the others and to purchase this one when it comes out in May. It’s so colorfully illustrated and the perfect introduction to manga/comic books. I really enjoyed this book and I will definitely be buying it for my daughter as well as my nieces and nephews.
Pup and Dragon: How to Catch a Unicorn was cute with great lessons for kids. There were times when I felt it skipped from one scene to the other without transitions, but overall it was a good book for young readers.
As with the previous books in the series, this was a really bright and colourful graphic novel with sharp outlines and well-defined artwork. I appreciate that, and I think it resonates well with kids who are transitioning from picture books to a genre with a few more words.
I did find this very similar to How to Catch a Dinosaur, and that's probably not a bad thing given that it is themed. But I'm not convinced that this is also the best way to keep readers engaged at the target age. It's not quite like the board books and picture books which are for younger readers, and I found that this one was too close to the previous book. The How to Catch an Elf felt different somehow than the last two books.
The message in the end of this book is really nice. I think it could have been broken out a bit more to be clearer, but I genuinely liked it as far as messages and lessons learned go.
That being said, it's still a fun read and works for the age group especially for those who are having some challenges with reading or just starting out. A good addition to the series overall. But I do kind of hope that the next book is a bit more diverse in the story.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was adorable and breathed new life to the how to catch books. My daughter loved this book and loved how it followed the original how to catch a unicorn book. She cannot wait for more of these books. The illustrations were so cute!
