I truly enjoyed 5 of the 6 stories in this collection. Only one fell a little flat for more where the others were genuinely terrifying.
The Pram by Joe Hill 5/5
Ankle Snatcher by Grady Hendrix 4.5/5
It Waits in the Woods by Josh Malerman 4/5
In Bloom by Paul Tremblay. 2/5
Best of Luck by Jason Mott 4/5
Big Bad by Chandler Baker 4/5
Thank you, NetGalley!
This Creature Feature features some of the most popular horror authors of today. I have read stuff from Grady Hendrix, Joe Hill, and Paul Tremblay but I was excited to drive into the other authors' work too.
The Pram by Joe Hill- (5 stars) This short story is dark and disturbing. Joe Hill never fails to make his work so gross but in a good way. I loved The Pram, it had some really disgusting scenes and a good plot.
Ankle Snatcher by Grady Hendrix- (4 Stars) This short story was fun and dark in typical Grady Hendrix fashion. I really liked his modern version of the boogeyman. I will be thinking of this short story next time I lay in bed.
In Bloom by Paul Tremblay- (3 Stars) This short story was way to scientific for my taste.
It Waits in the Woods by Josh Malerman- This was my least favorite of the 6 stories, I've tried to rea his work before but I don't vibe with it.
Big Bad by Chandler Baker- (4 Stars) This short story is heartbreaking and scary. I really liked the plot but I wish it was longer.
Best of Luck by Jason Mott- (4 Stars) I haven't read any thing by Jason Mott but I will now.
A decent collection of short stories great for spooky season
Some I definitely enjoyed more than others.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for a chance to read and review these short stories.
Ahhh what a great collection! Each of these authors is wonderful in my opinion so I was Very excited to see this collection here! The perfect set of stories for spooky season. Definitely recommend!
This was a creepy collection of short horror stories from several popular authors. Overall I enjoyed the collection, however, only one story really stuck with me. I really enjoyed Ankle Snatcher by Grady Hendrix. He is an auto buy and auto read author for me. As a whole I found most of the stories to be a little underwhelming and short. If you like short creature horror stories I would pick this up for sure.
Thank you to the Publisher and NetGalley for an early copy of this collection
Creature Feature by Joe Hill, Grady Hendrix, Josh Malerman, Paul Tremblay, Jason Mott, and Chandler Baker was AMAZING! I was blown away to see many of my favorite horror writers collaborate to create this book and boy it did not disappoint. From spooky baby carriages to monsters under the bed to haunted woods and everything else in between, this collection of short stories will creep you out. It is amazing how truly terrifying short stories can be and these authors are the masters of the genre. My favorite work was Ankle Snatcher... the title says it all.
I received a review copy of this book from the author/publisher through NetGalley for my honest review. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
This collection of short stories from some of my favorite authors was just the thing I needed to cure the long reading slump I was having. Each story completely pulled me in right from the beginning. My only complaint is that In Bloom by Paul Treblay started off so slow, I almost skipped it.
This was the perfect read for the start of the halloween season. The stories were all very unique and I thought they were all very good. The Pram and It Waits in the Woods were both 3 star books for me. I really liked Ankle Snatcher, Best of Luck and In Bloom and I gave them all 4 stars. Hands down my favorite was Big Bad. It was scary, and fast paced and kept me guessing what would happen the whole time. I can't wait to read more books by Chandler Baker.
Just in time for spooky season. This collection will give you all of the feels. I love most of the authors that is why I gave this one a try.
4.5 stars
I read Ankle Snatcher. I wish it was a full novel because the concept was very cool! I like the retelling of the boogeyman.
Creature Feature is a set of six short horror stories released just in time for spooky season. This series is much more than the traditional vampire and werewolf tales. I enjoyed Ankle Snatchers the most. It was a creative twist on the classic Boogyman story.
Creature Feature is a collection of six short ebooks by best selling horror authors, all available on Kindle Unlimited.
The Pram by Joe Hill is a wonderfully creepy piece of folk horror. Willy borrows an old stroller to wheel his groceries home along a wooded trail from the store to his new house. The thing is falling apart, but works well enough for the task. Then he starts hearing faint cooing and rustling sounds from inside the basket. I loved this one right up until the abrupt ending and wish the author had chosen to develop it into a full length novel.
Ankle Snatcher by Grady Hendrix is creepy and atmospheric and, again, I found the ending sudden and unsatisfying.
It Waits in the Woods by Josh Malerman got off to a slow start, but once things got going, I was almost afraid to keep reading. Kids tell stories of a bridge in the woods, an impossible structure that leads nowhere, that's never seen in the same place twice. And of a faceless monster that stalks through the trees. Brenda's sister went missing in those woods years ago and now Brenda is headed in to find her.
In Bloom by Paul Tremblay features a story within a story, with a journalist interviewing a local about the toxic algae blooms that get worse every year. The author conjures up some really creepy images that I'm not likely to forget any time soon.
Best of Luck is my least favorite of the stories.
Big Bad by Chandler Baker. another of my favorites from this collection, explores the relationships of a family living in an isolated farmhouse. Tempers are flaring and family secrets are about to be revealed to everyone.
This is a wonderful group of stories. I've enjoyed each and every one of them. This is a great read for the Halloween season.
The Pram by Joe Hill. I love his writing and I loved the story. I think it would make a great movie.
Ankle Snatcher by Grady Hendrix. This was a really fun read. I'll think twice about wondering around in the dark.
It Waits in the Woods by Josh Malerman. A great read. Bridges and monsters. Fun fun fun!
In Bloom by Paul Tremblay I thought this was the weakest of the stories. The ending wasn't much of one.
Best of Luck by Jason Mott. This was a good read. Not really scary but well written. I will read this author again.
Big Bad by Chandler Baker. Wow! Super good story that was fast paced and scary. Right up my alley. I want to read more from this author.
Thank you, Netgalley and publishers, for giving me the opportunity to read the ARC of this collection. I received the ARC a day before publishing, and since the stories are rated separately on Goodreads, I'll leave my review here, the story I liked the most.
The Pram - 2 stars
I liked the writing, but it was too long, and I was kind of annoyed with the protagonist. The story was not at all scary. The pacing was too slow.
Ankle Snatcher - 3.5 stars
I liked this one, but some parts were kind of slow for me. Still, I had a good time reading it.
It Waits in the Woods - 3.5 stars
Unique plot, I liked it. Some parts were also kind of dragging a bit.
In Bloom - 3 stars
Too slow for me. It was okay, not really scary.
Best of Luck - 4.5 stars
I thought this would be the story I liked the most, not until I read the last one. This was fun to read, fast-paced and a real page-turner.
Big Bad - 5 stars
This was the perfect short story for me. It was scary, creepy, fast-paced, and I had a blast reading it. I felt like I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. The ending caught me off guard, it had a few twists which I never saw coming. Loved it so much.
I love short stories; make them spooky and I’m definitely in. This is the perfect companion for getting in the spooky spirit for fall. Each story had its own quirky fear. For those who still don’t like to leave a foot dangling over the foot of the bed… ankle snatcher is for you!!
Absolutely loved this. Some great masters in horror with short stories that were all captivating at so different. I loved Jason Mott’s story like the imagery was so gross and so good.
Just a whole bunch of great authors doing what they do best. I'm a sucker for a good spooky story. This felt like Goosebumps for adults. I especially enjoyed Grady Hendrix, Joe Hill, and Paul Tremblay's stories.
This was such a fun series. I enjoyed all of them but the stand outs for me were Ankle Snatcher by Grady Hendrix and It Waits In The Woods by Josh Malerman.
The Pram by Joe Hill
A quick little story about the grief a father faces after a miscarriage. I enjoyed the set up of the little town and the new house. I also really liked how the story was told from the father’s point of view. Most stories are told from the mother’s so this was an interesting take. I felt my self wanting a little bit more from the ending but overall I really liked this story. If you love creepy kid books you will love this short story!
3/5 Stars
Ankle Snatcher by Grady Hendrix
Ahhh I loved this one so much! What a fun take on the classic tale of the boogeyman. The opening scene hooked me right away. I would love to read a full length novel about the Ankle Snatcher! Highly recommend this short read. It’s perfect for spooky season.
4/5 Stars
It Waits In The Woods by Josh Malerman
At no surprise to me Josh Malerman has done it once again. This short story was everything I want from a creepy story in the woods. This is the kind of story you want to tell around a campfire. Absolutely terrifying. The audiobook was phenomenal and scary as hell.
5/5 Stars
In Bloom by Paul Tremblay
This is a true creature feature. Old school horror at its finest.
4/5 Stars
Best Of Luck by Jason Mott
This was such an interesting idea. The concept was truly fascinating. That ending. 😳
3/5 Stars
Big Bad by Chandler Baker
This is one of those short stories I wish was a full novel. This was so good. I wanted way more!
4/5 Stars
Overall I loved this short stories series. I hope Amazon does more horror ones in the future. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an arc copy in exchange for my honest review.
The six short stories were very fun. Some of the themes for monsters, werewolves, the bogeyman, and a few other surprises. I personally liked “the pram” by Joe Hill, the best, but “big bad” by Chandler Baker was also very good. It is great to read short stories by authors that I enjoy.
Thank you to Amazon Original Stories & NetGalley for the advanced copy of these short stories. #CreatureFeature #NetGalley
I cannot wait to dive into these on my Kindle. I recently downloaded and have consumed the first story in this saga and I'm obsessed.
