Leah and katelyn are friends…. Best friends from childhood. But are they really? They have so much jealousy and the story was confusing at times because it went back and forth from the women being besties to them hating each other. The characters were hard for me to care about and the plot was pretty predictable. This book just wasn’t for me. Thank you NetGalley for the advance digital copy.
This was a first time author for me, having never heard of her before I was intrigued as to whether she would become a new favourite. Unfortunately that wasn't the case.
Let's start with what I did like about this book. I enjoyed how the story jumps straight in, no real messing about. It was an easy, light read that didn't require any brain power. That's about it.
I wasn't a massive fan of the flashback chapters. I understand why they were there, but the story relied far too much on them to add depth and explanation of the plot.
The whole thing I found to be utterly predictable. There are no surprises, twists or reveals and unfortunately I found the whole thing a bit dull.
There are no likeable characters throughout and I found them all immature. Also the male characters are so 2D it made it all feel flat.
The plot felt daft and I wanted to reach into the book and tell them all to grow up. It also felt like overall, not a lot actually happens. I felt like I was going round in circles with no plot progression.
I would say this is more domestic fiction/suspense then anything else, so if that is something you are looking for you may enjoy this.
The cover is brilliant though.
The Day After the Party is a fast-moving story about family and redemption. It was highly suspenseful, and I was gripped until the end.
Parties are supposed to be fun, right? It’s full of drink, party food and good times – laughter and joy. But what happens when it all goes pear shaped? A memory lost of the entire night. A memory gone completely. Katelyn wakes up in a hospital bed after having an episode of Global Transient Amnesia. She has no recollection of the previous night at all and both her husband, Toby and her best friend, Leah are really worried about her. But luckily for us Nicole Trope turns an innocuous party into Katelyn’s worst nightmare.
Finding the right words to describe The Day After the Party is difficult and i want to do it justice. It’s tense, it’s taut, it has you on the edge of your seat, you get the wonderment of Australia and its sun kissed beaches, but you also get a story with heart and reconciliation. The author knows what she’s doing and transports you to the heart of the story – I need to make it a priority to read her other works, pronto. But there is so much more to the story.
Katelyn and Leah have been friends since they were six. Katelyn had a hard upbringing with her mother not being very present – she was an alcoholic who didn’t work and was often late to pick her up from school or not at all. Katelyn spent most of her life wishing she had a mother that was just there for her. Leah’s mother took her home on a day that Katelyn’s mother failed to pick her up and very quickly became part of the furniture. Throughout their years as friends there are many instances where Leah is insanely jealous at the things that Katelyn has – the attention of her mother, her ex-boyfriend, Tony, a beautiful daughter, a stunning home, and she feels that Katelyn appreciates none of it.
I wasn’t a fan of Leah; jealousy isn’t a nice colour on anyone, but Leah wore the immensely jealous friend like a second skin. I don’t know why people are like this, if you exude too much energy into concerning yourself with others lives yours is always going to be empty and meaningless.
Katelyn wakes up and although her memory has returned, she begins questioning her reality. When she receives a weird text message from Leah’s ex-husband and a gift that was possibly from her party stowed away under her bed makes her question everything she knows. Can she piece the night of the party together before her family falls apart? The Day After the Party is shock after shock and I loved it.
My first book by Nicole Trope, and it won’t be my last!
This is the story of two best friends, Katelyn and Leah. For Katelyn’s 36th bday they are having a huge party, which should be fun, but everything goes off the rails when Katelyn suddenly can’t remember anything.
Obviously, things happened at this party that were triggering for Katelyn, but does she really not remember them? That’s a question you’ll be asking yourself until the very end.
While the plot is not always believable, it’s fun! I couldn’t put this one down. I still have a few unanswered questions, but overall liked the book. Thank you to NetGalley, and the publisher, for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Day After the Party is a story about Katelyn a 36 year old wife and mother who suffered a temporary bout of amnesia following her birthday party. While she can't remember the events prior to her memory loss, three people who are closest to her remember everything....or do they?
I want to thank NetGalley, Bookouture, and Nicole Trope for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I am truly struggling with a review of this one. While I enjoyed this easy read, I just felt as though something was missing. Many times it seemed as though the chapters were repeating themselves. This made for some boring moments, when all I wanted was more "dirt". I was also not a fan of any of the characters. Even though they had relateable struggles, they all came off as whiny. I did enjoy trying to decipher what really happened. Overall, it wasn't a terrible book, but it was just average for me.
The Day After the Party had some interesting elements, but the story didn’t feel completely developed to me. The toxic relationship between two childhood friends could have been more dominant in the story instead of the repetitive discussions around the events of the party. I’m interested in reading more by this author, though. She has promise!
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC of this title.
An interesting look at the phenomenon of TAG (transient global amnesia) through lens of a quiet psychological thriller. A bit repetitive and no redeeming characters, the reader is nonetheless pulled along to figure out the deceit that occurred and the level of lies that are involved. A quick read, but definitely better options out there in the genre.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this advanced copy. One moment Kaitlyn is having fun at her 36th birthday party. The next minute, she wakes up in the hospital with no memory of what happened at the party. Is her husband lying? Did she do something terrible? This was a fast paced read, I love Nicole Trope books!
Nicole Trope writes such fun, quick, and entertaining novels! The Day After the Party is no different!
Katelyn has the perfect life…. Sort of. At least that’s how it looks to everyone looking in. The perfect marriage and family, how hard could it be? Katelyn struggles with motherhood and identity. When she wakes from a coma in the hospital following her birthday party, her husband is acting weird and so is her best friend. Katelyn can’t remember anything and the more she tries the more confused she becomes. As the story unravels, so does everyone’s lives in the process.
I found myself really relating to Katelyn. Her struggles with motherhood and professional and personal identity were very real and relatable. Trope does a good job of portraying what being a stay at home mom looks like and how it actually is for lots of women.
In true Trope fashion, this story was a wild, quick read! It kept my attention from start to finish and had my head spinning with all of the bombshells!
A big thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this ARC before it’s intended release date of October 30, 2023.
‘First…the cover is FANTASTIC!
Second…the story was so well done and it truly came to a place where BAM the twist you didn’t see coming that totally made this a great book!
This was a great book! It was easy to understand and one that I didn’t put down for 36 hours. The twists were fun and I loved the dual POV’s and timelines. Highly recommend. Many thanks to the publisher and to NetGalley for the ARC.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC (Advance Reader Copy) of The Day After the Party by Nicole Trope. When the book began, it was very reminiscent of a book I had just read and I thought "Not Again!" Fortunately it changed and became a new story for me. It was written with dual points of view from the two main characters in the novel. It also is written in a dual timeline as the past and the present merge together. Nicole Trope is easy to read and she includes many twists and turns in her writing. Overall, this book was very entertaining and I would highly recommend it to others. I gave it a 4 star rating.
The Day After the Party by Nicole Trope is a slow burning to fast paced thriller that I could NOT put down. I've already added it to my thriller cart for all my library locations!
ADDICTIVE!!! Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for granting me access to this book in exchange for an honest review.
What an emotional and darkly twisted psychological thriller that kept me guessing to the very end!! This is my first read by Nicole Trope and it did not disappoint! It has suspense, tension, drama, secrets, lies, jealousy, betrayals, many unexpected twists and turns, fast pacing, unique plot, rich character development and an ending that left me totally SPEECHLESS😶!!! You know that saying, I did not see that coming!?! Well, I could not believe what was happening and did not see that coming! Also, gotta love unreliable narrators🙃! So when you think you have it figured out, I suggest you think again🤔I was completely engrossed from the very beginning and could not stop reading because I had to know what happened! Everything I was hoping for and MORE!! I absolutely LOVED it so much and is another thriller to add to my favorite list for 2023!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Leah and Katelyn have been life long best friends since they were six years old. Now three decades later, they are still bff's and have no secrets between them. When Katelyn wakes up in the hospital with no memories of the night of her thirty-six birthday party she discovers she has been diagnosed with Global Transient Amnesia (TGA) that can be brought on by stress. She still has all her other memories just not the ones from her birthday party. Toby, her husband, says nothing happened at the party but Katelyn knows he is lying and hiding something. Even Leah seems to be acting strange and hiding details from her which causes Katelyn to be more suspicious. What really happened to make her lose her memory of that night? Better yet, is she faking the amnesia?
Overall, it is an entertaining and gripping domestic psychological thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat till the very last page! I cannot wait to read more books by this author and I highly recommend!!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂
I was given this book by NetGalley for an honest review-
Who would have thought a beautiful, successful girl who had everything our be so jealous of her friend who had a horrible childhood but now is happily married with a beautiful home and a beautiful daughter.
It’s katrlyne 37 birthday party but something happened - she’s in the hospital and can’t remember anything. No one will tell her what happened. What could have happened at the party? Why can’t she remember? Who can she trust?
I would regard this as an average domestic drama rather than a psychological thriller, but it has elements of both. The characters were well-defined to the extent that they ranged from the annoying to the obnoxious. I would generally give up when a story has so many unlikeable characters, but I kept reading, hoping they would suffer some unpleasant fate. I thought the story was slow, repetitive, and predictable but redeemed by nerve-wracking conflict and danger near the end. There was an afterword that I found lame. The cover is eye-catching.
The premise was intriguing, but its execution didn't work for me. It was told from two perspectives: Katelyn is hosting an elaborate 36th birthday party, and her best friend Leah is helping her prepare for the lavish event. Katelyn and Leah have been friends since they were both age six. Much of the story focuses on this friendship, with chapters going back and forth in time until the party's aftermath. I felt this detracted from a build-up of suspense and wondered how it would have worked with a more linear approach. Many friends and acquaintances are attending and anticipating an enjoyable evening. Katelyn's husband, Tony and his friend Aaron are also present. Aaron is Leah's ex-husband.
On the morning after the party, Katelyn wakes up in the hospital without remembering anything that occurred. The party is a total blank in her mind. She has been diagnosed with TGA, transient global amnesia. This rare condition can follow an alarming, stressful event, but the subject can recall things that happened earlier and can form new memories. She is overwhelmed by the dread that something awful occurred. Leah seems angry, and her husband, Toby, insists that nothing unusual occurred and everyone enjoyed the celebration.
Could Katelyn be pretending to have memory loss to protect herself from embarrassment? Why does her friend Leah seem distant, and why is Toby obviously lying to her? Did something so shocking and humiliating cause the memory loss?
This story is about a toxic friendship, obsession, jealousy, infidelity, lust, secrets, lies, and betrayals. Who can be trusted?
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an early electronic copy. The date of publication is October 30.
Took me a little while to get in to this book. It was ok, I didn't love it but did have to know what happened.
I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, it kept me interested. What happened on the night of the party? Who is involved with who? But on the other hand, the characters were unlikeable and the plot was a bit mixed up. The story ended quite abruptly and I was still left with questions unanswered. I wondered if a mistake has been overlooked, that will be fixed in the editing?
However I did find it was well written with the storyline going into the past and then forward again so we found out more about the relationship between the main characters.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC.
This was a good book and it was a quick read, there were a couple of twists I didn't see coming!
Katelyn is throwing herself a huge party for her 36th birthday! But Katelyn wakes up and doesn't remember any of her party. She also doesn't remember being taken to the hospital, but she's definitely there now. The doctor tells her that she had some type of temporary memory loss and she may never remember the events from the night before. Katelyn knows that something happened at her party, but she can't get her husband to tell her the truth. She doesn't even want to talk to her best friend, Leah, she's not sure why but she knows something happened between them. What will happen when Katelyn finally figures out the truth?
Katelyn and Leah have been best friends since the age of 6. They have shared secrets, family, and lovers over the span of their friendship. Leah secretly resents Katelyn for her perfect life she wishes she had. Leah’s resentment towards Katelyn comes to a head when she sees her doing something she shouldn’t be doing at her 36 birthday party. As the timeline jumps from past to present before and after the party, Leah’s insecurities about her life and her jealousy of Katelyn’s life intensifies. The secrets the two friends have kept from eachother come spilling out by the book’s end and lead to a dramatic finale.
Nicole Trope has made a name for herself in the domestic thriller genre. Her books are always entertaining, drama filled, and never disappoint in bringing an exciting ending to the plot. This book was no different and kept me engaged throughout. Trope does a wonderful job setting the plot and jumping back in forth from the past and present to develop the growing rift in Katelyn and Leah’s friendship. I did not see the ending coming and at first thought it was a bit cheesy, but I understood that Leah had hit her breaking point despite what she told Katelyn about moving forward, and the ending was her last desperate act to take what she thought should have been hers. All in all it was a solid 4 star read for me and I will recommend this one to friends.
