This was a slightly different pace this authors previous books I’ve read and whilst not one of my favourites still and enjoyable read.
I was initially very excited to read this book. The chapters seemed to drag on. The last 3-4 chapters were where it finally got interesting. I was very underwhelmed with this book that promised many twists.
If you like drama, suspense and a book with twists and turns, then this is for you
The relationship between Leah and Katelyn was a bizarre one from the start and continues to deteriorate as the story progresses.
I personally am not a fan of the timeline
jumps back and forth and for me it really ruined the book and made it harder to follow what was happening and to who!
I really did like all the twists and turns and not knowing how it was going to end with Leah, Katelyn, Aaron and Toby.
All in all, not a book for me with all of the timeline switches and changes in POV but still a good read.
"The Day After the Party" is an absolute gem of a psychological thriller, earning a solid 5 out of 5 stars from me. From the very first page, it had me hooked, unable to resist the temptation to turn page after page.
One of the highlights of this book is the character development, particularly with Kaitlyn. Her childhood experiences resonated with me, making her an instantly relatable and endearing character. I found myself deeply invested in her journey.
What sets this thriller apart is its unpredictability. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, the story took unexpected twists and turns that left me pleasantly surprised. It kept me on the edge of my seat, craving more.
Nicole Trope's storytelling prowess is undeniable, and after this captivating read, she has firmly secured a spot as one of my favorite authors. I'm eager to explore her other literary works and dive into more of her thrilling narratives. "The Day After the Party" is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a suspenseful, well-crafted psychological thriller.
Thank you Nicole Trope and NetGalley for an opportunity to get my claws on this e-book!
A really good psychological thriller which kept the suspense up right until the end. My sympathies for Leah and Katelyn kept swinging from one to the other throughout the whole story.
The Day After the Party is a fast, character driven read. This wasn’t so much a thriller but more of a domestic drama that speaks to the “grass is always greener” mindsets that begin to develop in any human being, but become toxic in friendships. I was quickly hooked and stayed up late to finish! One of the things I liked was how we got two different POV, one from Leah and one from Katelyn. The author does a fabulous job of switching between both of their “minds” without the “Leah” chapter that so often happens in other novels. You really get a play by play of how both characters are handling a situation. We also get a timeline view so we see how their friendship started and how it progressed. Overall, I enjoyed the book and while I have read Nicole Trope novels in the past, this just cements for me that she is a must read!
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
"The Day After the Party" by Nicole Trope left me with mixed feelings and a somewhat forgettable impression. Having previously enjoyed Trope's "The Family Across the Street" with a four-star rating, my expectations were set higher for this novel. Unfortunately, it fell short of my hopes, deserving a modest 2.5-star rating.
The central premise of Katelyn waking up in a hospital bed with amnesia, unable to recall her own birthday party and the events that followed, was intriguing. The concept of transient global amnesia as a plot device was a clever choice, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty and tension. However, this was a double-edged sword. While it prevented any predictable "aha" moments of memory recovery, it also made the story somewhat slow-paced and uneventful, leaving me occasionally bored.
The characters in the book were a major drawback for me. None of them came across as likable or relatable, and their self-centered and toxic behavior was hard to connect with. The toxic friendship between Katelyn and Leah, which dates back to their childhood, added depth to the story, but it also made it difficult to root for any of the characters. I couldn't help but feel sorry for Katelyn's daughter, Harper, who deserved better role models.
The narrative is divided between Katelyn and Leah, offering different perspectives on their complicated relationship. The timeline alternates between their childhood, the buildup to the ill-fated party, and its immediate aftermath. While this structure helped to unravel the complexities of their friendship, it didn't fully compensate for the book's slow pacing and unlikable characters.
Additionally, I noticed some editing errors in the story, such as inconsistencies in character details and references to outdated technology. These mistakes disrupted the immersion in the narrative.
In conclusion, "The Day After the Party" by Nicole Trope had an intriguing premise but fell short in execution. While I appreciated the unique approach to amnesia as a plot device, the slow pacing, unlikable characters, and editing errors left me feeling disconnected from the story. Despite this, I still see potential in the author's work, based on my previous positive experience, and I would be willing to give her another try in the future. Overall, I would rate this book a 2.5 to 3 stars. Thanks to the author and the publisher for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review; my thoughts and opinions are my own.
3⭐ - It took me some time to get into the book. Probably because it's written in third person. The story was interesting. During there were many things happening, which I didnt see coming. also when Leah and Katelyn were younger. The main theme of this book is toxic friendships, since the friendship of Leah & Katelyn is toxic. The chapters were short und jumping back in time, after the party and also during the night of the party. Overall an enjoyable read! I'll definitely check out other books by Nicole Trope!
Thank you NetGalley, Nicole Trope & Bookouture for sending me an ARC
So there was alot of suspense, drama, twista and turns and I did enjoy the story, but there were too many timelines and switching between the POV's that I couldn't enjoy the story.
Thanks publisher and Netgalley
All thoughts and opinions are my own and aren't influenced by anyone else
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC of this book! This is told from two POV'S, the hours after the party, years back, and it was a little hard to follow at times. I felt it picked up a little over half way, and some of the chapters weren't needed for a back story. In the beginning I did sympathize with Katelyn in her younger years, but didn't like her Character as she aged. All in all, I'd give it 3.5/5 and would still recommend as maybe someone else would love it more?
I am an avid psychological thriller reader and this book should not be classified under that category. It was a fantastic read, however the description is very misleading. In my honest opinion, it is more dark romance, drama, young adult, twisted toxic love triangle, very unbelievable. I couldn’t figure out where the psychological thriller part was?
I enjoyed how the story had character POV, flashback, and current day chapters that helped organize the plot for the reader. The characters were very unlikeable and it was more of a slow paced read. I was eagerly awaiting for the big plot twist but it was anticlimactic. Overall, I am glad to have discovered this author and I do plan on reading more of her work. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture.
Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to get an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I would rate this book at a 3.4 overall. I had never read a book by this author previously, so I had no expectations going into it. I originally was considering this as a do not finish book, but I am glad I continued reading it. The book continues to get better the further you get. Trying to avoid spoilers, I will say the story has a unique condition I have never read about. It was refreshing to read something new. This is a story of jealousy between friends and memory loss. There are lies and deception. The story timeline jumps back and forth over a span of 30 years. It was a little hard for me to keep up with the time and day of each section. This wasn’t a keep me on the edge of my seat thriller, but I would still recommend giving it a try.
The Day After the Party starts as the perfect birthday celebration takes a chilling turn, leaving the protagonist, Katelyn, with more questions than answers. The story begins with Katelyn celebrating her thirty-sixth birthday surrounded by her husband and friends in their beautifully decorated home. Fairy lights twinkle and the atmosphere is festive. However, the following day, Katelyn awakens in a hospital bed, shaken and terrified. To her horror, she realizes that she has no recollection of the events that transpired during the party.
As Katelyn seeks to piece together the fragments of her lost memories, she discovers unsettling clues and inconsistencies. Her best friend was furious at midnight, her husband said terrible things, and there were ominous signs that something went terribly wrong. When Katelyn confronts her husband about the party, his response is suspicious, and she can't shake the feeling that he's hiding something.
The suspense deepens as Katelyn grapples with a growing sense of dread and paranoia. She questions whether someone at the party may have harmed her, or if her own actions that night were somehow sinister. Trust begins to erode, and the once-close-knit group of friends and her husband become suspects in her quest to uncover the truth.
Nicole Trope skillfully crafts a psychological thriller that keeps readers on the edge. The narrative is filled with tension, mystery, and an ever-present sense of unease. As Katelyn's fragmented memories slowly resurface, the reader is taken on a journey of discovery and deceit. It is a tale of unreliable memories, secrets, and the fragile nature of trust. It explores the complex dynamics of relationships and the darkness that can lurk behind seemingly perfect facades. With each revelation, the story becomes increasingly entangled, and the reader is left guessing until the final shocking reveal.
It is a gripping psychological thriller that delves into the depths of memory, trust, and the consequences of hidden truths. Nicole Trope's storytelling prowess shines as she unravels a web of secrets, leaving readers with a haunting sense of unease and an appreciation for the unpredictability of human nature.
This is a great thriller, that gets going straight away! I really enjoyed it, twisty and interesting, I really do recommend it!
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for an advanced copy of The Day After the Party by Nicole Trope for an honest review.
This was my first NIcole Trope book and I will definitely be checking out some of her others. This psychological thrilled is told by two POV, Katelynn and Leah. There are multiple timelines in the story as we go back to with the two girls first became friends in elementary school, throughout their lives, and after the party.
Katelynn experiences an event at her 36th birthday party that leaves her without her memory for a short period of time. She then tries to remember what happened at her party that would cause this.
I did enjoy the story, but there was so many timelines and switching between the POV that I would have to double check whose chapter I was currently on. I did find it predictable but it was a fun read.
Katelyn smiles around at her husband and friends, gathered to celebrate her thirty-sixth birthday in their beautiful home decorated with fairy lights. But the next day Katelyn wakes up shaken and terrified in a hospital bed…
A good mystery/thriller with good plot twists and lots of atmosphere.
Great enticing cover
An author I usually really enjoy, her books are intriguing and full of surprises
This story deals with TAG, Transient Global Amnesia, a phenomenon where someone forgets a small amount of time previous to the TAG striking, it can be brought on by shock and orgasm amongst other things
The book takes us to the aftermath of a party and what happened, or didnt, at the party, 1 person Kaitlyn just cannot remember and for the other 3 involved this is either good, bad or convenient dependent on what they did that night…
Got to say awful characters and even though Kaitlyn raised sympathy re her predicament she didn’t half moan on about her life!
An intriguing look at TAG , bit repetitive in dialogue and thoughts and I look forward to the authors next book 🤗
On the evening of her 36th birthday, Katelyn throws a party. Friends old and new are there, along with husband Toby, bestie Leah, and Leah’s ex husband, Aaron. At sometime during the evening, Katelyn suffers an ‘episode’, that leads to her being admitted to hospital with memory loss caused by trauma. Having lost over 24 hours of memory, Katelyn is anxious to discover what caused the episode, and feels she is being kept in the dark by Toby. There are secrets and deceptions to be unearthed! Friendships are not always what they seem.
This author is usually very good, but she has certainly missed the mark with this one. Slow, predictable, full of filler, with obnoxious characters, it was a struggle. Billed as a psychological thriller was very misleading. It’s a family/friends drama at best. Will still read Trope’s books and definitely recommend them, but this one is not a winner for me.
Thank you NetGalley.
This book had such an interesting premise! Katelyn loses her memory at her own party. She can’t remember anything, but by the reactions of her husband and best friend, she knows something bad happened.
Truthfully, the twists weren’t near as twisty as I was hoping they’d be. Pretty basic. I thought all of the characters were horrible people.
The jealousy of Katelyn and Leah was so extreme. More of enemies than best friends. There was so much hate there. It did make the story interesting, and going back to the past, made you understand it a bit more.
With that said, the story kept me engaged and I had to know what happened at the party. The ending was sort of expected. Either way, it was entertaining and left you wanting more.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read the newest book by one of my favorite authors. I am always excited to see that Nicole Trope has finished another new novel. Unfortunately this one was a miss for me. The story follows Katelyn and her childhood friend through alternating points of view. Katelyn was at her birthday party and next thing she knew she was in the hospital having lost her memory of the party and all that transpired. Her friend Leah who she knew since they were 6 years old all of a sudden no longer seemed her ally but rather wanted Katelyn's husband and life. Through lots of twists we find out what really was going on and what transpired at the party. Things just did not jive for me. Regardless still worth a read and I will always support this author.
