Janet Dailey brings a story of Frank Culhane and his family. When his daughter finds his body in the stables, everyone becomes a suspect from his children and ex-wife to his current wife and those who work for him. Detective Rafferty comes onto the scene to solve the case. Tensions rise higher when his ex-wife appears of the scene to support her children and make sure that they are the rightful heirs of their father's legacy instead of his current wife. Detective Rafferty must decide who is telling the truth and who is lying; who will walk away with everything and who will gain nothing.
Janet Dailey brings us a story of family, loyalty, and greed. How far would you go to ensure your children will gain everything? Follow Detective Rafferty as he tries to figure out who is the killer and if they will strike again, or is it a case of just trying to get rid of one man. The twists and turns between those who are suspects and those seeking the truth become blurred as passions are raised will make you want to keep turning the page until you reach the end. But was the truth really discovered or was only one version revealed?
I read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I would like to thank NetGalley and Kensington Books, Kensington for this privilege.
If you are old enough to remember the TV show Dallas, then this book will feel familiar.
It's a tangled web of family - and business - intrigue. I think my favorite character was Sam Rafferty, the detective involved in investigating the death of ranch tycoon Frank Culhane.
It's a romance with a bit of mystery at its core. And a shot of Wild West action.
"Reining is a beautiful sport, but it's all about control. Frank was all about control, too."
When rancher and horse breeder Frank Culhane is murdered, there are plenty of suspects. He was the wealthy patriarch of one of the most prestigious families in Texas. Detective Sam Rafferty has a tough job to find the killer as there are many suspects. Family, neighbors and an ex who all have a motive. Keeps you trying to figure out the killer until the end! Enjoyed the book a lot.
Thanks to the author and Kensington!
ONE IN A MILLION is book one in the Rivalries series.
Once again we have a novel written by a committee of folks dedicated to continuing the legacy of thoughts and plots by Janet Dailey. Her husband and daughter spearhead this committee. In ONCE IN A MILLION we are looking at a group of possible suspects in a crime drama with a huge cast of characters. Here lies the problem. Too many suspects, crowded into a story, not one really catches your attention.
My forte is in character studying. Janet Dailey prided herself on developing a few stars in the cast of her scripts. In ONE IN A MILLION every page reminds us that there are just too many folks crowded into the same space. No one really stands out and candidly no one enters your heart. The characters each have defined roles in this crime drama. And at some point I had wanted to get some clarity.
The plot of ONE IN A MILLION revolves around a family that has lost its way. Each member decidedly with different goals. And no one with any noticeably admirable traits. When the head of the group is murdered the family coalesce around the mother who easily becomes the least likable character. But does that make her a murderer.
I have read and reviewed several books published by this group of folks determined to continue the legacy of Janet Dailey. As a fan of hers I keep reading their stories and enjoy seeing bits and pieces of an author I enjoyed. The title ONE IN A MILLION translates into something that is above par which is symbolic of the prized stallion, who is the star of the show. If you are in the market for an enjoyable crime tale this one will keep you turning pages.
I normally like Janet Dailey stories. I forced myself to finish this since it was an ARC from Netgalley. It dragged on and on, I didn't care for most of the characters, it was depressing, and didn't tie up the loose ends. On top of that it leaves the reader hanging at the end with the story continued in the next book. Hard pass on this one.
The start of a another great series from Janet Dailey. I cannot wait to see how this series will unfold.

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest opinion.
Action filled with mystery, romance, family feuds, horses and cowboys. The ending was abrupt but the epilogue tied up loose ends nicely. Fans of Linda Lael Miller, Danielle Steel, and Diana Palmer will devour this soapy saga.
4 stars
One in a Million by Janet Dailey. As with many of Ms Dailey's stories, One in a Million is action filled with mystery, romance, family feuds, horses and cowboys, Numerous characters were introduced most of whom are believable and relatable even likeable. There is the one total reprehensible character who has a wildlife hunting “club” (the cruelty and callousness toward these animals was hard to read). In total contrast, the care and love given to the horses was heartwarming. The ending was abrupt. The epilogue did tie some loose ends together but then added even more unanswered questions. As this is the first in a series, hopefully the questions will be answered in the next book.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.
I normally really like books by this author but this one was a miss for me. There are several plot items that I disliked and some of the character interaction and dialogue made me wonder what was going on - not in a positive way. But probably the biggest issue for me is that this book is there is almost no story resolution and it ends in a major cliff hanger. A couple of the minor threads are resolved but not the main parts of the story. I enjoy books that revisit the same locations and characters but I don't want to feel like I have to buy the next book to get the answers to the main story thread and several of the minor threads of the previous book. I received an ARC in exchange for my review. Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley.
This book was ok. I usually love the ones that Janet Dailey writes but this one was different. The ending was short. There were alot of unanswered questions. I hope the next one will be better. Im grateful that netgalley and the publishers let me read this in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this book it was such a great i cant wait to read more of Janet’s books!
I read a pre-publication version of this book. It is well written and well edited; it is peopled with believable and likable characters, and the plot is sufficiently complex to hold interest throughout. I became very involved with the lives of these characters and invested in how the situations were resolved. It is one of those books that you almost hate to finish because you feel like you know the characters.
