The second instalment in the author's Demons Among Us series continues the theme of a mature FMC falling for a supernatural MMC. This time it's a riff on the siren from Greek mythology.
This felt like a slight step up across the board compared to the first book; the relationship between the two MCs felt better paced, the prose is a bit sharper, and the steamy scenes are slightly saucier. Much like the first book, this one has a strong sense of place (this time we're in South Carolina) and the relationship between the MCs is very engaging.
A cozy short story! Elias and Lena are couple goals. Yes, there's some miscommunication, a trope I don't like that much, but I think it was correctly used. I would love to read how they story flows... and Niko's story too (pretty please?).
I liked this novella as well as the previous one in the series. Katelyn Brehm portrays mythical creatures as humane as possible, they seamlessly blend into society without being obnoxious.
When the story begins the main characters, Lena and Elias are both at the stage of their lives when some change is inevitable and later, after some character development, they realize what they needed was each other. Their journey was quite emotional for me, all the grief and yearning for freedom and independence but also need for love and affection. The island setting and the sirens were the additions that tied everything together and brought the magic to the table.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me a copy of the book.
I enjoyed The Siren's Song but didn't feel like I got to know Lena and Elias as well as I would have liked given that this one is a novella. We also didn't get to see them bonding very much so their relationship ended up feeling a little rushed to me. I would have loved to see this one as a full length book so we could have gotten more details about sirens, seen more of Elias and Lena's individual history and seen them bond more on page. I did really enjoy this story's version of the siren. Lots of other creatures have weaknesses but sirens often don't. I thought it was an interesting idea to have rejection be their weakness. Overall, this one is fun if you want a quick story with an interesting take on sirens and some romance.
Katelyn does it again with another great book from the Demons Among Us series. I loved this book just like the first one!
Elias is nothing like his cousin. While Niko is more of a playboy leading women on with his voice. Elias enjoys singing occasionally and lightly flirting. If things were to move further than that. He lets them know right away that there will be no strings.
The sea has always been his first and only love. Drawn to the water and swimming with the dolphins. He enjoys working for his family’s business and lifting the spirits of others.
Lena after the loss of her grandmother while finalizing her divorce. She finds herself back at Hilton Head Island. Where it’s always felt like home.
“Gods, I loved Hilton Head. So peaceful. So magical. So me.”
Trying to figure out what to do with her life now from the broken promises, losing her faith in men, and wanting to feel needed, and that she belongs.
Will she be able to resist the siren’s song? Can she move on from the past and plan her future?
“There’s nothing for me without you.”
Thanks, Katelyn Brehm for allowing me to be part of your ARC team again. I’ve enjoyed it so much and can’t wait to check out more from you! As always, my review is my opinion and thoughts. 💛
Adorable, warm, magical romance! A fun loving siren, and a woman with a broken heart, yea, obstacles abound. A quick read, with a bit of heat that makes for a satisfying HEA.
Ultimately not for me. I was hoping for more fantasy elements than it offered. However, I loved the representation of characters in their 40s. So this is a good one for me to have to recommend to those looking for books like that.
