The Lodge by Sue Watson was a fun, suspenseful read that kept me on my toes. Right from the beginning, the story pulled me in, and I couldn’t predict where it was going. The ending especially caught me off guard—it’s rare that a thriller manages to stay one step ahead of me, so that was a big plus.
The characters were what really made this one interesting. Each of them had a complicated side, and I kept switching between liking them and doubting them. Just when I’d start feeling sorry for one of them, a new twist would make me question their intentions all over again. It felt like I was right alongside them in that snowed-in lodge, constantly reevaluating who could be trusted.
As for the setting, I know the whole “isolated, snowy lodge” theme is pretty popular in thrillers, but this one didn’t feel tired or predictable. Watson managed to give it a fresh twist, making the setting feel intense and claustrophobic without leaning too hard on typical lodge-in-the-woods vibes.
Overall, The Lodge is a solid pick if you’re after a mystery that keeps you guessing, with complex characters and a setting that adds to the suspense. Definitely worth the read!
Heart pounding thriller that left me on the edge of my seat. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Definitely one of the best books this year.

By: Sue Watson
A dysfunctional family travels to a winter holiday arranged by the family matriarch who deems the gathering as her last birthday. They are snowed in and remain at the lodge until roads are cleared. A dead man is discovered near their lodge. The death brings the police. The story is told from multiple points of view as each character bares their hearts (almost) and feeds on their hate and prejudices toward each other. Each one has a theory about who killed the dead man and each one could be the killer. The power of the story is the mental workings of the characters. Read the book to its surprising ending. You won't be disappointed.
I received a copy of #TheLodge# from #NetGalley# and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.. Thank you, #NetGalley# and #Bookouture#
What a jaw dropping read!!! Had me on the edge of my seat, so many twists & turns it had me guessing all the way through!!!
Holy heck! My head is still spinning. This book has so many twists and turns. Excellent writing and storyline. At times, I had issues with keeping the characters straight...but that didn't take anything away from the rollercoaster ride that this book is.
Thanks to netgalley, Bookouture and the author for the advanced copy.
When a family, complete with ex wife, new wife and baby, grandmother and previous family children all arrive at the Lodge to celebrate Angela's birthday. She hints it might be her last and dementia is closing in fast. With a major storm and a murder it follows a tried but true plot with everyone a suspect. I enjoyed the read and the characters. The final chapter is a stunner. Enjoy.
First of all I loved the title and cover for this book. So having read most of the author’s books I kind of knew what to expect. But wowsers I wasn’t expecting that. This book is so darn good I loved everything about it. I was totally hooked from start to end and listened to the audio in one day.
The narrator is awesome and really brings this story to life. I literally didn’t know who to trust. I mean you have an ex wife, the new wife, the mother in law and Scott trapped in a lodge. What could possibly go wrong?!
I loved that this story was set in the snow at Cornwall instead of the sunshine. Making the story more dramatic.
I also love how the story is told, alternating between Danni and Fiona. Building the story up layer by layer which keeps you on the edge of your seat.
This is a story full of twists and turns and suspense. I couldn’t listen to it fast enough. The Lodge is my new number one favourite by Sue Watson. She has really excelled herself with this cracking read. It is without a doubt a five star read.
This was quiet the adventure and a lot of dysfunctional family drama with some twists and turns along the way. This one wasn't really for me because of all the people involved. It also was a very slow burn which at times for a thriller will make me loose interest.
A dysfunctional family in lockdown. The elderly mother, her son and his wife and baby, his ex and their children and the strange Jenna.
A murderous hit and run, followed by so many lies and secrets. Then someone goes missing to be found dead. The police hindered by the amount of snow to even get to the lodge.
Meanwhile my head was spinning by all the secrets, who did both crimes and why. Also what has young Jenna got over the family, weaseling her way into their lives.
The ending wow what a moral dilemma.
Great mystery thriller, I really enjoyed it.
Oh this was a fantastic read! I love a good winter setting. It made me feel like I was in the actual snow while reading it. The twist was great!
Another fantastic book by Sue Watson.
A great mystery full of twists and turns with a cast of great characters. Read it in a few days, didn’t want to put it down.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC.
This book was SO fun in my opinion. I knew I absolutely had to read it based on the description. It did not disappoint. Such a wild ride.
I love a book that is set in a lodge/cabin in the snow. Full of drama and told by multiple POV. Loved the characters . I honestly couldnt put this book down.
Sue Watson can sure write characters I love to hate! She has done it again in The Lodge. I don't think there was a single character in this book that I liked, but the family drama was like a car crash you just can't look away from.
The matriarch of the Wilson family calls everyone together for her birthday - and I mean everybody. Her son and his first wife and their children - and her son's SECOND wife with their child in tow as well. Obviously drama unfolds - how can it not? But then a body turns up and no one is allowed to leave.
Will they all kill each other before they get out of here?
I loved all the cold weather vibes of this story and the lodge setting. And of course loved all the drama - addictive fun read.
A story that gave me chills down my spine and the revenge filled plot is tense and deeply disturbing.
Horrendously I’m only reviewing books that I actually read a while ago now, but here we are!
I jumped for The Lodge, firstly, having wanted to read a Sue Watson forever, and secondly, because one of my favourite types of thriller is one where a group of people are stuck together in one place and a crime has been committed/something is afoot!
In typical thriller fashion (claps hands together in glee), a family is staying together in a lodge. The thing is the family consists of exes and current, and comes complete with an upset baby just to fray nerves some more.
I’ll admit a lot of this book is showing the fraught tension that arises when people who shouldn’t even be in the same room together are living in the same house, with the dynamic changing all the time. Being a rom com reader I was absolutely there for this and loved the range of characters, some unlikeable, others unfortunate luck-wise.
The ending sped things up considerably with some twists I didn’t see coming. I’ll admit I was slightly confused as to whether certain things happened or were closed out, but all in all really enjoyed this and would recommend. Thanks to the publisher for the book in return for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Rating:4/5
Summary:
Fiona is invited to her former mother in law’s 75th birthday weekend at a remote lodge. It is an interesting gathering considering she also invited her son and his new wife and child. Fiona’s teenagers to her ex-husband are attending as well. Adding to the mix, a professional chef who also has connections to most of the characters shows up to be their cook for the weekend! What a mix of people!
As the guests gather the first night, they find out there was a man killed and found on the side of the road near the lodge during the snowstorm that started that evening.
My Thoughts:
Sue Watson has never disappointed me! I love her books, and this one is a great one to read on a winter weekend.
The book is told in alternating narrators mostly Fiona and Danni, the new wife, although a few others are filtered in. I love a good domestic drama with unreliable narrators! Mix in a murder, and I’m sold!
Thank you to Netgalley for the advanced reader’s copy!
Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book. I love a good thriller and this did not disappoint. I appreciate having a dual POV…as o feel I am more invested in each persons story and how they intertwine. I am interested in more books from this author. This was my first book by Sue Watson.
#TheLodge. #NetGalley
Loved this thriller! I appreciated the dual POVs. Everyone had their own secrets which made this thriller to be quite suspenseful and enjoyable for me!
I have loved every book that I have read so far from Sue Watson. She has a way with words like no other author. A family holiday that includes murder what could be better?
