SPOILER ALERT!
This book was just okay for me. I didn’t like the characters and felt the author was repetitive with Fiona and Danni’s thoughts about the other. We get it…they did not like each other. The book just wasn’t realistic to me. Fiona confides to her son that she is the one that killed Nick and yet Sam acted like she was telling him a bedtime story. It just didn’t seem real to me. The mystery surrounding the disappearance of Danni was a bit of a surprise but by then I was quickly scanning over the last pages to get through the book to see how it ended.
Two day ago the Wilson family checked in to the imposing, glass=fronted Lodge, surrounded by snow and perched perilously on the edge of a cliff looking out to a grey sea. Not everyone was looking forward to the family get-together. But mother-in-law Angela insisted the winter trip would help heal their rifts.
Fiona had been invited by her ex-mother-in-law Angela to spend a few days with the family, as this could be her last birthday (but she didn't say why}. Fiona's children, Sam and Georgia, her ex-husband and his new wife Danni, and their young baby, and a woman called Jenna who was asked to be their chef for the weekend at a lodge in Cornwall.
When a book is set in mu favourite holiday destination, Cornwall, and it's written by one of my go-to authors, Sue Watson, I'm there, quickly pressing the request button. Everyone seems to have a secret. The story is told from Fiona, Scott, and Danni's perspectives. There's a hit-and-run accident, a murder, they've all been snowed in together, and no one knew who they could trust. With so many twists, my head was spinning. Tension and the attitudes towards each other was rising. The characters are well-developed. This is a really good thriller.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #SueWatson for my ARC of #TheLodge in exchange for an honest review.
The Lodge a seemingly idyllic family gathering in a remote lodge shrouded in snow takes a dark and chilling turn as long-held secrets, jealousy, and revenge come to the forefront. The Wilson family, including the new wife, Danni, and the ex-wife, Fiona, check into The Lodge, a striking glass-fronted retreat nestled in a snowy landscape perched on the edge of a cliff overlooking the grey sea. The family's patriarch, Scott, hopes this getaway will help mend the fractures in their relationships. However, tensions run high from the start, particularly between Danni and Fiona, who both harbour their own doubts and insecurities.
The orchestrator of this family gathering is Angela, the well-meaning but meddlesome mother-in-law, who believes that bringing everyone together is the key to healing their rifts. As the family members navigate their strained dynamics, a night of heated arguments gives way to a chilling morning when a scream pierces the silence. It becomes apparent that not everyone had come to The Lodge with the intention of playing happy families—someone has a score to settle.
Sue Watson skillfully weaves a web of suspense and intrigue as she delves into the intricacies of family relationships, jealousy, and the consequences of hidden truths. The narrative shifts between the perspectives of various family members, allowing readers to explore their individual motivations, secrets, and vulnerabilities. It is a psychological thriller that keeps readers guessing, with twists and revelations that add layer upon layer to the mystery. As the family members grapple with their own doubts and mistrust, the tension escalates, leading to a heart-pounding climax where the darkest secrets come to light.
It is a gripping psychological thriller that explores the complexities of family dynamics, secrets, and the desire for revenge. Sue Watson's storytelling skillfully navigates the treacherous terrain of suspicion and mistrust, creating a narrative that will keep readers captivated until the final, shocking revelation.
Another great fast paced thriller read from this author, great characters that I got to know, so well described. The storyline was just brilliant and I was on the edge of my seat all the way from the very beginning.
What can you say about the ending! everything brought to a more than satisfactory conclusion that you will never guess.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this brilliant ARC which I have no hesitation in recommending.
The Lodge by Sue Watson is another gripping page-turner from this brilliant author, and I was very reluctant to put it down, even for a moment.
The Wilson family has gathered at the behest of matriarch Angela, who is celebrating her seventy-fifth birthday. To mark the milestone, she has rented a lodge where her son, his ex-wife Fiona and their two children, his new wife Danni, and infant daughter will gather. A surprise guest arrives in the form of Jenna, a chef whose services Angela has employed for the duration of their stay. But as a storm blankets the lodge in snow, tensions begin to boil over among those who are now trapped inside, and secrets will be revealed, the culmination of which none could have predicted.
This is a bit of a slow burner that is told in multiple POVs which, for me, really ratcheted up the tension. Those who are drawn to an Agatha Christie-esque closed room mystery will love this one. 4.5 stars
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an ARC.
I thought this was a good book! I like that it kept me interested and was hard to put down, I kept wanting to keep reading til the end!!
Sue Watson-another great thriller! I enjoyed the characters and the premise of this story. Set in a lodge in the middle of nowhere with a major snowstorm- what a perfect setting for this family with so many secrets. Well written and the suspense of what would happen was killing me! Definitely a real page turner-I couldn’t wait till the end but I was then sad that it was over! Multiple twists that I never expected-all woven together in a great story. Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Sue Watson for the opportunity to read and review this ARC. Highly recommend this book!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy of the book.
It’s Angela’s birthday and all the family are off to stay in a lodge in Cornwall.
Fiona and her teenage children Sam and Georgia, Scott (Fiona’s ex husband), his wife Danni (who he married after their affair), and their baby daughter Olivia, plus Jenna who is acting as the chef for the weekend.
Things go wrong rapidly. Lots of within the group, a hit and run and then somebody goes missing. All accompanied by snow storms.
Really enjoyed this. It was told from the point it view of Fiona and Danni. The characters were believable and as a reader you believed in them.
This was a really slow burner. I was quite frustrated at points and just wanted to get to the big reveal. Then when it did happen there was many excellent twists, the biggest one I would never have predicted. 5 stars!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this advanced copy. Sue Watson does it again! This psychological thriller kept me guessing until the very end. Family, fear, secrets and suspense against the background of the lodge in the middle of a snowstorm! Edge of seat.
The very epitome of page-turner with a chilling storyline that grips from the first and kept me guessing right up to the heart-racing denouement STUNNER ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Lodge is a family gathering that you wont soon forget.
Angela the matriarch has invited the family that includes her son's ex wife and current wife.
Whatever could go wrong that scenario?
Secrets, lies and a a hit run that was a fatality that the police say could only be one of them including their two children and the cook.
A winter storm rages as the group is isolated and no one trusts anyone.
That's all I am saying in fear of giving one of the twists and turns ( that will have you gasping) away.
Get your copy of The Lodge and settle in for a harrowing read.
Thanks to Net Galley and Bookouture for a page turning read.
I am an avid fan of Sue Watson's novels. "The Lodge," I have to say, was a bit of a tough one to get through. The only thing that really kept me going was the slight twist at the end, which was unexpected but not quite what I was used to from Watson's other works. Unfortunately, I found it hard to connect with the characters, as they all seemed fairly similar and didn't develop much throughout the story. While the multiple points of view at the beginning of the book did set it apart, it didn't do much to move the plot along and actually made it feel stagnant. I was disappointed by the ending, which was wrapped up too neatly and didn't provide the fireworks I was hoping for after such a long read. I'm not sure who I would recommend this book to, as it didn't quite live up to my expectations.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for letting me read this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
A winter weekend at a beautiful lodge on the Cornish coast? This would be a perfect getaway weekend for Fiona but…the weekend is to celebrate her former mother-in-law Angela’s birthday. Angela has also invited her son Scott, his new wife Danni and their baby daughter. Scott left Fiona for Danni so feelings are strained. Sam and Georgia, Fiona and Scott’s teenage children are also included as is Jenna, a chef with ties to the family. Recipe for disaster? You have no idea. Add a blizzard, a hit and run accident and a missing person to the mix and you have the wild ride that is The Lodge.
Fiona and Danni, in alternating chapters, describe events from very different perspectives. They are both dynamic characters and Scott seems to be torn between them and the mysterious Jenna. The blizzard is a character itself, causing many weekend problems. The Lodge is a quick read, a page turner full of twists and surprises. 5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Sue Watson for this ARC.
Wow! I loved this book so much. The tone was set immediately with the dangerous journey to the lodge. I felt the main characters’ anxiety and apprehension. The setting was amazing and that fabulous opening had me gripped.
Pitching the ex wife against the current wife in a locked door mystery was genius. The tension remained high right from start to end. Danni and Fiona’s POVs brought their own unravelling of secrets which kept me turning those pages. I had so many theories as to who had done what and what was going on but Sue totally surprised me. I wasn’t even close.
If you love psych thriller in a claustrophobic setting, you cannot afford to miss out on The Lodge. Winter is coming and this book needs to be on your pile while you sit in front of the fireplace with hot chocolate and biscuits. Bravo!
This was a great read! I loved the dual POVs the story had that really helped with developing the story. I did find some of the chapters to be a little on the longer side. Besides that, I felt that this story really kept pulling in. There was not any part of it that I was not interested in. The twist at the end really caught me by surprise. I wish it would have been a little more spread out than it all coming out at once but it still surprised me either way.
Work kept getting in the way of me finishing this sooner but I was enjoying have it stretch out, it’s a twisty tense read that had me second guessing right to the last page and what a surprise conclusion, I did have my suspicions but they were way off.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Wow. That was a slow moving but crazy ride of a read.
I enjoyed the cut off winter setting. Some characters were very easy to dislike and others I liked a lot.
The ending was definitely a surprise I did not expect. I had a feeling there was going to be one last twist at the end but I wasn’t expecting that.
I do wish that the book hadn’t gone from the lodge to a whole year later. It threw me off a bit.
But all around a good, slow moving thriller with complicated people.
I love books set in winter so I was really looking forward to this one. I dived in and was grabbed from the firefly page. A really great read, with lots of twists, the perfect winter read!
Wow!! I loved this so much! Such a great read, I was hooked straight away, definitely recommend a read!
Angela is turning 75 and fears this may be her last birthday so she invites her family to spend a weekend in a beautiful lodge on the Cornish coast. But this is no ordinary family as invited are her son, his wife & baby, 2 teenage children and his ex-wife. A recipe for disaster. And when a blizzard hits and they're stranded old resentments and jealousies are the nature of the day.
Just when you think you have everything all worked out, Sue Watson throws another spanner in the works. So many times I thought I knew where the book was going and what had happened only to be blindsided again and again.
