Fiona is guilt tripped into spending the weekend with her children, ex husband and Danni, the woman who stole him from her, in an isolated lodge on the Cornish coast.
This was a good locked in thriller. I really loved the duel narration between Fiona and Danni, it was very clever how the author made you change who you were rooting for in each chapter after seeing things from their different perspectives. Perfect for those looking for a winter thriller to escape all the cosy Christmas romances.
In the heart-stopping thriller "The Lodge," Watson delivers a riveting tale of family tensions, buried secrets, and a remote setting that becomes a chilling stage for revenge. The Wilson family's winter getaway at The Lodge takes a sinister turn when a simple family gathering transforms into a suspenseful nightmare.
The characters, each grappling with their own demons, are skillfully woven into the narrative tapestry. Danni, the new wife plagued by feelings of impostorship; Fiona, the ex-wife with a seething jealousy; Angela, the mother-in-law with a penchant for interference; and Scott, the husband torn between two families, each bring their own complexities and secrets to the snowy landscape.
As tensions escalate and an argument unfolds, the story takes a dark turn with a mysterious disappearance and the ominous proclamation of someone seeking revenge. The atmosphere of The Lodge, perched on the edge of a cliff and surrounded by snow, adds an eerie backdrop to the unfolding drama.
The story deftly builds suspense with every twist and turn, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. The revelation of Scott's darkest secret promises to be a game-changer, adding layers of complexity to an already gripping narrative. You will not see these twists coming.
This is a masterful blend of family drama, psychological suspense, and the looming threat of revenge. It is a compelling and atmospheric thriller that explores the complexities of family dynamics and the consequences of buried secrets. If you enjoy page-turning mysteries with a chilling edge, this novel is a must-read, showcasing the author's ability to deliver a thrilling and immersive experience. You won't be able to put this book down.
Fab story based in a beautiful setting with a very random family dynamic. The mother is the matriarch and everyone is keen to please her even her son’s ex wife- which is awkward seen as the new wife has been invited to the lodge too. Easy to read and a real page turner
Wowie, this was a page-turner! It's been a while since I've read a domestic suspense, and I'm pleased that I started with this one. It was great and ticked off all the boxes for a gripping book in this genre and more. It's told between two perspectives--Fiona, the ex-wife, and Danni, the new one one.
When the mother-in-law requests a family getaway at a lodge in the middle of winter, she seems to be the only one who doesn't fully appreciate how awkward this will be for everyone. I mean, what can go wrong getting the old wife and her kids together with the new wife and hers? Honestly, that setup alone is ripe for conflict and tension, but the author adds another layer. The mother-in-law decides to hire a cook for the weekend, but this person isn't a stranger to everyone. In fact, there is a dark history there, and this enigma will have you flipping the pages to see if you can find anyone to trust.
That process doesn't get easier when police show up at the door, saying there was a fatal hit-and-run. Given how much attention there are giving the occupants of the lodge, is one of them a killer? You'll need to read the book to find out.
I will say that what was to be a weekend getaway stretches into a week-long nightmare with lifetime repercussions. To find out what they are, again, you'll need to read the book. You won't be getting any spoilers from me!
The Lodge is a gritty domestic suspense that will leave you in want of trusting anyone.
This fast paced thriller had so many characters and moving parts it was hard to keep track of everything going on. I still loved it though. Told from the 3rd person, this thriller starts on a stormy night when a make shift family is celebrating at a VIP lodge. They must all travel separately to their destination and once there, it is not long after that the police arrive and tell them someone has been murdered on the road they took up to the lodge.
This has unreliable narratives, fast paced scenes, angry family and many different stories working together. Don't miss out.
The Lodge by Sue Watson is a dark twisty psychological read .A looked cabin whodunit which is made even more interesting due to the unlikable characters and a surprise ending that I didn't see coming

January is the perfect time for a winter thriller and this fit the bill perfectly.
I enjoyed my time with this book and will continue to read more from this author
This was a pretty medium paced snowed in thriller that was so easy to read. I loved the characters and how everyone had something to hide. The ending was a surprise and I have mixed feelings about it but overall, great book.
This was a page turner, It was razor sharp ( much like her other books). It kept me guessing and I had a hard time putting this one down . Propulsive and fast!
Such a page turner. It kept me speculating throughout. Wild twists that I never saw coming. Loved it! Absolute must read 100 percent!
Couldn’t get through this. After 7 days I only got as far as 45% before I decided I couldn’t persevere any longer. Such a slow, drawn out book. 152 pages in and literally nothing has happened - not a thing! Just 2 women against each other, back and forth, blah blah blah. I’m sorry, but it was so tedious.
I absolutely loved The Lodge. I thought the premise was really interesting and the author really delivered. The characters were all so interesting and intriguing in their own ways. I spent the majority of the book trying to figure out everyone's intentions and who we could trust. These are my favorite types of thrillers. I thought the ending was very dramatic and really wrapped the book up nicely.

Angela invites her son Scott, his wife Danni, their daughter Olivia, Scott's ex-wife Fiona, who Scott cheated on with Danni, their 2 college aged children and a chef to a remote seaside Lodge in the winter to celebrate her 75 birthday, which she seems certain will be her last. What could go wrong with this crowd? Well, an unidentified man is found dead near the Lodge, they get snowed in, and then someone from their own party goes missing.
This book was a little slow for me. It was told with alternating chapters from Fiona's and Danni's points of view and I felt like there was a fair amount of rehashing what had happened from the other's point of view which has a purpose but didn't really move the story along. I found this to be a good but not great read. I think this author has written better but none of her books are bad so I enjoyed it somewhat.
This is definitely one of the best thrillers I have read this year! It’s the perfect atmospheric whodunnit for the season. “Desperate people are dangerous.” This mystery is full of dangerous, desperate people with secrets to hide. Desperation mixed with secrets proves to be deadly in this twisted tale. Sue Watson once again shows that she is the whodunnit queen. I quickly devoured this addictive story of deception and betrayal. I enjoyed discovering how a dream getaway quickly turns into a tragic nightmare. Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for my copy. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Wonderful. This author never disappoints. Tense and thrilling, the pace never lets up. I was flying through the pages but I also didn't want it to end - it was just soooo good. Do read this one. Just wow!
When Fiona gets invited to spend the weekend in a lodge for her ex-mother in law Angela's birthday, she's reluctant to say yes. A weekend with her ex-husband Scott, his new wife Danni, and their 1 year old baby Olivia does not sound appealing, but Angela is adamant this may be her last birthday and she wants the whole family there to celebrate. Then, an accident and a snow storm mean the whole family is stuck in the lodge for longer than intended. With tensions rising and arguments waiting to happen, will everyone make it out alive?
This was quite gripping and kept me entertained throughout. Told in the perspectives of Fiona and Danni, it was good knowing how both women felt about everything going on. This was very fast-paced and kept me guessing there were some parts I felt weren't really needed but overall pretty enjoyable.
A locked room whodunit by the talented Sue Watson. This was excellent. Mysterious, thrilling. It kept me guessing and the storm added an element of suspense and made it a bit haunting too.
I think Sue Watson is a great mystery/thriller writer and this book is no exception. Snowstorms and a killer whodunit, what more can you want? Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this book.
The Wilson family checked into the imposing, glass-fronted Lodge, surrounded by snow and perched perilously on the edge of a cliff looking out to a grey sea. Not everyone was looking forward to the family get-together. But mother-in-law Angela insisted the winter trip would help heal their rifts... The new wife who feels like an imposter. She doesn't trust anyone - even her husband. But is she trustworthy herself? The ex-wife who feels that all eyes are on her. She's here for the sake of her children, but she fails to hide her seething jealousy towards her ex-husband's new family... The mother-in-law who can't help but interfere. She planned the family holiday to get everyone together, but does she really want to keep the peace? The husband torn between his ex-wife and his new wife. He says he wants to do right by his family, but he's been telling lies to them all. Now his darkest secret is about to be revealed. After a night of arguments, morning breaks with a single scream! Someone came to get revenge... will they all make it out alive?
So much drama, secrets and I loved absolutely every minute of it. Sue Watson definitely knows how to write an amazing thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat till the very end!
Thank you Sue Watson, Netgalley and bookouture for allowing me to read this advanced readers copy of The Lodge published on October 24,2023.
Very good whodunit book. There were so many possibilities and guilty characters. When the truth finally came out I was speechless.
