I was drawn to this book by the fun blurb, and interesting relationship between the main characters. Rival-to-lovers in such a direct way felt like a rare and fun new take. I was also excited about the trivia aspect of this book, I love a good TV quiz!
Unfortunately I really struggled with these characters. Just from the outset I thought Teddy was quite unpleasant, he was snotty and superior, he made faux-pas that were actually pretty rude, and I just could not imagine a world in which he would be deemed attractive. Comfort obviously wanted us to chalk this up to his education, but as someone that knows several Oxford-grads, it just didn't ring true. Max was not much better to be honest, the insta-lust of it all, the femme fatale vibe, she just didn't seem like an actual person so much as an archetype.
From that point on I just could not engage with the plot, I wasn't invested enough in either of them.
I wanted to like this book, I am sure other people really will, but it just was not for me.

4.5/5
Loved reading it. The book was perfect.
I loved Maxine's character and her Quirky personality and her and Teddy's chemistry.
I would read more books of this author in future.

loved this enemies to lovers romance with a game show mixed in. Loved that he was strait laced and she was whirlwind but they had spark and worked together and found their way to love.

I loved this book! 4.5 stars rounded up to 5. It had one of my favorite spicy scenes of all time (the map one iykyk). I really loved both of the main characters as well. I was going to rate it 4 stars because the trivia portions got a little boring for me but I bumped it up to 4.5 because the ending was one of my favorites of all time! I typically don't like the endings of books but woah this one blew me away! All of the external conflict in the book really helped with the pacing and made this such a quick read for me!

a good read and i didn't want to put it down. this was very enjoyable and loved it all. read it today

This book has exactly what I want from a romcom. Maxine's dialogue is witty and fun, it delivers in the comedy.
I love the outgoing girl, stuck-up guy trope. The tension between Maxine and Teddy was really great too.
The ending was surprising and usually I enjoy a good plot twist, neither of them winning was definitely that, but that they didn't really try just to make a grand gesture thus throwing the game felt out of character and worked against both their greater goals. The book also fails then to explain how Teddy will become a full time writer without the prize money. I would've wished for more resolution there but other than this the book was a fun, enjoyable read.

This was a hot nerdy good time! In the beginning I didn’t really believe their romance - it seemed kinda off - but once they start banging you forget all about it!! I enjoyed this one

Okay this may have just hit on the exact kind of vibe I was looking for on a grey Saturday, but I L-O-V-E-D this one. Maxine and Teddy are *chef's kiss* perfection. Setting a show in a Jeopardy-esque world is something I would have taken years to think of and yet! It's perfectly done here. The tension, the chemistry, the banter. Firing on all cylinders. Even though the ending gets a little wacky, I loved every second of it.
5 stars for how much I enjoyed the read. Thanks to NetGalley and Montlake for the ARC.

Question: this quiz gameshow based romance received a 5 star rating from confusedbugs for being unique, hot and funny…
Answer: what is What Is Love?
Oh my god, I loved this book. it was so different, I’ve never read a quiz show romance but I'd definitely do it again!
Listen, this book made me MAD but in the best way. The tension and chemistry between these characters was so intense and incredibly well written that every ‘almost’ made me mad. like… just get to it we all know you want to!! But I loved it, it was perfectly written tension.
I also loved the ADHD representation and the understanding of and willingness to learn from the characters. I was so glad that neither of the main characters were stereotypes (of neurodiversity or class) and both were completely loveable and well written.
This book, and it’s drama (and spice), has been on my mind for the past couple of days. It’s unforgettable.

I could gush about this book for the next year and a half straight. So funny, so sexy, so so smart!! I wanted to crush it in a single sitting, but also wanted to prolong it as long as possible because I didn't want it to end. I loved it with my whole max heart!!!

This book had lovely representation and as a trivia nerd, this ONE WAS JUST MADE FOR ME! I really liked them and how they were rivals just obsessed with one another!
Teddy was adorable! His emotions and feelings were so genuine and the love he had for Maxine just made me giddy and emotional! You can clearly see how their love story develops and grows, it was heartwarming!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this ARC!

compulsively readable, sexy as hell, and hilarious. this jeopardy enemies to lovers rom com is the absolute best. the like between hate and lust is so thin and the tension in the MCs’ banter is palpable, without being overwrought. i loved the neurodivergent representation and acceptance. and did i mention it’s sexy?? like jaw on the floor didn’t know this is something i liked but here we are sexy. and the absolute sweetest ending. i’m obsessed.

This is my favorite of Jen Comfort's books! I don't know how a book about a game show (basically Jeopardy) could be so bonkers, but it is, and yet it's also romantic, tender, nerdy, and laugh-out-loud funny?!
Maxine is my feral ADHD icon and I want to be her when I grow up. Teddy is yet another one of Jen Comfort's adorably unconventional but still somehow very hot heroes. This is dual POV and I loved them both equally from the bottom of my heart, and I didn't know who I wanted to win the final prize they're competing for--but I will say the ending manages to be perfect in a way I didn't see coming!
A must-read if you're looking for an *actually funny* rom-com!

"What is Love?" by Jen Comfort has stolen my heart and turned me onto the rivals-to-lovers trope! It’s set against the backdrop of a gameshow which is so unique and fun - it made this such a captivating read. The dialogue, tension, and chemistry between the main characters is what really sold me and kept me hooked - If you know me, you know i love witty/snarky banter and this definitely delivered. I was kicking my feet and giggling the whole time.
Jen skillfully balances the plot with elements of humor, tension, spice, and character development which is sure to leave a lasting impression. Expect a delightful rollercoaster ride through the realms of romance, competition, and personal growth.
I’ll now be telling everyone who listens about this book! Thank you NetGalley, Publisher and Author for this ARC!

Delightful perfection. Frankly five stars isn't enough to do WHAT IS LOVE? justice. An absolute delectable blend of humor, heat, and heart!!!! This book checks all the boxes. The author does a brilliant job of keeping the intensity up (if not increasing it!) between the characters throughout the entire story. Enemies-to-lovers is one of my favorite tropes, but more often than not I find that the characters become no longer enemies too early on in the plot, but this author's enemies(rivals)-to-lovers is *chef's kiss," along with the witty banter!!! I will also say it's hard to for romances to ever make me want to squeal into a pillow or even laugh out loud, and this one sure did. I will be telling everyone I know and even people I don't know about this book.
I so admired and appreciated the character depth and growth for both of the love interests, and Teddy and Maxine are one of those couples that will forever live in my heart. I feel touched to have experienced their world and witness Teddy and Maxine's special kind of love. And Maxine may have been afraid to admit falling in love with Teddy at first, but man, I would have gladly confessed my love to Teddy right off the bat. Having read the author's other books, it's really cool to see how much the author's voice and style has grown since, and I CAN NOT wait to read what the author decides to grant us with next!
Much gratitude to Montlake and NetGalley for the advanced digital readers copy in exchange for my honest review.

Two rivals on a trivia game show end up falling in love. Maxine and Teddy start from rivals into friends and more....
Terrific characters. Each is interesting on his/her own and are great together. Fun banter. Very sexy scenes... Really enjoy it. A fun rom-com.
Thanks to the publisher for the arc.

"What is Love?" by Jen Comfort appears to be a quirky and engaging tale that celebrates the magic of knowledge, the thrill of competition, and the unexpected sparks of romance.
The story introduces us to Maxine Hart, a self-described Brooklyn street rat with a unique set of talents and an insatiable hunger for trivia. Maxine's ADHD "superpowers" and passion for learning make her a formidable contender on the trivia game show Answers!. Her unexpected victory over the 76-time-winner Teddy Ferguson, coupled with a surprising kiss, sets the stage for a delightful and unconventional romance.
The premise of a trivia game show and the competitive world surrounding it offers an intriguing backdrop for the story. Readers can anticipate a narrative that explores the joy of intellectual pursuits and the excitement of high-stakes competition.
The dynamic between Maxine and Teddy, who couldn't be more different on the surface, promises to be a central focus. Their arrangement to combine their strengths and help each other succeed in the tournament is likely to lead to humorous and heartwarming moments. The idea of two people coming together to fill in the gaps in each other's knowledge is both endearing and intellectually stimulating.
Overall, "What is Love?" seems to offer a delightful blend of romance, humor, and intellectual exploration. It invites readers to delve into the world of trivia while rooting for the unlikely pair of Maxine and Teddy. It's a tale that celebrates the pursuit of knowledge and the unexpected connections that can form in the most unconventional of settings.

A book about a freaking gameshow? I was like eh, I'll give it a shot, why not? OMG this book is freaking amazing. I absolutely adored it. Maxine and Teddy are like....love goals people. Ugh, I just want to squeeze this book. I will definitely be recommending this book to everyone I know that loves a good witty/snarky/spicy book. I read it in one sitting, I could not put it down.
When I read the scene with Teddy and Maxine "studying" the map, and right after skydiving, and the "stairwell scene" I might have spontaneously combusted. If you want to know what those scenes are you will just have to read it for yourself. ;)
Their banter is top notch, the humor is spectacular and the ending may just make you shed a tear with happiness.
I am immediately adding Jen Comfort to my must read authors list. Well done!
Thank you to NetGalley, Montlake and Jen Comfort for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
