Murder at an Irish Chipper
Colleen O’Connor
February 20, 2024
It’s time for a holiday and the O’Sullivan Six and the Flannerys head off to celebrate a honeymoon in Lahinch by the sea. It’s been horrid due to the heat in KIlbane so they all thought it would be grand. They planned to visit the best chipper around owned by Mrs. Chips along with playing on the beach and staying in John O’Healy’s inn. In the middle of settling we find the family in the midst of a battle of two chippers, one right across the street from another. Vera Crowley owns one and the other is Corman’s ‘her ex-husbands. Since the divorce, there has been heated discussions over the use of beef fat or vegetable oil - amongst other things. With Lahinch being a small town, the residents have joined forces to favor one against the other.
Murder at an Irish Chipper will be published by Kensington Publishing Corporation on February 20, 2024. I was able to read the ARC of Colleen O’Connor’s latest Irish murder mystery via NetGalley. It’s another fun and rowdy adventure with all of the O’Sullivans along with Siobhan and MacDara. This book is number ten in O’Connor’s An Irish Village series. They are always a delight complete with Irish brogue. This one keeps the murderer under wraps until the conclusion. The reader is in a quandary as to who committed the crime. Do enjoy this one!
Part of series with Siobhan and Macdara.
The family goes on a seaside holiday and gets involved with a murder in a locked building.
Drama,,mystery, twists many suspects and a bit of romance.
Good intriguing story
Voluntary reviewed.
Another top notch whodunit in this spectacular series.
The writer transports you to Ireland with vivid writing and great characters.
I cannot wait to read the next one.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
This is one of my favorite cozy mystery series featuring the O’Sullivan-Flannery clan. Siobhan and Macdara decide to take the whole family on their honeymoon to the coast, escaping the heat. When they arrive, they walk right into a murder scene. Vera, known as Mrs. Chips is dead, after an adversarial divorce with Mr, Chips. The usual red herrings create distractions from solving the murder. I love these characters, and their relationship, and I enjoy the Irish background. Recommended. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
MURDER AT AN IRISH CHIPPER is the tenth book in the Irish Village Mysteries by Carlene O’Connor. While this can be read as a standalone, you’ll want to go back to the beginning to enjoy the character development of Siobhán, Macdara, and her five siblings over the course of the series—it’s well worth it! In this newest release, Siobhán and Macdara are heading to a seaside village vacation for a belated honeymoon, except they’re bringing the entire family. While it might not be the most romantic getaway, they’re still looking forward to spending time with each other until that too is interrupted by murder on their very first hour in town. The author’s description of the seaside village makes me yearn to visit. She brings the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes to life on the pages. I also adore the core cast of characters. While they may joke and push each other around a bit, there’s such love, respect, and closeness between each of them you’ll want to spend as much time as possible with the group.
While Macdara might be a detective sergeant, he believes the local Garda should be in charge of the investigation since they’re on vacation. Especially since most believe the unfortunate death of Mrs. Chipper was accidental. However, Garda Siobhán’s natural inquisitive nature and keen observation skills make her want to become involved and it’s not long before she pulls her husband into proving it was murder. Ms. O’Connor weaves a tightly plotted tale with plenty of suspects and clues to follow. She’s an expert at locked-room murders and this newest book is no exception. I had my suspicions about who the culprit was, but at every twist, I’d change my mind until the last piece of the puzzle fell into place. I highly recommend Murder At An Irish Chipper along with the entire series!
My ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. If you’re a fan of cozy mysteries, Ireland, and red herring, this series might be for you! It’s been lovely to watch the O’Sullivan Six grow up throughout this series and is nice to see how they are turning out as adults one by one now.
“Murder at an Irish Chipper” the 10th instalment in the "Irish Village" Mystery series by Carlene O’Connor. This is one of my many favourite cozy series and I loved this story! A belated honeymoon turns into a busman’s holiday when gardas Siobhán and Macdara Flannery find themselves investigating a dead body found in a fish and chips shop . . .
I always love visiting the village of Kilbane in County Cork and the O'Sullivan Six but this time we head to the seaside village of Lahinch. I love the characters which are well developed. I also like where the series is heading …
The mystery is super interesting and well plotted, and loaded with red herrings. I kept guessing and second-guessing myself on whodunnit right to the very end.
I highly recommend this book to all my cozy loving friends.
I requested and received an advance reader copy of this book from Kensington Books and Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I enjoyed most of this book. I found that the first past of the book is a bit annoying as everyone kept telling Siobhan that she was on holiday & shouldn’t be investigating the murder but after she & her husband were put in charge the story really starts moving forward. It gets more interesting & we get to hear all facets of the investigation. There’s definitely some interesting twists. After some of the facts came out I did definitely suspect who the killer is and got it right. It’ll be interesting to see how the family does with hem being in different places. #MurderatanIrishChipper #NetGalley
Ah the elusive honeymoon! Siobhán and Macdara end up taking a family vacation (was it ever in doubt? LOL), instead of a traditional honeymoon, and they can't get away from not only murder, but solving the crime, in book 10 of the series. But it's one of their own under suspicion, they can't help but to nose in and try to help the obviously overwhelmed local Garda. Add in a few red herrings, and you have a solid little cozy that will have you yearning for fish and chips, so be warned!
#MurderatanIrishChipper #NetGalley is the newest book in this series.
While Siobhan and her family are on vacation, A local resident is found dead, and she can't help but to ask questions, opening up a huge can of worms.
The suspect list is long and before long, she and her husband begin putting the pieces together to find out who the killer is.
I was really surprised at the reveal, and the story kept me guessing until the end.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of the book.
3.75 stars
This series is a lot of fun, featuring Irish garda Siobhan O'Sullivan, her numerous fractious siblings, and her husband DI MacDara. This time out, they are all on O'Sullivans long-delayed honeymoon when they literally (in the way of cozies) stumble over a dead body. She discovers she's not much good at relaxing on holiday when there's a murder to solve.
Divorced fish and chip diner owners are now living across the street from each other running rival cafes and slinging accusations and venom back and forth. And it's a small Irish village where everyone is in everyone else's business. The local DI turns out to be the grandson of one of the murder victims so MacDara and O'Sullivan are officially on the job.
Enjoyable read with lots of give and take amongst the family and the village. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Murder at an Irish Chipper by Carlene O'Connor is a great cozy mystery that is the 10th book in the delightful Irish Village Mystery.
I really like this series and have read all of the books and novellas to date. As always, Siobhán and Macdara Flannery, are involved in a murder mystery as bystanders as well as being officers.
They just can’t help themselves…and another investigation ensues.
I enjoyed this one just as well…hopefully the series will continue on and on.
4/5 stars
Thank you NG and Kensington Books for this wonderful arc and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review and opinion.
I am posting this review to my GR and Bookbub accounts immediately and will post it to my Amazon, Instagram, and B&N accounts upon publication on 2/20/24.
I hate to say it I enjoy Siobhan solving the mysteries more when she was just a bistro owner instead of a gardi. These newer ones don't hit the same way.
Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Publishing Corp. for a copy of "Murder at an Irish Chipper" in exchange for my honest review.
This is the tenth book in the excellent Irish Village Mystery series. The story starts in the village of Lahinch where something awful happens to Vera Cowley a.k.a. Mrs. Chips in her chipper. Her former husband of 40 years has opened his own chipper right across the street from her. She was seen to vandalize the new sign on Corman Cowley a.k.a. Mr. Chips, new shop.
Back in Kilbane the O'Sullivan Six have decided to take a holiday before Eoin opens his farm-to-table restaurant. Only Siobhàn we learn, doesn't know how to holiday and soon gets involved the murder case. DS Liam Healy seems eager to have her help and they are staying with his grandfather John Healy - the town handyman, taxi driver, innkeeper with a pet "like a dog" goat.
There are many suspects John Healy, Tara Flaherty (Vera's former best friend and current girlfriend of Mr. Chips); Sheila Bisby the local fisherwoman who tells a different story every time she's questioned (complicating things is that James O'Sullivan has taken a shine to her); Tom Dowd (Mrs. Chips ordered a vent hood from him, then cancelled and then phoned him irate that he wasn't at the shop installing it - if she didn't call, who did?). Vera was known to spy on people with her binoculars - did she see something she shouldn't have?
Siobhàn loves a locked door mystery - the killer probably got into the chipper while Vera left the door open but how did they get out? All the doors were locked from the inside when the Garda arrived. Siobhàn does a lot of talking without thinking things through properly, digging herself deeper into holes even as her siblings are trying to warn her off.
As there is another death in town, Siobhàn and Dara narrow down the list of suspects. There is a shocking reveal of John Healy's will and an even more shocking suspect and reasons for killing Vera and John. This book was an excellent addition to the series!
Murder at an Irish Chipper is book 10 of the Irish Village Mystery Series.
In this installment, Siobhán’s brother Eoin’s new family restaurant, The O’Sullivan Six, is so close to opening—but waiting on the necessary permits plus the heat of July in the village of Kilbane in County Cork is driving everyone a bit mad.
Macdara Flannery comes to the rescue with a plan—take a holiday by the sea and stuff themselves with fish and chips to support the struggling business of the aptly named Mrs. Chipper.
Their plans get interrupted when a dead body is discovered. Now, with a honeymoon on hold, Siobhán’s and Macdara are hot on the trail of a killer.
It's the middle of summer in Kilbane, Ireland, and Siobhán O'Sullivan-Flannery is waiting for her brother Eoin to open his new restaurant. Everyone is at odds and ends, even the younger O'Sullivans. That is, until Siobhán's husband Macdara returns home one evening and informs them that he's booked a vacation for them in a small town on the seaside. He tells Siobhán that this is their long-awaited honeymoon, and even the family can come. Seeing the excitement everyone has, she agrees and they set off.
The first thing Siobhán wants is fresh fish and chips, but when they arrive at the chipper there seems to be a long line outside, and no one knows why it isn't open. Because of her instincts, she finally finds someone to get the door open, and she and Macdara find the proprietor, Mrs. Chips, dead on the floor in what appears at first to be an accident. But Siobhán isn't convinced, especially when she notices clues that others don't see.
But it's not their case, and she's on honeymoon. At least until she convinces herself -- and it doesn't take long -- that she can find the killer. Now she's in a case in another town, but could it cause more than the trouble it's worth? And is the killer ever going to be caught?
This is the tenth book in the series and I must say that this one is the most intriguing so far. While I love the change of scenery, and the descriptions of the town are aplenty, it's Siobhán I am most interested in. She has an analytical mind, and I love that. She's not convinced this was an accident, although even her husband tries to tell her it was. And the more she thinks about it, the more she's sure it was murder. But who would kill the elderly woman? Her ex-husband is a suspect, even if it appears that he's trying to give her a proper memorial. There are also others in the village she finds suspect, and not everyone around her is happy about it.
When she starts to get closer to the answers, she realizes that someone is watching her and doesn't want her to figure things out. Now Macdara doesn't want to let her out of his sight, and her siblings are enjoying themselves but keeping an eye on her. Will she be able to solve the case before they have to go home? And why can't she just enjoy herself?...
I don't want to say anything else about the book as it might give too much away. But it is one of Ms. O'Connor's best, and she draws you in easily from the first chapter. After all, who reads a mystery unless you want to solve the crime yourself?
I will say that I was completely taken by surprise at one point in the book. While I figured out the murderer shortly before our protagonist did, I was hoping that I was wrong, since I really liked almost everyone in this sleepy little seaside town. (Of course, there are those you don't like). But the ending was delightful all the same. While we are transported to Ireland for a short time, we once again find ourselves involved in the lives of the O'Sullivans, and it is once again just as entertaining as the previous books. The family closeness is endearing. The mystery was fascinating. The entire novel was enchanting. I love this series and await the next. Highly recommended.
I was given an advance copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley but this in no way influenced my review.
This cozy mystery series I also consider armchair travel. I love visiting Ireland with this family with every book and this book was no exception. I can’t wait for more.
“Murder at an Irish Chipper” the tenth book in Carlene O'Connor’s Irish Village cozy mystery series, finds gardas Siobhán and Macdara Flannery on a belated honeymoon – with her brothers and sisters in tow. Although they are supposed to be relaxing, when a body is found at a fish and chips store, Siobhan can’t help getting involved in solving the mystery. But she needs to be careful or she’ll place herself and her family in very real danger.
“Murder at an Irish Chipper” is a nicely done cozy mystery. I love this series and Macdara, Siobhan, and her family – all have grown as characters throughout the course of the series. I’m always a bit nervous about reading books that take characters away from their normal setting but I was pulled into the story from the very beginning. The mystery is well done – almost Agatha Christie-like – with plenty of suspects. Truthfully, I did figure out early on who the killer was but not why the murder was committed and something happened halfway through the book that took me off-guard and had me questioning my guess as to who the killer was. Even with my figuring out who the killer was, I still enjoyed this book and was sad when my visit with Siobhan and family ended.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley.
This is my first time in reading a book in this series and it is also a new to me author. I enjoyed the humor and the fact the storyline was taking place in Ireland, a place I would like to visit one day. I will look for other books by this author to get better acquainted with the characters.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. All words are my own.
Thank you NetGalley and publisher. I have enjoyed this next segment in Siobhan and MacDara’s lives. They have decided to take the family on a honeymoon trip to help save a chipper. Unfortunately they stumble on a murder and Siobhan can’t seem to walk away. Another delightful murder mystery. Can’t wait for the next.
