A memorable political satire about an alternative near past -- when two friends have a fallout when the U.S. legislates "mental parity." Shriver pushes the envelope in this novel, which reflects her long-held positions regarding how people glom onto trends and become "joiners," at the expense of friendships and relationships.

What a read! I'd love to call it "satirical" but too many moments & ideas ring true today. Well written as all her books have been however, I found the "alt" dates to be a bit confusing to follow. I would highly recommend this novel to any better than average bear who enjoys a thoughtful, possibly subversive story.
I loved one of Shriver's books and have not followed her career that closely, but this book was exhausting. I understand the point she's trying to make about cancel culture and mostly agree with her but this book was repetitive. It felt like a screed instead of a story. I did not finish it.
