This book was fine, but it wasn't everything that I wanted in the continuation of this series. I do think that the right choice was made in having a new main character. Alosa's story was done, and this was the best option for continuing the series.
I think I'm simply disappointed with this book. The characters were a little boring--very simple and basic--and the story was predictable. The only interesting thing about it was the climax. It was the best part of the book, and it's the only reason I'm rating it 4 instead of 3 stars.
Daughter of the Pirate King has been on my TBR for a hot minute and reading this standalone set in the same world has certainly moved it to the top of my list. I love a good pirate story and I loved the romance within the story. If you're looking for something very romance-heavy, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it, but if you like your fantasy with a touch of romance this is a fantastic read!
Thank you Netgalley for providing a digital ARC.
After having loved the daughter of the pirate king series, I waited anxiously for over a year for the release of Vengeance.
Having never experienced an audiobook, I enjoyed playing this as I drove and being able to delve into this universe.
Exploring Sorinda’s back story was enjoyable, and seeing her with Kearan was everything I wanted it to be. However, I felt the plot a little out there for me, and it all seemed like such a strange twist with very little actual pirating. My favourite moments from the previous books had been reading about life on the sea and with so little in this book, it didn’t have the same effect as the pirate king books.
I almost feel it would be preferable if the author had used outside characters for this novel, ones we had never met and inserted cameos.
Overall, I’m sad to see the end of the pirate king world!
Thank you NetGalley for the free audiobook.
Unfortunately this book did not hit the mark for me. I read the original duology and really loved it but this book felt unnecessary. Not much seemed to be happening until the very end, the characters felt disconnected. This book felt almost like it was written by a different author. It lacked the banter, character connections and action that the originally duology delivered.
Thank you to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for sending me a copy of this audiobook! All opinions are my own!
This was a wild ride from start to finish, and I absolutely adored every single second of it. It was full of healing and trust, family and love. I adored getting to know each of the characters and their dirty dark secrets. Sorinda was such a relatable character, and her journey of self-love was one that really touched me in a way that books don't often get to.
The romance was so sweet, and I couldn't have been happier with how it developed. All the character internal struggles wrapped up with the external plot made the whole romance that much more high stakes and important in the end. It made things more meaningful and I adored watching it unfold.
Not to mention the intrigue that the whole new plot brought. It felt like a new world entirely, but it had such familiarity of the main series, and it was a wonderful feeling.
This was such a sweet way to continue this series, and I loved this look into such a beloved world!
Incredible narration of a great book. Tricia Levenseller has outdone herself with this title. I love that she has continued her pirate series and our FMC is a POC. Great banter between her and the MMC!
I really enjoyed the first 2 books in this series, and while this one was also good, I would have preferred more time spent on the romance development (I'm wondering if some of that may have happened in the first few books and I can't remember since it's been so long?). I also felt like the conflict in this was resolved a little too quickly and easily. But, overall, I enjoyed it!
thank you to netgalley for the advanced reading copy. I really enjoyed this and will be getting copies for my shop.
I think if I read this a few years ago I would have loved it (as I did with the other 2 books in the series) but alas I am now an old cynical person and any sign of an angsty YA romance and my eyes begin to roll. Overall, it was fine. Nothing bad nothing great. I found I was not as interested in following Sorinda as I thought I would be. But I did want to finish more series this year so I can check this one off the list.
I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
i loved how powerful and strong the women in this book are. i loved the setting and the story line was unique and cool. i liked the narrator and was hooked on this book wanting to always know what’s next. i also really enjoyed the romance subplot in this book, it was really sweet.
I enjoyed this so much that I ordered a hardcover cop of all three books in the series. This is a wonderful read. Thank you!
The continuation of the Daughter of the Pirate King could not have gotten any better.
This latest installment is from the point of view of Alosa's assassin, Sorinda, who is now the captain of her ship on a very important mission. This is the greatest adventure she goes on both emotionally and physically.
Why I loved this book:
~Single POV
~Slow burn
~Paranormal beings
~ Self-realization
~Captain of her ship
~Girl Power
Thank you, NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for the opportunity to arc-read this amazing book in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this! The story was fabulous and the narration was wonderful. My students have already started enjoying the series and I’ve had to get a few additional copies!
Gritty and engaging, Vengeance of the Pirate Queen had me captivated from it's very first line.
I have heard wonderful things about Levenseller and they way she spins a tale. I was not disappointed. The world was evocative and transportive and the characters flawed and multi dimensional. I had not read any of the companion novels to this and I do think I would have benefited from knowing the other characters a little more intimately. That being said, I felt that this worked brilliantly as a stand alone too.
Readers who enjoy intense and gritty world will find themselves at home in this swashbuckling tale.
This was a great read and I now want to be a pirate on the Pirate Queen's ship! I love that this series is about a group of kickass women doing great things and having fun AND finding love. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!
I’m SO glad we got more of this series, and I hope there’s even more to come. Sorinda reminds me so much of Inej Ghafa. She’s also basically Batman. I loved her development throughout the story. It has a really good message that I feel like we don’t see a ton but that everyone needs to hear. The King of the Undersea was a super fascinating villain, I loved him and his undead bois. And KEARAN. It’s the grumpy/sunshine trope, with Sorinda as the grump and Kearan and the sunshine. Also, Roslyn is forever the best character and I want her to get her own book or series when she’s older.
Okay but why did I love this one slightly more than the original duology? lol
Vengeance follows Sorinda, one of Alosa’s closest friends and her fiercest assassin. I honestly think she picked the best character for us to get a new story from. Sorinda was one of the most mysterious characters from the original world and partnering her up Kearan for their own high stakes adventure?! Chefs kiss!!
Sorinda’s character development was perfection and seeing some of the old crew again felt so wholesome. There was also a lot of action and adventure in this one which I appreciated. Also if it matters, I listened to this via an early copy of the audiobook and the narrator did an excellent job!
Overall, I would continue to pick up more books in this world if they were to be released and loved getting more from the characters we already know and love!
Once again, I fell straight in love with the pirates, sirens, and sea monsters!
I have read the prior books in the series but do feel this could be read as a standalone as well.
I absolutely loved seeing the spin off to other characters in this universe of pirate land. I hope this will continue so we continue to see more.
This is young adult fantasy, so just a smidgen of romance, plenty of pirates at sea, and oh the sirens!
If you love any of those things, jump into the first in the series!
I loved this narrator as well. Kristin Bohn, brought the FMC Sorinda to life!
Thank you to NetGalley and MacmillanAudio for an ALC for my honest review.
I LOVE this world and this series. When I saw a new edition (see what I did there) coming out, I knew I needed it! I was not disappointed.
This epic adventure throws you right back into the high seas in a world of sirens and pirates and THE PIRATE Queen. Alosa, the Pirate Queen, has set up her empire, but still faces challenges. When Sorinda gets back from an assassination for her, Alosa has a new mission: one where she will captain a ship into unknown territory. On this rescue mission, Sorinda finds herself stuck with Kearan and if things couldn't get worse... there's a VIP stowaway in the midsts as well.
This story had elements that reminded me of Game of Thrones and I LOVED it. Will Sorinda be able to outsmart the King of the Undersea, rescue Alosa's missing crew, keep her stowaway safe AND fight her growing feelings?
Read on to find out!
What I loved most: pirates, more pirates, oh and female kick ass pirates, zombies, assassins
While the story itself wasn't anything super unique, I still really enjoyed this book. The characters together really did it for me. Tricia Levenseller continues to be one of my favorite authors and this book didn't disappoint.
