Thank you to MacMillian Audio for an audio ARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.
I really loved the narrator of the book and felt like her voice is exact what I had imagined for Sorinda. There were no issues with the quality of the audio either.
5 stars!
"You can't be afraid of the dark when you're the monster lurking in the shadows."
I read Levensellers duology (The Daughter of the Pirate King and The Daughter of the Siren Queen) a couple years ago and LOVED them! Book 3 is back with more pirates, new adventures, and nasty villains.
Queen Alosa needs her number one assassin, Sorinda, to captain a crew and sail north to rescue a missing ship. She is joined by characters from Books 1-2, including the attentive but fierce helsman Kearan. As Sorinda sails north, her crew encounters giant sea creatures, and treacherous waters. Sorinda then accidentally awakens the King of the Undersea, who wants to appoint her his undead queen. She must use all her wit, tenacity, and her numerous blades to defeat him.
Read if you like:
-Pirates of the Caribbean
-Morally grey heroes
-grumpy/sunshine trope
-a chilling villain
*CW- While not gory, there is a lot of violence in the book (Sorinda kills an entire house of bad guys in the opening chapter) so if that's not your thing- be warned!
I was so excited to re-enter the world of Daughter of the Pirate King! Vengeance is definitely a darker tale than the first two books in the world. It follows Sorinda, the assassin from 1 and 2 on a new adventure. I really enjoyed that we got to see an update on Alosa and Riden and we got to see some of our favorite side characters again! Although this is billed as a standalone, I do think it is worth reading 1 and 2 first to understand the background and the relationships between the characters.
The plot started out slower than expected but once it picks up the story was very interesting. You can tell that the writing style has matured from book 1 and in this book we get to see a lot more character development and world building than in the prior books. I am really hoping Tricia Levenseller writes more books in this universe, they will be auto-buys for me.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for providing an ARC of this Audiobook.
Okay so first off, the narrator for this audio was ABSOLUTE PERFECTION!!! They could not have picked a better fit for Sorinda. This book started out with an EPIC opening scene like OH. MY. GOD. Sorinda is a ruthless assassin! It was new to watch her gain a bit of humanity and a softer side throughout this book.
VENGEANCE OF THE PIRATE QUEEN is everything I remember loving about DAUGHTER OF THE PIRATE QUEEN. It's full of murder, tension, magic, high seas adventure, monsters, and characters with so much depth. I listened to the audiobook and honestly had trouble turning it off. I didn't want to stop.
4.5 stars
I was extremely excited when I was approved for an ARC copy of this book. It turned out to be an audiobook and the narrator did a great job!
While this book definitely starts out slow there is a lot of actuon in my opinion in the second half. A lot. I enjoyed reading (well listening) Kearan and Sorindas relationship grow and how they handled everything that came their way. This book has High seas adventures, found family, magic, and some romance. Overall I enjoyed this book and it had some nice closure.
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan for this ARC!
"Vengeance of the Pirate Queen," a standalone YA fantasy romance set in the world of Tricia Levenseller's "Daughter of the Pirate King," attempts to marry Pirates of the Caribbean with The Mummy in an adventurous tale. While the promise of revisiting the beloved characters from the first two books is enticing, this instalment falls short, earning a three-star rating.
The story follows Sorinda, an eighteen-year-old assassin working for the pirate queen, Alosa. Tasked with captaining a crew on a rescue mission, Sorinda must navigate dangerous waters and face deadly sea creatures. The unexpected awakening of the King of the Undersea turns the rescue mission into a fight to save the world, with Sorinda racing to avoid becoming an undead queen.
Unfortunately, the novel struggles to maintain the momentum of its predecessors. I found the book to be slow, lacking the banter, romance, and action that characterized the earlier entries in the series. The chemistry between the main characters, Sorinda and Kearan, felt lacking, with Sorinda's closed-off demeanor creating a disconnect. While the first two books had a vibrant mix of elements, this instalment failed to capture the same magic. Despite these criticisms, I did appreciate the more mature writing style and the improved depth of the characters.
While it offers a fresh perspective and an engaging quest, the pacing issues and a lack of the dynamic elements that characterized the earlier books result in a three-star rating. Fans of the series may find moments of enjoyment, but it falls short of the high expectations set by the first two installments.
Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for access to this advanced listening copy.
The Vengeance of the Pirate Queen is a very enjoyable addition to the Daughter of the Pirate King series. It isn’t necessary to understand the first two books but despite that there is a lot in this book that I really enjoyed. Sorinda was a character that I quickly fell in love with, despite not remembering much from the original two books. The world building expanded on that of the original series in a way that is so interesting. I personally really loved the romance between Sorinda and Kearan. The side characters were all so loveable, especially Rosalind and her relationship with Sorinda and Kearan. Krissi Bohn did an amazing job with the narration! The book is probably a 4 star read for me!
The novel is out now :)

Vengeance of the Pirate Queen
This is exactly what I want from a companion novel to one of my favorite YA duologies. It’s pirates and an assassin! Sorinda is vengance. As the pirate queen’s assassin, she has always been in the background, but now she is being forced out of hiding. Her growth is exciting to see as she’s pushed out of her comfort zone.
Her nemesis Kearan joins her and a great romantic subplot develops. I love this romance. It’s slow burn and gentle.
The audiobook was excellent. I really enjoyed the narrators accent and highly recommend it.
Read this for action, adventure on and off sea, romance, and side characters that steal your heart. Read this for the last sentence!!
This book contains scattered moderate profanity and some kissing.
Vengeance of the Pirate Queen is technically the third book of the series but, unlike the first two books, follows Alosa's assassin as opposed to Alosa herself. I do think that you could read this book more as an independent companion rather that a third book. It was fun, fast paced, and bonus points for having a diverse cover! I did feel that we lacked a bit of character development from Sorinda. She is feisty and a total bad-ass but in some ways did not feel as defined as Alosa did in the first two books. Did the book live up to the same quality as the first two? No, but it was still an excellent fantasy read for those that enjoy shorter, lighter, fantasy novels.
Tricia Levenseller, you are a queen! Everything you write speaks to my soul. I loved learning more about Sorinda and Kieran. They both carved a spot in my psyche while reading Alosa’s story and I thoroughly enjoyed learning what haunts them. Krissi Bohn brought the whole cast to life! I hope we learn more about all of Alosa’s girls!!!
It's been a while since I read the original duology and while I didn't remember exactly all the in and outs of that series, this book did a good job at jogging my memory without it feeling over done. You don't have to read the first books, but there are spoilers within this one and honestly it would only add to your overall enjoyment if you have read the first 2. That said, I LOVED this book. The FMC is so incredibly badass and reminds me why I have a thing for female assassins. She also has a BRUTAL back story and I really enjoy that the author doesn't hold back with that, because it truly shapes the who and why of our MC.
[Actual Rating 4.25] Vengeance of the Pirate Queen is the third novel of the Daughter of the Pirate King series. This novel is a companion to the main duology, so it could be read as a potential standalone; however, it is best to read the other two novels to have a more well-rounded understanding of the universe. The main duology followed the half-siren Pirate Queen, Alosa, whereas this story follows her right-hand personal assassin, 18-year-old Sorinda Veshtas. I enjoyed that her introduction to the reader included scenes of her assassinating others. It showed the audience how ruthless she can be in her missions instead of purely telling the reader that she could do those tasks. As a loyal member of Alosa’s team, I do wish that her loyalty was explored a little more. For this, it is said a little more than shown about why Sorinda is loyal.
Sorinda is tasked with a mission to rescue members of Alosa’s crew. She sets sail on the Vengeance along with 20-year-old Kearan Erroth, her sailing master. During their mission, they accidentally awaken the King of the Undersea, who controls the undead. The two of them have a history which develops into a slow-burn romance. Kearan is an interesting love interest as there are many traits about him that are “average” compared to many love interests in other novels. Their relationship is not over the top with chemistry, but it is still present. Sorinda is an interesting character as she was both likable and not. She goes through a lot of growth in the story, and I enjoyed following her journey. For those that read the duology, like me, the relationship between the reader and Alosa is already established, so I was not sure how Sorinda would compare. While the two characters are very different, they did have some similarities, which was a nice tie between the duology and this story.
Levenseller’s writing continues to be immersive. Her style of storytelling is something I connect with during each reading experience. There is a simplicity to the writing, yet it continues to be interesting. The pacing of this story started slower than expected, especially for a standalone story. For me, it read more as the start of series. It did come together by the end and was a difficult novel to put down. This was easily read in a single sitting. I actually ended up both reading the printed version and listening to the audiobook version. I loved both types and felt the narrator did an amazing job. Levenseller continues to be an enjoyable author and I cannot wait to read more from her in the future.
**I give a special thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this entertaining novel. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.**

This was narrated by Krissi Bohn who done an absoulty stunning job on each characters voice, even when it came to the mens voices you just knew which voice was for who and don’t get me started on Roslyn i think that was her name you can indeed tell she was a younger person. Listening without a physical copy was quite nice, kinda felt like i was reading the book myself. The narrator matched the experiences perfectly, the emotions and the actions were great. The pacing was good i mean it did not take me long to read said book.
“…I do not get afraid. I am what men fear.”
― Tricia Levenseller, Vengeance of the Pirate Queen
I really did enjoy this book, loved being back in Alosa’s world again and learning about her Assassin Sorinda with her upturned passed but also her travel companion Kearan. All of her crew on the ship she was captaining was amazing i mean anything about a womens pirate crew is amazing. I did however get a bit confused of the story line, i wont say to much as spoilers but i wish it made more sense to me.
Thank you Macmillan Audio and Netgalley for this audio ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
3.5/5 stars
This is a standalone book in the world of Daughter Of The Pirate King. However, reading the duology first, helps to give you the character build up and how they fit into this world.
This book follows Sorinda, the notorious assassin for Alosa, the private queen. She is now the captain of a crew Alosa set up at the end of book two.
In this book there is adventure, love story that enfolds, deadly sea creatures and so much more.
It took a while for the story to get moving. It was hard getting invested into this story for me. I loved the duology and most of Levensellers work. For some reason this just was hard to hold my interest. The ending was good though and once it picked up, it was a little better.
The narrator did a great job and the audiobook is great quality work.
This 3rd book in the Daughter of the Pirate King series follows a new main character, Sorinda, as Alosa the Pirate Queen sends this fearless assassin out on her first mission as the captain of her own ship, to rescue a crew that went missing at sea. It's empowering to watch Sorinda grow into a leader, and also learn more about her past and how she became so tough. Her helmsman Kearan still has a crush on her, but is patient and kind and looking out for her, and young Roslyn is growing up and becoming independent, hiding out as a castaway on Sorinda's ship. These books have lots of great adventure and drama and even a touch of magic but it's the fantastic characters who really keep me enthralled in this series.
The narrator of the audiobook, Krissi Bohn has a beautiful voice and accent, she was perfect as the narrator of Sorinda's story.
**4.5 stars**
It took me a minute to get into this one. I wasn’t sure where this story was going to go.
I really wish I would’ve reread the series before this book because I forgot so much!
I felt that the beginning of the story was very slow but it finally picked up about 40% of the way through and I liked it a lot!
I liked the FMC’s character. I know it was YA but felt it could’ve benefited from being adult with a few more adult themes!
I really enjoyed the narrator! The audiobook was done very well!
What an adventure!
It felt so good to be back in this world and on the High Seas with a pirate crew. I loved this cast of characters, both new and old.
With a truly chilling villain and an army of the Undead, I was on the edge of my seat.
There was a tiny touch of romance, battles on the ocean, sea monsters and more.
It was just so great to revisit. I hope there are more stories to come.
I listened to the audio and I can't recommend it enough!
4 1/2 ⭐️
Vengeance of the Pirate Queen is the third book in the series by Tricia Levenseller. I had not read the first two books, but had no problem reading this as a stand-alone. I will be going back to read the first two books in this series.
The story opens up with the FMC, Sorinda, on an assignment. From the get go it’s action packed! She’s ruthless and I held my breath at anticipating what was going to happen next. It absolutely captured my attention right away. Overall I enjoyed this fun pirate adventure!
The narrator Krissi Bohn gives an incredible performance! I was completely captivated into the world of pirates, sirens, and monsters!
Thank you to Netgalley and MacMillan Audio for my advance listening copy. All thoughts are my own.
When I heard about this book I was so excited and it definitely didn't disappoint!
Sorinda is tasked with captaining her own ship to journey to a mysterious island in order to rescue missing girls from Alosa's crew. But she's an assassin, not a captain, and she likes it in the shadows. Kearan, the reformed drunk who may or may not have gotten over his unrequited crush, has been deemed the helmsmen of this mission-something Sorinda is absolutely NOT happy about.
As the two work together to make it to this island in one piece, we learn more about their backstories and what happened to make Sorinda so closed off and Kearan turn to booze. I enjoyed that they got to know each other better throughout the story, but the romance aspect progressed verrrrry slowly. However, I think they both had a lot of character growth from when we met them in the Pirate King Duology to now, and I think I even like Kearan more than Riden!
This was a great addition to the previous books and I can't wait to see what comes next!
This was almost a 4.5, but I liked the original duo a tiny bit better.
I actually reread the first 2 before reading this one. I didn't end up having to, this would have been fine with reading them a long time ago, but I'm so glad I did. This book felt more like a spin off, it followed a different main character (Sorinda) but there were a lot of references to the relationships between the characters and plot lines in the prior books.
This book (obviously) takes place mostly on the sea. There is a lot of action, adventure and sea creatures. It was easy to follow and fun, there was a lot of nautical talk but it was "dumbed down" enough for people not familiar with the terms to understand them. Sorinda is hired by Alosa to rescue some crew that went missing and it takes them on a journey none of them were expecting. While a lot of this book did take place on the sea, some of the more important parts took place once Sorinda and crew started to figure out what happened to the missing crew members. It was exiting and action packed, but I don't want to give anything away. I was really on the edge of my seat near the end when everything seemed to be going wrong.
I really did like Sorinda. We didn't get her full story in the original duology so I loved getting to hear her backstory. She started closed off, but we really got to see her open up throughout the book. Kearan was wonderful as well, we know from the first books that he kind of has a crush on Sorinda but she is not interested. He is so patient and understanding. I think one of my favorite characters was Roslyn. Her father worked on Alosa's ship in the first books and she is his child. She stows away on Sorinda's ship and ends up being such a joy for the book.
The narrator of the audiobook was wonderful. She really sounded like what I thought Sorinda would sound like. She brought her as well as the rest of the story to life!
I'm not sure if there will be more books in this series, but I would love to continue reading books set in this world!
This story follows Sorinda, an assassin for Alosa who must captain a crew for a rescue mission with a sailing master she despises. Sorinda has to put personal feelings aside before she winds up becoming an undead queen.
One thing I absolutely love about Levenseller is the way she writes complex female characters. Sorinda is an absolute force when it comes to her killing abilities, but the scars of her past means Sorinda constantly grapples with her mental health.
I also really enjoyed the male love interest, Kearan. Even though he always wears his heart of his sleeve when it comes to Sorinda, he only serves to be a safe space for Sorinda. Kearan is a beast of a man, but he’s 100% a cinnamon roll.
While Sorinda and Kearan stole the show for me, there’s no shortage of action and utter shenanigans in this book. This is a fast paced story that kept me on my toes. I truly felt like I was one of the crew and wanted to also kick some serious booty!
