Betrayal is the seventh book in the Robin Lockwood series by Phillip Margolin. I have not read the previous books yet and found this to be easy to read as a standalone mystery. I will definitely be reading the other books soon because I really enjoyed this one!

First off, this was a quick read because I could not stop! I found the story to be absolutely captivating and totally engaging. I loved that this is a crime book told from the perspective of a defense attorney. I think it’s fascinating to learn about their processes and how they defend their clients.

I thought the characters were interesting and engaging. The story was so well written and I could not get enough of it! So many twists and turns! This is definitely a book to read!

I loved the narrated by Thérèse Plummer. Wow, just wow!!!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Betrayal by Phillip Margolin is the seventh book in the Robin Lockwood series. Robin is a well-known and distinguished defense attorney in Portland, Oregon. Ten years ago, while going to University, she made a living as a mixed martial arts fighter. She gave that up when she was knocked out and ended up with a concussion. The fighter that knocked her out of the profession was Mandy Kerrigan. Kerrigan is at the end of her career, but then she is arrested for a quadruple murder. When Robin finds out that she will be using a court appointed lawyer, she requests the judge give her the case. Robin is sure that Mandy didn't do it, and with her investigator and herself, she follows all the evidence and her intuition to do her best to prove that someone else could have been the murderer.

Betrayal is a well written and plotted legal thriller. I have enjoyed all the books in this series, and although each story is contained within the covers of the book, I recommend you read them all in order to follow Robin's personal and professional growth. In a previous book, Robin's husband was killed during one of her cases and she is finally ready to date again. As the investigation plays out, there are more than a few suspects. The family has a lot of flaws and there could have been any number of people who wanted one of more of them dead. Of course, once a case goes to trial and someone has been indicted, the police stop looking for anyone else, but that doesn't stop Robin. There are plenty of twists in this one with several red herrings. I was invested in this story and wanted to know who killed the family. The evidence seemed to lead in one direction, but knowing Phillip Margolin, the obvious killer would not be the one. I was surprised at the final reveal. I love how Robin puts things together, and how her brain works. This was another enjoyable Robin Lockwood story. Once again, the audiobook is narrated by the wonderful Thérèse Plummer. Her voices, expression and storytelling are excellent and added to my enjoyment of this book. If you enjoy listening, then I recommend you go the audiobook route for this book and series.

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC of this novel. I've been a long time fan of Phillip Margolin, being a fan of legal thrillers, and was excited to get access to the audio version of this novel. I enjoy reading the Robin Lockwood series and was not disappointed in this most recent addition. Given the myriad of potential suspects, trying to identify the guilty party was not easy. There are so many characters and complex twists but as usual, Margolin is able to keep you interested.

Even though this is the 7th of the Robin Lockwood series it can be read if you've not read others, which is always a plus. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys some good suspense and courtroom drama!

I want to thank NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for providing this book for review. I want to make it clear that all the opinions in this review are my own.

I wanted to read an exciting legal thriller, and Betrayal by Phillip Margolin exceeded my expectations. The story revolves around a family that is brutally murdered, and there are several potential suspects. However, the police quickly focus on Robin Lockwood's client as the primary suspect. Despite the lack of solid evidence against her, the prosecuting attorney targets her due to her previous actions. Although Betrayal is part of a series, it can be enjoyed as a standalone novel. The current murder case and trial take center stage, and once you are introduced to the intelligent Robin, you will be eager to learn about her earlier cases.

I enjoyed this story, but found it a bit jumbled in my opinion. This may be because this was my first Robin Lockwood book, and this is #7 in the series, so there are probably things others that follow this series would understand where it was confusing for me. I did like the narrator, and enjoyed the book. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I was more familiar with the MCs. I want to thank the author, the publisher, and Netgalley for giving me a copy of this audiobook, in return for an honest review.

Robin Lockwood might be a defense attorney now, but before that, she was an MMA fighter. Her MMA career ended after she was knocked out by Mandy Kerrigan. Mandy is now down on her luck and desperate for help. She has been charge with murder of Margaret Finch, a lawyer for some shady folks, and her family. Once Robin starts looking into the lives of the Finch family, it turns out a LOT of people had reasons to go after them. Throw in that the guy she just started seeing is the opposing lawyer, and this is just a tricky case. So the real question is, whodunnit?

I haven’t read any of this series but plan to rectify that very soon. I enjoyed the writing style and the personality/inner thoughts of Robin. I also found that although I was not happy that this family was murdered, I really ended up not liking any of them. They were all morally grey or just bad people. I will say that I had a suspicion of who the killer was prior to the end. That didn’t spoil it for me at all, though. How the plot came to fruition was well done. As I had an audio version of this, I’ll add the narrator was very good. If you like a good suspenseful mystery, I recommend this one and probably the whole series. I gave it a four out of five stars.

When I requested this audiobook I had no idea this was the 7th book in a series but I’m so glad I did. This book was engaging and fast paced. Essentially it is able to be read as a standalone and it is such a fun book! Also the narrator brings this story to life incredibly!

I really enjoyed this audiobook, it was interesting and I feel smarter for having listened to it. I like that two of the characyers were MMA fighters, which is not a topic I have read about before, and that made it more interesting. I love that the book dove into law, but it was explained in such an easy way to be interesting. The mystery of this built up throughout the story and I enjoyed it to the end.

Thank you NetGalley and Phillip Mongolian for this audio ARC!

This was a good solid read. Story line was great, characters awesome!! The narrator was great also.

Robin Lockwood is a pretty impressive/bad-ass main character. Who wouldn't love a former rising MMA fighter, turned prominent defense attorney? This book revolves around her need to defend none other than her formal rival (who ended her MMA career no less) Mandy Kerrigan. Mandy has been arrested for a quadruple murder of an entire family. The Finch family is no normal family though. The matriarch was a lawyer who worked for Russian maffia, the husband owed a ton of money to a bookie and a son who sold illegal performance-enhancing drugs to Mandy Kerrigan. The plot thickens and draws you in. It's quick-paced and tension-filled. It doesn't disappoint.

I listened to the audio version of this book narrated by Therese Plummer. Ms. Plummer is one of my very favorite voice actors and she did an exceptional job on this (as always).

This book kept me interested from beginning to end. It had a lot of characters, which I thought would be a problem for me (thank you, fibro fog), but it really wasn't an issue. The characters were recurring often enough that it helped me keep them straight. This was my first book by this author, but I am definitely open to reading more by him now. There was violence, murders and courtroom drama in this legal thriller. Highly recommend.

Thanks to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for the gifted copy. All thoughts are my own.

I really enjoyed this book, it was a solid whodunnit in the old-fashioned sense. It had a reliable narrator, and gave enough clues that an attentive reader/listener could likely piece it together. Honestly, I kept waiting for a “twist” like so many authors put in, and there wasn’t one that you couldn’t see coming, the kind so many suspense authors seem to use nowadays, in the vein of Lucy Foley or Gillian Flynn. It was just good, Nancy Drew-style sleuthing, which I actually found so refreshing. The narrator was excellent, easy to understand, and determine which character she was voicing. I havnt read a Margolin in decades and now I’m trying to figure out why!

I really enjoy this main character, Robin Lockwood. I have read several in this series. She is smart and she has a big heart. I think that is her most attractive trait.

In this tale Robin is trying to save someone from her past from a murder conviction. Robin used to fight professionally as a cage fighter. (Which I found very fascinating!) This is how she paid for law school. Now, one of her competitors has been arrested for murder, not just any murder, but a prominent lawyer and her family. The further she investigates, the more she realizes, not all is as it seems.

There are places in this story that I had a bit of trouble. And it could have been me zoning out because, well, life! Especially in the beginning, this story is a bit disjointed. I will be honest, I got a bit lost. Lots of characters and different parts of the story coming out with different voices, BUT, I had faith in this author. And did he ever tie this novel together with a bang. Once I got vested, this story did not stop and I enjoyed every minute.

The narrator, Thérèse Plummer, is one of my favorites. And she nailed this novel.

Need a very good law investigation, with a bit of cage fighting….this is it! Grab your copy today.

I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review.

ARC audiobook provided in exchange for an honest review.

I really liked the narrator’s voice and she completely encompasses all the characters perfectly! It was so easy to listen to for hours at a time and I finished in two sessions! I haven’t read other books in this story but felt like it worked really well as a standalone since I didn’t feel like I was missing any crucial details or information. It would have been nice knowing a little more of their backstories, but I’m sure that’s covered in the earlier books. I would definitely recommend to anyone who like police procedurals and mysteries!

I was quiet hooked from the start. The plot and storyline were quite interesting. I did find it a bit underwhelming but overall I did enjoy the writing style.

Robin is a lawyer. She used to be an MMA fighter. Actually, the woman that she last fought and lost against, she is now defending for a murder of a family of 5.
Kerrigan swears she didn't kill the family, but the odds are stacked up against her. After all, she was seen beating up the son at a night club for selling her bad drugs and she was also seen on the porch of the family's house around the same time that the family was murdered
This family has some shady dealings, so if Kerrigan didn't kill them, who did
Can Robin save Kerrigan. Kerrigan is up against the death penalty if found guilty
