Woah, I couldn't put this one down! Betrayal is very readable as a standalone. I've read every book in this series and this entry is one of Phillip Margolin’s best!! 4.5⭐
A lot happened in ten years. When Portland defense attorney Robin Lockwood was a law student, she was also a professional MMA fighter. "Rockin Robin" jumps at the opportunity to be in a televised match in Las Vegas to fill a spot when another fighter had an injury. Her opponent, Mandy Kerrigan a second contender for world champion is on another level and knocked Robin out in the first round.
Today, Kerrigan is no longer a champion. She's struggling in the arena and in life. She's been charged with quadruple homicide for murdering the entire Finch family.
Betrayal brings both women back together although Kerrigan doesn't remember Robin at first. Robin is passionate about this case. It's Kerrigan who made Robin realize that her arena was inside the courtroom and not in the octagon cage. Robin wants to represent Kerrigan in this capital case.
I went in blind and loved it! The flashbacks, everything. Kerrigan's case is intriguing and involves multiple mysteries. There are quite a lot of characters but they're easy to tell apart, I have no problem keeping track of who did what. In some ways, I enjoy Robin's investigative team as much as I enjoy the court scene. There's good character development and it's very interesting that Robin's love interest is a prosecutor. Overall, very thrilling and the pace was great!
Thérèse Plummer is terrific. Absolutely perfection! I've always enjoyed Plummer's performance and she's one of my favorite narrators. I prefer her reading THIS book with a more serious tone rather than quirky characters in romance novels.
Thank you Macmillan Audio for the ALC.
4/5 stars
Thank you Macmillan Audio for the advanced listening copy!
Many years ago, defense attorney Robin Lockwood was a successful MMA fighter, whose career came to an abrupt end after being knocked out by Mandy Kerrigan. Suddenly, the tables have turned and Kerrigan is arrested for the quadruple murder of attorney Margaret Finch and her family. After Robin decides to represent Kerrigan, it soon becomes clear that this case is less than straight forward, with Russian mobsters and illicit substances in the mix. Can Robin clear Kerrigan's name before she's convicted, and can she keep herself safe while doing so?
I loved Phillip Margolin's last book, MURDER AT BLACK OAKS, so I was super excited when I got this one, and it did not disappoint! I'm planning to go back and read all of the Robin Lockwood backlist, because I love her character! These books are so fast-paced, with mostly short chapters and a ton of characters to keep track of. I found both of them a bit confusing at first, but give it time! It will all make sense as you move forward and the story will be all the better for it! This was a fun police procedural, and I loved how the trial was done, especially on audio! Will definitely pick up more of these in the future!
Betrayal was a quick, fun read by author Phillip Margolin. I ‘read’ the audiobook version—thought the narrator did a great job going back and forth between characters.
Robyn Lockwood is not just a kick-ass attorney, but also a Kick-ass MMA fighter... or at least she used to be... that is until Mandy Kerrigan knocked her out in a Vegas fight, causing her to stop her fighting career and focus on her law school. So when Robyn sees Mandy is headlining a fight nearby, she cant help but attend (asking her new love interest to come along for the entertainment). The next day, however, Robyn receives a call from the police department explaining the Mandy Kerrigan is requesting her legal counsel. Now Robyn must work to clear Mandy's name, and work to keep her personal relationships alive after another hitch is thrown into her life.
I enjoyed this book, and found that it followed a very similar structure to Law and Order. I found it to be enjoyable, although slightly predictable, however I will admit I found myself guessing different murders throughout my time listening to the book. Overall, the audiobook was enjoyable, and easy to listen.
Thank you for the opportunity to listen to the book, I thoroughly enjoy Robin Lockwood as a strong, female character and appreciated the premise of the story. Like many others I figured out who the killer was early but still enjoyed the ride, as I know my patrons will enjoy this story. I wish the author would further develop the story, which is ripe for more detailed investigatory story lines. Would like to see Alan Chen pop up as a recurring character, he has a story too good to not develop.
At the beginning, I thought there were too many characters for me to remember, but I overcame that and actually enjoyed this book. This is my first Phillip Margolin read and I will be reading more. This type of mystery genre is one of my favorites—it’s comforting to me to read. I love thinking it all over in my head as I’m reading—“if he did this, then maybe…” and “oh, she definitely did it!” and “what if…?”
I listened to the audiobook. I really liked the narrator’s voice and speed of reading. It was easy to follow and exciting to listen to. I would definitely listen to her again.
Rated 3.5 stars so rounded up to 4.
This is the seventh book in the legal thriller series from Phillip Margolin. Robin’s past comes back to the forefront in this suspense thriller when she goes into the locker room to say hello to a former MMA fighter that pretty much ended her career and set her on the path to concentrate on the law. When this fighter gets arrested for murder, she turns to Robin to help her and the fast paced action never quits. While each book is a stand alone, the lives of the lawyers and investigators contiue so I would definitely read them in order. You won’t want to put this audiobook down!
I have become such a big fan of Margolin's Robin Lockwood series. Robin, a former MMA fighter now lawyer now defends Mandy, the person she lost her last fight to, who is accused of a quadruple homicide. There is an endless amount of suspects who wanted at least one member of the family dead. Robin will have the fight of her life in court, especially since the DA is her new love interest. I love Therese Plummer as a narrator and she does an outstanding job with Betrayal.
Phillip Margolin always writes a solidly plotted, well-characterized, intelligent legal thriller and Betrayal is no exception. A Robin Lockwood mystery, this book works equally well for a first-time reader or a fan of Margolin's other books.
I enjoyed the subject matter which related to two topics I didn't know well before this book: MMA fighters and staged auto accidents. How can these two disparate subjects be related? In a very interesting way, by the nicely intertwining plots and skillful writing of one Phillip Margolin.
I had an inkling where this book was going but it was still extremely fun getting there. I loved the unique subject matter and the crisp audiobook narration. This book solidifies Margolin as a must-read mystery author for me, and I hope more of his anudiobooka are done with this narrative!
I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy this book with many aspects I don't usually like in stories, like the mafia, courtroom procedurals, and MMA fighting. This was fast-paced and plot-driven, with a good twist at the end. I suspected the true killer from the beginning because of one little mentioned detail, so it wasn't such a big surprise, but how it all fit together was eye-opening. Great story.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook.
Entertaining addition to the Robin Lockwood series. Totally farfetched.... but entertaining. Should be a 3. Butt voted up for Phillip Margolin.
Betrayal was an incredible read with fascinating characters. The legal plot was incredible. I am ready for the next in the series.
I was really in the mood for a good legal thriller and Phillip Margolin’s Betrayal more than filled the bill. An entire family is murdered and there are multiple people who had a motive to kill one of them, but the police immediately zeroed in on Robin Lockwood’s client. The evidence against her was definitely circumstantial but her past actions made her such a likeable suspect that the DA had no qualms about indicting her. While Betrayal is part of a series it easily reads as a standalone. The current murder and trial are all that matters and once you meet Robin and her brilliant insights you will want to go back and read about some of her other cases.
Well written, integrated story with a good mix of mystery, suspense and procedural elements. I figured out the who dunnit but felt like it was still a good twist and enjoyed the relationship growth. Overall an enjoyable read. Would have liked a little grit and some twist/cliffhanger ending to lead into a sequel.
I read (listened to actually) an advanced readers copy of Phillip Margolin’s forthcoming book Betrayal. This is the second Robin Lockwood novel I have read, it is a enjoyable legal thriller, not necessarily at the intensity of a Lincoln Lawyer courtroom tale, but easy to read, always interesting, and well, just fun. It has a few twists, I only have minor quibbles with the story and the outcome. I was kind of surprised that Robin didn’t figure out the prosecutor’s final piece of evidence, And the resolution came perhaps a bit too easily. That said, it was a fun read, Moreover, the audiobook is done well, The narration was quite good.
Good murder mystery/investigation.
I love it when all the pieces fit at the end. No open ending, no unresolved clues.
I also love to follow the investigation and especially the court room drama. Great at both.
Characters are interesting and very likeable. A romance takes up a minimum of content but sweetens up the characters. Content is all about the mystery etc and not a lot of flowery descriptions. I like Margolis' style.
Margolis never disappoints me.
I was given this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Robin Lockwood is back, and fortunately for me, I was given an advance audio copy of Betrayal by NetGalley and Macmillan audio in exchange for an honest review. It is the first book in this series I have heard and hopefully it won’t be the last.
There has been a mass murder. An entire family was shot to death by an unidentified intruder, and the bloody scene was discovered by a teacher who came to work with the family in support of their teen aged daughter.
There is a quick arrest of a female fighter/ boxer who maintains her innocence. Enter, attorney Robin Lockwood, along with her assistant and her investigator, who find a defense difficult to mount, given a top notch prosecutor who just happens to be Robin’s love interest.
Potential perpetrators abound. Each with good reason to want at least one family member dead and gone . The character description and detail was superb. If the defense can show reasonable doubt, maybe Mandy Kerrigan, the accused will be acquitted. Is Robin barking up the wrong tree? Maybe Mandy is guilty.
This audio book held my interest throughout on a very long car trip. It might have been a five star read if not for a clue that smacked me in the face long before Robin and company figured it out. And I’m not a lawyer nor a detective. Four well earned stars for an engaging and original who done it with a cast of
suspicious characters that will keep you guessing. The audio edition will be available on November 7. 2023. Look for it.
Fighter turned lawyer fights her way to the truth in this fast paced action packed murder mystery. This is Robin Lockwood series books but reads great as a stand alone novel as well. Great plot twists with many "suspects" leaves you asking "who dun it?" right up until the end. Looking forward to picking up another Robin Lockwood novel. If you enjoy following along a series that can be read together or on their own you will definitely enjoy this series.
This was a good book I had it as an audio book and it has a lot of characters and a lot of back and forth. That’s why it’s a 3 star for me but overall it’s a good story. It’s crazy to think how connected to people you are even if you don’t realize it. The impact these people have on you and you on them. Which is what this is about. When one of these people steps out of place and has ties to the mob what trickles down can be well…. Deadly. Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me access to this content.
Thank you Netgalley for the advance audiobook copy of Betrayal by Philip Margolin in exchange for an honest review. This was an interesting book that had a lot of threads going that eventually turned into a beautiful braid, or story. I enjoyed the twists of this who-dunit and was surprised to find out who the killer was. A very enjoyable read.
