Though the point of view of this book is a little strange - the entire thing is written in past tense by a single narrator, the overall story is so sweet that it is forgivable.
Katherine Center delivers another heartwarming gem with The Rom-Commers, a story brimming with charm, humor, and emotional depth. The novel follows an endearing protagonist navigating life’s unexpected challenges while finding love and rediscovering joy in the most surprising places. True to Center’s signature style, the characters are vividly drawn, the romance is heartfelt, and the journey is both uplifting and deeply relatable.
With witty dialogue, poignant moments, and a perfect blend of lighthearted fun and meaningful themes, The Rom-Commers is a delightful read. It’s a must for fans of Katherine Center’s feel-good storytelling and anyone craving a story that leaves you with a warm, satisfied glow.
This book was an absolute delight. I loved all of it, and laughed and cried my way through.
The characters were lovable. So incredibly lovable. As a reader, I could see their (glaring) flaws—even when they couldn’t yet. And every time, they got there eventually, only to work on the thing/issue that I was judging my them on.
There was communication. Miscommunication. Banter. Medical issues. An overwhelming and constant sense of dread if you know someone with a specific medical condition/disease that has a very specific symptom (saying more might spoil, so I won’t). Family. Found family. Putting other people first even when you don’t want to.
I would read this again so many times. Easily a top 5 book this year for me.
Katherine Center knocks it out of the park on another rom com! The two characters in this one had a great dynamic and I loved the grumpy/sunshine trope in this one
This was one of my most anticipated reads of the year, so I think there’s a good chance my expectations were too high, but I was a bit disappointed. I didn’t especially like the characters or agree with or believe a lot of the conflicts between them. And at the very least one person didn’t apologize who definitely should have. I also am just not a huge fan of using getting drunk as a plot device to get characters to express themselves… and that happened twice 🤷♀️
I did really appreciate the epilogue and that probably bumped it up a quarter star for me! And I think I’m being a bit harsher on it than I would normally be since I was so excited about it, so I wouldn’t discourage you from reading it, but yeah, it takes up the spot of last place for Katherine Center for me 😕
I enjoyed this book a lot. Enough happens to keep it interesting and moving forward, but it’s darker than one would expect from the cover. Heavy topics and parental death are covered.
I swear I already submitted a review but I guess I didn’t.
I loved this book. It was so funny, so sweet, and the perfect amount of spice. I truly have no notes. I have highly recommended to so many of my bookish friends.
The Rom-Commers is a romantic comedy about a screenwriter who was hired to help ghostwrite a romantic comedy with a famous screenwriter. While he does not really believe in love or love stories, she turns his life and opinion upside down. It was colorful and enjoyable despite all of the not-great situations they had lived through.
As readers, we have an expectation going into Katherine Center's books and I'm pleased to say, The Rom-Commers definitely delivered.
When two characters are thrust together, Emma, there to rewrite a screenplay from a famous, and rather grumpy, writer and said writer, Charlie, not wanting to mold his work into one of romance, sparks DO NOT fly. In fact, Charlie believes his script is fine as is while Emma feels it's an abomination to all romance stories in the world.
With top tier banter and a grumpy x sunshine pairing, this story has a lot going for it. The characters themselves are each dealing with their own personal battles. There was a good mix of laugh out loud moments and serious ones.
This is a delightful read. IF I were a rereader, I would definitely dive back into this story.
Thanks to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for a copy of this audiobook. All thoughts in this review are honest and my own.
Emma Wheeler has always wanted to be a screenwriter. Well technically she is but she hasn’t been able to work at it film time. As it turns out she has been taking care of her father for years. She loves being her dad’s caregiver but a career break would be ok, well maybe? She hasn’t let herself believe, she could make it as a full time, screenwriter. An opportunity comes up and between Emma, her father and her sister, decide she has to take the opportunity. They almost literally have to laugh her out the door. But it’s the opportunity of a life time to help Charlie Yates.
Emma heads out to California. She leans on her family and starts the next faze of her life. She is to live in Charlie’s house but when she gets there, he seems to not even know she was coming. With things off to a shaky start Emma, decides to persevere. She makes strides each day to get things done. She works hard to get him to be honest and work on this project. There are tough days and good days but, with her dad taken care of at home, she is able to sore. Katherine Center tells such a good story of love, loss and taking chances. Emma and Charlie are a great match and it was a pleasure to see where there story would end. This was a four star read for me, it had everything I love in a RomCom. I want to thank Netgalley, Katherine Center & St Martin’s Press for my copy of The Rom-Commers, for an honest review. It was my pleasure to read and review this book.
Katherine Center is one of my favorite authors and she did not disappoint. Her characters are well developed and funny as heck. I read this book in two nights and couldn't wait to see how this was going to end. The quick wit between the characters has me laughing and rooting for them to get together. I highly recommend this book. I loved the bright pink cover as well.
Thank you Netgalley and author for this arc. Katherine Center’s Rom-Commers is a heartfelt, deeply emotional romance that blends lighthearted moments with poignant themes. The enemies-to-lovers dynamic between Emma and Charlie, set against the backdrop of their work on a struggling rom-com script, is both captivating and complex. Center masterfully weaves in heavier topics such as loss, guilt, and illness, offering a realistic portrayal of life’s challenges without losing the sense of hope and redemption that defines her storytelling. While the novel has its share of lighthearted, swoon-worthy moments, it also tackles deeper emotional struggles, making for a rich and resonant reading experience. Emma and Charlie’s complicated, messy, yet beautiful journey to love is a reminder that happiness can find its way through life’s darkest corners. Highly recommended for readers who enjoy heartfelt romance with emotional depth.
Katherine Center never disappoints. Super enjoyable quick read with fun banter between the characters .
Overall Rating: 3.5 / 5 stars
This story delves into the complexities of love and loss. Emma Wheeler, a talented writer burdened by her past, finds herself unexpectedly drawn into the world of Hollywood. As she collaborates with the renowned screenwriter Charlie Yates, their professional partnership grows into something more. Art imitates life when the screenplay they are collaborating on mirrors their own romantic journey.
This story shows an honest portrayal of grief and the challenges of caring for a loved one with illness. Emma's journey is both inspiring and relatable, as she navigates her own desires and responsibilities. She could be a little frustrating at times, but aren't we all?
The last 10% of the book got a little too cheeseball for me, but overall, I really liked the story!
Thank you to NetGalley for the eARC to review! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I thought this was very good and I will have to add this to the shop shelves. Thank you for the chance for us to review.
I devoured this book. A grumpy MMC will always be my kryptonite and Charlie did not disappoint. I also love a romance that includes so much emotion and isn’t just all sunshine and rainbows and that’s exactly what The Rom-Commers was. Already can’t wait for Katherine’s next book!
The banter and humor were spot on, and was balanced so well with depth and rawness. I just loved it.
I adored Emma’s family, and how supportive they were of her. I loved how both of them were pulled and stretched in different directions, but they managed to make it out on top in the end. They rose above.
Charlie and Emma are polar opposites that complement each other perfectly. I love the writing team they make, the bond they form, and the love they share. Charlie & Emma were so fun and to follow their story. Their happily ever after was well deserved. Emma & Charlie are perfect together.
Katherine Center has firmly cemented herself on my must-read list. Her romances are everything you want from the genre but elevated. The Rom-Commers was no exception. It was a smart and funny enemies to friends to lovers romance and one of my favorite books of the year. Emma and Charlie are fantastic together - their chemistry is palpable. The dialogue is sharp and witty, and the pacing is perfect. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Katherine Center is one of my fave authors and definitely an auto-buy author for me. Within the first 2 chapters, I was already alll the way in and wanted to give the book a hug already. Center writes characters that are so real and characters you definitely root for. I feel like she's the queen of realistic romance (realistic fiction + romance) :) Our main character, Emma, has been a caregiver for her father who has a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). I thought the TBI representation was great and we also get a sense of what caregiving can look like, especially for young adults caring for a parent. I'm not sure I LOVED Charlie, to be honest, but I loved how Emma put herself out there and SHE loved Charlie. I'm always so happy to pick up Center's books but then immediately sad that it's over. This was excellent in print and on audio!
More like a 3.5. I enjoyed this a bit. A nice fluffy romance, but it wasn't the most interesting couple.
