I felt so many emotions while reading this, which is surprising because I'm usually an emotional cripple. I felt, annoyed, angry, hopeful, giddy, surprised, and happy. A wide range for an emotionless girl. I really enjoyed this book. The FMC was funny, and the girl did not know how to give up! The MMC was annoying/charming... Read the book and you'll see what I mean. I loved the little cameos from characters from other books she wrote. I need to re-read The Bodyguard now. I definitely recommend this if you're in the mood to feel conflicting emotions and ultimately have a fun time with this rom-com. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own of course.
Such a fun book! I loved the dynamic between Charlie and Emma! Charlie was this perfect blend of grumpiness that was so endearing! Something I can never get enough of. Him answering phone calls while accepting awards? Delightful. Emma was this golden retriever of a FMC that was so wonderful! The story was engaging and just so so lovely!
Katherine Center does it again with the cute shall I say… ROM-COM!
Emma, a full time caretaker to her father, and a writer on the side, takes a chance with traveling to LA to work along side her idol of a screen writer Charlie. There’s just one problem… Charlie didn’t know she was coming, or on the same note, doesn’t want her help. Working on a Rom-Com script with your idol for a few weeks shouldn’t be too hard… right?
This story is Grumpy meets Sunshine with a dash of slow burn in all the best ways. It is also a close-door romance, which in this case gives the story more volume in regards to the plot. I loved seeing their relationship grow by doing all the things in the name of research that you would see in a Rom-Com. Which lets be real, when we are reading romance most of the time that is exactly what us readers want, and I feel Katherine Centers writing and this plot did it perfectly.
I loved seeing both Charlie’s and Emma’s growth throughout the story, and the way they banter which made it feel like they’ve know each other years rather than just a few days. From Charlie learning the ropes on a romantic relationship and Emma letting go from just being a caretaker each element of the story clicked together like the best puzzle.
There’s only two things that I wish were different. I do wish Charlie wasn’t such a jerk in some of the more serious events in regards to Emma. Like when she pours her heart out to him and he says very few words. Or when she overhears him and does nothing about it or just pushes it to the side. Or lets him half a half-butt answer to her concerns. Now this did build his character, and it is explained later but he gave off real jerk vibes. The other thing was that the whole screen play they wrote was changed….? I was really confused in this point. Because Charlie wrote a new screenplay telling their story but put her name on it? And that’s the one that got picked up to be made not the one they wrote together? I may be confusing myself, or may he changed some parts of the screen play the wrote together, or better yet, just wrote their story. Neither of these points really affected my rating but just something I wanted to note.
Overall I couldn’t put this book down, and it was such an easy and quick read. I definitely cannot wait to add it to my shelf once its released!
Lovable and relatable main characters, a dynamic and interesting supporting cast, and a love story that feels believable while still maxing out on the swoon factor. Strong recommend! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read this one early.
I love Katherine Center’s writing so much and this book was no exception. The characters were lovable and relatable and the story draws you in. It was a quick read for me as I devoured it. Thank you for the opportunity to read and review!
I really enjoyed this book. Katherine Center has done it again. I have so many emotions. I love the banter between the main characters & we love a good enemies to lovers trope. Charlie Yates is a successful (cocky) writer & Emma Wheeler is not as successful, due to no fault of her own. Emma has been obsessed with Charlie Yates writing and screenplays since forever. But when she’s given the chance to rewrite a romantic comedy script for him, she’s shocked to find that he’s kind of a jerk and he doesn’t believe in love. How are you supposed to write about love when you don’t even believe in it? Charlie is reluctant to take Emma’s help. He doesn’t need help. His script is fine to him. Emma makes it her mission to change Charlie’s mind.
This was such a cute read. Katherine Center has such a way of writing that makes you feel so cozy and at home. And, she always finds a way to bring light to some serious topics that most people will deal with in their lives & she addresses this with such grace & understanding.
4/5 stars!
Overall, this book is a series of hilarious, beautiful, and emotional moments, but is so self-aware at its poignancy that the parts of the story that connect these moments are lazy and not great. 2.5 stars, rounded up to three so you can make your own decision.
I am completely BAFFLED by this book and my reaction to it. The entirety of the book had me questioning whether Center's writing style was for me, but there were a number of moments that kept me hooked and compelled me to finish.
This is my first book by Center and she has a distinct writing style in The Rom-Commers that won't be for everyone. Emma is a writer who is held back by familial circumstances and is given the once-in-a-lifetime chance to help her favorite screenwriter write a rom-com. The problem is, it's not something he's agreed to. I was completely hooked when Emma is watch the video that Logan sent Charlie, and the beautiful prose and emotion that the author conveys really shines for the first time in this moment and I knew that, regardless of the numerous fourth wall breaks, I would continue reading.
Fourth-wall breaks are a tricky thing to do in writing and I find they're incredibly difficult to do well. I find them jarring and it takes me out of the narrative immediately. The mechanics of it always feel a little stilted, lazy, and leaky when it comes to plot. I can't tell if it's meant to be a quirk of character or author. What I also found jarring is that the author uses eavesdropping as a way for Emma to gain knowledge THREE TIMES before reaching the halfway point. I feel like there are better ways to accomplish this. Emma is presented as a wonderfully strong and resilient woman, yet there are moments of insecurity that don't feel true to what she'd be experiencing, especially in the way she presents information gaps to Charlie.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book. Thoughts and opinions are my own.
A trusted friend suggested I’d like Katherine Center’s latest and boy was she right.
It felt like a return to what I loved about Center’s Bodyguard: A strong, funny heroine with reasonable flaws, good banter and a cinnamon roll MMC who would do anything for her.
I’m firmly back on the Katherine Center train and can’t wait to see what she publishes next.
Emma dreams of being a romantic comedy screenwriter, but has been spending her time taking care of her dad who has significant health issues. Charlie Yates is already a famous screenwriter - and Emma just got the chance to re-write a script with him. Emma’s sister drops everything to take over caring for their dad, and Emma heads to L.A. to meet Charlie. Except Charlie, isn’t what Emma expected. He doesn’t even believe in love! Emma is convinced she can change his mind about love and proceeds to do everything she can to show him he’s wrong.
This was a cute romantic comedy with some heavy topics sprinkled in. Emma’s character was sweet and happy, even though she’s been through a lot in life. Charlie’s character was grumpy and mean at times, with soft spots that occasionally peeked out. I wish there was a little more of a romantic spark between Emma and Charlie earlier in the book. It really took until the end for me to feel like they had a connection. This was a great read and is one of my favorite Katherine Center books.
Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC.
I always love a good meta moment, and a rom com about writers writing a rom com definitely fits that! From the beginning of the book I loved Emma. She was relatable and her character was multi dimensional with a sad backstory. I liked this part of the book. I didn’t particularly care for Charlie. The book would’ve benefited greatly from dual pov because the limited amounts we learn about him didn’t sell him for me. He was just too emotionally stunted to make a great MMC. I recommend the book for Emma and her family more so than the romance in this one!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of The Rom-Commers! This was one of my most anticipated releases of 2024. I LOVE Katherine Center and her writing. There were multiple times I laughed out loud while reading this book. I didn’t fully love Charlie’s behavior towards Emma and Emma’s willingness to look past all the bulls**t he threw her way. But I did love how Emma was just herself and Charlie had no choice but to fall in love her. Katherine is very good at telling her stories and going through all the emotions. She writes her characters well that even with the bad, you end up loving them all. Thank you again for this ARC! Give me Katherine’s grocery list, I want to read it all!
I devoured this book and as an avid reader of all books by Katherine Center, I love all them all but this one holds a special place in my heart. Center has a way of incorporating life’s challenges and their vibrant backgrounds into her characters’ stories and I felt all of this in the portrayal of Emma and Charlie, our two screenwriter protagonists. As I’m writing a romance book currently, Emma’s persistence in training Charlie in all matters love and romance (including how to write a rom-com) was formidable and inspiring. Emma’s role as chief caregiver for her father and sister was relatable as was Charlie’s resistance to engage in unwanted feelings. It was such a beautiful story about love emerging from friendship and how our perceptions about ourselves can be incredibly flawed. Loved this!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC! Opinions are my own.
First of all, I want to thank NetGalley and the publisher St. Martin’s Press for the advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I adored it! Book review ✨ 4.5 stars ✨
For this genre, this was a great enjoyable read. I devoured it over the weekend, staying up until midnight to finish it. It definitely has single sitting potential.
My favourite part of the book was the writing. Katherine Centre is a fun, creative and articulate writer. Her style is witty and quick and my most favourite parts of her writing is the banter between characters. Not just the two main characters, but all of them. The way they interact with each other feels authentic and real life. My second favourite part was just the over all detail, and use of figurative language. The book came to life in my mind so easily I just kept turning page after page.
The story was cute and had all the appropriate elements of a good rom com. From the unlikely and unlikable MMC to the tragic cause of heartbreak to the quintessential happily ever after. The book included some common tropes like the Celebrity trope, the friends to lovers (or rather colleagues to lovers), and the miscommunication trope. Now normally miscommunication is not my favourite, but here it was done in a way that didn’t bother me.
I liked that in the epilogue things unwinded in a timely fashion, rather than just an easy quick, everything is perfect in 2 days kind of ending.
So why not a 5star?? There were a few things I took issue with or didn’t love, and while I mostly got past them because I enjoyed the writing so much, I still have to be honest about my distaste for them. Mostly there was a lot of lying that I didn’t think was necessary and the MMC, celebrity screenwriter Charlie Yates was just at times so painfully mean in the way that he insulted the female main character for her lack of success. While at some point in the story this did become a bit of an act to others, the fact that the FMC, Emma was either insulted to her face or overheard this insulting and stuck around made me a bit angry. While Emma clearly has a lot going for her in the strong female category, this part at times undermined that strength. BUT then we do see how it all comes together as part of her character, someone who needs to help other people. Does that justify it, I wasn’t sure. Great writing to be sure, and in the end I think it made sense, but it still made me a little mad.
Overall though, I loved this book. And I will certainly be recommending it to others and on my bookstagram page. I can’t wait to read more by Katherine Centre.
Thank you to NetGalley & St. Martin’s Press for the eARC!
I have been so excited to read this book since it was revealed last year and it did not disappoint! It was funny yet still so swoon worthy. For the most part this book had me laughing & loving every second. I didn’t love the breaks in the story for narration but fortunately it wasn’t too much of a distraction from Charlie & Emma’s story. However, I do love how Katherine Center always adds extra layers to her love stories. The complications of heartbreak & hurt that were written into this story brought about some of the most beautiful lines & lessons. Overall it was an adorable but poignant read. The banter was delightful & the comedy was perfection!

Thank you so much to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for my copy of The Rom-Commers by Katherine Center in exchange for an honest review. It publishes June 11, 2024.
This book is yet another wonderful story in Katherine Center's collection. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, bringing the same readability that makes it IMPOSSIBLE to stop reading. Honestly, I just had to know what was going to happen next, I was always on the edge of my seat.
I adored the characters in this story, and I found the character development to be so satisfying. I loved what I got to learn about screenwriting, and I loved Meryl Streep!
Seriously, just read this book, you won't regret it!
* I received a free copy of this through NetGalley in exchange for a review. *
This is my FAVORITE Katherine Center book so far. I loved all the characters so, so much. (Minus T.J., of course) Seriously though, I just really enjoyed Emma and Charlie. Their story together, but also the personal growth each of them experienced. I loved that this book has the feel-good parts of a true rom-com, but that it was real about the pains of life too.
Thanks to St. Martins and Macmillan Audio for an advanced copy of The Rom-Commers by Katherine Center.
So I just like Katherine Center's books and honestly most of the time they are just okay and I know so much of bookstagram absolutely adores her books and I found The Rom-
Commers to be fine. I didn't love it but there was nothing I didn't like.
The audiobook has great narration and it's just over 11 hours, so it was an enjoyable listen but honestly not very memorable for me.
This book has some deeper topics but I never felt the chemistry between the characters and honestly, I didn't like Emma. She was such a martyr. I know my review is more of an anomaly and I'll continue reading Katherine Center books, but I find them just okay. .
Emma has spent the past 10 years taking care of her father after he was in an accident. The opportunity of a lifetime comes up: rewriting a screenplay with her favorite screenwriter. First problem, she would need to be in LA for six weeks. Second problem, turns out Charlie is a complete asshole.
This book definitely read like a fave rom-com with fun banter between Ella and Charlie and a couple wild situations to bring them together. They start out strictly as colleagues and you don’t really get romantic vibes until later in the book. But they were v entertaining to keep up with. I only wish we had more time in the story with them actually together. You feel all the feels for about the last 1/4 of the book and I was having Ella and Charlie withdrawals today.
📚✨ **Book Review: The Rom-Commers by Katherine Center** ✨📚
I recently finished listening to Katherine Center's The Rom-Commers, narrated by the author and Patti Murin. It's a sweet and light-hearted read that offers a delightful escape into the world of romantic comedy.
Katherine Center's writing is as charming as ever, filled with relatable characters and witty dialogue. The story revolves around a group of friends, each with their own quirks and struggles, navigating love, life, and laughter. Their experiences and interactions are so familiar they'll make you feel like you're part of their circle, rooting for them every step of the way.
However, while the book is enjoyable, it still needs to reach the level of some of the Center's previous works. Some plot points felt predictable, and there were moments when the pacing lagged slightly. Despite these minor hiccups, it's still a solid read that fans of the genre will appreciate.
Overall, **The Rom-Commers** is a fun and heartwarming listen, perfect for fans of romantic comedies looking for a light and entertaining story. 🎧❤️

I’ve read a few other Katherine Center books, so I had high hopes this would be just as fun. It did not disappoint. The premise of the book is good and has heart. This isn’t just an easy story about writers writing a screenplay together. It examines heartache from various sides and gives context to what a happy ending really could look like.
Thanks to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for my honest opinion.
