An enemy to lovers, feel good story that ticks all the boxes for an absolutely delightful day of reading! Two screenwriters are reluctantly thrown together to write a rom-com. That’s the gist..swipe to see a more detailed synopsis. It’s easy to see where this is all headed, and yet the Center delivers another witty, charming story.
I loved this.
Thank you @ stmartinspress. @netgalley and @katherinecenter for the eARC of
#therom-commers out June 11/24.
It's been a little while since I read a whole book in one day. This one just grabbed my attention immediately and I couldn't put it down! Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for a copy of this arc (:
Katherine Center really defines love and the romance genre in this book. Yes, there is always a happily-ever-after, which might be considered predictable, but it's all about the JOURNEY and how we get there. This story really gets you thinking about true love and why we choose to read/watch romance. Emma is a relatable character, full of love and optimism. Charlie is a Hollywood asshole. The two are forced to work together on writing a screenplay, while they learn about life and death, human connection and emotion, and ultimately, love. CHEESEY? Yes, but in a good way! Almost grumpy-sunshine, but not quite. Very heartwarming. A feel-good read that I would recommend to any romance reader.
The Rom-Commers is an absolute delight—a must-read for anyone who loves a good rom-com!
Emma Wheeler's dream of becoming a screenwriter finally gets its big break when she lands a chance to work with her idol, Charlie Yates. But things quickly take a turn when she realizes Charlie is not the romantic hero she imagined—he's cynical, dismissive, and utterly uninterested in the romantic comedy they're supposed to be writing together.
As Emma fights to prove herself and save the project, sparks fly between her and Charlie in a way that even the best rom-com scripts couldn't predict. Katherine Center weaves a charming and hilarious tale of love, friendship, and the power of believing in your dreams.
With witty banter, swoon-worthy moments, and plenty of laugh-out-loud scenes, The Rom-Commers is a refreshing take on the classic romantic comedy. The author's writing is sharp, her characters are relatable, and the chemistry between Emma and Charlie is electric. Don't miss this heartwarming and entertaining read—it's sure to leave you with a smile on your face and a warm feeling in your heart.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press!
As a fan of Katherine Center, I had high expectations going into the Rom-Commers. The one thing that is almost always guaranteed with Katherine's novels is a certain depth and characters that are real and relatable. The Rom-Commers is true to its title. It is a Rom Com. The characters don't necessarily have all that much depth and are a bit disconnected. Despite some characters falling flat I did enjoy the story and did find myself laughing out loud at certain points. Is this my favorite Katherine Center novel? No. Did I enjoy it? Yes. Will I continue to flock toward any new releases from Katherine Center. Absolutely.
I’m not usually a fan of romantic comedies but this was by far the best romantic comedy I’ve read. The characters were likable and the story never slowed and always had something happen. It was heartfelt and I didn’t want it to end. Thank you NetGalley and at martins press for an ARC.
“I fell in love all the time. Just . . . nobody fell in love with me back. Fiction really kind of was all I had in the romance department. But that wasn’t a weakness. That was a strength.”
Those of you who have followed me for a bit know that I tend to gravitate towards thrillers. That’s where I live. They feed my soul. Every once in a while, however, I just need a good rom-com to soothe that thrilled soul. For the second time now, Katherine Center has been the architect of that appeasement.
“He felt real. But more than that: he made me feel real.”
This book was an absolute joy! Funny, romantic, and heartfelt, ‘The Rom-Commers’ had me smilin’ my goofy smile until the very last page. I absolutely loved everything about it! Emma and Charlie are delightful and their supporting cast was perfect in every way.
“He just . . . lit me up. And I missed that light so much. But I guess this was a teachable moment. If you wait for other people to light you up, then I guess you’re at the mercy of darkness.”
The Rom-Commers is the latest romantic comedy by this author who never disappoints. Emma Wheeler is a struggling writer that has sacrificed her career for the last ten years to take care of her disabled father. Her high school ex is her agent and he offers her an opportunity to work with her idol in Los Angeles. Now it’s her sister’s turn to step up and let Emma pursue her dreams. But Charlie Yates, Emma’s writing idol is not all he’s cracked up to be. Gruff and grumpy, Emma must work quickly to establish her usefulness on his latest writing project and if she becomes essential in his life than more power to her. The characters are lovable and people you would really want for friends. The story tugs at the heartstrings with warm fuzzy feelings tinged with heartbreak and frustration that just make the story feel more real. The Rom-Commers is another feel good story that deserves to be on the to be reread shelf. Katherine Center is my go to for feel good romantic comedy. My voluntary, unbiased, and non mandatory review is based upon a review copy from NetGalley.
"The Rom-Commers" was such a fun read! I love Katherine Center's other books, so I was incredibly excited to receive this ARC. "The Rom-Commers" follows Emma and Charlie, where Emma travels from Texas to California to help Charlie write a screenplay for a rom-com. Only there's one problem, Charlie doesn't believe in love. Emma takes on the challenge to make Charlie believe in love so that their rom-com screenplay is successful.
I found the characters to be so lovable. I just wanted to give them both a big hug! They have their own, unique struggles and it was heartbreaking at times to experience their internal struggles with loneliness and feeling unlovable. Charlie and Emma had incredible character development through this story and it came together very nicely. Overall, I gave this read 4/5 stars. Thank you NetGalley for giving me this eARC for an honest review. I would highly recommend this book!
WHAT. A. BOOK. Oh my gosh. I had never read anything from this author before but I simply couldn’t pass up a romance right now. This book was PERFECT! I fell for the characters immediately. I laughed with them, cried with them, and learned with them. The character development was outstanding and I truly fell for Charlie Yates and all his quirkiness. There wasn’t one single boring moment in this book for me and it truly read like a romantic comedy you would watch on the big screen. I will absolutely re-read this book to visit these characters again.
Thank you, Katherine Center, for a wildly romantic book. I cannot wait to read the rest of your work!
Bookworms, gather around for a delightful story that's sure to capture your heart and leave you longing for more. Katherine Center's latest masterpiece, "The Rom-Commers," is an absolute gem that deserves a spot on every book lover's shelf.
As someone who devours books like there's no tomorrow, I can confidently say that Center's work has earned a permanent place on my TBR list. Much like her previous novel, "Hello Stranger," this book whisked me away into a world brimming with captivating characters and enchanting journeys.
Meet Emma Wheeler, a woman who has dedicated the past decade of her life to caring for her father and ensuring her younger sister lives her best life. With a knack for writing screenplays, particularly romcoms, Emma's world is turned upside down when her ex-boyfriend-turned-friend and screenwriter manager, Logan, lands her a gig ghostwriting for the renowned Charlie Yates.
Charlie, a celebrated screenwriter with a string of Oscars to his name, finds himself in a bit of a rut with his latest romcom script. Despite his reservations about working with an anonymous co-writer and critic, Charlie reluctantly agrees to collaborate with Emma. Little does he know, this partnership will not only reshape his screenplay but also his outlook on love and life.
Now, let me tell you, I could rave about "The Rom-Commers" all day long. This book had me staying up until the wee hours of the morning, eagerly flipping pages and shedding tears of joy over the heartwarming dialogue and character dynamics.
Sure, Charlie may come off as a bit of an ass at first, but hey, don't we all have our rough edges? And Emma? She's a shining beacon of goodness in a world that often feels too dark. Her selflessness and unwavering kindness tug at your heartstrings, and as her story unfolds, you can't help but feel a sense of empathy and admiration for her.
The banter between Emma and Charlie is simply sublime, a testament to Center's masterful way with words. Each exchange crackles with wit and charm, making it impossible not to fall in love with these characters.
Speaking of character development, let's talk about Charlie's transformation. From "Charlie before Emma" to "Charlie with Emma" to "Charlie after Emma," his journey is nothing short of remarkable. And Emma? Well, let's just say she gets the ending she truly deserves—a testament to Center's storytelling prowess.
So, if you're in the mood for a rollercoaster ride of emotions, sprinkled with witty banter and sweet moments, look no further than "The Rom-Commers" by Katherine Center. Trust me, you won't want to miss out on this enchanting story.
This is a cute, sweet story about a pair of screen writers working on a rom-com screenplay as they bicker and live out a rom-com plot themselves. It’s fluffy and just fun.
Thank you NetGalley for the eARC.
I think The Rom-Commers might be my favorite book from Katherine Center. I was completely obsessed with this book and was lucky enough to get both the audiobook and digital copy of this ARC.
Emma Wheeler has spent her life taking care of other people and has made herself a side character in her own story. When an opportunity to work with her all-time favorite screenwriter, Charlie Yates, to fix a ROM-COM that can only be described as apocalyptic, her family convinces her to fly to Los Angeles. The only problem, Charlie Yates has no intentions of this script becoming a reality. Emma is not going down without a fight and wants to turn this script into something she can be proud of even if that means teaching Charlie about love.
Emma is perfect as the main character. She was so witty and entertaining. Her comebacks she had during the arguments with Charlie had me laughing out loud. Her character constantly broke the fourth wall and I felt that it added to the story. The chemistry between Emma and Charlie was spot on and I loved their banter discussing the semantics of a ROM-COM.
This book had everything that I look for in a Romance and highly suggest the audiobook. The narrator was perfectly casted for this book and listened any chance I could get. Add this book to your TBR ASAP!
The Rom-Commers releases June 11th.
Thank you to NetGalley, MacMillan Audio and St. Martin Press for the opportunity to review The Rom-Commers. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I would like to thank Net Galley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read this as an ARC. This is a Rom Com about writing a Rom Com. It is about 2 writers, who are supposed to be writing an update of the classic movie, It Happened One Night. Charlie Yates is an established Hollywood screenwriter, who writes action filled dramatic movies. He hates rom coms. Emma Wheeler has some unseen scripts, and an ex boyfriend turned Hollywood agent who wants her to succeed. And she loves Rom Coms. Ok, so we know how this will end, but the getting there is extremely twisty. There are a lot of characters in this story. Emma has a family- a father with a serious medical history, and a younger sister , whom Emma has mothered since their mother died. Charlie has an ex wife , a drawer full of awards and a guinea pig called Cuthbert. He also was diagnosed with cancer 5 years ago and is now in remission. There is a lot going on in this book, and honestly, sometimes, I had a hard time keeping track of everything and everyone. But at the heart, it is a Rom Com, and I love those. I enjoyed this book very much.
After reading some pretty heavy thrillers and historical fiction, this romcom was perfect timing! It’s like when you flip on the tv or streaming and there is “Notting Hill” just speaking to you. (Note: I never skip Notting Hill).
Emma is a screenwriter with a stalled career, when she gets the opportunity to ghost write and fix a romcom screenplay of one of Hollywood’s legendary screenwriters, for anything other than romcom. Well, you can probably figure out how it goes.
Let’s just say the characters are ❤️😘🙌💎. The story is full of heart and comedy, and well, it is itself a romcom about writing a romcom. So, yeah. Romcom lovers of the world come hither and grab this book. You will thank me.

Katherine Center books are an auto-buy for me. Receiving an advanced copy was like Christmas coming early.
The Rom-Commers did not disappoint. The witty banter, the love story and Nora Ephron references knocked it out of the park for me. I loved the story of Emma and Charlie and have found myself talking about this book and lessons I learned from it to many people.
Last year I received an advanced copy of Katherine Center book, Hello Stranger and was giddy for people to read it when it released in the summer. This year, my new recommendation for summer reads will be the Rom-Commers..
I LOVED this book! Pun intended.
This was a true rom-com. It was cute. It kept my attention. I didn’t necessarily know what was going to happen next, but it was still a pleasant easy read that wrapped itself up in a double knot.
There was character development, growth, decent back stories, moments that tugged on your heart, climactic moments, and a fun setting. Highly recommend to anyone who loves a good chick flick!
This is not a book where I imagined I’d be crying at some point. Even though the FMC is a parental caretaker, I simply assumed that she’d be joyful enough and the romance sweet enough that I’d be okay. But then I remembered that this is a Katherine Center book, and I was therefore sobbing between percents 80-90. I should have known better. Katherine Center has this supernatural knack to blend whimsy and sadness, quirkiness and vulnerability. Her characters and stories come alive off the page, making me want to join in on their celebrations and mourn their losses (which would explain the tears). She is a master of her genre.
I received a copy of this book from Kensington through NetGalley.
I loved the banter between the characters and their personal growth throughout the story. I love the way that a book named after romantic comedies is more than *just* a romantic comedy, which is why Katherine Center books are always must-reads for me. This book was good, but not as good as "Hello Stranger" or some of Center's other books. The ending with the script really bothered me...how did Charlie end up reworking it, and was Emma really okay with this? ...and the convenience of the meet-up at the awards show at the end was a challenge. How was this a surprise to him when he knew she was in town? I'm okay with suspending some disbelief in many romcom scenarios, but these details nagged at me as I was processing the story and it interfered with the satisfaction of the resolution.
I wonder about the title...it seems to invite comparisons to 'Romantic Comedy' by Curtis Sittenfeld that don't necessarily benefit 'The Rom-Commers'. I love this book for what it is: a funny, entertaining story with likable characters who tug at your heartstrings. It is consumable and entertaining, but it doesn't have the same impact of some of Center's other books. I would still completely recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the genre!
I really enjoyed this book, it was a fabulous rom-com. This is the first Katherine Center book I have read. It was entertaining and discussed some really good topics (grief/anxiety), I enjoyed the characters- but felt the end was rushed. I did not like the timeline of when she thought he was sick to the awards show. I also felt like having the public love declaration was out of character for the two. (Also is a pom a bun hairstyle, that verbiage was difficult for me). I also had a hard time picturing the Emma and would like more building of her character than hair and strawberry shirt. Additionally, I liked the dialogue surrounding defending rom-com which I love. Thank you for this ARC! I am more than happy to recommend this to anyone who enjoys closed door romance (not usually my cup of tea).
I think I have read all of Katherine Center's book in one or two days and this book was no exception. She has a way of writing real characters who are so fun and loveable. I appreciated the care she took in telling you up front the emotional parts up front instead of making you anxiously wait. I had such a great time reading this, looking forward to all future book by this author.
