Thank you so much to Netgalley and the publishers for approving me to read this book!
I absolutely devoured this book!! So so so good!! I highly recommend. I love everything K Center
Emma has a complicated life, bound to her family and dreams of being a screenwriter. Literally, the dream job has dropped in her lap. Her writing hero Charlie Yates needs a re-write on a rom-com. But he's so eccentric!!!
Many thanks to Net Galley and St. Martin's Press for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I adored this book! This was my first Katherine Center - how, I have no idea. If her other books are anything like Rom-commers then I will be reading all of her backlist. This was a heartwarming, enemies to friends to lovers tale of a legendary Hollywood screenwriter and his biggest fan, a budding talent who has been held back by family duty. After her families life is upended by an accident, Emma is obligated (by choice) to help raise her younger sister and care for her ailing father. 10 years has passed, and while she has passively dabbled in her passion of writing Romcoms, her ex-boyfriend turned Hollywood manager provides her with the chance of a lifetime. Re-write/co-write a Rom-com with her Idol. Of course, he has had his own challenges in the past 5 years, and has no desire to write a rom-com, let alone re-write it with a nobody.
The friendship between these two characters is heartwarming and laugh out loud funny. Both characters are grossly flawed and fully 100% redeemable. I was routing for them the whole time.
If you have not read anything by Katherine Center, I implore you to pick this one up. A perfectly bingeable summer read. Thank you St. Martin's Press for a galley of this book. I look forward to her next one as well.
The book begins as an enemy-to-lovers book. Emma has always wanted to be a screenwriter but instead is taking care of her father. Now she is given the chance to work with her favorite screen writer but it does not begin as she had hoped. After Emma’s sister comes home and takes over the care of their father she is given the chance to work with Charlie Yates who she likes, but he does not know she is coming or that she is there to help fix the horrible screenplay. He just did it because he wants to get a movie of his made. Once you get into the story you find out what Charle’s problem is and it's centered around love. The rest of the book is a back-and-forth of fun and sometimes talking about each other's past to help with moving on with the book and the future. I found this to be a good read.
It's rare I DNF a book, but this unfortunately was one of those cases. This book just was not for me, and it's all because of the male character. He just was not likeable. He was offensive and condescending, and I just couldn't get over that. But Katherine Center is such a good author, I suggest you please read the book and decide for your self.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
I loved this book! Just devoured it. I couldn’t put it down it was so good.
If you love a good rom-com you need to pick this one up. It was easy to read and I read it faster than I anticipated.
“Two screen writers who write a script together, fall wildly in love.”…But there’s so much more to it.
I’ve only read one other book by Katherine and I can’t wait to read all her others!
Go get yourself this book right now, or be sure to add it to your TBR!!
Thank you NetGalley and St Martin’s Press for a DRC. The Rom-Commers is available now.
If you love good banter this one is definitely for you! I always enjoy a good chuckle when I read any book and when it comes from back and forth banter between two potential love interests….all the better. Katherine Center never disappoints with her words and writing romance ABOUT romance seems to be her specialty! If you are looking for a super spicy rom com this is not that, but a fun and unique love story it definitely is.
Emma Wheeler, an aspiring screenwriter, moves to L.A. for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with her idol, Charlie Yates, who despises romantic comedies and collaboration, forcing her to fight for her dreams and the value of love stories while navigating an unexpected romance.

Katherine Center books are always so cute and fun to read and this one was no different. I always know I'm going to have a good time reading her books.
This was my first Katherine Center book but it will certainly not be my last. The Rom-Commers is the story of Emma and Charlie. Emma is an aspiring Nora Ephron and Charlie is a famous screenwriter himself. When Emma gets the chance to work with Charlie, she jumps at the chance, leaving her home for LA. Quickly Emma realizes there might be a reason why they say never to meet your heroes.
Fun, sweet, and light-hearted, The Rom-Commers is a perfect read for rom-com lovers everywhere.
I have always enjoyed Katherine Center's books. It is not just about romance but more about people getting to know each other and people growing. She also always brings in teaching/learning due to different health conditions in her books.
I liked Charlie and Nora. They both had a lot of hard personal things happen in their lives. Nora is sunshine despite all that has happened and having to give up her dreams to take care of her father. Charlie is the kind of grump who has been beaten down, which is why he is as grumpy as he is. They fit each other so well. I love that they both realized that they deserved to be happy.
My biggest issue with the book was at the end with Nora's sister. I feel like the blame was too heavy and that Nora should have been more apologetic when she discovered what really happened.
Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press and Katherine Center for the e-ARC of this book. This review is my own opinion.
At this point, Katherine Center's books are an instant yes for me and this one is the same. What starts as what could be kind of a soapy premise is filled with heart and grace. Center's books allow people to operate outside the tropes they might otherwise inhabit.
Hmmmm. I will say I loved The Bodyguard by Center. It was such a delight to read.
I think that Emma had two very contrasting personality traits that didn’t quite add up for me.
We see her as this super serious caretaker for her father but once she is removed from that role, I felt that she became very naive and immature which didnt make sense for me.
Personally, I have a hard time reading stories of characters in their 30s being immature.
I enjoyed the love story between Emma and Charlie and I think Center did a wonderful job when writing about the heartbreak Emma went through with the loss of her Mother.
I feel like some writers make the male so sensitive and caring and the women tend to be a bit more aloof. I think that was part of also why I didnt feel as engaged with this particular book.
Perfect fun read for the summer! Thoroughly enjoyed the characters and story. I can’t wait to tell my friends about this book.
The Rom-Commers was one of my most anticipated books of the year. After falling in love with The Bodyguard, a few years ago, I took a deep dive into all of Katherine Center’s books and have never once been disappointed. She has a way of creating a world of hope and love amidst hardship and the Rom-Commers fits perfectly with her other works.
Emma Wheeler and Charlie Yates have led very different lives. While both love screen writing, Charlie is wildly successful and Emma had family difficulties that forced her to put her career on the back burner. Despite Emma’s circumstances, she has never stopped believing in the power of an amazingly written love story, which Charlie prefers to focus on the darkness of the world. Their worlds collide after a series of events forces them both out of their comfort zones.
Charlie and Emma are both brilliantly written. Their backstories bring them to life both individually and together. Each of them maintain their own personalities that are the culmination of each of their experiences, but when they are together, they bring to light eachother’s strengths in a way that lights up the pages. The heavy topics that are threaded throughout the story are treated with respect by both author and characters.
It was great fun to watch all the tropes that book lovers follow so closely come to life in characters who are writers themselves. Seeing these tropes through the eyes of screenwriters was a fun way to understand why readers love different tropes so much. There are so many tropes in this book and I would love to go through all of them, but that would ruin the experience.
5/5 stars for a book that was so much fun to read from start to finish.
Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read this eARC in exchange for my honest review.
I'm very sad to say that I didn't enjoy this book as much as Center's other books. I never felt much chemistry between Emma and Charlie. I felt like I was being told they had feelings for each other but I never actually believed it. The lack of honest communication was incredibly frustrating.
I also had a huge issue with the argument Emma and her sister have near the end, wherein her sister apologizes very sincerely and sweetly and is graciously forgiven by Emma and then EMMA NEVER APOLOGIZES BACK. And the thing she said was equally as hurtful and terrible. That drove me crazy and made me dislike Emma. It felt like she was a self-pitying martyr who was owed something and I did not care for it.
And I'll just briefly mention the fact that the author referred to cellos as having frets. PSA: Cellos do not, in fact, have frets. This bothered me almost as much as Emma not apologizing, but I know it won't bother most people. 😂 I sincerely hope it gets caught and fixed between ARCs and final copies, but I won't be surprised if it doesn't.
What DID I like? Emma's relationship with her sister (up until that argument near the end) and her dad. Emma trying to help Charlie grow up and move on from his past. The fun things Center includes that make me laugh - she's great at humor. Emma's dad's wisdom and outlook on life.
I'm certain this was a case of "just not for me" as this book is getting great reviews from other people and I've loved Center's other books! I'll definitely still read her next one.
You know when you meet someone new and you have that feeling where you just click and know you're going to be friends? I had a similar feeling to that when reading this book. It vibrated with personality and was just an absolute joy to read. I loved the main character from the beginning and related so much to her taking on the responsibilities of the world and feeling like she had to do everything perfectly. When she gets the opportunity of a lifetime and ends up leaving her father in her sister's care she clashes with her sister's approach, which is much more carefree--and joy-filled. The whole book is an adventure in learning to live again -- the male MC's cancer is in remission and he hasn't written in years. Now, he has to learn to write again --and with someone for the first time--and in a genre he doesn't even like (romance). The banter between the two main characters is spectacular. The book is filled with laugh-out-loud moments and moments of intense emotions. If you love romance, banter, stories about personal growth, grumpy x sunshine, or learning to find joy again, you'll absolutely love this book. I can't recommend it enough!
The Rom-Commers is a closed door romance between two writers rewriting a screenplay. It does have some trigger warnings so check for those, there are very heavy topics covered so this isnt as light as the cover makes it seem. But I really enjoyed it, I looked forward to reading more each day. I liked the characters even though I wish they would talk to each other a little bit more. And the ending was very rom-com.
I really enjoy Katherine Center's books and typically find them to be 4-5 star reads. This one didn't hit quite the same for me, perhaps being my least favorite that I've read so more of a 3.5 star. Don't get me wrong it was a nice read, but just felt a little too perfect or something. I really love her stories because they are typically a little 'messy' and have a nice ending. I'm not sure if it was the characters or the plot but it was maybe a little too cheesy for me personally. I like that her stories always have some sort of hardship, they make them more relatable and I enjoy seeing the growth in the characters. I don't feel I really have a favorite character, maybe her Dad? I like that he made his life the best he could and tried to live life to the fullest despite his accident.
Emma Wheeler has long dreamed of being rom-com screenwriter, but her dreams were sidelined when she became a caretaker for her dad after an accident. When her friend and agent offers her a once-in-a-lifetime chance to help superstar screenwriter Charlie Yates rewrite his rom-com, Emma’s sister takes over caretaking duties and pushes her to go. Charlie has no use for her help, but when she rips his screenplay to shreds, he admits that Emma might know what she’s doing. For the next six weeks, Emma teaches Charlie about the art of the rom-com, but it turns out the “rom” may not just be in the pages of their screenplay.
Readers who are fans of rom-coms will love Emma’s passion for the genre and all the ways she convinces Charlie of their value. Katherine Center always builds great tension and creates characters you want to see happy (and together). While The Bodyguard still probably holds my top spot of Center’s books (those characters make a few cameos here), I loved the premise of this and flew through it.
I wanted to like this book a lot more than I did, and while it was still above average by far, it just fell a little flat for my expectations. I’ve absolutely loved Center’s last few books and this just wasn’t quite as good (read:still great). The premise was really cute but I just felt Emma too two dimensional for too long. Overall 3.5/5 because I think the third act wrapped up well, albeit predictable to a degree
