A new favorite! I cried. I’m calling it—for me, this is THE romantic comedy of 2024!
TROPES
- Grumpy/sunshine
- Romantic vs. Love Cynic
- Co-workers
- Hollywood
- Forced proximity: housemates
Emma, the heroine, is the best part of the book! She’s salt of the earth nice without being quirky or perfect. I was immediately attached to her over how much she loves her family and willingly sacrifices for them. Charlie is a top Hollywood screenwriter but also grumpy, lonely, wounded guy. He’s a little bit of a tough nut to crack but it was fun seeing how Emma draws him out of his shell and gets his moments of vulnerability.
There's plenty of mutual attraction, but it’s not a steamy book. Zero spice. It’s a lovely emotional slow-burn too. I liked that Katherine Center added small details in that allow us readers to really get to know the characters; it also feels like we get to see the main couple truly get to know each other. Emma and Charlie felt like real people. I also appreciated that we actually got details about their writing together instead of the author glossing over it (like I’ve seen in other similar books). Emma and Charlie build common ground before the relationship takes off and have some REAL conversations.
The Rom-Commers is sweet and heartfelt. It goes into the emotional depths with characters, like career roadblocks, caretaking of a loved one, grief over a tragic loss, divorce, etc. It’s also incredibly light and joyful. When Emma and Charlie are living in the same house while they work on a script, they get into funny situations. The “research” Emma and Charlie do to make the script they’re writing feel authentically romantic is EVERYTHING! I definitely got the swoony feelings.
Please give it a read if you'e a fan of rom-coms and/or Mariana Zapata. (I recently read All Rhodes Lead Here and feel like these two books are somewhat similar in tone and tropes.) As long as you're not looking for sexy romance, this is a top tier romance I'd recommend to anyone and everyone!
When I’m in the mood for a rom-com, there are few authors that can do the trick like Katherine Center. It’s so clear she loves the genre and finds so much value in it, she continually shows her readers the appreciation she has for their love of a fun romance that isn’t without depth. She understands the assignment.
The Rom-Commers gives us Emma and Charlie, two screenwriters with very different career paths, trying to fix Charlie’s very terrible movie, about a love he doesn’t believe in.
It took me til about 80% to bump this up from a 3. That’s when the book really started to shine for me. Center brought in some of those deeper themes that I love to find in her books and really wrapped up things in a lovely way. Emma’s dad also wins for one of the best fictional dads ever. He is an absolute gem.
The summer release for this one is excellent, it will make for the perfect beach and pool read for an enjoyable romance with some heart.
I will say I was disappointed to see some stronger language and more sexual content/innuendo (but still closed door) in this one than I remember in her previous work.
Thank you to St Martins Press and NetGalley for an electronic version of The Rom-Commers.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I'll start by saying that Katherine Center's last two books are two of my favorites. This one, however, was just OK. It was entertaining, but lacked the magic of her last two works and seemed like it was done in a rush. Regardless, Center is an outstanding author and I look forward to reading her next work.
What a cute book! 😍 💕
I really enjoyed Katherine Center's newest, The Rom-Commers. I was nervous to read it because I absolutely LOVED The Bodyguard by her and had high expectations. I was not let down! This one is sweet, silly, fun and also emotional. {Trigger warning for anyone who lost a parent or who has a sick parent.} I smiled a lot while reading and I definitely needed that.

Katherine Center has delivered another perfect book and I dropped everything to read it! The Rom-Commers is a romantic comedy that follows Emma Wheeler, a dedicated but struggling screenwriter, as she navigates the opportunity of a lifetime working with her idol, the renowned screenwriter Charlie Yates. Filled with humor, heartwarming moments, and unexpected twists, the book explores the magic of love stories, romantic comedies, Hollywood, and the unpredictable nature of real-life romance. This is a must-read addition to the rom com book genre.
This book caught my attention from the very first page, and I couldn’t put it down. The story took me on an emotional rollercoaster, from moments of pure joy to genuine tears, a testament to how deeply invested I became in the lives of Emma and Charlie. The Rom Commers is a love letter to rom coms and as a rom com lover I am here for it! If you're a fan of genuine, heartwarming romantic comedies, this is a must-add to your 2024 reading list. Huge thanks to Katherine Center for this delightful journey, and I can't wait to see if they turn this into a rom-com movie one day!

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Another Katherine Center book that really knows how to hit you with all the feels! I read The Rom-Commers in a day - it was just totally un-put-downable!
The concept of two authors teaming up (one a bubbly romance author and the other a jades curmudgeon) was such a perfect meta plot for a romance book. And the evolution of their relationship and chemistry is exactly the kind of slow burn that keeps you turning pages to get to the 🔥
Will be recommending this one to EVERYONE.
OK, where has Katherine Center been all my life? I originally requested this book because it was read now, and all my book club buddies rave about Katherine Center. I've not read anything by her before, but you can bet I'll be catching up with all her books.
I laughed until I cried. I love humor in a book, This book is full of 'bazinga's'. and the story is just fun. I'm not really, or I wasn't a fan of rom-coms, but I am now! Read this book in a day!
Grumpy met Sunshine are the perfect couple
I loved this book. I can't stress enough how much fun it was reading this book. Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me this opportunity. As publication date draws closer, I will port review on goodreads, instagram and facebook.
“This is ridiculous,” Sylvie said at last. “Just go ask him.”“Ask him?!” I gasped in horror. “I will never ask him!”“You don’t want to know?”“I desperately want to know,” I said. “But I will just privately obsess over it, like a normal person.”
Stop, drop, and preorder this book right now. Quirky, fun, romantic, emotional, thoughtful, hopeful, and absolutely full of character growth. I love Katherine Center and her books. And this one is no exception!
Thank you so much to SMP Romance for my complimentary e-arc of this book. All thoughts are my own.
*Previous death of a parent, cancer, previous major injuries with lasting effects,
*Some strong language, one closed door scene sort of
3.5⭐
I needed a palette cleanser after several heavy books, and Katherine Center never disappoints. This isn't my favorite of hers, but I still enjoyed it. The beginning was strong, and I'm obviously a huge fan of writers and reading about writing. However, the ending got a little messy with some major whiplash.
What I Loved: Writers being writers. Emma's dad. The dialogue - especially Emma's - was on point. Even her inner dialogue was funny and relatable.
What Could Have Been Better: Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I wasn't a huge fan of Charlie. Guy had some major red flags that Emma just zoomed right past. As a writer, he understood the importance of words and still wasn't careful with his toward her. Also, too much messy drunkenness at the end. Also, also, I'm all for cheese and happy endings, but this ending - especially that final monologue - was just too unbelievable even for the genre.
Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martins Press for my e-ARC.
I absolutely adore Katherine Center’s books and The Rom-Commers did not disappoint.
The story follows Emma, a want to be screen writer, who gave up her dream to take care of her ill father. When a once in a lifetime job comes her way, Emma jets off to LA to help her screenwriter and celebrity crush, Charlie Yates, rewrite his first rom-com.
The Rom-Commers was everything you could want in a Katherine Center rom-com. Lovable characters, real life issues, and a swoon worthy romance.
The normal person/celebrity trope is one of my absolute favorites. I love Katherine Center’s writing style and couldn’t wipe a big cheesy grin off my face while reading. This book read quick with a voice so strong it immediately sucked me in!Everyone is going to be talking about The Rom-Commers this summer!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
Katherine Center’s writing is an absolute ray of sunshine that warms you completely from the inside out, a deep breath outdoors when there is rain on the horizon, a perfect bite of a perfectly baked chocolate cake. The Rom-Commers is written in a way that takes you on an emotional rollercoaster. You feel happy, and silly, and sad, and embarrassed, and mad and EVERYTHING in between. But mostly it made me feel hopeful, it made me feel good. I loved every moment of reading this book, I couldn’t put it down.

Emma & Charlie are just so wonderful together. Emma pulling Charlie out of darkness and back into happiness where he could see and experience love and joy, first through her eyes then for real within himself. Their easy way of being together, complimenting each other, getting a rise out of each other and challenging each other is genuinely addictive. It makes you feel like falling in love.

Thank you @netgalley & @stmartinspress for the ARC of this book! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
My favorite book by Katherine Center ever. Emma longs to be a writer but is committed to caring for her father 24/7 until she has the opportunity to shine up a rom com by a very famous, very handsome screenwriter. Unfortunately, he doesn't know she was tapped for the job and is unhappy when she shows up.
Is there anything better than a rom-com about two writers writing a rom-com?
Emma Wheeler is a writer at heart but has spent the last decade of her life taking care of her sick father and younger sister. So her life goals got put on hold…until now. Her oldest friend found a gig for her to help famous screenwriter Charlie Yates fix up the terrible rom-com screenplay he wrote. But things aren’t always straightforward as they each have their own baggage and some adjustments to make along the way.
Katherine Center does it again with a thoughtful story with impeccable character development. These damaged yet strong characters are portrayed in a way that will make you laugh and cry but promises to make you satisfied in the end with a true HEA ending which as Emma tells Charlie…is the definition of a rom com!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for sharing this ARC with me in exchange for my honest review.
Oh, how I wish I could give 10 stars! I am smitten with this book. I can’t wait until it is available to buy, I will be telling everyone to read it. The characters were just perfect, and the storyline was great. I smiled through almost all of this book. The parts I didn’t smile for, you will understand as you read. Once again, Katherine Center has hit a home run and this book is wonderful. Thank you to Netgalley for the early read, I am truly thankful.
I loved this book with my whole heart. I devoured it. I don’t typically gravitate to grumpy sunshine but I found Charlie to be so adorable & as soon as he started letting his walls down, my face started hurting from smiling at these pages. There is so much to love with this one- Emma’s family, the back story of each of the MCs, the banter, the ending.
So grateful I got to read this early. Thank you NG!
I love Katherine Center’s passion for the romance genre! This is my third book by this wonderful author and while I didn’t enjoy it as much as The Bodyguard, I did like it more than Hello Stranger! The plot was sweet but what always stands out for me with Center’s books is the fact that she’s going to unapologetically write romance novels for her readers while avoiding the haters.
Romance often gets dismissed as a silly little genre but Center’s work goes to show it’s serious business and there is nothing wrong with wanting to read these love stories.
To quote our main character, Emma “Love stories had lifted me up, delighted me, and educated me on the power of human kindness for years.”
Bravo, Katherine Center! Us romance lovers appreciate you and your books so much!
This book was wonderful! I read it all in one go. I love the plot and the main characters. They were just perfect for each other!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this arc in exchange for an honest review!
This book was really wonderful….I fell in love with the characters. I couldn’t put this book down. This was my first time reading a book by Katherine Center but it certainly will not be my last. She had me tearful, giggling, and on the edge of my seat at times. I loved this part “whatever story you tell yourself about your life, that’s the one that’ll be true”. It makes you think! Definitely read this as soon as you can because you will not be disappointed! Thanks NetGalley and St. Matins Press for the advanced read I truly enjoyed it!!

Thank you to NetGalley and St Martin's Press for the ARC! Another amazing read by Katherine Center! Love all of her books. Loved all the characters. So easy to find yourself wrapped up in the story and rooting for the two main characters and falling in love with the story. Highly recommend!
I can’t tell you how excited I was to get this arc, I devoured this book! I absolutely love Katherine Centers books they just make you feel so bubbly and happy!
When I was reading I looked down at the percentage and I was at 60% it just flew by playing like a movie in my head. I had to slow myself down so I can enjoy it because it doesn’t come out until July 2024
I laughed I giggled and I had anxiety just like Emma. The way anxiety is represented is really good and real.
Emma is a aspiring writer and she gets a part to help re-write a script with her favorite writer Charlie Yates! I loved that Jack Stapleton made an appearance!!! You’ve read about him I’m the Bodyguard another one of Katherine’s 5 star books!
It’s fun and a feel good book I highly recommend.
