This missed the mark for me and it absolutely pains me to say it. I LOVE Katherine Center! She is an auto buy author for me! So not liking this book was so disappointing for me. Especially when just about EVERYONE has been ranting and raving nonstop about it since it came out. I finished this before pub day and it’s taken me this long to figure out the words to say to describe my disappointment. I did not like the characters. Neither Emma nor Charlie. ESPECIALLY Charlie Yates! Definitely one of the worst MMC’s I’ve ever read. Ugh I couldn’t stand him! He was such a D*#k! Emma? If she was a good character then that would have made up a little bit from what this book lost from Charlie, but she was horrible too. I would have thrown hands if my sister talked to me like she did! Damn sure not apologize to her! Like wtf!? I really don’t have much else to say. I will definitely but Center’s next book but I did not buy this one. Even with the pink sprayed edges, it was a hard no.
I received an advanced reader’s copy of this book from NetGalley. This review is honest, unbiased and completely my own.
Emma wants to be a successful screenwriter, she dabbles here and there with writing contests and rom-coms. She also has put that dream on the back burner, thanks to being the sole caretaker for her father. Allowing her sister to attend college and pursue her dreams. Until, one day her agent calls and tells her that her favorite screenwriter has stepped out of his usual genre and written a rom-com that needs a rewrite (and she was the first choice to assist), she has to consider if she wants to finally try to make her dreams come true. Well, things aren't always as they seem, and they say you shouldn't meet your heroes for a reason. It's a story about love, learning and personal growth. I really enjoyed it.
Charlie a screenwriter who is forced to write a rom-com before his next thriller can be made. Emma is an aspiring screenwriter, who is brought it to help Charlie fix his screenplay. And as one can imagine, he is not happy about this.
I enjoyed this story but there were times I didn’t like how Charlie treated Emma. Their relationship starts off rough but as they work together and get to know each other better, the sparks start to fly. There are some heavier topics in this story. Emma is the primary caregiver to her dad and her family is grieving the loss of her mother. Read this if you enjoy:
🩷 Enemies to Lovers
🩷 Grumpy x Sunshine
🩷 Forced Proximity
🩷 Closed Door Romance
DNF at 23%. Usually I love Katherine Center’s books, but oof I couldn’t do this one.
I didn’t like the FMC’s martyr mindset with her family and then her being a big fangirl of the MMC made me uncomfortable before they even met. Then they meet and the MMC was rude and unlikeable even though the FMC continues to fangirl.
I was officially done with the book when the FMC was explaining to the MMC what makes a great rom-com - I had realized by that point I didn’t find the book romantic or comedic yet, and I knew I wouldn’t care about the development of these two character’s ‘romance’.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC!
Katherine Center is an automatic yes for me. I will always add her books to my tbr.
This book showed what its like putting other people before your own dreams. In this occasion she is actually the sole taker for her dad who needs full time care, her dreams had to be put on hold for a while. Which a lot can relate I know I do. Through out the book she gets the chance to re=write a script for a. famous screen writer Charlie Yates (the screenwriter that she has always obsessed over).
Charlie Yates has no idea how to write rom-coms (atleast good ones) which is why Emma is need in this situaition. Through out the process they fall in love with one another which its kind of hard to rap my head around becayse Charlie Yates is so mean and never really apoligized . The beginning of the book was really good just felt the end fell alittle apart in my opnion. The thing that brought the book together at the end what the Authors note. I did loved that.
This was so wholesome i cry 😭 no seriously i cried
5⭐️- after the let down of Hello Strangers (for me), I wasn't sure how this one was going to be... but THE ROM-COMMERS was a HIT! If you've read a KC book, you know she writes such unique characters with HEART, GRIT, COMPASSION - and sometimes you also have to suspend belief a bit to really immerse yourself in the story.
From the get-go, I knew I was going to like Emma and Charlie, and boy did I enjoy their banter and their evolving relationship. They are 2 opposites, yet so similar in so many ways. They help each other through some tough shit, and even laugh a time or two. I really enjoyed the side characters and I was kicking my feet with glee so many times.
Highly reco!
The ROM Commers was my first Katherine Center book and I really enjoyed it! It made me giggle out loud. I read it in a day and a half and will be reading more from Katherine.
Katherine Center delivers again with a phenomenal story and strong case for the romance genre. Her depiction of family as loving but far from perfect is done well here, reminiscent of some of her other works. I think as a caregiver getting to read a MC who is also in that role was meaningful and Center did a good job at capturing the complicated dynamics of the experience in a family and on an individual.
I really liked this book. Much better than the bodyguard book. This book made me want to pick this author up again. The banter/romance was perfect!
Katherine Center is a balm to the soul! Her ability to write humor in a connections where they might butt heads but they are true for each other is so wonderful.
spectacular give me 14 of this. I LOVEEEE. the story did the title (and ofc the genre) justice. it was amusing since the very beginning, even though not all was fun and games.
Emma is an aspiring screenwriter, but no matter how desperate she want that career, she has to take care of her disabled father full time. she doesn't mind, she loves her father. until an opportunity came just when her sister has finished med school. and it's not just any opportunity: it involves Charlie Yates, her ultimate screenwriter idol.
i'm gonna stop the snippet right there because everything after that was starting to get funny you have to read it yourself. in short, I love Emma. I love Charlie. I love their banter and dynamics (they're both SO hilariously gullible it's adorable). Logan was also an interesting side character. and then there's also cameos from Jake Stapleton, THE Jake Stapleton from The Bodyguard!!
the family dynamics were also playing a very important role here, it's so good. the conflict was tense, the conclusion was lovely. Katherine Center hits, yet again!
Thank you to NetGalley, Katherine Center and St Martin’s Press for the free ebook in exchange for an honest review.
This was so what I need to get over my reading slump. It is so adorable and I forgot how much I enjoyed Center’s writing! She really makes me feel all the feels and I adored the premise of this.
Katherine Center delivers with a romantic comedy that made me laugh and cry. Emma Wheeler is a young screenplay writer who gets the opportunity of a lifetime - writing with her all time favorite and super successful screenplay writer, Charlie Yates. The problem is - well at least one of the problems - that Charlie is an action writer who has written a romantic comedy, and it’s terrible. Emma is sent to help him rewrite his rom-com, but she has no idea how easy it will be to fall for the slightly nerdy but naturally handsome Charlie. I loved the depth of this story that was lightened by moments of pure goofiness. This book was adorable and I loved every minute.
Katherine Center does it again with one of my favorite books of the year. The Rom-Commers will make you laugh, cry, and experience every other emotion in between. I've said it before that no one writes banter like Katherine Center. The character and relationship development was so well done. I loved this book!
Excellent! My favorite Katherine Center yet. I loved the plot and the characters. Kinda felt like half the story of the popular movie The Holiday. (Kate Winslets storyline). I was invested from the start on this one and flew through it. Highly recommend.
Katherine Center is such an amazing and wonderful author! Seriously, anything she writes is going to be perfection. I have absolutely loved everything I have read from her previously. This book was obviously no exception. The way she writes the characters and storyline draws you in and hooks you. You are fully immersed in the story before you even realize it. I was constantly left wanting more from each chapter and hoping the book never ended yet desperately wanting to know the outcome. Emma and Charlie are true opposites and the perfect grumpy X sunshine. This is a book I will definitely want to reread, and I look forward to listening to the audiobook as well.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the arc to review. All opinions are my own.
I enjoyed this one. I am having a hard time reviewing only because I just felt like there was so much trauma/bad things happening to one group of people, ha! I did like the characters and the story.
Many thanks to my friends at @stmartinspress and @macmillan.audio for the #gifted copies of this book.
Oh Katherine! You know the way to my heart.
I finished this book mere hours ago, and I AM SO IN LOVE with everything about it.
From the beginning, I found myself totally invested. I laughed so hard my stomach hurt. And then, I found myself swooning in equal measure.
This storyline was easy to fall for, and I found myself completely infatuated and basking in its goodness. The characters. The storyline. The sweetness of the romance. The juxtaposition of the hard things and the joy. It was total perfection.
But the true magic in this book: the way Center brazenly defended the rom-com genre. Center’s fierce dedication and love for romance came through loud and clear in Emma’s voice as she went toe to toe with Charlie on the screenplay they teamed up to write. If I had not already been a wholehearted devotee of the genre- or Center’s books- Emma would’ve convinced me.
And the cameo from The Bodyguard... BE STILL MY HEART!
Center’s books are always a ray of sunshine for me, and The Rom-Commers had me smiling from ear to ear with utter satisfaction. Another winner!
🎧 Patti Murin’s narration for Center’s books is always “chef’s kiss,” and this one is no exception. Also, hearing Center read the author’s note added a specialness to the read. But the real reason you’re going to want to grab the audio: that extra chapter told from Charlie’s POV. 👌🏻
If you’re a fan of romantic comedies, this book is a delightful treat! It features charming characters with relatable quirks and witty banter that keeps the mood light and fun. The storyline follows the classic “will they, won’t they” trope, filled with hilarious misunderstandings and heartwarming moments. The chemistry between the protagonists is electric, making their journey toward love both entertaining and satisfying. With a perfect blend of humor, romance, and a touch of drama, this book is sure to leave you with a smile. It’s an ideal pick for anyone looking to escape into a feel-good love story!
This was such a cute book! Katherine Center is the queen of feel-good romance. Also love books about writers. Thank you for the chance to read early!
