Every summer the Foxes take their two children,Thea and Rem, to stay for a couple weeks with Grammie who lives in rural Appalachian Virginia. There can run around the farm and have fresh air. They look forward to Grammie's fresh bread and the scent of her homemade candles. Now that Thea is twelve she can help even more.
This idyllic time is cut very short. Grammie and Thea both have a horrific nightmare that Thea's parents are brutally murdered in their home. Thea and her Grammie both have a special sight even though they've not discussed it before. Thea is able to see through the killer's eyes exactly what happened to her beloved parents.
Thea is able to help las enforcement nab the serial killer and he will spend the rest of his life in prison, The scary thing is Thea finds out that the killer has a certain amount of special sight, too.
The children live and grow up in Redbud Hollow with Grammie. Thea and Rem are able to make a life for themselves. Thea is still haunted by her parents' killer. Her gift is often a curse as she tries to find love and lead a normal life.
Nora Roberts is the ultimate storyteller. In Mind Games she weaves in suspense, family and love to make a truly engaging story. The paranormal element seems authentic even it may not exist is our own lives. The setting comes alive with vivid descriptions. I could almost smell the fresh bread and candles.
Grammie Lucy has held up to tragedy and is a strong loving woman. Her grandchildren always come first. Thea has to deal with loss, growing up and dealing with her gift which often seems like a curse. Rem has to deal with many issues, too, but the author shows him as resilient and smart.
Yes, the killer is pure evil. It is unfortunately believable that someone like him exists. You only have to watch the news to see his kind live among us.
I promise you will be pulled into this novel from the very beginning. It's a little longer than some, but so engaging that the pages fly by. I have read many novels by Nora Roberts, but will never catch up with her prolific writing. I will try to stay caught up with her newer works and try as many as possible from her backlist.
If you like romantic suspense you will definitely want to add this book to your TBR. Nora Robert’s writes such compelling characters and pairs them with a plot that keeps you on your toes. And Mind Games did not disappoint!
"Mind Games" by Nora Roberts is a thrilling romantic suspense novel that will keep you guessing until the very end. The story follows a group of psychic investigators who use their unique abilities to solve crimes and catch criminals. The characters are well-developed and the plot is fast-paced, making it a captivating read. With a perfect blend of romance, suspense, and paranormal elements, "Mind Games" is a page-turner that will leave you wanting more. Overall, it is a highly recommended read for fans of Nora Roberts and the romantic suspense genre.
I loved this book! I have to say I love everything by this author though. If you you love romantic suspense then this book is for you! I definitely recommend it to anyone who loves this author! It didn’t disappoint!
I really enjoyed it. It was sad and exciting, everything I love about Nora Roberts books. It does include both childhood and adulthood story that could almost be two books in one. But it set up the story so well that I had a hard time putting it down.
5 stars
This is going to be a fairly short review. If you love, or even like, Nora Roberts, you’ll love/like this one. It very much follows Nora’s formula for storytelling which works for me.
Thea Fox has psychic abilities that allowed her to “witness” her parents murder when she was 12 years old. She was able to identify their killer. But he, too, is a psychic and this connection will haunt them both for years to come.
Ty Brennan is a former boy band singer. He’s now Thea’s neighbor having inherited his grandmother’s house which is next door to Thea’s. He and his little boy quickly become part of Thea’s close knit family.
And oh yeah, Thea designs video games.
I just enjoyed the heck out of this book! Again, it follows Nora’s formula. However this one is very slow to get to the romance-Ty doesn’t even show up until about halfway through, then takes his time to make a move on Thea. But it’s worth the wait!
Thank you to #netgalley and #stmartinspress for the advanced copy of #mindgames . This book published May 21, 2024 and is available where books are sold.
I didn't know that what I needed was a small town romance combined with a psychological thriller, but apparently Nora Roberts knew. I was so late to becoming a Nora Roberts reader, and that's officially one of my regrets in life. I've only read a handful of her books, and they've all been fantastic. Mind Games was no exception.
I loved this phenomenal story about loss, resilience, and strong women with a hint of magic in it. Thea is a wonderful protagonist, and the conflict with Rigs was one of the most interesting plots I've ever read. I highly recommend this one!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.
WOW, this book... Gut wrenching beginning and a wonderful story of love for family, being true to yourself and finding your people in life.
I was unsure what this story would bring but the description was very tempting. I am glad I gave it a go, the story was different and unique. The characters were developed. There were some true twists along the way and did not really start out in what I thought would end in a happily ever after, but it did. This story takes you on a journey from the eyes of a young girl who sees her parents in a tragic ending, going to live with her grandma, dealing with true and real family issues on the events after death. Growing up and understanding she has a gift, what that means to her, her grandma, her brother and the police. Becoming an adult, falling in love, being vulnerable, staying true to who you. I would recommend and loved this book. So much so, I did listen to this in audio as well when working on a house project. I loved it even more the second time. The audio was done extremely well.
2.5 stars. This was a little underwhelming for me. I did enjoy the writing, but couldn’t get on board with the whole mind to mind thing. I liked Thea and Ty a lot, but they could have had a bit more chemistry.
Isn’t life a mind game? Give and take, ups and downs, doubts and beliefs, tides and rifts. With a twist of fate and destiny taking your hand, what we do with the given is entirely up to us.
A happy and content family, the Foxes lead a successful life with their children and like every year, their annual trip to visit Grammie Lucy is the highlight of their lives. But this year, fate has other plans for this happy family, gripping them in a turmoil of “Mind Games” that forever will change their lives.
I don’t even know where to start with a review, because this is one of those stories that is a compulsory read, to journey with Thea and her brother Rem, as they learn to navigate a life without their parents, for Thea to come to terms with her vision, and build a future for themselves along with their Grammie.
The entire time I was reading the story, I was waiting for the other shoe to fall. I forget for a second that this is Nora Robert’s plot and never does she give us the ordinary, and there’s a reason she’s a topnotch writer! The characters are created with extreme care and thought, their characters developed with great thought as they age through life, and the ancillary characters were well placed with care. The antagonist of the story is a masterful creation and giving him the vision made him a worthy adversary when the time comes for Thea to put an end to his mind games.
To understand the relationship of the Foxes, Grammie Lucy and the aftermath of the tragedy, the consequences of having a special gift, and the courage to accept and live a full life, “Mind Games” will give the readers an insight into these wonderful characters. A must read book!!
Received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Again, this book is everything I love in a Nora Roberts story. A little magical realism (in my opinion) and a lot of suspense, pain, the power of love and family, and some really beautiful moments. This story had it all. Sometimes, seeing and hearing is believing, and Thea will make a believer out of everyone. Some really amazing characters, including Bray and Bunk! 5 wonderful stars.
As a child Thea witness, the murder of her parents via the eyes of their killer. This opens up a link between the two that spans their lives. This book was intriguing in the way that the two were connected from the time. Theo was a child. After the murder of her parents, Thea and her brother move in with their grandmother who helps them to learn to lead a normal and full life. At the same time, her parents killer is in prison, growing more bitter, angry, and more powerful, and being able to enter minds. I loved the story seeing the relationship between Thea, her brother and grandmother. The final show down between Thea and her parents killer was a mind bend and had you rooting for Thea so she can finally be free.
Thank you to NetGalley and Saint Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read this fantastic book.
A lot of people think Nora Roberts only writes romance books. Don’t get me wrong – she does write romance. But she is adept at combining a mystery as the main plot with a little romance on the side. I find this combination really compelling. This book was no exception.
When Thea and Rem Fox are dropped by their parents at their beloved Grandmother’s home for a summer break, they had no idea it was the last time they would see their parents. A tragic accident took their lives. Both Thea and her grandmother are blessed with an interesting and sometimes frightening capability – second sight. Through very vivid and realistic dreams, they are able to see events in total detail that are happening somewhere else. Thea and her grandmother dreamed of her parents accident and death. Thea is able to use her skills to help protect herself and her family from the evil individual who not only shares her extraordinary capability but wants to use it to do harm – and already has.
The book is suspenseful and exciting and you’ll find it difficult to put down as you wait to find out what happens next.
I love me some Nora Roberts! While this book started with a bang, it quickly slowed down, and I had a bit of a tough time getting through Thea’s childhood. I was setting it down and not wanting to pick it back up for a while, but once I got back into it and we got to Thea’s adulthood, I couldn’t stop reading! This book's slightly magical realism aspects were quite interesting, and there was a romance that I mostly loved but hated at one specific point. The whole cast of characters was really well-rounded and loveable when they were supposed to be and not when they weren’t. Grammie, the dog, the kid, wonderful! Overall, once I got re-invested into this, it was a great read, but it loses a star for the part I struggled with in the beginning. She never truly disappoints.
I absolutely LOVE Nora Roberts. I think she is one of the writers to read of our generation. Nora Roberts knows how to pull a reader quickly into the story. The reader immediately knows and feels for the characters. In Mind Games, we immediately are thrown into a horrible tragedy to two young siblings. We immediately feel the sorrow and anger that Thea and her younger brother Rem experience. As Thea and Rem grow up, Nora does a great job advancing them in age at a decent pace. There is so much in Mind Games. Love, family, trust, betrayal, murder, anger, psychological mind games, sadness and also happiness. There were several times Nora brought me to tears and made me laugh out loud. She made it so I could "see" Lucy and Thea's yards and the chickens. I could "see" the hills of Kentucky. I can "smell" the soaps and lotions Lucy makes. I will read anything written by Nora Roberts and will always recommend her books to people.
Another fantastic Nora Roberts book! Thea is a strong protagonist and I enjoyed following her story as she struggles through the murder of her parents. I also liked that Thea is the focus and not the romance. The Appalachian Mountains setting was visually stunning; Nora makes you feel that you’re actually there. What else can I say? Nora Roberts is a master storyteller.
Thanks so much for the opportunity to read in advance!
Nora Roberts knocked this one out of the park! 5 Stars!!!
Over the years I have read many Nora Roberts books and enjoyed them. I have to say though that "Mind Games" is definitely one of my favorites!
A compelling, entertaining, and heartbreaking story that pulled me in right from the start. The storyline and characters are unforgettable. I finished this awhile back and I'm still thinking about it.
I had the ebook but had to get my hands on the audio too. So glad I did as it was very well performed.
One of my favorite reads this year!
I really enjoyed this book. I know some people don't like a meandering plot in a romance book, the hero doesn't even come in until half-way through, but I liked getting to know our main character and the choices she made. I would've preferred if the hero had found out her "skills" a little earlier but I did like how they handled it.
Overall 10/10, would recommend!
I don't even know what else I can say about Nora Roberts at this point, she can tell a story. The setting in this one was my favorite part. She described the place that the characters lived like no one else can. I wanted to be there in the cozy house, making soap and milking goats.
Watching Thea's lifelong battle to come to terms with what happened to her in her childhood was amazing. Her relationship with her brother and her grandmother. It was all so good!
When Thea and her brother Rem are visiting their grandmother in Kentucky a horrible tragedy happens to their parents . Thea finds herself suddenly having many life changing things happening. With the help of her grandmother Lucy and her brother she finds balance. As she grows into an adult things change and adjust and she learns to live with the gift she has. She also learns what true evil is and what she must do to survive it.
Even though the paranormal genre is not really my thing, I did enjoy this book. Thank you to Netgalley and St Marten’s Press for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
