Can I just say that I love Nora Roberts? This book was a little bit different and I loved it!
Thea and Rem go to their Grandma Lucy’s house for a 2-week summer vacation in Kentucky. While there, the unthinkable happens to Thea and Rem’s parents. Thea witnesses it in her mind.
Thea and Rem end up living with Lucy and the story has them growing up and goes through different times in their life.
Lots of different and fun things go on in this book. A video game designer. A rock star. An amazing Grandmother who owns her own business. A single dad with an adorable son. A large dog. Country living in a small community. Lots of close-knit family time. A kind of mind reading. And amazing female characters in Thea and Lucy.
Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martins Publishing Group, and Nora Roberts team for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Nora Roberts has a different sort of story for us in “Mind Games”. There isn’t really a mystery (except for “how can this end happily?”), but there is a slow build romance that also has its ups and downs.
When Thea was 12 and staying at her Grammie’s in Kentucky for 2 weeks with her 10 year old brother Rem, she and Grammie were tossed into a nightmare — watching her parents murdered back home in Virginia through the eyes of the killer. She can feel his hatred and evil emotions and is further connected when the murderer (Riggs) sees her photo and recognizes she’s in his head — and he can also be in hers. Grammie realizes this is the full awakening of the “gift” that’s passed down among the women of the family, one that was suppressed by Thea’s mom and discouraged when it tried to peek out of her daughter.
Luckily, Thea’s very detailed vision is believed by the police and her description of Riggs leads to his arrest and conviction — but he realizes she’s the reason through his matching supernatural powers and vows eventual revenge. He manages to infiltrate her dreams through the years and up until present day — fifteen years later. Thea has mostly figured out how to block him and has even helped the original detectives with other cases. She’s still in Kentucky and becomes a successful game designer who works remotely. A songwriter with a 4 year old (with a pleasant surprise past) has moved in nearby, and Thea is, ahem, interested. Her gigantic dog, Bunk, is a toddler magnet.
The narrative moves along steadily, but always with underlying tension that Riggs will escape or finally burrow into Thea’s brain.
This is first, and foremost, a tale about family. The paranormal is woven in among the love that different generations have for each other and makes this a unique story. 4 stars!
Literary Pet Peeve Checklist:
Green Eyes (only 2% of the real world, yet it seems like 90% of all fictional females): YES Miss Leona has faded green eyes; Tyler has long green eyes; Granny (Grammie’s mother) has sharp green eyes.
Horticultural Faux Pas (plants out of season or growing zones, like daffodils in autumn or bougainvillea in Alaska): NO Herbs and flowers play a large part in Grammie’s candle-making and soap business — her home “smelled like a garden planted in heaven. Roses and lavender, rosemary and sage, heliotrope and pine, lemon and orange and fresh mown grass.” She also knows that you can plant pansies in the fall and they’ll survive the winter.

I picked this one up after House of Flame and Shadow because I knew Nora Roberts would be able to pull me into this story right away. And I wasn’t wrong! This one pulled me in right away and I enjoyed that it was a little romantic suspense, a little paranormal combining her two usual genres.
I feel like a theme throughout Nora Roberts books is AMAZING grandmas and again here she didn’t disappoint. I loved Lucy and how much she loved Thea and Rem and their whole dynamic. Thea was such a fun character to really shine here and it was pretty cool that she ended up designing video games! It really made her multifaceted. I’m not spoiling who her love interest ends up being, but I really enjoyed their story too.
I will say that the ending kinda felt a little anticlimactic to me. I wanted a little since Thea was such a strong FMC and it felt like there were a few things that didn’t showcase that as best as it could.
This one is out May 21 and you should definitely check it out! Thank you to the publisher for an early copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
My love for Nora Roberts goes way back so I always look forward to her new books, and Mind Games didnt disappoint. I do think that this book seems like it was planned to be one of her fantasy trilogies, but maybe it ended up being changed to a single book. It has three distinct parts and I while I enjoyed each one, I do feel the middle section was rushed in that there was lots of skipping through years. Either way, it was such a compelling story with great characters. I loved Thea and her family. And of course Ty (who didnt see that coming from the moment he was mentioned on the page.) I like the psychic component a lot and wished for a bit more of that.
Overall I really enjoyed. Did some of it feel far fetched and obvious, yes...but still a great read.
Nora Roberts fans will love her latest romantic thriller. A well paced plot with a psychic element to it, some unexpected twists, and her strongest female character to date. Highly recommended
Ms Roberts has written another great book. The story grabs your attention right from the start. I recommend you have a box of facial tissues handy as this story is a real tear jerker. There were times I had to set the book aside and walk away. Nora knows how to immerse the reader into the story and make it real. I highly recommend this book. You will enjoy it.
Thanks to NetGalley and St Martin Press for the ARC. I enjoyed this book.
Mind Games has all the usual Nora Roberts plot hooks - plucky heroine with a heart of gold, swoon-worthy hero, an evil villain, and a touch of the supernatural that makes these books so special. And getting to meet your teeanage crush and have him fall in love with you - what could possibly beat that! If you are a diehard NR fan like me, you will love this one for sure!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the arc.
Twisty, sweet, sexy, and so different for Nora Roberts! After 200 books, this woman can write ANYTHING. I loved the longer story elements of time passing and figuring out exactly how these two would not only meet, but change the game. The heroine was fantastic and believable and I loved the ending. It was SO different and such a great job by Nora Roberts for changing her game!
I loved this book!! At first, it felt like a book about Appalachia and the culture within families. And it certainly is that but then it changed into more with intrigue and fear. I was brought to tears multiple times. The book is so well written that you feel the emotions and there are plenty of them. I grew up in Kentucky and went to the same college as Thea. The Eastern area has a culture that is unique and it was captured beautifully.
I loved this book. I will admit that it was a little slow in the beginning and I got confused about the year it was set in. However, after that - I LOVED IT!! I love grammie aka Lucy and all of her feistyness, she's my fav followed by Rem. I lauhed and cried as what usually happens with a Nora Roberts book. There were some twists, but definately worth the read.
Thank you to Netgalley, Nora Roberts and St. martin's Press for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
AMAZING!!!
I was a little skeptical at first as I'm not part if the "gaming crowd", but what a fantastic read! I couldn't put it down! The twists and turns throughout had me completely hooked.
Another fabulous Nora novel!!
Twelve year old Thea and her brother,REM were just beginning their summer stay with their Grandmother,Lucy in the Kentucky mountains. This was something they looked forward to every year. One night Thea was awakened but a horrible dream of someone breaking into her parents home where they were sleeping and hurting them. She rushed into her Grandmother’s room only to find her trembling on the side of the bed having had the same dream.
Since Thea was young she knew she had a “gift”. Her grandmother had it too. Thea was able to convince the detectives that she had “seen “ the murders and the person who did it! The man was caught and was found to have committed several other murders. He was sent to prison for many years.
Thea and her brother stayed with her Grandmother and thrived. Thea was a graduate in computing and was a whiz at gaming. Soon one of her games caught the attention of her professor and she was soon working with a big company.
Thea started having visions where the murderer,Ray Riggs, was trying to get into her head and threatened her.
Thea moved into a house near her Grandmother and then a young man and his child moved into a nearby. She couldn’t decide if she should let him know about her tragic past or the man who was trying to get inside her head and kill her.
Nora Roberts has another great book! It was a real page turner with a fun twist.
I really wanted to love this book. I fell in love with the characters in Part 1 especially Thea and her gift. Then the rest of the book was very mundane. Sure you got a few interactions between Thea and the villain but it was just the story of her life. Even the ending didn't do for me. It seemed like such an "easy" way out.. I was hoping for that Thea would partner with the police and use her gift to help more victims survive.
Thank you to Netgalley for this ARC
I liked this a lot. Thea is a great character, and this follows her life from tween to adulthood. She has a psychic gift and uses it to help. Her grandmother is also a powerhouse female character, which I loved. The Appalachia setting was also super interesting. I love Nora’s writing and this was another winner from her.
I received an arc from NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
This book will surely send you on an emotional rollercoaster so make sure you have your tissues handy. Beautiful love story with a psychic twist and devastating loss.
At twelve, Thea has no idea the tragedy that lies ahead for her and her family. After the death of her parents her brother Rem and herself are raised by their Grammie Lucy. Thea has to learn how to live with her “sight” and the murderer who intrudes her thoughts.
A new neighbor, who was an old crush, comes to her neck of the woods. Ty and his son Bray captivate Thea and feelings start to rise. Will Ty understand the “sight” and Thea’s abilities or throw their love and friendship away?
Great read and definitely one I would recommend.
One of my favorite N.R. books to date. Family, love, music, rock star, magic. Combine it all together. Equals one wild story with several twist and turns.
MAN, this was a STORY. It started with the fateful summer Thea was twelve and took us through the ups and downs of everything that came after. From dealing with the aftermath of her parents' murder to learning to harness her special gift to falling in love and finding her place in the world, Thea grew into a strong woman with a boundless heart and a willingness to use her ability to help others.
No lie, twelve-year-old Thea's grief was a punch to the chest. The awful circumstances of that terrible night cut her and it was her grandmother's unwavering support and love (along with the support of the other members of that half of the family) that got her through the pain. Although Thea chose her own path when it came to telling what she saw, she told it with grace and dignity and convinced the people who needed to be convinced and that helped put her parents' killer behind bars.
It doesn't end there, though. Thea continues to help when she needs to help and she always, always keeps an eye on the man who sliced her family down the middle. (Which maybe isn't a good thing, but she deals with her grief the only way she knows how as a child and that's by making sure the bad guy is firmly behind bars.)
Throw in some romance (single dad swoonage dialed up to ELEVEN) (and also YESSSS to teenage crushes turning into something more), strong family and community ties, a little heartache, a sprinkling of knowing when the knowing is needed, and a kiddo that brings the cute whenever he shows up and you have a whole lot good stuff going on here. Grammie and Redbud Hollow took the Fox siblings in when they needed them most and BOY did I love it.
I will always read a Nora Roberts book just because I enjoy her writing and how easy it is to read her stories. This one was no different. It was just the right amount of thriller, paranormal and romance. I usually expect the conflict between the two love interests to come sooner, but this one was rather late and wrapped up quick. The ending and how Thea “kicked ass” tied it up all perfectly. 4 Solid Stars Thank you to the publisher for allowing me to read this ARC.
Wow - Just wow! First, let me say I'm a Nora Roberts fan, but this went beyond expectations. Ms. Roberts captured you straight from the beginning. Immersing you in all the goodness about the Fox family and their tight bond as a family. Suddenly you start to become anxious because you know something is coming and that something tears you inside out. It's like the clickety-clack of the roller coaster as it slowly climbs that first scary hill and then BOOM - it's all flying downhill, twisty curves, screams, tears and laughter. I could not put the story of Thea, Rem, their parents and Lucy down. The story never dragged, the characters were well fleshed out and the insidious evil was carefully woven into the story to grab you and not let go, This was contrasted against the beauty of the Kentucky hills, Thea's gift, finding love and true family. What a ride! Bravo, Ms. Roberts. An amazing book.
