I was so excited when I saw this book. The description was awesome and the cover was perfect. I was looking forward to a supernatural romp through the beginning of midlife.
Sadly, I am giving up on this book at 50%. I just can't stand to read any more of it. The plot is moving so slowly it's almost non-existent. The main characters relationships are so immature and shallow that it seems like the age of 40 is just arbitrary. It's more like teen melodrama than a book for more mature readers.
Every single character's eyebrows rise to their hairline, which is both impossible and an irritating repetition. The main character sticks her tongue out at characters more times than any grown woman should. It's admitted that the 16 year old daughter is more adult than her mother.
But overall, the main character is so churlish and childish, she totally turned me off. She's instantly trading puerile jibes with the ghosts which just didn't match what I expected. At 50% she hasn't even had a conversation with the ghost that's showed up in her home. They just trade stupid insults and she seems content with that. Given the way this ghost came into her life and the fact that he's possibly connected to her late husband, it doesn't make sense to me for her to behave this way.
Also, things occur very abruptly in this book. She goes to see the medium, who she instantly dislikes and then suddenly she and the medium are hanging out together. There's no intermediate portion to show how they got to that.
To me, this read more like a first draft, with lots of promise, rather than a complete novel that should be shared with the reading public. I hope they'll go back and finesse this before releasing it. There's a lot missing as is.
I was so let down by this book. It was a great premise that just didn't pan out for me.

I love an older FMC. It hard getting into books now with younger characters. This was a very cute spooky read for fall.
