Although I felt the main character was extremely naive and very much a pushover, I still enjoyed this book. It was dark, and definitely full of twists and turns. It kept me intrigued all the way through.
Literally sped to the end! This is a compulsive read where money and power come to play with lots of dysfunction in one family including the matriarch who is dead-set on having her way - even if it means murder!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC!
My first time reading Dawson’s work and I couldn’t be happier with The Night She Lied by Lucy Dawson.
Really enjoyed this book. It moves along at a very good pace.
This story moves along at a good pace and is compulsive, engaging and suspenseful.
I would like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this ahead of its publication date in return for my honest review.
Jude is working overnight in the ER due to her insomnia and on a night that is harder than most she meets a man name Rick who seems kind and sympathetic she’s been alone for a year and a half since losing her partner Dominic. Jude‘s mother lady Margaret Fox is a stern ego driven and unemotional parent. Like her daughter Jude she has suffered many losses recently but when a man from her past charges her with sexual assault it is a scandal in their little village the reaches all the way to London. When Jude puts two into together she hast to confess to her mom that Rick is the Richard that is charging her in court. Needless to say lady fox is enraged and tells Jude to fix it to go straight back to London and tell Richard that she will put everything out in the open all his secrets
If he doesn’t drop this lawsuit. The only problem is when Jude confronts Richard he puts doubts in her head that her mom isn’t as innocent as she claims, but it’s something he said that has her running to his penthouse late that night when she arrives however things doesn’t go quite how she thought they would and by the time she leaves it will be in handcuffs. There is so much more to this story and what a Great story it is. From the great character of the lady Margaret fox who is capable independent and fierce to her naïve daughter Jude Who always seems on the verge of a breakdown the book has such great characters side plots and an awesome ending I want to thank the publisher Net Galley for my free arc copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
Thank you to #NetGalley, #Bookouture and Lucy Dawson for the opportunity to read THE NIGHT SHE LIED, to be published 16 November 2023. 4/5 Stars for this suspenseful novel about mother-daughter relationships and a resulting murder surrounded by family secrets. Jude, an A&E nurse, inadvertently becomes involved with a man she later learns was suing her mother on a historical sexually related charge. Unfortunately, Jade becomes inextricably connected to this case and must find a way out of it. A little of a slow burn. #NetGalley #Bookouture #LucyDawson #TheNightSheLied
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC .
Jude is a nurse who is trying to get used to night-shift while dealing with the grief of losing her partner. As if that wasn't enough, her mother, Margaret, ends up in trouble with the law. Jude has to deal with her mother's legal problems and family secrets.
I read the book over the course of a few days but I wanted to finish it the day I started it. There were so many twists and turns and each one took me right along with it.
Super interesting read!! This had great suspense throughout while weaving in the complexities of mother and daughter relationships among other family dynamics. First book of this author and I’m a major fan! Read in a day and a half.
So I found this a bit confusing and quite a slow burn to start with but j loved how original the plot sounded similar that made me stuck with it and I'm actually glad I did. It's really unique and it is well written. The characters aren't the most likeable and it's quite a dark story but it's definitely well written and I had no idea what the truth was going to turn out to be. To be honest, I'm still mot entirely sure what the trust ended up being but hey, I loved the journey none the less. Definitely something different
This is the first book I’ve read from this author but hopefully it won’t be the last . The book had a great story which had me gripped from the first page . I loved the characters the gradual unfolding of the events leading up to the court case . Definitely a five star from me
DNF, slow build that I just could not get into. Will definitely attempt another read by the author though!
This one left me a bit puzzled. Yes, I know the “verdict” but I’m not sure I know what “really” happened. I wish I had more clarity on the guilt or innocence of the main character. This moved a bit slowly for the first half of the book and then picked up a bit.
It's midnight in the hospital when Jude's phone rings, interrupting her precious fifteen-minute break. When she sees it's her seventy-one-year-old mother, Margaret, she braces herself for the usual complaints. But her blood runs cold at four words that will change everything.... "Something terrible has happened." Margaret has been accused of an unspeakable crime committed twenty-years-ago. She insists she's not guilty, and begs Jude to help her prove it. But as Jude is drawn into the dark secrets of her family's past, she starts to question whether her mother is as innocent as she claims to be.
I was quickly pulled into this story. It was hard to tell what was a lie. I quite liked Jude to begin with, but I couldn't stand her mother, Margaret. Margaret has been accused of a historical sex crime, but she denies that she has anything to do with it. The story has been descriptively written. The characters are a mix of likable and unlikable. Filled with twists and family secrets, it's also quite a dark read. I quire enjoyed the courtroom scenes, The story flips back and forth in time between the past and present day.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #LucyDawson for my ARC of #TheNightSheLied in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks so much Bookouture and NetGalley.
Jude's phone rings in the middle of her break at the hospital. It's her mom and she has been accused of a crime that happened seventy years ago. She says that she is innocent and wants Jude's help. Jude's not sure as more info comes forward.
I found the story to be a bit confusing as it switched from first person to third person, past to present. I did like how Jude's character evolved and how family loyalty was tested. I wish more characters were likable though. There were some good twists and the story was interesting enough for me to finish.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for giving me a free eARC of this book to read in exchange for my review!

read the synopsis for The Night She Lied and it sounded like something I would like. I've read other books by this author and liked them. This one, not so much. It switched from first person to third person, to past to present. I had a hard time following the story. The beginning started out strong, then kid of got confusing. It didn't help that I found the characters very unlikable and flat. I literally read the ending 3 times and still it didn't make much sense to me. There were a few good plot twists, but overall, this was not the book for me.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for the ARC. I greatly appreciate it, and sadly, I do not recommend this book.
Initially, I felt a connection with Jude as a character, and I liked the way she seemed to connect with the other characters. As I carried on reading though, I found I didn't really connect with any of the other characters, and the story in general didn't really hold my interest, even though the writing was good.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for a free copy to review.

I'd like to express my gratitude to Bookouture, Lucy Dawson, and NetGalley for providing me with the opportunity to read this ARC and share my honest review.
yuk what an awful character in Margaret - very well written though as I loathed her and what she did/how she acted
As for Jude I did sympathise,a lot BUT that started to wear thin as she time and again continued to let her Mum speak to her the way she did, most if not everyone would have snapped
Some interesting twists and a good ending
Not pleasant reading sometimes but really well character driven book
Phew! I’ve done nothing today except read this book from start to finish. What I absolutely loved about it was the writing. Superb. At one point my partner asked me if I was enjoying the story. I answered that I was, but even if I wasn’t I would continue reading because the writing was so incredible. Brilliant descriptions of everything, and the court scenes were amazing. I really felt as if I was there.
Some of the characters in the book were loathsome, particularly Margaret and Benedict, but I very much warmed to Johnnie and Timothy. Not so sure about Jude. I had some empathy with her at the beginning but she made some stupid decisions, and would she really have put up with such a horrible mother?
The only reason I can’t quite give this 5 stars is that I am frustratingly left with lots of unanswered questions, all beginning with ‘Why did …?’. I can’t list them here because I don’t reveal the story to others in my short reviews, and I can never understand others who do. Why bother reading the book if you know what happens? Anyway, this was a fabulous read and it’s one that I’ll be reading again at some point to try and work out the answers to my questions! Highly recommended, and thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read and review. Fabulous!
