OMG, What a rollercoaster ride of twists and turns. Just when I thought that we had reached the end and there were no more revelations to come, BAM another twist in the plot. I would never have imagined the ending of the book in a thousand years. I am a fan of K.L Slater's books, but this one quickly became my favorite by her! I thoroughly enjoyed the alternating POVs of the book and the flashbacks speckled throughout the book. I found myself empathizing with Nicola throughout, from both a wife and mother standpoint. I also could understand her frustration from her daughter-in-law and her parents they were trying to frame her son for something he didn't do and couldn't defend himself. I found myself hoping against hope that he would not go down for a crime he didn't commit.
I would highly recommend this novel to anyone looking for a good, twisty domestic thriller. You will not be disappointed.
This is my first book by Slater and it did NOT disappoint! The characters, the plot, the twists - I couldn't put this one down! I tend to be wary of books that flip back and forth between different timelines, but this one was written in a way that was easy to follow and made the ending so much better! There were enough subtle clues to lead you down one path before being faced with yet another twist - I had a hard time deciding who I could trust, and I was STILL wrong in the end! Definitely make sure you pick this one up!
A husband and wife, Luna and Parker seem to have marital problems and then it seems that Parker got in over his head and is in trouble.
Luna's parents are snobs, have money and seem to control their daughter's life along with Parkers. Parker's parents are the opposite but he isn't close to his dad, just his mom. An accident happens which causes and effect you would not believe. The twist at the end was a little bit more than I had expected but there was one twist I wasn't really surprised.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for the arc.
KL Slater is one of my favourite authors, I have read every book she has published so far, so it was a no-brainer that I was going to read this.
Husband and Wife starts with Parker Vance and his wife Luna dropping their son Barney off at Parker’s parent's house for the night.
Later in the night, they are involved in a serious car accident while Parker is fighting for his life, his mother Nicola, is trying to clear his name for murder!
This was a fantastic book, I was hooked throughout, there were so many secrets and lies that I was left shocked when the reveals happened.
The book had multiple character’s points of view and alternated from past and present. It flowed nicely and I liked getting to know each character, even if I didn’t particularly like certain characters.
As always KL Slater wrote an absolutely gripping book and I would definitely recommend this book and all of her books.
Go grab it now!
This is such a good book! So many really clever red herrings, leading you down so many different garden paths, it really was unputdownable because it just made you want to know who the culprit was.
Highly recommend as it´s such a clever plot, really good writing, and totally unexpected!
My thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read an advanced digital copy in return for an honest review.
A new K.L. Slater book is always highly anticipated, I've loved every one of them that I've read, and that's a fair few.
As always, it didn't disappoint and Slater has outdone herself by coming up with another blinder. I quickly became hooked on the plot and before I knew it the afternoon had gone, and I'd finished the book in one sitting.
Husband and Wife is an addictive, pacey read, full of intrigue and suspense as we go on a twisty ride with parents Nicola and Cal as they try to navigate their way through the carnage brought to their doorstep since son Parker's road accident.
For me the characters were very marmitey and I found I couldn't warm to any of them for a while because I was dubious of all of them, apart from young Barney.
Loved the twist at the end and thoroughly enjoyed the book. In my eyes it's definitely Slater's best to date.
𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒊𝒔 𝒂 𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒃𝒂𝒅 𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒖𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒂 𝒇𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒕 𝒓𝒖𝒎𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒂𝒇𝒂𝒓 𝒐𝒓 𝒂 𝒅𝒊𝒎𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒇 𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕, 𝑰'𝒎 𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆'𝒔 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒔𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆.
Parker Vance and his wife Luna are both hospitalized, fighting for their lives after a horrific car accident. The night before the accident, Parker told his mother Nicola that he needed to talk to her the next day, saying that he had something very important to tell her that she couldn't tell anyone.
That's all it took to pique my curiosity, and because Parker was in such bad shape after the accident, Nicola couldn't get the secret out of him. The tension amps up when Nicola uses her son's keys to access his family home to get things for her grandson, who is staying with her and her husband. She is shocked to find a 'For Sale' sign in the front yard and even more shocked to find that her son and his wife are sleeping in separate rooms. But what really gets her is finding a bag stuffed in the garbage bin (yes, she's a bit of a snooper) with a distinctive scarf at the bottom. She knows she's seen it somewhere before, and then it hits her--she's seen it on the evening news. The scarf belongs to a young woman who police surmise was strangled with it.
Told from multiple points of view with a very diverse and often unlikeable set of characters, this was a thriller full of secrets and twists. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the red herrings that led to the ultimate shocking end. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this early read. HUSBAND AND WIFE is available now.
Explosive as always. I have always loved a Kl Slater Novel as they start out so normally but then the action hits you like a wave!! Highly recommended!
This was not what I was expecting. There is a he said she said, but the he is in the hospital on life support. Thats a new one for me and domestic suspense at its best. And both the he and she have some secrets. Everyone is speaking for him. His mother is protecting him even though she rarely spends any time with him anymore. And his wife and her family are pointing fingers at him. A lady was murdered that seemed to have some secrets of their own and potentially a connection to the he and she.
I had no idea where this one was headed. I was just along for the ride. No idea who was believable and when any were lying to save face. I’m not sure I liked any of the characters, but I tried to like Nicola, the he’s mother, but I was really starting to question some of her choices.
I love the author’s writing style. It is easy to read. I flew through this one wondering who was the murderer and why. I flipped back and forth on this over and over and wasn’t right.
If you are a fan of a twisty domestic suspense novel, then you need to pick this one up.
I either completely shut my brain off while reading this so every reveal took me by surprise or this is really that twisty of a book... probably the first. I enjoyed myself but I don't think I will be thinking about this book for much past the time this posts. I think it was a little too long than was necessary which knocked down the rating for me (3.75 out of 5 but I just couldn't convince myself to round this up to a 4). Multiple POVs and timelines.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I'm a big fan of KL Slater. She devises intriguing plots with ingenious twists. At the same time, her characters are believable and we invest in their storyline.
A husband and wife, Parker and Luna, are in hospital after a terrible car crash, one of them critically injured. A lot of the focus of the novel is on the middle aged parents of the couple. Parker's mother Nicola, who recently had cancer treatment, is keen to look after their grandson while the couple are hospitalized, but she makes a sinister discovery.
Parallel to the police investigation, she starts making her own inquiries into what's happening. Nicola has a strong sense of duty and a strong moral compass. She is one of those women who would betray her family if she knew they were engaged in illegal activities.
There are lots of twists and turns, and quite unexpected developments, as Nicola, and the police, independently unravel a complex web of intrigue and deceit.
As with all KL Slater's books, it had an excellent pace and kept me fully engaged and needing to know the outcome.
Another great story from K L Slater.. So many twists and turns that I would never have expected. Gripping from start to finish as expected from this author. Highly recommended
Many thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ARC in return for an honest review
I have read a number of K.L. Slater's previous books so couldn't wait to dive into this and I wasn't disappointed.
The story revolves around the tumultuous marriage of Parker and Luna, who seem to have it all but are hiding dark secrets. When an unexpected event shakes their lives, they find themselves trapped in a web of deception and betrayal.
It was engaging, easy to follow and compelling. The pacing was good, the mystery was intriguing with some excellent but unexpected twists and turns and with a cast of interesting characters, not all of them being particularly likeable.
'Husband and Wife' delves into themes of trust, betrayal and the consequences of hiding the truth. It forces you to question the nature of relationships and the lengths to which people are willing to go to protect their secrets.
This is a riveting psychological thriller that doesn't disappoint and if you are a fan of this genre, I recommend giving this book a read.
Thank you to the author, Bookouture and NetGalley for enabling me to read and share my thoughts of this compelling book.
This was my first book by this author and it won’t be my last!
This story starts with a woman missing and then found murdered. We meet Parker and his wife Luna who are close with her parents but not so much his. However, Parker’s parents are watching their son on the night they get in a horrible accident. His mom goes to their house and finds evidence that could link them to the murdered woman. What will his mom do to help protect her son while he is in critical condition from the accident when his wife is ready to implicate him.
This is a dual timeline with events leading up to the murder and present day. The clues given to us make it an easy case to solve but obviously there are secrets and twists along the way!
This is a real page turner and keeps you guessing right till the end. It’s about families and the lies and secrets they keep, and what we would all do to protect those we love. I loved and empathised with Nicola and was rooting for her all the way through. I enjoyed the short chapters and the writing was excellent. Secrets are revealed slowly throughout the story, and just when you know who ‘did it’ you find out that you’re completely wrong. A fabulous read! Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review.
Two people are fighting for their lives after a road traffic accident - Parker Vance and his wife Luna. They both have secrets, but one of them is lying about something very serious. Who is it? You decide!
The night before the accident, Parker had told his mother, Nicola, he needed to talk to her the next day - “I have something very important to tell you. But you mustn’t tell anyone...”
Well, of course I was desperate to discover what was so important, and why did it have to be a secret between the two of them. But Nicola can’t talk to her son now because he’s literally fighting for his life.
Told from multiple perspectives, with a very divisive set of characters, this was a story that gripped and wouldn’t let go. It had the inevitable twists, and I have to say they were totally unexpected. The author has a powerful gift for keeping her audience permanently on edge. Highly recommended.
K L Slater is one of my go to authors when I'm looking for a good psychological thriller with plenty of twists and turns. This one certainly didn't disappoint. As the chapters progressed the plot seemed more and more convoluted and every time I thought I knew what was going on there was another shock just waiting to knock me off my feet. Definitely one of her better stories.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book
Husband and Wife is an utterly gripping and unputdownable domestic suspense thriller . Right from the start I was absorbed into the story and read this book in one sitting. Of course I knew in my head where the story was going and who the culprit actually was… until the reveal and I was left utterly flabbergasted. Yes I truly was and I love when that happens in a book . This is such a well written read with some great characters and not all of them nice . KL Slater writes such brilliant suspense thrillers and you are guaranteed to be in for a twisty ride and this one was certainly no exception.
Husband and Wife was another fantastic read by K. L. Slater. I always enjoy her books, and this one was no exception. In this book, everyone has secrets and just when you think you know who is responsible, the author switches things up, and you begin to question if you are correct. I thought I knew where this was going so many times, only to discover I was wrong! And wow - the twist at the end was well worth the wait. Overall, this was a quick and fun read. I would definitely recommend it!
BOOM — DYNAMITE!
The British Queen of thrills, K.L. Slater, pulls out all the stops in her latest twisty, fast-paced psychological thriller, HUSBAND AND WIFE —her BEST yet! Deserving of an award for the best non-linear plot, crafted with finesse, a brilliant storytelling technique in which the narrative is told out of chronological order.
Jumping back and forth in time (like a yo-yo) but clearly defined, the author cleverly weaves multiple plot lines, unreliable narrators, and timelines to create a cohesive, unputdownable story that will have your heart beating with suspense, glued to the pages until the end! Only K.L. Slater could pull this off like a rock star!
Unreliable narrators, dark secrets, deceit, betrayal, trust, protection, and a web of lies. How far will each go to protect their loved ones? Where nothing is as it appears.
Meet the players:
Parker and Luna (Main Characters)
Barney (Parker & Luna's young son)
Nicola and Cal (Parker's parents)
Marie and Jo (Luna's parents)
Sarah (young mother found murdered)
EXPLOSIVE: When one wrong deed turns into a domino effect—it causes irreparable damage and harm to everyone involved.
A cautionary tale that could be ripped from today's true-crime headlines. Never cover up, assist, or keep deadly secrets! They will come back to haunt you.
Parker and Luna have dropped off their son at Parker's parent's house (Nicola and Cal) for a sleepover. They are to have a night out for a function and 'staying' over at a hotel. (The British seem to call this 'stopping')
Nicola (a former cancer patient) and loving mother/grandmother is concerned about her son. He seems distant, and they hardly see their grandson. Parker told Nicola he had something to say to her the following morning (Saturday), and he did not want his father or wife to overhear. But there is an accident before he has a chance.
Nicola and Cal live a modest life, and Cal owns a small plumbing, heating, and air conditioning company. Parker was never interested in his dad's business and closer to his mom. Parker is an ambitious and successful businessman in sales and has done very well. Luna is a fashion influencer.
Luna's parents, Joe/Marie, are wealthy and look down on Parker's family. He was not quite good enough for her family. Therefore, Parker's parents seldom see their grandson since most of the time is spent with her family.
For some reason, Parker and Luna do not stay overnight at the hotel and are instead involved in a horrible car accident. Parker's injuries are worse than Luna's. Barney is still at Nicola's house, and she gets the keys to go to Parker's house to gather more clothes and items for Barney for an extended stay.
However, when she is there, she sees things that make her concerned. They are sleeping in separate bedrooms. The house is for sale? What is going on? Then she is about to leave and notices everyone's trash bins are out, so she puts them out and discovers a bag behind them. It looks like good stuff, so she takes it home with her.
When she discovers a scarf inside that looks like the scarf on the news, she is distraught. What is going on? Could her son or daughter-in-law be involved in a murder?
A young mother, Sarah, has been strangled and murdered in an alley. There were no suspects, even though a car like Parker's was seen near the crime scene, but he was away at a conference and not a suspect.
Nicola cannot let this go. She must hold on to this scarf until she can speak with her son. But he says a few words that chill her to the bone. Then, he is put into an induced coma and not able to speak further about the scarf.
Told from POV: Nicola, Parker, Luna, Sarah, Maria, and the Nottinghamshire Police detectives—bouncing from one time period to another, past and present, when the dark secrets are slowly unraveled in this complex web of lies and deceit.
OMG! This twisty mystery of domestic suspense will have you guessing and second-guessing every character and their motives. It is not until around 70% that the real killer is revealed, and all the puzzle pieces and players start coming together. I will say I guessed the second twist; however, it did not alter my level of entertainment.
Your loyalties will change throughout the book as the author keeps you on the edge of your seat!
Wow! HUSBAND AND WIFE IS INTENSE! With mounting suspense, tension, unreliable narrators, red herrings, and a spectacular non-linear timeline —A STELLAR domestic suspense and one of Slater's best!
Like a stick of dynamite that simmers and finally explodes! Great characterization, well-written, multi-layered, complex, emotional, perfectly paced, and mega-uber twisty. 5 Stars +. Trust me, I stayed up two nights until the wee hours of the morning with no sleep as HUSBAND AND WIFE is utterly unputdownable!
I am a big fan of the author and have read almost all her books; however, HUSBAND AND WIFE is like nothing I have ever read, and well done, Queen Slater! The novel would make for a great movie!
Sarah's part reminded me of A. R. Torre's The Girl in 6E (minus the erotic part). For fans of K.L. Slater and Freida McFadden—those who enjoy well-written psychological thrillers.
Special thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for an advanced digital reading copy.
