Wild Magic
by: Alexandra Ivy
THOUGHTS:
I want to thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for giving me the opportunity to read an e-arc in exchange for my honest review.
This is my first book by Alexandra Ivy and I loved every single minute of this book. I love a beautifully written paranormal romance and that is just what we were given. The world building, the characters, plot/setting—they were all wonderfully written and I felt as though I was living inside this book. I sat down and read this book in a weekend curled up with a cozy blanket and a hot cup of tea. If you love mages, demons, fairies, vampires, goblins—this book will be for you. I loved watching the leads in this book navigate their relationship together and watch them grow throughout the book. I just thought this book was beyond delightful and I think that this will be a wonderful fit for our book club when it releases. This is a must have on your TBR and a must read really for anytime of the year but it was perfect for this spooky season when I read it. I will be on the lookout for more of Alexandra’s writing.
This book was action and humor from the very beginning. I love that Peri is a strong and capable main character, she doesn’t take crap from anyone. Although she guards her past and herself from everyone, she is protective of those she sees as family or innocent. Just when she thinks she has put the past behind her, an incident causes her to return home and face the horrors of her past. Will Peru’s Magic be enough to keep her safe?
Valen is in charge of the Gyre (the area/town/city) he is the ultimate power and the protector of those within it. He is not use to having anyone call him out on his crap or challenge him. I mean, seriously, who would take the chance at possible death against a Vampire in charge? Peri that’s who!
He is drawn to her like no other, after 2000 years, he has finally met his match. The need to protect her, causes him to throw himself in the middle of her investigation.
Together they must unravel the mysteries surrounding the incident and each other.
Thank you to Lyrical Press, Kensington Publishing Corp. and Netgalley for giving me a copy of this book.
This is such a fun and quick read. I love the storyline, and romance is just secondary (a very slow burn). I love how everything was so easy to understand. I totally enjoyed this book.
As a huge fantasy lover I was expecting to love this, but it missed the mark slightly. I found the start just that little bit too slow while the story was introduced with the characters.
Overall it was interesting and I liked the murder mystery type vibe as mage Peri had to work together with vampire Valen.
A wide range of characters helped increase the interest.
Thank you to the publisher, author and Netgalley for the copy of this book. Wild Magic is the first of what I hope is a new paranormal romance series by Alexandra Ivy. I have never read this author before but I will be adding her to my list of go-to authors.
Peri Sanguis is a mage living in New Jersey in the territory of Valen the vampire, who is in charge of keeping the demons in line. She works in the Witches Brew along with her two best friends. While subject to Valen's laws, she keeps out of his way, making sure her side business stays under his radar. Her life is pretty normal (as much as a mage with wild magic's life can be), until her estranged mother, and her entire coven are killed. Enter the sexy Vampire who needs to find out how and why a coven of witches were killed. The two have to work together (forced proximity, Yay!) following the clues which lead them to the discovery of an ancient evil. They have to learn to trust each other to stop it before it's too late.
The book drew me from the first page and never let me go. Peri was funny, brave, stubborn and drove Valen mad, in a good way. The rebellious heroine thing can get real annoying in some books, but not in this one. When she needed to let him lead, she did. Likewise, he didn't do that alpha thing when he expected her to submit to him. I loved how Valen was with her and how the two respected each other.
It is a slow burn (molasses!) and there were minor annoying over-usage of some terms and words, but otherwise the book was fun, and a quick read. I was able to finish it in one day and I stopped to make dinner. I recommend it if you are in the mood for a sexy vampire, banter, and a kick booty heroine with wild magic.
In the captivating series Wild Magic by Alexandra Ivy, the collision of old-world demons, modern-day mages, and an irresistible attraction unleashes desire as the most potent and perilous weapon of all. With its well-crafted characters and intriguing storyline, this spellbinding series takes readers on a thrilling journey into a world where magic reigns supreme.
Peri is a fierce mage, who loves her found family deeply. Valen is a powerful vampire that will do anything to keep Peri safe. The story has some slow parts but overall, it was an enjoyable read.
This is a solid book with interesting world building and original characters. I found Alexandra Ivy’s interpretation of the supernatural fascinating: she presents witches and mages from a same source, but with different societal roles risks, vampires who exist in a finite number, fae of differing natures and powers. It was novel and well developed.
I loved the couple: Peri is a bada*& mage who has survived the worst sort of betrayal, but has built herself a successful life in her chosen family. Valen is powerful and protective, but knows when to step back. He’s in charge without being authoritative or limiting Peri’s agency. My first quibble in reading this is that I wasn’t as enamoured by Maya or how the Benefactor is presented: it felt like I should understand more or as I had missed some pages instead of simply being a mystery that will unravel as the series progresses.
I have never read any other titles by this author, but I could tell immediately that this is an experienced writer with solid mechanics and careful editing. It was a great read and I look forward to the next part in this series, although — and here’s my second quibble — I can’t figure out if this is a series centred on Peri/Valen or if the focus shifts with the next title.
Wild Magic is a quick, fun, paranormal book. I liked the premise, the characters, the magic, and the world (I wish there had been a tiny bit more world building). I also really enjoyed the vibes of this book for spooky season and love the cover.
It was an okay story. Very slow moving for me. didn't feel much like a romance as more of a suspense or thriller.
Peri is a mage, and Valen is a powerful vampire. They make a great couple. Liked this one, as usual, by this author, although I did find the "wild magic" part a bit confusing. Not sure what it is or where it came from? Obviously not from her wicked mother, perhaps her father? A good mystery and romance, and one I would highly recommend.
Wild Magic is such a fast, easy fantasy read! It had mystery and action and just enough slow burn romance and sexual tension between the two main characters to keep you invested. I loved Valen and Peri as a couple, but I also really loved them individually as their own person. Peri is such a strong female main character, fierce and independent and uncompromising. At one point in the book she says "I'm not a half-of-a-whole sort of woman. I'm whole all by myself." And UGH I love that. I feel that. Valen is just as independent, but with a protective, alpha male demeanor that is so endearing. I love that even though he's protective of Peri, he still gets that she is a strong woman who can take care of herself. The only thing I found lacking is the ending. I totally get that the author is leading into the next book, and I like a good cliffhanger as much as the next person, but it felt really abrupt. I am still absolutely eager for more and will definitely be continuing to read the series as they come out! Thank you to Netgalley for the e-arc in exchange for an honest review!
This book was quite good, it had some interesting concepts that I had not seen before. My favourite part of the book was the points of view, it was incredibly done and made you feel like you get a full view of the world, and the characters. The only part that I did not like much was the first twenty pages of the book. It set up the characters strangely and does not feel like the rest of the book, but if you push past it, the book is great.
I received an arc of this book. I absolutely loved this book. From the first chapter until the end I could not put it down. This is my first time reading a book from this author. I love a good paranormal romance and this book did not disappoint. It was a slow burn but the story itself was great and held my interest. The leads have a chemistry that makes you root for them even if they are not sure. I cannot wait for the next book in this series.
From a Wyoming ranch to a New Jersey bookstore-café, when old-world demons, modern-day mages, and irresistible attraction collide, desire becomes the most powerful and dangerous weapon of all.
Wild Magic is a fantasy/paranormal romance that follows Peri Sanguis as she is sucked into solving the mystery surrounding the deaths of her estranged mother and her coven. After barely escaping with her life when she was 16, Peri is forced to return to her mother's Wyoming ranch following the suspicious deaths where she finds the unexpected partnership with Valen, the vampire that rules over her new hometown.
Solid 4 stars, I wish this had been a bit longer to help develop a bit more backstory for all of the characters, and the final chapter was an excellent set up for the next book in the series. I'm usually a romance reader first and foremost, but I really appreciated that the romance was light and on the back burner for most of this book. The tension and interactions between the MCs helped move the plot along really well instead of being the main focus.
When old-world demons, modern-day mages, and irresistible attraction collide, desire becomes the most powerful and dangerous weapon of all, in this spellbinding new series from New York Times bestselling author Alexandra Ivy . . .
Great plot, great characters, great world-building. I look forward to the rest of the series.
This was a quick, fun read. Maybe a little too fast? The world-building could have been developed more but I really enjoyed the characters and that made up for it. Their banter was cute and funny and each one had a unique arc of their own.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to review. Opinions are my own.
I've not read this Author before but I love a good paranormal romance. I was really pleasantly surprised. The world is nicely drawn out as a place where magic exists in pockets called gyres where demons and fairies converge so they can feel normal. Mages also like to hang out there because magic. I gather from my read that demons and fairies are like the major groups and Vampires and goblins are subsections of them. Humans are of course oblivious. At any rate our ML is the Vampire ruler of NYC who rules with an iron fist and is utterly fascinated by our FL. She is a mage ( not a witch those are nearly powerless humans that are outside the system) with amazing amounts of power and a really sad backstory. So it's a bit like a billionaires girlfriend trope but with a mystery to solve. The FL is drawn back to her former home and her nasty mother whose quest for power has led to the death of her coven and crazy evil mojo. The relationship between our leads is cute, kinda expected in ways hence trope. But it was nice. What I enjoyed even more was the story of the leads trying to figure out a mystery and protect their communities while navigating their relationship. This is a fun book and a good weekend read. Definitely enjoyed it. Thanks to Netgalled and A. Ivy's publisher for letting me get a read. Romance lovers will enjoy this one so go read it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. (via Netgalley)
Actual review close to 3.75 stars. The pacing was good, making it an easy read. Only thing I wasn't a fan of was it going from instalust (fine lol) to instalove (less fine imo).
Peri is a Mage who escaped her mother and coven with her life. She has a found family and living life when her mother is mysteriously killed. It is up to Peri and her enemy, Valen, to solve the evil that has been unleased in their world.
I thoroughly enjoyed this quick read and can't wait to continue to read the second book in this series. I will say I wish it could have been a little longer and the author took more time for character development and world building.
