This nonfiction book is geared towards elementary-aged kids, and it has simple text and bright, beautiful illustrations, introducing common Lunar New Year traditions from the perspective of a young Chinese girl. Throughout the book, this fictional character explains to the reader about how her family prepares for and celebrates Lunar New Year, and I liked the chatty style.

Some parents will want to know that this book includes vague references to "the gods" without providing context to really explain the main character's religion, or how it more deeply relates to Lunar New Year. I would have liked a little more context here, and also think it would have been nice if the author had included details about how people of different faiths or no religious background adapt aspects of this holiday.

Although the main character is Chinese, the author also includes some details about how other Asian cultures celebrate this holiday. There is even more information summarized at the end, and the author includes ideas for different activities that readers can do to celebrate this holiday.

Lunar New Year by Natasha Yim is a great way to introduce others to the holiday and the cultures and traditions that truly make it a tradition. It was fun learning about the traditions and how different cultures celebrate Lunar New Year. Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read this book. A very beautiful children's book about the Lunar New Year!

Though this particular story takes place in China, it also acknowledges that the Lunar New Year is also celebrated in other places.

It is divided into three part, the first part being the story of a little girl getting everything ready with her family to celebrate, and explaining the different traditions.

A second part gives some more information about the festival of the Lunar New Year, such as its history and some greetings, while the third part gives some activities to do, crafts, and cooking recipes.

It is a lovely and inclusive book, filled with colourful and amazing illustrations!

Very nice narrative book of Lunar New Year with details of tradition and colorful activities. This will be a great introduction book for elementary school ages students about what people do during Lunar New year.

For somebody who works in early years this was lovely to read to the children and to build their knowledge of celebrations around the world. The children loved the bright colours and lovely images.

5. Fun activities such as riddle creating and a craft.
6. Lastly, a fun pop quiz.

It is a perfect informational picture book to educate anyone of any age. Ideal for ages 4 and up.

This book is packed full of Lunar New Year traditions, crafts, and food! I was surprised to find not only a colorful story about a young girl celebrating Lunar New Year with her family, but a ton of fun activities and explanatory materials in the back (from making dumplings to red envelopes!). Excellent introduction to the holiday that is perfect for kids and adults reading together!

Excellent coverage of The Lunar New Year, a true gap in the market for teaching young children without the stereotypical label of Chinese New Year, I loved the links to countries around the world that also celebrate. I would definitely purchase this to use in my classroom, as would the other 3 EYFS classes and beyond

First of all, thank you for calling this Lunar New Year instead of the often overused Chinese New Year. Many East and Southeast Asian cultures celebrate Lunar New Year. Inclusivity and all that.

This is a very cute and beautifully illustrated story about Mei and her family. Mei is the Chinese version of my name, so props for that. I'm so easy to please. (Just kidding.)

Along with the Lunar New Year bit, thank you for including snippets of other cultures that celebrate this holiday, including Filipinos, Koreans, and Vietnamese. Obviously there are more, but I enjoyed the spotlights made.

Sadly, I'm at that age where I give more red envelopes than I receive. Alas.

In any case, this is a cute book for kids that are a part of this culture, and for those that aren't. I enjoy buying multicultural books for the children in my life. It never hurts to learn about other people, places, and things.

It start with the presentation of the lunar new year events from the point of view of a young girl. In this part we see various tradition and their meaning. The last few pages are more informative with a presentation of various aspect of this holiday; its history, tradition, a few sentences in Cantonese or Mandarin, etc.

It also come with a recipe for dumpling, a craft idea and a quiz.

Overall it’s a very diverse book on the lunar holiday. Perfect for anyone who wants to explore major celebrations from around the world.

The language is very simplistic, but it is too long for young children. It might be best for those who already know how to read, but then I’m not sure they would enjoy the simplistic language. My uncertainty toward the audience is why I’m not giving it 5 stars.

The drawings are cute and colourful.

I love collecting good quality books about holidays that are celebrated around the world. This will be a valuable read aloud and resource with lots of information for Lunar New Year. I can't wait to add this to my home and classroom libraries!

An amazing and fun way to learn about the Chinese/Lunar New Year. I personally learned things I never knew. Beautiful illustrations and a personal story for one family, makes this a great book for anyone.

We see everything involved in getting the celebrations ready and the joy involved when sharing together. The colorful illustrations capture the mood and offer further details for readers. The informative text included at the end lets readers create their own parts of the New Year celebration. I love how Yim offers a view at this special time.

“Lunar New Year” by children’s author Natasha Yim and illustrated by Jingting Wang is a wonderful picture book to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

The story details the preparations for the 15-day celebration and some of Ling and her family’s annual traditions. There is less narrative plot in this book, favouring descriptions of cleaning, cooking, and festivities – so the story may be a better introduction for younger children to learn the purpose / meaning of the traditions.
The pictures are beautifully vibrant and colourful. Living in Sichuan, China Jingting Wang style is whimsical yet representational.

Natasha Yim was born in Kuala Lumpur and has lived in Singapore and Hong Kong before moving to California.
This is a great way to introduce children to the Lunar New Year and there are educational pages, activities, and a dumpling recipe in the back of the book for the whole family to enjoy.

I especially enjoyed how the author’s notes spent some time describing how Lunar New Year is celebrated in Korea, Vietnam and the Philippines.

I loved this little book, I learnt a lot from it about Chinese culture & their new year traditions. I love the sense of family & tradition, it's so homely & fun. This story is told in a fun & engaging way - great for kids! The pictures are really pretty too, I love the depth to them - there's so much to see.

It is a perfect book for early elementary students but also pertinent for adults.I learned a lot of new facts.I shared this book with my grandson who is 6 .Great teaching book.
