When a 13 year old Chinese boy is sent to St. Catherine’s to work in a laundry, he faces intense racism. In 1913, the Exclusion Act was still in effect. The work involves long hours of mind-numbing work. Hoi Wing sends money to his family in China and mourns his missed education. However he meets a young scullery maid who also likes to read. He also meets another young woman who helps him with his English. This is a moving coming of age novel which is also suitable for young adults.
